Poetry for Thinkers and Feelers: The Collected Works of Melody Godfred

Rate this book
From Self Love Philosopher Melody Godfred comes an audio experience embodying her collected poetry works – highly acclaimed Self Love Poetry: for Thinkers & Feelers, and its follow up, The Shift: Poetry for a New Perspective.
In Self Love Poetry, Melody introduces her signature style of dual poetry, with each pair of poems speaking to left brain thinkers and right brain feelers, and takes listeners on a self-love journey that activates not just the left and right brain, but the heart, body, and soul. In The Shift, Godfred again uses a dual style, this time using her poetry pairs to reframe how listeners move through a brave, new, post-pandemic world. Covering themes including authenticity, surrender, gratitude, and love, this unique poetry collection provides an uplifting salve for our collective burnout and inspires a hopeful outlook despite the overwhelming uncertainty of these times.

Melody Godfred is a poet, author, and speaker who is passionate about empowering people to love themselves and transform their lives.

Melody started her career as a litigation attorney, but soon realized a disconnect between her work and essence, so she left a prestigious position at a top law firm to launch Write In Color, her personal branding and career development company. She quickly established her reputation as a leader in the career development space. Through her work as a coach exploring the narratives of hundreds of women, and after undergoing several life transitions herself -- including motherhood -- Melody discovered a common trend: in their quest to fuel their careers and relationships, women were increasingly sacrificing their authentic selves, happiness and well-being.

Melody needed a reminder to choose herself each and every day and believed that other women did too, so she created the Self Love Pinky Ring, a self-commitment ring for women, and launched Fred and Far, her self love movement and community. Her ring and community instantly went viral around the world (Vogue, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, and more), and started a global conversation around self love.

In 2020, Melody published Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers, a collection of 200 poems that instantly became and remains a bestseller. One of her poems (“I thought 2020 would be the year I got everything I wanted. Now I know 2020 is the year I appreciate everything I have.”) was shared on social media by Oprah Magazine just before the Thanksgiving Holiday, quickly going viral and eventually reaching hundreds of millions of people, in addition to earning a feature on Today with Hoda and Jenna. In early 2021, Melody signed a book deal with Andrews McMeel Publishing, re-releasing Self Love Poetry and publishing two more books, The ABCs of Self Love, an illustrated guided journal, and The Shift: Poetry for a New Perspective. Her latest collection, Moon Garden: Poetry for Manifestation is coming out on October 21, 2025.

In 2025, Melody began leading moon circles blending poetry, movement, meditation and more.

Melody is a trusted thought leader whose advice has been featured on Inc., Forbes, Huff Post, Bustle, PayScale, Motherly, Mashable, The Muse, and Fairygodboss, among others. Melody was a featured speaker at the Teen Vogue Summit and The Massachusetts Conference for Women, and has led personal branding and operational workshops for Farfetch, Murad, The YWCA, and more. She received her law degree from Loyola Law School with honors.

Melody lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband Aaron Godfred and three kids, twin daughters Stella and Violet and son Teddy.

Her latest book, The Shift: Poetry for a New Perspective was released on September 27, 2022 (Andrews McMeel Publishing) and is a Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Best Poetry Book of 2022.

As a compilation of her works 'Self Love Poetry' and 'The Shift,'this is your one-stop-shop for Melody Godfred's poetry.

'Self Love Poetry' is a lovely little collection of just that— poetry and anecdotes encouraging both the author and her readers to let go of self doubt and embrace self love. At times generic and at times deeply personal, there is more than enough variety in this collection to resonate with a wide range of readers.

With Godfred pairing poems and anecdotes from before and after pandemic lockdowns in 'The Shift,' she poignantly illustrates hard truths we were all forced to examine and the beauty of the change that can come from uncomfortable reflection. Pandemic or no, this collection will speak to anyone going through a metamorphosis in their life. Be that a transition from high school to college, leaving your hometown, removing yourself from toxic relationships and environments, or even self-guided personal growth.

As with her individual works, this collection as an audiobook is narrated by Godfred herself and the content is all the better for it.

If you love poetry or like to have a book that you can pick up daily to reflect, please give it a read.

This collection of poems shows a lot of humanity and provides he reader with affirmations. There's a good combination of poems that are more frank in nature and provide little nuggets of wisdom while others are more abstract and romantic (romantic as in style not necessarily relationship focused). The narration flowed very well and was enjoyable; however, for full transparency, I do tend to prefer to read poetry than listen to it and that probably would have been my preference only for that reason.

I did really enjoy this one and would definitely give it another read. My personal favorite line from the book was "strength based on control is actually quite fragile." There were several moments in this collection that I just stopped and thought "wow, I really need to hear this some days."

Melody Godfred has such a beautiful way with words and I truly believe there’s something in here for everyone. This is her complete works, containing both Self Love Poetry and The Shift, as well as a series of meditations at the end which I really enjoyed.

I love both of these collections, though I find that I identify more with the themes in Self Love Poetry. I also really love the narration, Melody’s voice just lends so much warmth to these poems and makes them that much more impactful.

Highly recommend this for anyone looking for some soothing, inspiring poetry!

Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This is the complete work of Melody Godfred! I listened to Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers and Feelers at the beginning of the year. I listened to The Shift: Poetry For a New Perspective in the middle of the year. And for me to listen to them both again in this complete work at the end of the year is everything I needed! It just reconfirmed some things and it hit better. Also more poems or other poems stuck out to me more than it did previously! My journey of Self Love is everlasting and ongoing!

The author has an amazing way with weaving her words into magic.

She says everything that I am feeling and thinking.

I loved her as the narrator as well. To hear a poet's words from their mouth feels like a poetry reading in my car.

I felt like I was in therapy sessions. But I don’t know if I was quite ready for that.
