Although this is probably the best written of the "Maclean Curse" series, I just could not bring myself to enjoy a story in which an almost 40 year old man maliciously sets out to destroy a 23 year old, innocent (although impulsive) girl's life and her reputation, then humiliate her in front of all society.

Ok... for the first time in this serie about Scottish men, appears a plaid and a kilt, despite they appear in all the covers... that's strange... because it only appears as a costume in a mascarade, and as a costumeof an ancestor, and I think it was usual for the Lords in Scotland to wear it, in this period...

The book has funny and the romance between the two main characters engaging. It's a light reading but, in my opinion, better than the three first books.

In the epilogue, 5 years have passed, it was good to know what happened to all the brothers and families, especially in relation to the children, mainly because of the age of some of the characters. The author references some things but just because of the curse.

Things I thought were strange about this serie:
- the ages of the heroines, when the average time of life in this period it was 34-40 years it's strange the heroines age isn't a problem important enough to be referred in the story
-in the 1st book it seems the brothers go to London for the 1st time, despite the age, in the next books they are accomplish Londonners Scottish Lords as if they always lived in London
- the lack of Scottish presence, in language, clothing... except for the Mam quotes.
- the MacLean men never talk about there ancestors, namely the father, supposedly the previous Laird
- in the 3rd book, the one about Hugh and Catriona, the ages of the girls
- In the epilogue, Mam's advice Catriona to don't give up about having children, 5 years after she shouldn't lose hope. Mam's right but maybe it was logical to refer that Caitlyn also waited 5 years to get pregnant, right?!

Never mind, it's just me being picky!

My favourite of the series.

Alexander MacLean(39) is looking for revenge on Caitlin Hurst(23) after her planned trap for him, ending up in his brother Hugh being forced to marry her sister Triona. He asks his exmistress to invite Cait to her house party in order to ruin her in society. Cait soon finds out what he is up to and they make a wager, they each have to complete 3 tasks. If Alexander wins he gets Cait as his mistress for 2 weeks ,if he loses Cait gets a proposal in view of everyone(so she can publicly refuse him). Let the games, passion and love begin.

I found parts of this book hilarious especially the part with Alexander and the Bee's. I know a lot of reviewers took offense in the age difference and the way he treated Cait. I think Alexanders behavior towards Cait was because of his fight against his Attraction for her , it was so unwanted, that all rational reason flew out the window even at his age. Overall a good witty fluffy series.

I'm going to say this is 4.75 Stars, the only thing keeping it from the full five is that the ending, the wrap-up, the HEA seemed a little rushed, especially considering the sheer tension of the relationship between Alexander and Caitlyn. Also, while the kissing and the teasing was delicious, once it came time for the boogie-woogie, the consummation of their flirtation if you will, I could've used some more steam, some more details or something. But wow, I really enjoyed this book. I flew through it today, just loved it. Caitlyn was a likable heroine, and Alexander? All I can say is yum, I think I've found a new favorite for the moment. Man, he was great. But what really made it so enjoyable was their dynamic together, their irresistible attraction to one another, their undeniable need to clash and come together. I could feel that tension, and when they did have some stolen moments alone, and their fiery kisses and the way neither one of them could really think straight when the other was around... I just loved it! It was delicious, but I think I've said that already. I enjoyed Alex's teasing, his need to goad Caitlyn into acting rashly. Who could resist? She made it so easy for him to get a reaction from her, even when 'proving herself' to him involved reckless danger, like the runaway horse incident. Georgiana I didn't like so much. But of course, as she was the 'villain' here. She could've been an interesting person, but her attitude and her meanness quickly overrode any potential she could have had to be a good, well-rounded person. You'd think she'd act a little more grateful for her position in life, considering her Duke husband rose her up from her station as a whore's bastard, a poor peasant mill-worker. But no, instead of it making her grateful, I think it made her meaner, made her think she was all special now, and could just take whatever she wanted. I would've liked to see Alexander give her what-for instead of just politely ignoring her multitude of snarky comments and her downright cruelty in the things she'd say to Caitlyn. Would've been nice to see him set her in her place, tell her to bugger off, tell her flat-out to her face that she was nothing but a past diversion to him and that she meant nothing, and would always be nothing to him. That would have been fun to see, her trying to splutter up some kind of retort or something... I was glad the other guests were more friendly, especially Miss Ogilvie, who became a friend to Cait, and the Marquis and his wife. I especially liked how all the maids and the housekeeper were quick to become Cait's allies, especially considering they weren't even her servants. There were a few lol moments, and I especially liked Muiren, the maid, I was kinda hoping she'd go with Cait, get hired on by her after her marriage to MacLean at the end. But the tasks, the challenge based on the old legend, that was the best, a good source of amusement. I liked how instead of just the usual challenge of a hero trying to win a girl to his bed, she set it up that they had to accomplish certain tasks, challenge each other to be inventive and come up with the ways to complete their tasks. The stealing of the Duke's snuffbox especially, and the climbing the tree and the resulting bruises, the capture of the dog, and meeting Lord Dingwall, and Alexander showing up to the masque in full kilt and fur boots... mmm... and I don't usually go for the kilt idea but this time... mmm... Did I mention I really, really like Alex? The desire between these two was palpable, I coulda scooped it up with a spoon, and it was great as the age difference is really one of my personal most favorite set-ups ever, one I can totally relate to and enjoy full-out, imagine it perfectly in my head. I got all warm and tingly a few times reading this story. It was also good to see Mam, Cait's grandma, again, I 'met' her in Hugh and Caitriona's book, and she's quite an interesting character, I'm wondering if I'll get to see more of her in the Hurst Amulet series. Heck, I still need to get #2 and #3 in this MacLean series, as well as the one that comes after this one. But I'm finding out I really enjoy this author's writing, and can't wait to find more, especially to finish this series. But, back to the story, yea, it was all great, even when they finally came together, there on the settee in her room after he'd fought off another man who was interested in her... it was sweet, but sexy too. I liked seeing him come to the slow conclusion that hey, maybe he does care for her, maybe he does like her as a person and not just as a challenging opponent in some flirtatious sparring. He never got quite as vicious as he threatened, and I was glad, I didn't want him to be too mean. But the end, after she left Georgiana's house and went back home, and he finally came for her... it was sweet, and a little romantic, but I wanted more somehow, maybe more of a full-blown confession of his love and passion, or something, or even a more drawn out reunion, but I still liked it, especially when he finally confessed why he was afraid to love her, that he was worried he'd get even older and she'd still be young and beautiful, and that she'd leave him for a younger man. That's a basic fear in a relationship of that sort, but real love can overcome that, in my opinion, and it was great that in this story it did. I love that. So, in conclusion, I really liked this story a whole lot, it resonated very well with me, and I'm going to think fondly of it for awhile, and I'll be thinking fondly of Alexander too... (note: the Alexander in my mind looks similar to Hugh Jackman) :D

The age difference wasn't as much of a sticking point as the general immaturity. A grown-ass man seeking revenge by ruining a young woman is beyond petty, and I just couldn't get into the story.

3.5 stars. Caitlyn and Alexander. Heroine is 23 Alexander is almost 40. In the previous book her sister married his brother Hugh who is almost 40 also but not much was made about over the 20 year difference in age. In this one it was a major concern of the hero. For an almost 40 year old man I sort of found Alexander to be really immature. Caitlyn is immature too. She does some tstl things. Examples: Accepts a spirited horse she can not control decides to take a short cut through a field that is too dangerous for her since there are fences she would have to jump, holes she would have to avoid, and rocks. She also has sex with Alexander even though he is saying he will not marry her. I also thought Alexander's ex lover was stupid. I can not imagine a woman would really believing that a guy wants another younger, beautiful woman invited to a weeks long party just for revenge. Especially, if the revenge was to "ruin" the beautiful woman. I did enjoy this one slightly more than her twins story because most of the story issues are solved in this story--not all though. The epilogue 5 years later was nice. I was bummed to her that her twin was not able to have children so far, but one line did say that Hugh adopted the children (I assume legally) which was one of the questions I had about that book.

An entertaining historical romance with lots of enjoyable antics but the romance was unbelievable and I didn't care for the hero with his stubborn negative beliefs about the relationship. The heroine seemed rather naive or maybe foolish. Caitlyn is excited about going to a house party not knowing that laird Alexander will be there seeking revenge.

Alex mengatur siasat agar Caitlyn diundang ke rumah pedesaan Dutchess bekas kekasih gelap Alex. Tenyata kehadiran Caitlyn malah menarik perhatian gentleman yang lain. Hm. Alex mulai panas.

Endingnya pun cukup bikin surprise.... ^.*

So happy reading....

I usually enjoy Karen Hawkins stories but this one was just too hard to get into with such a childish, malicious, awful "hero". Hard to believe a 40 year old Laird was embarrassed by a 23 year old innocent woman and decided to get his revenge by inviting her to a house party, humiliating her and thereby ruining her reputation. Childish much?

Said "hero" is an absolute ass throughout the entire book - granted he believes he has cause - but still his behavior and attitude became tedious very quickly.

This is the worst book in the series.

After reading about Caitlyn in the last book I wasn’t a huge fan. She seemed selfish and spoiled and not a character I would like. But she proved me wrong in her own book.

Caitlyn is gorgeous and everyone knows it. During the London season she flirts with Alexander and they both catch feelings but he is stubborn and says stupid things and then Caitlyn does stupid things.

In the end Alexander thinks he will get revenge by inviting her to a house party thrown by a former mistress and ruining Caitlyn. But instead they engage in a ridiculous bet. The winner gets a scandalous prize!

First, I would like to say that MacLean Curse was
one of the first historical romance series I picked
up when I first started reading the genre. Therefore,
this series holds a very special place in my heart,
Karen Hawkins in general. However, I must admit
some of the books were quite boring and a bit repetitive
if you read them in one go. So pace yourself!

There were several reasons that I highly disliked this
book.

1. The plot was a bit much, a 40 year old man who is
angry at a 22 year old woman seemed very farfetched.
What 40 year old decides to get back at a young woman
for something so petty? Shouldn't you be managing your
fortune or running your estates?

2. The whole mistress thing was too much for me. So
basically, the whole book takes place at a house party,
the H conspires with his mistress to throw a
party so they can invite the h and humiliate her in front
of everyone; therefore, ruining her in front of society.

Disclaimer: I don't think he sleeps with the mistress
while he is together with the h. So no cheating.

4. I hated how much power the author gave to the
mistress in the story. She was very prominent throughout
the tale, at some point it felt like a threesome.
(This was a personal preference though, some of my
friends thought I was crazy for thinking this.)

5. The hero was basically an overgrown frat boy. There
was zero substance to him, he was whinny, childish,
self-centered and not very manly (don't let the cover
fool you). If manly means being an asshole 24/7 and if you
like that, then he is your man.

6. The hero was quite cruel to the h throughout
the story. It was expected based on the plot but
at some point I felt he took it too far. Especially, when
he was using the mistress in a way that would hurt
the h greatly in front of others. At some point, he
knew that the h was into him and possibly in love
with him, and yet he flaunts that bitch in front of her.
(this happens toward the end of the book)

FYI, if you have not read the rest of the series DO NOT,
I repeat DO NOT pick up this book, in my opinion. The
references to other books will keep smacking you in the
head throughout the story. You will either love it, hate it,
or feel a need to run to a store and pick up the other books
in the series. If you really don't feel like reading the whole
series, then at least pick up the previous book because
the whole revenge plot is offset by the previous story.
For me it was good that they summarized the previous books
(somewhat at least) because I didn't really remember
what happened. Which leads me to the last reason why
I really didn't like the book.

7. I waited too long to pick up this book after reading
the previous books. Let me paint a picture for you, I
was a teenager when I read this books and I am 27 now.
You catch my drift (wayyyy toooo long). By the time I
picked up this story I was over this whole series. Or I should
have re-read the previous books to remind me what was
happening and why I liked the series to begin with.
I was very disconnected from the characters and half
of the time I didn't care for what happened to either
one. In the beginning, I cared for the h but after
putting up with so much from our so called H I lost
respect for her.

Had I read this story back in my teenage years when
I first started the other books, I would have eaten the
book up. Sadly, that is not the case anymore.

Ah, I feel blue..I absolutely enjoyed this series quite a lot and I'm sad to see it end. In this last one, the oldest McLean brother Alexander faces a challenge called Caithlyn Hurst.

From the previous book we know that these two already met and enjoyed a flirtation that ended up in dislike for one another. Or so they think, because we know where this bickering usually leads to. And yes, my favourite love theme catches up with these two as well.

I loved the interactions between Alexander and Caithlyn. They were both stubborn and they loved a silly challenge which was the theme in the book. This may sound so, but it was quite fun to read the way they both struggled to complete their tasks and the bickering that went inbetween.

I was a bit afraid if I could like Caithlyn fully cause she was described as much less responsable than her twin sister Triona. But Caithlyn proved to be a good and strong heroine and I was warmed up to her instantly. Alexander was the same. He was brooding and stubborn but when he wanted to be charming, boy was he charming..

So I'm sad this series is over. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed reading about every single sibling and their partners.

Ah! What a end to the series!!!
I absolutely tumbled into love with Alexander, although in the first book, I doubted my ability to do so. He is perfectly matched with Caitlyn. This is the second book of the series that has successfully made me feel so many things all at once. I was laughing, upset, mad and foolishly smiling all throughout the book!
ANd the author added a EPILOGUE! I mean I kept wondering from the first book, why doesn't she add an epilogue to her books. It just rounds off the ending so well. I guess, she was saving it for the end!
Did I mention, I loved it??

I initially read the Hurst series and picked up the last two of this one to read of about the Hurst twins, Catriona and Caitlyn.

I really really did not like this one. Neither Alex nor Caitlyn were likable. Both of them egotistical and self-centered. It is only foiled but far more mean-spirited characters. Even the means of which Alex employs to set up Caitlyn is stupid and unredeemable in my book. It really set a bad tenor that I just couldn't get passed my distaste of the spirit of it. Otherwise, it could have been a fun read if it didn't border on a Dangerous Liaison storyline.

I'm sorry but I just couldn't get past the age difference. It was a dealbreaker for me. The fact that the "hero" was out for petty revenge on a girl almost half his age made it even worse. Revenge storylines were never really my thing, but I'm sure I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if it hadn't been for the borderline creepy age gap. I kept thinking:"Ew,ew,ewww!" It's a shame that the series had to end in disappointment :/

I struggled a lot with this novel. I didn't feel that the main characters had that much of a connection to each other. I didn't like either of them all that well and found the first part of the story rather boring. It just didn't connect with me on the level I'd hoped it would.

sukaaaaaa... kayaknya buku sebelumnya tu gw baca terjemahan deh, biasanya mood gw dan bintang gw dipengaruhi oleh bahasa yg enak dibaca LOL.

Sebenernya gw lupa dong cerita sebelumnya tu, Alex - Caitlyn flirting nya kayak apa, apa kaga dibahas detail kali ya di buku 4, soale gw rada kaget pas Caitlyn kissu2 sama Alex katanya sebelumnya mereka sering banget kissu2 dst pas season di London itu dan membuat Caitlyn merasa tertantang karena setiap kali Alex sll bilang "Gw gak akan nikahin lo!" dan Caitlyn nya jadi omong besar bilang akan membuat Alex ngelamar die, termasuk insiden yang Triona - Hugh dan membuat Alexander murka.

HEA sih.. Alex akhirnya sadar pas Caitlyn milih pulang.. ternyata hidup tanpa Caityn itu tidak menyenangkan.. (keknya ending novel yg gw baca mayoritas gini endingnya) LOL

The fourth book of the series and I think it was well written.

Alex and Caitlyn had great chemistry as they liked to challenge one another and with the wager they set, I liked how they continued to give ridiculous tasks to one another to prevent each other from winning the wager. I like the tasks, they were often silly and I laughed at some of them.

I liked the way the author put in other suitors for Caitlyn, which often made Alex jealous and question his feelings for Caitlyn.

Would have been nice if they had spent more time talking and getting to know each other’s true selves instead of playing their games & having sexual tension all the time. The sex could also have been improved.

The ending felt abrupt, I expected Alex to have much more inner thinking before he decided to go after Caitlyn. He could do more in asking Caitlyn to marry him instead of just words.

Though I wasn’t overly fond of Hugh’s & Triona’s story, I was a little sad when they couldn’t have a baby. I hope Mam’s potions help.

The author also briefly mentioned how Cait made fun of Alex, but a reenactment would be nice. Instead of describing the scene, it would be better if the author wrote the actual scene, as it would allow us to relate better.

I am disappointed by Karen’s writing. Maybe it isn’t my cup of tea. I’ll be taking a break from her books for a long time.

Hmmm... Yeah.... Its good....
Dont get me wrong it has all the elements, but, really, i had to drag myself through certain sections especially in the beginning of the book when the 2 persona's met again... Like seriously... every other paragraph was about the way the other, looked, smelled, felt to them, ... sometimes it was more their wanting and lust speaking than an actual conversation...

Also, I have been reading - ahum, lets correct, indulging!! all highland warriors romances lately - so then to end up at an English Courthouse Party... was a little different. ^.^

Anyway, what I did like about the book was that it was light due to game they were playing, it brought a sense of playfulness in it. Their relationship was actually also quiet flowing and there was no real suspension or something in the book.

This is my first book from the author... willing to try another book though to make more clear on how I feel upon her writings... <3

Wow, it's been a while I read HR novel again. Since my reading slump... And still in now. I mean I want to read but after getting the novel I want to read, it became really hard to keep concentrate in story. But well...

This is the third book I read about MacLean Curse... and I already forgot about stories of the other two.
Oh well...

This story is about Caitlyn Hurst which is twin Catriona Hurst who married with brother of Alexander... and that made two family married each other, right? O.O

Well... This girl is stupid. She's too much with energy and it exhausted me. And why every heroin and hero in this novel is too much into s... ups. I said it. I think I had too much about this and it get me bored. Ah, alas.

Well, for the final act? That is sweet, I like it.

The Laird Who Loved Me, by Karen Hawkins, was originally published in 2009. I found it one day while browsing around my favorite bookshop. I loved the cover, good looking man, and stopped to read the description. I bought my first Karen Hawkins book that day. The main characters are delightful and spark off each other nicely. The test/quest is an interesting plot maneuver, it added a sense of adventure and excitement to the story. The curse is interesting but the test is better. I rarely give 5 stars to any book, it's hard to be that good. The Laird Who Loved me gets 5 from me & made me a Karen Hawkins fan. I bought the other books in the series.

The only thing I could complain about this book is the age gap, but in that specific context and characters I think it's ok and it didn't bother me. Just the opposite, I really liked to see the hero wondering about it - and I was very glad they talked more about what both were doing before the last book cause I had this feeling that Cait was just overreacting a flirt, but no, it was both losing their minds.
