A covert operative of Last Chance Rescue (LCR) Enterprises, Eden St. Claire has made secrets her life’s work. Seven years ago, an evening of emotional vulnerability and pure pleasure almost destroyed her. Now Eden wears her beauty like a mask, concealing any hint of vulnerability or the demons of her past.

But his search for her is overshadowed by a case that’s gone international. A powerful, ruthless, organized network is stealing women and children around the world. And a lover, a traitor, and a killer all wait for Eden’s next move.

Major conflicts were based on lies, inaccurate assumptions, and stupidity. This does not make an entertaining plot.

STORY BRIEF:
Devon lives with her evil mother and good stepfather Henry. Henry’s godson is Jordan who visits occasionally and knows the mother is evil. Devon goes to boarding school and hasn’t seen Jordan for several years. When she does see him (she is now 21) he doesn’t recognize her. She doesn’t tell him her name, and they have sex. The mother tells lies to Jordan which he believes. He then says mean things to Devon. She runs out the door in the middle of the night. A few minutes later she is taken by some bad guys, beaten and raped. The mother is called to the hospital but claims Devon is not her daughter. The mother doesn’t tell anyone where Devon is and tells police that Devon has disappeared. Noah (the head of a covert agency) sees her in the hospital and takes care of her. He takes her to France, arranges plastic surgery and training. She becomes one of his top agents. Devon’s stepfather and Jordan have no idea what happened to her. The police and Jordan have been searching for her in vain for seven years.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
I cannot enjoy a story where most conflicts are based on lies among people who love each other and care for each other. When I was in the middle of the book, I was thinking “why don’t I enjoy this?” I was hoping the last half would be better. It was not. There were more lies and inaccurate assumptions in the last half than in the first half. By the end of the book, I was angry. The hero and heroine were stupid to lie and to believe lies. Also they each did something stupid which was out of character. See Spoilers below.

However, I know there are many readers who are not bothered the way I am by lies between lovers as a source of conflict. It’s a pet peeve of mine, so I won’t like any book whose plot is based on that. If you’re ok with that plot, then stop reading my review. Read other reviews to decide if you might like it.

I love and agree with the following line from Mojca’s review. “For someone who apparently could hold his cool under any circumstances, Jordan was quite adept at channeling his inner prick and jumping to wrong conclusions at the throw of a dime.”

The main bad guys in this book are human traffickers. The agency’s actions and events to find and fight the bad guys were good. I would have liked more of that story and less of the lies between Jordan and Devon.

SUMMARY OF LIES (SEMI-SPOILER):
The mother lies. The stepfather lies through his silence. Devon lies to Jordan. Jordan believes another lie and says things that hurt Devon (which are lies). Seven years later when Devon sees Jordan, she lies to him again. Noah says something to Devon which he thought was true but it wasn’t. Therefore Devon is hurt, lies to Jordan, and runs away. After Noah learns he was mistaken, he does not clear things up with Devon. Samara lies to a nurse which Devon overhears. This hurts Devon and she runs away again, believing a falsehood.

I recall the Brandy Alexander series (by Shelly Fredman) in which the heroine lies frequently to most people including herself. Everyone knew she lied and they ignored her lies. It was funny. Her lies were a personality quirk, not the basis for conflict. The conflicts in the Brandy stories were based on events, personalities, and bad guys. In Rescue Me, the conflicts were based on people lying, which didn’t work for me.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Jordan was one of the best covert agents in the world. Devon was kidnapped. Jordan goes to the kidnapper’s location. He hears a woman scream. He follows the sound, enters a room and sees Devon tied up. Instead of looking around the room for the bad guy, Jordan drops his gun on the floor and runs over to see if Devon is ok. The bad guy picks up Jordan’s gun. Jordan knew Devon wasn’t alone because of the scream a minute earlier. Why drop the gun?

I want happy endings and justice. I was disappointed that there was no revenge or justice for the evil mother. I did not like sad things happening to the good stepfather. I also did not like the lack of details and justice for the two men who brutalized Devon at age 21.

DATA:

Author Christy Reece's debut novel kept me turning the pages when I ought to have been sleeping. I don't get a lot of time to read, so when I do I feel terribly disappointed if the book isn't enjoyable. I prefer a bit of grit with my romance, and this book delivers that quite well. It involves a topic that's near and dear to my heart — human trafficking.

For me to really love a book, I have to feel the characters’ emotions shining through. I also have to find the plot believable. I definitely found both the hero and heroine to be sympathetic and though secret ops stories depend to some degree on people suspending disbelief, I found myself wishing that there really was a Last Chance Rescues operation out there somewhere.

Romantic suspense novels that involve kick-butt heroine always make me nervous, because, to be honest, I can’t enjoy a heroine who lacks femininity or vulnerability. Female strength to me is different than male strength, and rather leave the violence to the guys. Gender role reversals don’t interest me much.

But Eden/Devon is not that kind of a kick-butt heroine. She’s still very much a woman, not a guy with breasts. At times extremely vulnerable, she tugged at my heart strings. Jordan, the hero, is all the things a hero should be: strong, brave, physically adept (in many ways), sexy, protective.

Reading about the tragedies of their lives and watching them find their way together while they take down a nest of vicious and evil human traffickers — a subject I dealt with in Hard Evidence — was pure romance reading pleasure.

This was my first book by Reece, but it won’t be my last.

I'm not in the mood to write a full review, so I'll just go straight to the point...

I enjoyed this read: Ms. Reece's writing was good, the premise and the setup for the series were engaging, Noah McCall was a very interesting secondary character - why do I always fall for the manipulative and seemingly coldhearted bastard? - and the villains had a twisted ethic code that saved them from being jut slimy, one-dimensional characters. So why "only" 4 stars? Well, that was basically Jordan's and Devon/Eden's fault: I liked them and felt sorry for them, but their eagerness to jump into conclusions every single time made me wonder how good they were at their jobs. I mean, given the fact that they pretty much lived to lie in their line of work, shouldn't they be better at not taking anything at face value? *shakes head in frustration*

Anyway, I'm sold to this series because the good stuff surpasses my annoyance with Jordan and Devon/Eden. I rarely read series back to back, but I've already picked up the next book to read. It's Noah's story, how could I have resisted? ;)

4.5 stars. What a great romantic suspense story. Loved the romance, the pacing, the writing style...etc. Steamy tension, hot sex scenes, two fantastic leads, great secondary characters -- overall, a refreshingly good romance. There were some weak points, and fans who like a strong suspense storyline may be dissapointed as it was on the predictable side. But since I am not big on the suspense part, it works for me. Will absolutely read more by this author.

At age 21 Devon mysteriously dissapeared without a trace, only to emerge months later as Eden. For reasons the book will reveal, Eden St. Claire has put her old life behind her - and you wont blame her one bit. At age 28, she is now a top agent with Last Chance Rescue (LCR) Enterprises, and has survived a great deal. She is strong and hardened at the core, but she has never fully lost her grip on humanity. Eden/Devon is a great character that is strong but has vulnerablities which she recognizes and keeps in check. When Jordan re-enters her life, she is challenged to keep her cool. He doesn't recognize her, but he is still looking for the missing 'Devon'. In her former life Eden was madly in love with Jordan, but he never saw anything but a young, sweet kid. He joins LCR in hopes of learning more about Devon's mysterious dissapearance. As they work cases together, a deep passionate relationship builds between them. It is hot, steamy, full of tension that just worked for me!!

My only nagging complaint is something that bothers me in darn near all romantic suspense stories - and that is 'the devil is in the details'. There are times when two plus two just doesn't equal four, which can be jarring. The author gets her details right in much of the book with the big exception of her medical knowledge and the set up of the uber secret organization Last Chance Rescues. (A doctor who says to get some sleep when you get a bad concussion?! And all the super speed healing that went on was off putting.)

The series is based on a highly secret organization that rescues people from peril danger, mostly kidnappings. The organization is not well outlined in the book, so I hope it becomes more solid in future books. My problem was how they so easily got clients from all over the world, both in private sectors and assisting governments/police agencies regularly -- but yet they are a super secret agency that no one knows about? From what I could tell, only the bad guys don't know who they are. It would have been more believable if their work cases were fed to them from a single source who helped keep the groups identity unknown. But nope.

Don't get me wrong, I really did love this book. My bones of contention were small potatoes in the overall enjoyment of this book. The author can write, build great chemistry between her hero/heroine, and keep you turning the pages to read more. This is a hard genre to write, and since this is the authors debut book I can only imagine the rest will only improve.

4.5 STARS

WOW!! This was a really good romantic suspense book. My first from Christy Reece. I had read some good reviews on this series, and decided to give it a go.
The suspense part of the story involves human trafficking, selling anyone from babies to teenage girls to young women. And there’s plenty of action when it comes to hunting down the bad guys.
Remember Me starts out during the teenage years of Devon Winters, 13 year old Devon has a wicked awful mother, I found myself wanting to shield this young girl from this atrocious woman Alise. Evidently she never wanted Devon, and never let this sweet girl forget it. She has a stepfather, Harry who has come to love Devon very much, as his own over the years. Much of this young girls happiness has come from Harry and his Godson Jordan Montgomery. Jordan has been contacted by a special government ops division to come work for them, not even out of college he accepts. Devon is shipped off to boarding school.
We jump ahead 8 years later, a now 21year old Devon who has always loved Jordan, and not as a brother. Jordan and Devon haven’t seen each other in 8 years, and she has changed a lot. She wants Jordan to see her as a woman, not the girl he remembers from years ago. They meet at a ball, and sparks fly, and they end up sleeping together. Jordan doesn’t know that it’s Devon he has just slept with. Well thanks to Alise, she unloads a bunch of lies about Devon on Jordan and all hell breaks loose. Jordan says some terrible, hurtful things to this young lady. I wanted to punch Jordan. Sure Devon was deceitful in not telling Jordan who she was, but sleeping with Jordan wasn’t her intent that night, and Jordan ripped this girls heart to shreds.
Minutes after leaving Jordan’s apartment that night, Devon is snatched up by 2 men, and brutalized in the worst ways imaginable. These events change Devon’s life forever. That is until Jordan enters her life again 7 years later. And again Jordan doesn’t know who she is……
This was a great read from beginning to end, love lost and found, deceit, survival and redemption!!
There is great character development of all the characters, and Devon/Eden is wonderful. And as much as I wanted to kick Jordan’s ass, I ended up loving him too!! I’m looking forward to the next book, it will take up where this one leaves off.

I've had this series on my shelf for over two years. Now that I've started it, I could kick myself for having waited so long!!

The set up
Following an ill-fated encounter with Jordan Montgomery and a subsequent vicious attack, Eden St. Claire has completely reinvented herself seven years later. She's now a skilled operative for Last Chance Rescue (LCR), a covert organization specializing in rescuing victims when all other avenues are exhausted. Eden is nothing like the woman from her past but when she finds herself assigned to a case working with Jordan, she's put to her toughest test. You see, Jordan doesn't recognize her and he's been trying to find her all these years.

The issues
Eden and Jordan are undercover to infiltrate and take down a family of human traffickers. She's falling for Jordan all over again but is reluctant to tell him who she really is. Her boss and mentor orchestrated this assignment to force her to face her past and move on. Now she's afraid of losing Jordan because of her deception.

What I loved about this story
Eden. She had a tough beginning, including a horrible event that almost ended her life, but managed to transform herself into one of the most formidable mercenary operatives for LCR. Eden is smart, beautiful and highly skilled, relying on her wits and physical toughness to outsmart her targets. Even when she starts falling for Jordan again, she doesn't miss a beat in keeping her priorities level. Their romance is exciting, despite being overshadowed by Eden's secrecy. The case is suspenseful, blended perfectly with the romantic aspects. I also loved that the series is based in Paris, adding an international flair that's refreshing.

What was a challenge
At the crux of the story were the many miscommunications between Eden and Jordan that sourced so many of their conflicts. There was just one too many occasions and it was annoying. And, his reactions almost threw him into anti-hero status but he redeemed himself (barely) by the end.

The bottom line
This was a fantastic series start with a host of enigmatic characters, exciting plots and tension-filled operations. I must admit I've already finished the next book and it was even better. If you like this genre, you'll love this story and series.

Yow. I'm not sure whether I'm thrilled or just exhausted after reading "Rescue Me" by Christy Reece. This story is romantic suspense with all the action and tortured lead characters anybody could ask for. It's also a story that's almost impossible to put down once started.

Eden is a woman who prefers to forget her painful past...except for the stamina and grit it gave her to be the woman she is today. Eden rescues the weak and helpless. She works for LCR, Last Chance Rescue; a shadowy private organization that people call as a last resort--when nothing else has worked. The organization's focus is on the victim rather than the perps and their sole aim is rescue. Of course, if a perp gets hurt, or killed in self-defense during the rescue...well, nobody's gonna cry. Eden is one of LCR's best operatives; trained by the boss himself after suffering from a mental and physical trauma beyond what most others could survive. She emerged from that ordeal a new woman, with a new face, a new body, and a new purpose.

Jordan is a man haunted by a missing girl, Devon. For seven years he's searched high and low, via legal and not-so-legal means to find her. Yet every lead goes no where and Jordan NEEDS to move on with his life. So he takes a chance by contacting LCR for the second time hoping to clear his conscience. When he accepts a 'job' working for LCR, he's stunned by his instant and visceral reaction to his new partner, Eden. Even as they become closer, he knows Eden is hiding something. What will Jordan do when the secrets come out?

Both hero and heroine are tortured, VERY much so, almost too much for me. But I guess that extreme was needed with the plot revolving around human trafficking and the risks both take to free the victims. It's also necessary to explain their complicated relationship, with its back and forth swaying for most of the novel. Christy Reece can write some smoking love scenes, and I could feel the tension and electricity between these two through the pages. There were times I wanted to smack BOTH hero and heroine for their actions or attitudes, but considering we're dealing with two Alpha types...what did I expect?

"Rescue Me" is a gripping tale of love lost and love found and justice. It's also a tale of mistakes and forgiveness and a reminder that words once spoken can never be forgotten. Fans of Johansen, Howard's recent works, and even Kay Hooper will enjoy this one.

**Spoilers**
This book left me feeling angry and disappointed. The whole time I was reading this book, I was reminded of a bad spin off to Alias.
For people who were supposed to be trained operatives, the characters acted like idiots. These characters were supposed to be good at reading emotions, something that would make them good at their jobs, but after reading the book I fail to see how they could read an emotion as noticeable as sadness or happiness. The characters truly were unbelievable. They did contradictory things throughout the book. For example, in one scene Eden was uncomfortable with Jordan, and in the next scene she wasn't. When Jordan and Eden went to their first assignment together, Eden couldn't bear to have his hands on her and then a few pages later she couldn't bear to keep her hands off him(the swimming pool scene). The characters acted more like children, rather than deadly undercover agents. Another thing, the whole time I read this novel I couldn't understand who Eden really was. She seemed like a facade to me. Sometimes she was strong, sometimes weak, sometimes frightened, sometimes fiery. So who was she. I still don't know. Oh, and Eden was very fragile to be one of the best LCR operatives. Just say something about her past and she will be shattered.

Many things were just introduced into the story without ever explaining what they were. This happened time and time again and I was very annoyed by the time the book ended. For example, take the first few pages- all these characters were just suddenly introduced without any actual introduction. I didn’t even know who was who. A few pages later, the backstory was given and the characters were introduced and then I caught on. I wouldn’t have minded if this had been the only time this had happened, but it kept happening again and again. Things were just introduced without any explanation as if the readers are just supposed to know. Another example is when the story forwarded to seven years later and we meet our heroine who is now apparently cold. Well I couldn’t really relate with the emotions the heroine was feeling because I had no idea why she was acting all cold all of a sudden. They just seemed like a bunch of words on the page that I couldn’t relate to. And the reason why she had become so cold hadn’t been revealed until much much later. This was very annoying.

The word choice was terrible at times. For example, I'm hungry was described as "the need for sustenance vied for supremacy." The first time I read this, I was just like what. And then I read it again and again and I just could not believe any author would actually say this. The way this author wrote made it seem superfluous.
The human trafficking thing was interesting, but the author could have made it so much more interesting. All the action in this book just happens all of a sudden. There is no building up to it or anything. And the bad guys just seemed stupid. They do not even deserve to be called villains because they were so stupid at being the bad guys.

Lastly, having misunderstandings between the major characters as a way to drive the plot is a terrible idea. Some people may like having lies preventing the characters from being together, but I dont. By the end it really was too much. I mean after all those stupid misunderstandings, another misunderstanding is thrown in the end where Eden thinks Samara is Jordan's fiancee and leaves him. By then, I was just like didnt we have enough stupidness to last a lifetime between these characters, do we really need more. Jordan truly was an idiot. And I wanted to punch Eden. She lied to Jordan once and slept with him and she thought that was a mistake, but she just did it again (this time as Eden). She deceived him twice. This whole misunderstanding thing was a major turnoff. By the end of the book, these two idiots could have died for all I cared.

Oh and one more thing, Noah seemed stupid as well. He might have seemed like Jonas Wyatt, but not to me. Jonas was truly amazing, while Noah just seemed like an imperfect shadow of Jonas. So I wont be reading the next book or any other books.

So basically there was no character development (the characters acted like children from the start to the end), the action wasn't even that interesting (the bad guys were defeated just like that, in the blink of an eye), the writing style was terrible too, the romance between the characters was poorly written as well. I wanted to stop reading this book 3 times. First when I was one-fourth into the book, next halfway into the book, and the last three-fourths way. I really should have just stopped, but I kept thinking it might get better, afterall I had read many amazing reviews. But no. Overall this book was terrible. I would have given it 2 stars had the plot actually been interesting, but even that was badly handled. So one star from me.

Devon has been in love with Jordan all her life, dreaming of marrying him since she was thirteen. Eight years later, her dream of love finally comes true, but a terrible lie almost destroys her life.

Seven years later, Devon exists no more. She’s resurfaced from the terrible tragedy of that long ago night a new woman, with a new face, new body, and a new name. But unfortunately, the past can never be buried for long and hers comes back with a vengeance when Jordan, needing closure, contacts her boss asking for help in finally finding out what happened to Devon.

This could’ve been a really good book. The theme of human-trafficking was intriguing—not something other books deal with or deal with at a quite smaller scale— and the main conflict between the two leads could’ve been astonishing. Unfortunately the said two leads ruined it for me.

For someone who apparently could hold his cool under any circumstances, Jordan was quite adept at channeling his inner prick and jumping to wrong conclusions at the throw of a dime. Okay, this might have added that extra touch of realism, but I just wanted to smash his face into a wall.
Eden a.k.a. Devon was a true pearl in the dysfunctional-heroine department. I know the trauma she’d experienced was horrendous and left a huge impact on her, but the therapists she’d seen after it should’ve been fired on the spot, if their idea of healing the deep emotional scars and using the horrific experience to turn her into a strong resilient woman was to turn the fragile, shy little girl into an emotionally-detached, rather schizophrenic woman. I just couldn’t stand her!
And the two of them together convinced me even less. Sorry, but I just didn’t feel the love, people. And their communication simply blew. Why is it that most conflicts in romance novels stem from the fact the h/h can’t (or won’t) communicate. A good long, cathartic talk could’ve speeded up the process and spared me some extensive eye-rolling.

Now, onto the good points of this story. The main theme, as I mentioned earlier. Chilling, suspenseful, gruesome at times, and extremely well executed. I wouldn’t have minded a little more info on the inner-workings of LCR, and maybe an extra action scene or two.
And the second, biggest good point—Noah McCall. I kept looking forward to his scenes, and though his rather Machiavellian machinations (why do hunks always like to play God with people around them?) reminded him a lot of Jonas Wyatt (director of the Bureau of Breed Affairs in the Breed series by Lora Leigh), I loved the guy (or maybe I loved him because of that). He was the perfect romance hero, attractive, harboring potentially dark secrets, good at what he did…And when he met his heroine (I peeked at the blurb for the next one, I admit it), I could literally see sparks flying. He more than compensated for the lack of sparkage between Jordan and Eden.

I'm not a big fan of romantic suspense but the blurb really sucked me in. The idea of this woman, hiding her identity and trying to survive after a brutal attack was so interesting. Please take my review with a grain of salt since this isn't a genre I usually enjoy.

The story of Devon/Eden was heartbreaking and her growth as a strong, capable woman was great to see. But as soon as Jordan shows up on the scene again, she begins to be a weak woman and I hated that. Jordan is a huge weakness for her, and I wanted her to be stronger. There was a lot of talk about hormonal reactions and attraction and it was too wishy-washy for me, in the middle of a suspense story where keeping focused is a matter of life and death. The bad guys were pretty bad and it was nice to see the agents of LCR right some wrongs in the world.

My main problem with the book was Jordan. He is such a knucklehead and he jumps to all the wrong conclusions over and over again. It's hard to believe he is such a good agent when he acts like this. After the way he treated Devon/Eden 7 years ago and the regrets he has, I'm amazed that he would just slip right back into that same man instantly. He treated her terribly and demonstrated that, once again, he doesn't even begin to know who she is or understand her heart or her soul.

Despite its weaknesses, this was a good story with strong characters and an interesting plot.

This is my first Christ Reece book and I'm definitely coming back for seconds.

Eden St. Claire has remade herself after a horrific night where she was humiliated by a man she loved, betrayed by her vile mother, and brutally attacked by strangers beyond recognition. Her transformation didn't occur overnight but took over the course of 7 years, thanks to Noah McCall who saw to it that she would recover. He not only gave her a new life but also gave her purpose as one of the operatives in his company, Last Chance Rescue (LCR), that find and rescue kidnapped individuals and return them to their families.

Jordan Montgomery has spent those years working for an unnamed government agency but has since grown tired of their scruples. He has also spent some of that time looking for a young woman known as Devon Winters who disappeared the night he slept with her and whom he was verbally cruel towards once learning who she was. As a last resort, Jordan has reached out to Noah and LCR to find Devon so that he can move on with his life and perhaps settle down with his girlfriend, Samara.

Eden wished to never see the man who broke her emotionally and when he approached her thinking she was Devon, her world is rock off its kilter. She must maintain her coolness and composure as she's on a mission to gain access to a family whom her agency believes to be involved in human trafficking. Now her and Jordan are pushed to work together and she needs to decide whether or not to tell Jordan who she truly is or create a lie that would destroy them both.

Eden is a heroine who have experienced the worst and came out of it fighting. The description of what happened to her was quite horrific. She's strong, yet also vulnerable. (She reminds me a bit of Eve Dallas from In Death series in the sense that she suffered a great deal but worked to rebuild herself and to stand up for the vulnerable in her job). Noah might have saved her life, but it will be Jordan who will save her heart and soul. There were some parts where I wanted to shake both Eden and Jordan since they were both causing each other heartache, but they responded in ways that was true to their nature. Eden feels that she must protect herself at all cost and Jordan still carries the shame and guilt all those years ago. I was a bit leery going in considering Jordan had a girlfriend, but to clarify, there was no cheating in this book thank goodness. I felt that the book had good pacing, with well balanced mix of romance and suspense. Parts of the suspense was on the predictable side but it didn't negate the way the story was told. It also introduces the next couple, Samara and Noah, and I can't wait to get the backstory for Noah.

I enjoyed reading this book. It's not as light-hearted as what I've been reading the past week, but it's a pretty good angst/love story.

The last few chapters are absurd, however, for the TSTL, knee-jerk actions of the protagonists, and that was annoying. It seemed like neither had learned a thing in all the drama of their lives. Rather immature behavior, as well as extremely hurtful. And could have been solved by a couple of questions and even moderately cool heads.

Still, I was rooting for the couple and the action was good. The set up for a series was effective and I've already started the next installment.

So, I recommend it, but don't look for anything new. In fact, the whole misunderstanding/rash response is one of the oldest tricks in the romance category so be prepared. Good chemistry between the main characters saves the book, and makes me recommend it.

This is my first time reading a Christy Reece book and I honestly don’t know why it took me such a long to read her. I’ve heard a lot of great things about her books and when I felt like I needed a good Romantic Suspense series to sink my teeth into, the Last Chance Rescue series saved me.

Firstly, I am a huge fan of the way Reece writes. She isn’t afraid to take on alternative point of views so that we as the reader can experience all different kind sides to the story. The opening scenes really grabbed my attention and that was manly because it was so different. We first see the main characters when they were younger and how they grew up. From their relationship makes a jump to when they are in adulthood and we can see a fast development in their romance. I really liked the way Reece made those jumps because it spices things up a little. But the most important thing is, she also shows how those things came to be later throughout the rest of the book.

I think this is a really solid start for the series so I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. It’s been a VERY long time since I’ve felt this strongly for a hero. Jordan had the natural heroics of a Romantic Suspense hero but there was also something very sweet about him as well. You could really tell that he loved Eden even from the first page.

I’m so excited to have discovered this series and am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. Fans of Pamela Clare’s I-Team and Cindy Gerard’s BOI series would love this one.

4 – 4.5 stars

Like most people here, I’m always on the lookout for good books. Romantic Suspense seems to be one of the genres where my TBR list grows slowly – and the one most likely to be hit or miss for me. I have no idea how Rescue Me even came to be on my TBR, but I am so grateful that it was, because this one was most definitely a hit.

Rescue Me really delivers, finding that elusive balance of just the right amounts of romance and suspense, with both being satisfying to the reader. This is harder to achieve than it sounds – usually you will find books with a strong romance are weak on the suspense plot, and vice versa. Happily, not so with this one.

The plot has the potential to sound convoluted, however the author really manages to pull it off well. An operative with a no-name agency, Jordan Montgomery has been looking for Devon Winters for seven long years – ever since their one night together went to hell in a handbasket. His last hope in finding her is to enlist the help of Last Chance Rescue Enterprises.

It is no accident that the mysterious head of LCR, Noah McCall, assigns Eden St. Claire to Jordan’s case, then sits back and waits for the cards to fall. Never one to miss an opportunity, Noah also enlists Jordan’s help to take down a child trafficking ring. Eden soon finds herself partnered with Jordan, in more ways than one, as she struggles with the trauma of her past and Jordan’s sudden reappearance in her present.

I think the author did a wonderful job in portraying how that one night so dramatically affected the lives of the main characters, and continues to haunt them seven years later. If that wasn’t enough, we are then left to discover that the trauma suffered by Devon got so much worse after Jordan closed the door.

There is a really interesting (non-clinical) psychological focus as we witness Eden’s internal conflict in facing the man that she simultaneously loves and hates and struggling to decide how best to resolve his search for Devon so they can both finally move on. All this while working to bring down the dangerous international human trafficking syndicate.

This was soooo close to a 5-star read, but both main characters had an unlikely and infuriating tendency to jump to major conclusions where the other was concerned, thus creating Conflict and Big Misunderstandings. This is a plot device I can (and do) forgive within reason, but here it happened once too often and in a major way.

Other than that relatively small complaint, Rescue Me was a very well-written page-turner that left me wanting more from this author. There is absolutely no doubt that I will be continuing with this series, especially when the next book features one very sexy and intriguing Noah McCall.

Rescue Me
3 Stars

Following a devastating assault, Eden St. Claire has remade herself into a strong, independent and kickass covert operative for Last Chance Rescue, an organization that specializes in locating missing people. Eden believes that nothing with ever shake her confidence again that is until she comes face to face with Jordan Montgomery, the only man who has ever gotten under her skin. As the two work together to stop a vicious ring of human traffickers, Eden will have to decide whether to embrace the future or succumb to the ghosts of her past …

Unfortunately, the action packed suspense plot cannot compensate for the problematic romance. The hero and heroine are constantly keeping secrets and lying to one another, which make neither one very likable.

The book starts out with Devon aka Eden manipulating Jordan into believing that she is someone else and the relationship goes downhill from there. You would think that she had learned her lesson about lying, but no… she repeats the same mistake when they meet again years later. Not only is the keeping secrets trope one that I cannot abide, but Eden’s lies make it virtually impossible to either sympathize or identify with her. This is a pity as her strong will and the manner in which she deals with the trauma she suffered have the potential for making her a wonderful heroine.

Jordan isn’t much better. He is a complete jerk almost from the start and a real contender for the Anti-Hottie Harem. He does manage to redeem himself somewhat as the book progresses, but he also has to be one of the most inept secret agents out there. Not only does he fail to recognize a girl he has virtually watched grow up as well as a women he has been intimate with, but he makes a fatal error in judgment that almost costs him everything. Neither James Bond nor Jason Bourne need be concerned about their jobs…

Thankfully, the premise of the LCR agency is sufficiently compelling and the human traffickers are sick and twisted enough to keep the pages turning. The secondary cast is fleshed out well and Noah is particularly intriguing so I will be continuing with the next book in the series.

Wow! This one "had me at hello" if you know what I mean. It was fast paced, featured amazing characters, contained edge of your seat suspense, and the romance was awesome as well. I am very picky about romantic suspense because so few do it well. Pamela Clare and Cindy Gerard are my favorites, but I think I can safely add Christy Reese into that elite group!

One of the best parts of this book was that the leads in this story have a past. They knew each other as they were growing up. Devon has loved Jordan her whole life and pledged to marry him one day when she was only 13 years old. Jordan is drawn to Devin throughout his life, despite her different ages, looks, and identities, he wants her.

I knocked off one star off of my rating because this book has one of the longest and most drawn out "big misunderstandings" that I've ever read. If this book wasn't so brilliantly written, I may have given up on it, but it was so awesome that I forgave the dreaded "misunderstanding " plot.

I won't give too much away, but this book contains some tough subjects. Brutality against women and children and human trafficking being a few of the major plots of the book. I appreciated the honesty and candidness of this subject and that Reese pulls no punches when discussing this horrible reality.

This is a 3 book series and I already have Noah's book all ready to go. Rescue Me is an awesome start to this series, and although it did evoke some "eye rolling" over the many lies, betrayals, and misunderstandings. The HEA made up it. I recommend this one highly!

I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did. I just found the relationship between Jordan and Eden to be so volatile, full of lies and doubt, and it didn't strike me as even slightly romantic until the very end. It was hard to read for me, maybe because Eden was soooo damaged. I like where the book ended up, and I like the two characters introduced for the next book. I will definitely continue with the series and hope that their relationship is a little more appealing than this one.

Excellent! A fantastic series. A new author for me and a great find. Equal parts of really good suspense and a steamy romance. The story is a fast paced page turner and difficult to put down. Both likeable and strong male and female leads (and thank gawd no whiney heroines). The kidnapping/rescue storyline is a nice change from the usual plot. These books are intelligent, sharp and very worthwhile reading. Christy Reece can’t wait for your next books.

I'd heard this series/author mentioned here and there and thought the series sounded interesting, but given that I had so many books to read and not as much time to read as I used to, I figured I'd pass on it. But then I found 2 of the books used and snagged the other 4 available at Borders's going-out-of-business sale. And since I was in the mood for some series-oriented romantic suspense, I thought I'd give this series a go. I'm glad I did. This is the kind of romantic suspense I enjoy, unlike Kylie Brandt's completely procedurally focused “Mindhunters” series and Cherry Adair's recent book “Riptide” that I read that was too romance focused.

Series Note:
First book in Christry Reece's “Last Chance Rescue” series about an independent organization that rescues people – often children – who have been kidnapped or are otherwise being victimized.

Summary:
Eden St Claire was born Devon Winters with a cold, abusive mother who made her life hell. The only bright spot her life was Jordan Montogomery, her loving stepfather's godson. Devon loved older Jordan with a teenager's idealistic nature. When she was older, Devon set her sights on Jordan, but one night of bad decisions leads to repercussions Devon could never have imagined. When it was over, Devon is reborn as Eden St Claire and later becomes and agent for Last Chance Rescue, an independent agency that works outside the law to rescue those in need of help.

Since that awful night, Jordan has never stopped looking for Devon after she disappeared. Years pass, but he still remembers the sweet girl he once knew and wants to know what happened to her. A trip to France on business leads Jordan back to LCR, where he decides to make one last ditch effort to find Devon. LCR boss Noah McCall recruits Jordan to help with a mission, pairing him with Eden – and knowing he's taking a big chance with Eden's state of mind.

At first, Eden is horrified to find Jordan back in her life, but once that passes, she discovers he's still the man she loves. And Jordan is just as infatuated by Eden. She's nothing like the woman he imagined he'd fall in love with, but to him, she's perfect. Then Eden's carefully built house of cards comes tumbling down, leaving everyone feeling betrayed and angry. Eden and Jordan will have a lot to get past to find their way back to each other.

Review:
Since romantic suspense is my favorite romance sub-genre I can be a little picky in what I like and what I don't like. There's got to be enough romance to make it feel like a romance, but not so much romance that I feel like I'm barely reading a romantic suspense. This book is pretty close to a happy medium, maybe with a slight leaning toward the more romance side of things.

I thought the premise of this series was interesting: a group that works outside the law to rescues victims in need of help. It's a great – even if popular – focus for a series. Leaves a lot of options to go with plot-wise.

Then you've got the character of Devon/Eden. Poor girl. You're heart breaks for what she goes through in the first part of this book. It builds a strong sympathy toward her. She makes more than a few mistakes, but it's hard to hold it against her when everything in her life arises from the terrible situations she's been in. You have to admire what she built herself into, becoming a top agent for LCR, hell-bent on saving people in need of help.

And there's Jordan...after what he did early in the book, you could easily dislike him, but he found himself in a bad situation and he reacted stupidly. Unfortunately, his actions had terrible consequences...which he doesn't find out about until years later. His dedication to finding Devon (Eden) makes up for his mistakes. And he's a good guy at heart.

These two together have great chemistry. Steamy, sexy, combative. They clash and click on every level. It was fascinating to read their interactions. But it's not a sweet romance. It's rather angsty, at times heartbreaking, and loaded with so much tension. There's never a comfortable moment between these two.

The only real quibble I have with the romance aspect is that the major conflict between Eden and Jordan was entirely too predictable. Everything is centered around Eden's secret that she is really Devon. I'm not overly fond of secret identity romances to begin with, but I was okay with it mostly in this book since all the dynamic were so interesting. When it comes to the hidden identity storyline though, they always lead to the same end point, with one of the characters finding out who the other really is and chaos ensuing. That's exactly what happened here. It was utterly predictable. I didn't hate it, but you just kind of have to shrug and wish that maybe there'd been a different way to work it out.

Suspense wise the book deals with missions for LCR. Eden helps rescue a girl whose been kidnapped by the pedophile son of a criminal family. Things build momentum when LCR realizes the family is involved in human trafficking and they work to break up the ring and deal with the vengeance of the family. There are definitely some disturbing elements to the suspense plot of the story. It deals with kidnapping and (sexual) abuse of minors and LCR trying to stop it. But if you aren't comfortable with such storylines, I'd advise against reading this book/series.

It's hard to say the suspense element is good, given the subject matter, but Reece wrote it well. The plot is tense, edgy and keeps you maybe not quite on the edge of your seat, but pretty engrossed in what is going on. Reece blended the suspense and romance elements of the story well together. Everything fit nicely and made sense.

I'm looking forward to moving on and reading the next book in the series, which will feature engimatic Noah McCall, head of LCR, and Samara Lyons, Jordan's ex-fiance.

Overall, Rescue Me: A Novel was an enjoyable read with a plot that moves quickly. I found the characters interesting. Eden/Devon had to overcome an incredibly traumatic past to become a highly efficient, skilled, competent agent at an agency that rescues kidnap victims. After deliberately feature altering plastic surgeries for the injuries she suffered, Devon had assumed the entirely new identity of Eden. That sounds pretty hokey but the author did a good job of making this plot device believable. Jordan's own issues were less clear other than his massive guilt over the role he played in Eden's past trauma when he knew her as Devon. Despite secrets, lies and poor communication (and guilt on both sides), Eden and Jordan fall in love and try to find a future together.

Considering the type of work the characters do at Last Chance Rescue, I didn't find the action scenes especially suspenseful. All the agents in the company seemed to be on James Bond level and even world wide syndicate criminals were rather easily overcome. But since I don't like a whole lot of tension in my reading, that was ok with me. :-)

Rescue Me: A Novel is is first in a series of books about agents at Last Chance Rescue. The next book Return to Me, features Eden's tortured and intriguing boss, Noah. I've added it to my TBR list and look forward to his story.

Since I'm a big fans of Karen Rose and Pamela Clarke, I start to searching for those kind of books, asking for recomendation from my fellow readers, and one of them mention Christy Reece. Quick peek at GR reviews convince me to start to hunt her books. Luckily, I got 2 books from her Last Chance Rescue series, the first and the second, since only these 2 that have been translated to Indonesian. Read this baby the second it came from delivery, and finished by the day after.

And I shamely admitted that I had underrated books published by Elex Media Komputindo. This one going to be my preciousss (*in Golum's voice). I reallly-really-really looove this book.

I love the story, the heroine, how she transform from a helpless victim to a really kick-ass woman. The hero, well, cant said I'm happy by the way he treat Eden/Devon, or how he said things, horrible things to her, call her slut and whore, at two different occasions. Wash your mouth, Jordan, that is not how you treat a woman you just have sex with. But even when I read that part, I thought, Oohhh, you're sooo gonna pay for that. And at the end, he did pays, alot.

One thing I really dissapoint, not to the book, but to the publisher. Dear EMK, please kindly translate and published the entire books from Last Chance Rescue, pretty pleaseee...

Well, at least I still have one more book to go.

First off let me just say that I loved this book. For me, it was one of those few were when I'm not reading it I'm thinking about the characters, whishing that I didn't have to do whatever it was that was keeping me from reading it.lol Jorden is a complete alpha-male, though I wouldn't say quite like Anne Stuarts anti-hero's. He's strong, confident, fighting to put the baddies away, ohh yeah, and sexy as hell.LOL Unfortunatly he's human and thus makes a few mistakes, but he's man enough to admit it and goes to any length to fix them.
Eden is a heroine that I can respect. Life has kicked her when she was down, big time, and yet she pulls herself toghether (with lots of help form another yummie alpha-male..his books next in line...yeah!)and comes back fighting, also putting the baddies away and saving the innocent. If only she could forget her past.
When these two come together, they make a great team. Not just working for this secret gov. agentcy, but together as a couple. Let me add here that Christy Reece writes some VERY GOOD love scenes. =) There are some issues that they have to work out and I love that Christy Reece didn't have them worked out in just the last two pages. Now I have to go and order the rest of the series. LOL

It was a wonderful intense dark read, the suspense plot and action along with romance everything was in right balance, loved this book

Devon is one woman who has a spine of a steel, she is a determined strong courageous brave woman, she suffered so much and she was shattered totally but she stood again and became a more stronger person gave her life to save other people's life and bring justice to people who were wronged, but when it came to Jordan she was weak,i wanted Devon to make Jordan work harder for her forgiveness

Jordan he is good man but the dumbest jerk, first time Devon's lies and Alise call added more fule to his anger and he jumped to conclusion,he knew what a B***** Alise is but in anger he trusted her words and acted so cruelly towards Devon not giving her the chance to explain but second time way he again jumped to conclusion and this time also he was as cruel as he was the first time,it was hard for me to forgive him

Noah absolutely adored him he was a friend supporter teacher and a brother to Devon, without his help Devon would have never made it i am eager to read his story and wanna know his dark past and how he started LCR

Overall a wonderful good read
Recommend it

Gosh... Hidup Devon tragis bener... Masih gak rela ayah tirinya udh gk ada, masih berharap supaya mereka bisa bertemu lagi, karena waktu terakhir bertemu, momennya nyesek bgt 😭
Jordan, our main male character, is an ass. Kalo emosi bisa lepas kendali gitu, ngeri cuy omongannya. Mana si Devon mudah bgt memaafkannya hadeh. Habis ini gak sabar bc bukunya Noah 😆 aku sebenarnya masih penasaran gimana kabar emaknya Devon. Kesel soalnya.
