The Raquette River Killer

Rate this book
Ulrika Eleonora Barkley (Elle) had her life all planned out. Finish high school, go to college and sign up for a career in the military. Then one fatal situation changed her forever. To save her humanity, she left the military, returned to her hometown of Potsdam, New York, and opened her own private detective agency. But returning home has its dysfunctional challenges, as well. Her father, a Professor of History, well known in the community and loved by his students, worries she has settled for something less. Her mother, who drinks out of guilt, tells her daughter is just a peeping tom. Those thoughts push Elle to question herself. Will she be able to do the job? Will she get clients? These questions roll about her mind. Fortunately, her best friend from high school is right there to support her and cheer her on.

It is May 9, 2015. With her military career behind her, Elle enters her building at 117 Maple Street. A historic sandstone building, now her home and office. The day is heavy with traffic as Racquette Engineering University graduating seniors and their parents make their way to campus. And worse for Elle, tomorrow is Mother’s Day.

Elle’s plan is to settle in before opening her doors to clients. But unknown to Elle, her best friend has already placed an ad that a new detective agency is opening. So on her first day back, a woman walks through her door looking to hire a private investigator.

Elle was surprised about the ad, but excited to have a client. With concern, she takes the case, but the case turns very wrong in more ways than she can imagine. The more Elle investigates, the more she wonders, is her client’s husband, the Raquette River Killer. Before she can make headway on her first case, two more clients come through her door. A mother looking for her 15-year-old son missing for twenty-one years and the other looking for lost relatives. With an undercurrent of doubt to do the job, can Elle survive the small town ghosts and her military demons she fights hard to bury?

I heard about this book through my boss who is acquaintances with the author that is local to my area. It intrigued me so I thought I'd give it a shot. It was super fun reading about an area I am familiar with in a fictional story. It was easy to picture in my mind's eye for sure! Outside of desperately needing an editor, I thought the story was great with lots of potential for a series.

Great draft; I’d love to read the edited version of this book and additional adventures of this budding investigative duo in NNY.
Please keep writing; please also get a good editor to support you.
