I really enjoyed this book. The mining op was a great setting, and the source and mechanics interesting. I felt a few scenes ran a little long, but overall, the pace as they solved problems was tense. Going to buy the next book!

Facing death at every turn, the characters, buried below surface, draw on a wide range of skills to improvise to within Inches of their lives to survive. Bombarded from space they fight back. Survival their ultimate goal a true cliffhanger of a book. The beginning of a series.
Olsen, John M. Discovery. Kindle, 2022. Polecat Protocol 1. Discovery takes place on a far-future mining rig in the asteroid belt of a distant star, but it could just as well be set in the near future in our own star system. Its characters also seem closer to home than is credible. Although its characters are all adults, it reads like a young-adult novel of the Heinleinian era. Its story is an old-fashioned space adventure that sticks close to known science and engineering. 3.5 stars.
I wasn't sure what to think based on the title, but Olsen has delivered a thrilling story with high stakes danger that feels like a disaster flick like the Poseidon Adventure, or the Towering Inferno, mixed with the intrigue and sci fi mining aspects of Outland. Characters you want to see succeed and others you hope die in flames and agony are the hallmarks of well written stories, and this book has them in spades!
This is a book emphasizing the power of leadership and teamwork. A group of miners, abandoned and attacked come together to form a team that learns to overcome and survive. It’s reminiscent of older more traditional syfy. Very highly recommended.
Wow. A unique sci-fi story about a bunch of miners light years from home trying to survive after their supper station is destroyed. Interesting to see how they survive.
