The Last Daughter #2

The Silent Son

Rate this book
Ailsa finds herself far from the foggy fjord she once called home, and yet her journey across the Nine has just begun. Armed and targeted with the power over fate, she seeks to master the magic in her blood before Fenrir and the witches rise again. Until Erik strips her from the arms of her beloved—and all memory of him—and takes her to the witches hiding in a realm of fire giants. To survive, Ailsa finds an ally in a strange, silent man who seems just as intent on escaping the giants as she is.

Anger, hatred, malice. Vengeance.
As Vali searches the Tree of Life for what was taken from him, his pursuit takes him across forbidden realms with two unexpected companions. With the threat of Ragnarok brimming on the horizon, Odin becomes desperate to find the son prophesied to slay Fenrir and stop the end of the Nine before it’s too late. And when Vali discovers the truth about his father, finding Ailsa becomes more crucial than ever.

With her newfound family as shattered as her memories, Ailsa must fight to know her past if she wants to save the future, even if it means turning old friends into new enemies. The blood left on her hands will force her to wonder where they will all stand in the end, and whom she will face on the opposite side when the time comes.

3.5 stars! 🌟 Huge thanks to Alexis L. Menard and BookSirens for the complimentary e-copy! 💌

Okay… deep breath 😮‍💨 I wanted to love this so bad because The Last Daughter had me in a chokehold, but this? This was a mixed bag. Two of my biggest bookish icks—separation 💔 and memory loss 🧠❌—and guess what? They were the main plot points. They weren’t done terribly, but still, I’m just not a fan. But the biggest offender? ERIK. WHYYY were there so many chapters of him whining?? 😩 He gave me major Apollo (OUABH) vibes—same brand of insufferable, different packaging. His POVs made my blood boil just like Apollo’s did in A Curse for True Love. Someone take both of them far, far away from my books 🚫📖.

Now, onto the good stuff—because despite my complaints, there was good stuff ✨. The Norse mythology? Immaculate 🏔️⚡. The action? Kept me hooked. The plot? Had me flipping pages like my life depended on it 📖💨. And Vali? My beloved ❤️. The way he fought for Ailsa, even when she didn’t remember him? Swoon 😍. Their love story gave me that even if the mind forgets, the heart remembers kind of vibe, and I ate that up. But did they have to be apart for most of the book?? 😭 I missed their dynamic so much, and while I appreciated their individual growth, I wanted more of them together 🥺.

As for Ailsa—our girl stayed strong despite everything, and I respect her for that. And when she finally put Erik in his place? CHEF’S KISS 👏✨. That man needed to hear it.

Overall, this was a solid conclusion to the duology, but the tropes and Erik’s whining kept me from loving it like I wanted to 🤷‍♀️. If you like Norse mythology ⚔️, high-stakes fantasy 🏹, and a romance that defies fate 💞, this one’s still worth a read. Just… prepare yourself for Erik. You’ve been warned. 🚨

3 or 3.5 stars… Unpopular review, I know…

This book picks up not long after The Last Daughter ends. Ailsa and Vali are staying with Njord and Freya, and Ailsa is training to hone her new powers in order to be able to complete her quest before it’s too late and Ragnarok comes to pass. As if that’s not enough responsibility and stress, Erik, who had embarked on a mission to save Ailsa, finally finds her and is dead set on bringing her home and keeping her away from Vali.

At the beginning of the book, Ailsa is being trained by Freya and Njord to help her master her powers. I do understand Njord’s involvement as he was teaching her about her control over fate, but Freya’s teachings seemed to be mostly focused on pleasure and intimacy, which I don’t really get. How is this going to help Ailsa in her quest? It seemed more like a way for the author to add smut, than a truly useful addition to the plot.

That being said, it was nice to learn more about the gods and goddesses and their relationships and backstories. We also see more of the different realms in this book, and it was nice to have an expansion of the world-building, as well as a change in the setting, but I have to admit that I am not a fan of the “lovers being separated for most of the book” trope, so it annoyed me a little bit that it took so long for Vali and Ailsa to finally find their way back to each other.

Ailsa remains a strong and driven character, and I like that she didn’t completely change just because she lost some of her memories. She continued to trust her instincts and to stand up for herself, and she did not hesitate to let Erik know how she felt about his controlling/alpha-douchebag attitude.

“My world begins and ends with you, Ailsa. It always has and always will.”

“I fell for Ailsa like the rain falls for the earth. Slowly, gradually, drop by drop over time, then all at once in a downpour. It was slow and testing at first, then hard and fast and treacherous. As for how or why she fell for me,” he shook his head and laughed at the thought, “I was lucky for the first time in a hundred years.”

I really like Vali and Ailsa together, but as I said at the beginning of the review, the fact that they are apart for a big part of the book was not my favorite part. I like their strength when they are together, and while it was nice to see Ailsa’s character development when she was stuck on her own, I think I would have preferred for her and Vali to spend more time together and build an even stronger bond, especially after the whole “memory loss” part.

Speaking of the memory loss trope, it was a good one, and I liked the idea, I also like the fact that Ailsa didn’t just magically gain back all of her memories after a few chapters, it was not a trope added just for the sake of adding drama, it shaped the characters and their journey in this book, and it also showed us how desperate and how blind Erik was when it came to Ailsa.

Erik was not a villain exactly, because while he created a lot of trouble for Ailsa and Vali, his goal at first was mostly to save Ailsa. Sure, he also wanted to own her, and he decided that he wanted her only when he lost her in the first book, so I am not saying that he is a smooth romantic guy at all, but his intentions were not too bad at first. It started to get worse when he realized that maybe he’d been lied to and Ailsa didn’t need to be saved, but he decided to go through with his plans anyway and to continue to try to control Ailsa “for her own good”. I was so happy that Ailsa was strong enough to put him back in his place and to tell him to go f*ck himself when he tried to control her.

“I feel sorry for you. That you did not know what you had when you had it, that you only want me because someone else values what you did not. But I am not a land you can take back, nor a title you can win. If you stopped seeing me as a conquest, you would have realized all these things before you left.”

I would not say that there is a love triangle because Ailsa clearly loves Vali, but Erik’s presence in this book stirs some sh*t up for sure, but not in a way that I particularly enjoyed. Vali acts like an immature, jealous man and Ailsa is too obstinate to really listen to his worries, and it quickly became frustrating. Thankfully, they managed to talk it out and resolve the issue quickly. I do enjoy angstier relationships, but the way it happened made it feel more like a lack of communication and petty jealousy, than real angst. Vali’s jealousy was not sexy at all, honestly, I was disappointed in him and his reaction, especially considering how old he is.

“I want you to mark me, claim me, remind me why I belong to you. Ruin me all over again, Vali.”

Thank you Ailsa and Vali for taking me on this grand and heavily emotional adventure and it's with a heavy heart now that we get to part ways after The Silent Son.

Ailsa and Vali face stakes higher than they have imagined as Ragnarok is nearing and the nine realms are to meet their end.

They are surrounded by unexpected allies and deceitful foes. Ailsa needs to master her magic and is taken to lands unknown to her, and Vali must choose between vengeance and redemption as he goes on a journey to restore what is most precious to him.

I must say two of my least favorite tropes were the reason why the sequel did not get a 5-star from me like it's predecessor.

The separation felt too long for me. While I do appreciate the growth both characters experienced on their own, but I just missed having them together so much.

I'm delighted to see some of the secondary character get more page time (and POV chapters). I think the author did a great job at fleshing out most of the characters and having them contribute to a minor/major part of the plot.

I continue to be in awe of how authors create such compelling and beautifully crafted stories from mythologies and this duology is a love letter to Norse Mythology.

Trigger warnings are listed in the review of The Last Daughter however expect violence and death.

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who has supported this duology so far. If you're reading this, it probably means you've either read book 1 and are now looking up the next installment, or the first book has interested you in some way to look into this one. Either way, I'm so glad you're here!

This story was a passion project from the beginning. I have a massive love for viking culture, Norse mythology, and of course, fantasy romance. When I couldn't find those three things in a book, I decided to buy all the research material and write my own, not knowing if anyone else would ever be interested. Thankfully, I found some kindred spirits along the way.

I finished writing The Last Daughter when I found out I was pregnant with my second child. I finished writing The Silent Son two weeks before I delivered. So many of my fears, insecurities, and life lessons from those nine months were poured into this story. This saga ends in a way a chapter of my own life closed, and I think you'll understand what I mean when you read the last chapter!

I also wanted to say thank you so much for every review, star, and share. It's truly a dream of mine to make up people and stories and write spicy scenes I pretend my family won't read later. I hope you all enjoy this saga as much as I've enjoyed writing it!

Skol!

Very disappointed...

The first book was fun, beautifully written and original. The second book (to me) was a mess. It lost cohesion and had everything but the kitchen sink thrown in to try and keep things interesting. Alas, it failed (in my heartbroken opinion) and ended with me not really caring about the characters or their happy for now ending. 😮‍💨

I really tried hard to love this book. I got so attached to the world and people woven so magically together in The Last Daughter that I thought The Silent Son was gonna fly onto my favorites shelf but, no.

I found so many things to dislike about this book that I'd love to write a big long rant. But I won't, I don't want to be mean, I'm just disappointed. 😔

I was so privileged to get an arc copy of this book, the second in an amazing Norse mythology inspired duolagy. This book was everything, and together one of the best duolagy I have ever read. Continuing with Ailsa and Vali story as they fight fate and a crazy ex to save the nine realms and all those they love against the coming of Ragnarok. This was such a high paced story hitting so many emotions I could not put it down. And the spice was so delicious adding to the intimacy of their bond.

"There are no strands of time where I would not choose us."

what. an. ending.
@alexislmenard have I mentioned that I'm absolutely OBSESSED and in love with every single thing you write. like even the bad guys 🤣

The Silent Son is the final book in The Last Daughter Duology, and if you haven't read the first book, go do that. like right now. you have about six ish more days before this one comes out, and you don't want to miss it.
I will admit, I cried. a lot. that last fifteen percent HURT. I haven't felt this emotional over an ending in a while.

I loved Ailsa in book one, but this made me fall even more. I just love how strong her character is and her development and growth was SO interesting to read. and I definitely love her and Vali together. their banter was so much fun and their chemistry had me invested from page one. there are a few new characters you meet in this one (if you are familiar with some of the mythology you'll definitely recognize their names), and I absolutely adore them too. specifically a certain silent son ;)
and we got a few more POVs in this one! I'm very happy that Seela got more page time in this one, she was another favorite from book one.

I loved how the author wove together pieces of norse mythology, vikings and fantasy elements to give us this incredible work of art. the world building in this one is another one of my favorite parts. it's just so vivid and I know I was definitely looking forward to seeing more of the Realms in book one, and I got it in this one.
the writing is incredible, the characters are absolutely amazing, and I was definitely hooked from start to finish. if you're in the mood for anything I just mentioned, you *definitely* need to check this out.

here are a couple more quotes that I absolutely loved btw:
- “There will always be an enemy who is stronger. There will always exist an evil that feels too great to challenge. But that does not mean we should lie down and give up. Power dwells not in strength or magic, but in faith . Believe in yourself for a moment, Vidar, and nothing in the Nine will ever make you weak again.”
- Sagas such as theirs didn’t end like this. Evil never triumphed in the legends. The heroes didn’t die without claiming their victory. Where was Vali’s redemption? Where was his victory? Where was her revenge?
- I fell for Ailsa like the rain falls for the earth. Slowly, gradually, drop by drop over time, then all at once in a downpour. It was slow and testing at first, then hard and fast and treacherous.

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 stars.

Absolutely loved!!! The perfect conclusion to Vali and Ailsa’s little duet.

Full of lore, plot, world building, humour, tension and delightful writing.

In general, I think my favourite thing about Alexis’ books is her writing. I sometimes struggle with getting into fantasy books, but her writing is so easy to absorb without being simplistic.

Also can I just say - rap battles??? I was HOWLING!! Didn’t expect this book to be so funny hahaha

Loved it🖤

Alexis has once again reminded me why she’s one of my favorite authors and I devour every single book she writes. I’d been (semi) patiently waiting for The Silent Son to come out and that wait was absolutely worth it!
The Last Daughter is one of my top 5 books and The Silent Son was just as fantastic, if not a little more-so. The Silent Son kept me enthralled to the very end. Chapter 26 alone took me through one of the best emotional roller coasters a book has taken me on.
Ailsa is one of the most badass heroines in any book I’ve read. She knows who she is, doesn’t apologize or bend for anyone (well maybe to one person in a spicy way), but still keeps her heart for those she loves. The retribution she takes on those who took her memories was so satisfying. Vali, sweet Vali, will forever remain one of my fav book boyfriends. I hate to see their story end but I loved every moment of it.
Having the addition of Seela’s POV was great and her own relationship in this book was just as supportive and gratifying as Alisha & Vali’s. “Fly high sweetheart. You were made to touch the stars” had me melting.

Thank you Alexis for an ARC of this book. I can’t wait to see what you read next!

What are coherent thoughts? At this point I just don't know.
All I know for sure is that Vali and Ailsa are absolutely everything.

This was a beautiful continuation and end to Ailsa and Vali's story.
Since I read the Last Daughter last year, I have missed them so much. This was my number one most highly anticipated read for 2023 and it did not disappoint!!
It sincerely blows my mind how incredibly Alexis writes. I felt every bit of pain, of love, of hope through these characters. I felt as if I was right there in the midst of the chaos with them. And let me tell you, there was some chaos (shoutout to Loki hehe)

This book throws your heart around your ribcage one minute and then lovingly puts it back into its rightful place the next. And I loved every single second of the emotional whiplash.

My jaw dropped when the title of the book finally came into play. I just 😭😭😭😭 So GOOD!!!

It's only bittersweet because I will now dearly miss Ailsa, Vali, Seela, Enver, Ivor, and even Erik..

just kidding, go to Hel Erik <3

I enjoyed this book, but did not love it. I, once again, loved the take on elfin, Norse mythology, fae, dwarves, etc all in one book. The Norse take went down the path of the Ragnarok storyline so you can expect all things witchy and burning and Loki. Can’t go wrong there!

With any book following numerous POVs, you run the risk of not being partial to at least one. And for me, it was Seela’s in this book. I found myself taking breaks anytime it was her chapter. However, I did warm up to Enver by the end!

Some things felt either drawn out or pointless? Did we need Ailsa so be a prisoner? Was she really necessary for Ragnarok? Erik needed to stay dead. His 5 minute scene on the battlefield was inconsequential and maybe just an excuse for a quick revenge?

I did like Vali getting to meet Ailsa’s sisters and mother! Best quote of the book:

““I will volunteer,” Lochare said. “Spare Marrin and pick me, Vali. If it means you both get to Muspell, then choose me.” “Fuck off, Lochare,” Marrin spat at her sister. “I’d rather they use my skull as a toilet than let them harm you.” “And I’d be the first one to shit in you if you did such a thing. Absolutely not,” her sister argued.”

Silent Son jumps right back into the storyline from The Last Daughter (Book 1).

Side note: HOW AMAZING IS THIS COVER!!

There is SO much that happens in this book and i don’t want to spoil anything so i will just say that it is a roller coaster of emotions where you are happy, excited, angry, and shocked. I loved that there were many times in this book where the plot wasn’t predictable and moved along smoothly. We received POVs from Vali, Ailsa, Seela, and Erik; & that really helped me understand where everything was going and also what was going on. I really enjoyed the Norse Mythology that Alexis keeps strong throughout the book. This really gave me Marvel Endgame vibes… THATS HOW INTENSE IT WAS! Overall, this was an awesome ending to this duology. I wouldnt mind maybe a little extended epilogue of Vali and Ailsa in the future 😏😍

So it’s been so long since I read the prequel that I actually didn’t remember anything at all, but it didn’t really matter cause I still had a lot of fun!

First 25% was kinda boring to the point where I almost wanted to DNF but once we passed that, it was very fast paced. We have three different POVs doing three different things, so it managed to hold my attention the rest of the book.

I was confused on some of the Norse mythology I won’t lie. Maybe I wouldn’t have if I had remembered anything from the first book but oh well. Didn’t ruin the experience for me though.

The romance was sweet and the angst factor was definitely there. I was also more invested in the side characters than I anticipated being so that was nice as well.

Overall, pretty solid duo I think.

“There is nothing in the Nine Realms that will keep me from you, elskan min.”

“There will always be an enemy who is stronger. There will always exist an evil that feels too great to challenge. But that does not mean we should lie down and give up.”

-

The Silent Son follows 3 different POV: Ailsa, Vali, and Erik. It starts off where The Last Daughter left off (us absolutely despising Erik). I mean can the guy take a hint?!

Ailsa. I absolutely love her. She’s strong and independent. She knows what she wants. She’s wise and can’t be easily fooled.

Vali. I love his devotion towards Ailsa. I have no words, I just adore him.

I honestly just really love Ailsa and Vali, individually and together. Ultimately, they chose to be together, it has always been a choice and I love that about their relationship. When all hell broke loose, I had strong fate that they would overcome it. The spice? IT WAS HOT AF! I live for those moments and the sweet, sweet banter.

Erik. What can I say? I really didn’t like him. I am glad for POV but it’s still a no. The guy cannot take a hint. He may think that what he’s doing is for the good, but, come on dude. I had a moment of weakness and actually felt bad for him. But, ultimately, he got what he deserved.

I am so happy for Seela’s character growth. I didn’t expect Ivor or Loki to do that they did, but they did it, even the Gulveig.

The Silent Son had some surprising moments that I didn’t see coming. One thing is for sure, the Allfather was busy, Ailsa and Vali’s love for each other withstands EVERYTHING, and I’m going to miss them.

Actual Rating: 3.5⭐

A pretty good conclusion for The Last Daughter duology, a fantasy romance with Norse Mythology vibes about betrayal, vengeance, love and fates.

The world building is fascinating as we go deeper to learn more about the Norse Mythology elements like the background story of some of the Gods and Goddess.
The plot is also filled with angsty moments and action-packed with great battle scenes.

Told in multiple POVs, the readers get insights not only for the main characters but the villain and also the secondary characters which is a great touch.
Told in multiple POVs, the readers get insights not only for the main characters but the villain and also the secondary characters which is a great touch.
The new character addition which has a link to the title of the book is a nice surprise to the plot and I really enjoy that.

The main characters - Vali and Ailsa, are once again facing another obstacle with their relationship, I adore their strength together as a couple. Their love is prove that even if the mind forgets, the heart still remembers what they had and I love that about them.

As much as I like the plot and the romance, it took a while for me to understand what happen. This might happen since I already forgot what happen from the first book, so I suggest reading the first book or re-read it first before reading the sequel to refresh your memories.

Overall, it’s a pretty good sequel and as a duology I really like the unique plot and world building.
I’m looking forward to read other books from this author in the future!

This is a spoiler free review for The Silent Son, but it contains spoiler for previous books (The Last Daughter)

If you've read The Last Daughter and liked it, I can save you some time - you will love The Silent Son. End of review. 😏🤣

After the end of the first book in this duet, I thought okay shit will hit the fan real quick, but happy for us we got a few moments of happiness with our beloved characters. 🥰

I knew Erik will mean trouble, but oh boy 🤬🤬🤬. It was obvious what is coming, but Alexis did it really well to let us wait for the inevitable to happen. There were some small moments when I though "Yes, he used his brain and will stop this nonsense" but no...

Ailsa and Vali 😱🥺💔 these two had to work trough soooo much in this one. If you think this will be a eventless ride with this longboat, think again. Everything that could go wrong - did go wrong. 🤣🤣 But again, I'm so amazed by Aisla and her ability to fight for herself and her loved ones, and that she did actually use her brain and heart to decide what to do.

I fell for Ailsa like the rain falls for the earth. Slowly, gradually, drop by drop over time, then all at once in a downpour. It was slow and testing at first, then hard and fast and treacherous. As for how or why she fell for me, I was lucky for the first time in a hundred years.

Special shout-out to Seela 🤩, Vidar, and Ivor!
And the end, wow, I really liked how Alexis put all threats together for this epic end.

It's over now...isn't it? 😭😭😭😭

Read if you like:
- Multi POV
- Norse Mythology
- Strong FMCs and swoon-worthy MMC
- fated lovers

"My world begins and ends with you, Ailsa. It always has and always will."

The Silent Son is the second and final novel in the Last Daughter Duology, a High Fantasy Romance following the characters Aisla and Vali as they face the oncoming threat of Ragnorak. Yet more insidious threats loom far closer around the lover and threaten to tear them apart. There is hope that lies in a prophecy about a powerful son and he may be the key to bring them back together...if they are able to find him.

When I read The Last Daughter I was enthralled with this series. It grew into this beautiful fantasy journey with a powerful romance and I was so excited to dive into this one. This conclusion does not disappoint.

Aisla continues to be a strong and fierce character. Her love of Vali in unquestionable but her connection to her past puts things into question as she struggles with finding her place. There were elements left unresolved that no amount of love could fix. I also understood her motives and admired her tenacity and independence as she is forced to find answers in a place unfamiliar with people who are hiding things from her. She grew in this novel in ways I hadn't expected but I felt it did her justice.

Vali pulled on my heartstrings so much. Despite being this powerful figure there are some innate vulnerabilities in him. I loved seeing this balance of vulnerability and power as it made me feel really connected to his journey and success. I never doubted his love of Aisla and he gave me the same delicious feelings as his did in the first novel. He is forced to confront his actions in the past and I enjoyed this slight redemptive aspect.

We get additional POVs of Erik and Seela in the novel which helped broaden the world. I felt Erik was a good contrast to the love we see in Vali and Aisla and it made them appreciate me their love so much more. Seela's journey was also really engaging as we got to see her stand on her own and it rounded out her ending so well to see how to evolved.

This novel does contain spice. I would say around 2 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers as we get a few beautiful scenes between the characters. The romance is a journey in this novel and pulled on my heart so many times. There is spicy within the first 15% as these characters are in an established relationship but there is a chunk of text where they are separated so you still has this gradual romance ebb and flow. I love Vali and Ailsa and I want more of these two as these two books was not enough!

"I fell for Aisla like rain falls for the earth. Slowly, gradually, drop by drop over time, then all at once in a downpour..."

The lore and world in this story grew throughout the journey. I loved exploring Ragnorak and the prophecies around it. I also enjoyed adventuring into the different locations of Nordic mythology and engaging with different figures. This lore and world building flowed well into the story and I felt I had a good understanding of the world created without any info dumping.

The story itself has branches going off for different characters and I really loved seeing the characters be able to make these journeys. There is tension, action, betrayal, and twists that were a delight to confront as we get this end of the world prophecy mixed with search for knowledge that infused Nordic mythology well into the book. I appreciated the separation but yearned for the reconciliation that was just beautiful at the end. The payout was incredibly worth it! There was this fascinating twist at the end I wasn't expecting that made the ending so sweet for Vali and Aisla. I would love to have some slices of life for these two in the future because I am not ready to let go.

This series was an absolute delight. The fantasy, the romance, the lore, and the conflict blended so well and had me devouring this novel in a single evening. I am very quickly becoming an avid Alexis L. Menard fan.

Thank you Alexis for the ARC!

P.S. Check out the amazing art on Alexis' IG page after you read the book because it will give you so many feels when you realize the significance!

I have mixed feelings about this book.
One one hand, I want to give it five stars for being really entertaining and well made. It made me laugh and frown in all the right places and I have thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful fantasy walk though Norse realms.

On the other hand, I want to give this book two stars for issues that I found with the writing, the characters and the world. Let's get into this mixed feeling of a review.

Staring off, this is a fantasy romance set in Viking realms with magic, betrayal and love.
I did start this book without having read the first one, thinking I would be able to get away with it. Mostly, I was able to figure out the previous plot from the happenings in the second one. However, having no previous knowledge of the first book, I did mix up the two love interests, genuinely thinking for a few pages that the asshole of the story was truly trying to save Ailsa from a demon. Oh boy how wrong I was.

I found myself pulled along with good pacing and witty banter. The plot twists were fun and engaging if a bit predictable. The supporting characters had enough space and were well developed with great personalities!

I did find myself getting caught in a few issues with the characters and the world-building.
There is a bit of a fight in the beginning of the book between the FMC and the MMC where the MMC shows some pretty nasty emotional manipulative behaviour. As a victim of the same behaviour, I did feel that it was unnecessary to have that in what is supposed to be the main love relationship. That kind of behaviour should be reserved for the asshole Erik.
I also found myself getting stuck on small insignificant world inconsistencies. The author have made a lot of research into the culture of the Norsemen, yet there were some parts that fell a bit flat, especially the behaviour of the men toward women. It is an established fact that women had a high standing in Norse society, with divorces, inheritance and autonomy. While the author have done an amazing research in terms of the mythologies and the language, she did miss a bit on the actual culture.

All in all, I did enjoy this book and it's action and the banter between the characters. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the old norse and mythology!

I have received this as an advanced review copy for free. Receiving this book for free have in no way, shape or form affected the honesty of this review.

EN: Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC my opinion was not affected by it.

Here the story continues about Alisa and Co. That's why you should have read volume 1 to understand the connections. Again, we follow the same character views but get one more. At the beginning I used it for a while until I found my way back to the story, but I still knew exactly the ending and was therefore curious about what to expect. Although I'm not a fan of the new perspective, I didn't like his behavior in particular, but it took the story in different directions and I was curious where the goal would lead us. I'm not the biggest fan of the Loki mythology, but I did enjoy it here to some extent. I especially liked Seela's views and I was also a fan of the love story. All in all it was a good conclusion to Dialogie and I liked reading this book in advance and I hope it will find many readers who can immerse themselves in the story and immerse themselves in a mystical world.

I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not entirely sure why I didn't like the sequel as much as the first book, but here we are. Something felt off, maybe the fact that we're made to care for the Norse gods so quickly, all in all, without really getting to know them? I mean I'm partial to Freya but my partiality comes from God of War rather than the few times she pops in here.

THAT ASIDE, I liked that the fight in Ailsa never left her. I loved how she told Erik where to shove it - especially as she finally figured out he just wanted her for the sake of not letting anyone else have her.

Of course if she hadn't been an idiot and listened to Vali in the first place ...

And you can't tell me she wasn't. Vali asks her point blank how she'd feel if he paraded one of his ex lovers in front of her and she practically caves in with the pain. But goes and keeps doing it to him anyway because in her logic it isn't the same thing.

I'll admit - I liked her way more without her memories and learning truths that way, because with the memories she was becoming too insufferable and a know-it-all.

But she and Vali DO have a love story for the ages, and I'm glad to have read through this interpretation of Ragnarøk. Norse mythology has always captivated me so this duology was a no brainer, perhaps best read one directly after another.

It's still a bit confusing since everyone seems to be fae at points and then there's Elves and Dwarves and Giants and whatnot, which twists and turns until I at least wasn't sure where anyone belonged anymore.

Characters who deserved it bit it, characters who emerged as heroes got their happily ever afters. But I really need to read back on this life bonding thing because I can't remember what the first book said about it. This second might have retconned some stuff but I can't be sure until checking so I'll refrain there.

Overall, a solid read where no one is entirely good or bad (unless you're Erik), characters discover new facets and depths of themselves, and the End of all Ends arrives. Absolutely recommend for any Norse mythos fan!

The Silent Son is the second book in The Last Daughter duology. This time, we follow Ailsa and Vali as they face the looming threat of Ragnarok and those that are working against them.

We start back with Ailsa and Vali, training in preparation for what is to come. Vali's mother is also still sick, which is a constant in the back of Vali's mind. Then, who shows up? Erik. Every time I saw Erik's name in the chapter heading, I frowned and thought 'Oh here we go' (Erik got what he deserved :) ). Ailsa and Vali are then separated due to Erik's meddling, and for a large chunk of the book we follow Ailsa and Vali on their separate journeys - Ailsa to save herself, and Vali to find her.

I love learning more about the world and the lore of Ragnarok. I love engaging with different mediums of Norse mythology - after playing both of the new 'God of War's I was like 'I get that reference!'. There are twists on the characterisation of mythological people that we know otherwise from other mediums (Loki at the end! Gah). Plus, we got to go to more realms (Muspell/Muspelheilm) and explore more of the world.

Throughout the story, I yearned for Vali and Ailsa to be together again but I loved the journey that they went through separately. And the guest star that Ailsa meets in Muspell! The ending caused such heartbreak but also delight when all of the storylines come to fruition.

I will miss everyone in this series! Ailsa and Vali's love, Seela and Evner's determination, even Loki's trickster nature - but not you Erik. This duology is perfect for someone looking for fantasy romance that is a little bit different to those flooding the market at the moment.

Thank you so much to Alexis for providing me with an advanced reader's copy of The Silent Son! It is due to be published on April 12, 2023.

The Silent Son, the second installment in The Last Daughter series by Alexis L. Menard, is a hauntingly beautiful fusion of Norse mythology, epic romance, and soul deep character exploration. It expands on everything that made the first book compelling mythic scope, emotional intensity, and moral tension while delving into darker, more intimate territory.

Ailsa’s journey, now stretched across the Nine Realms, brims with pain and purpose. Torn from everything familiar including the arms of the one she loves and stripped of her memories, she becomes both weapon and wanderer. Menard crafts her struggle for identity and mastery of fate with such raw, aching humanity that every victory feels hard-earned and every betrayal deeply personal.

Parallel to Ailsa’s path, Vali’s storyline unfolds with cinematic grandeur. His desperate quest through forbidden realms to reclaim what was stolen from him captures both the heroic and the tragic. The tension between prophecy and free will, between vengeance and love, builds toward a crescendo that evokes the power of Ragnarok itself not just as an apocalyptic event, but as a metaphor for personal rebirth.

Menard’s prose is elegant yet fierce, her imagery rich with elemental energy fire, frost, blood, and destiny. She balances mythic stakes with emotional realism, allowing readers to feel both the vastness of her world and the vulnerability of her characters. The dynamic between Ailsa and Vali crackles with longing and danger, while the threads of prophecy and betrayal keep readers gripped until the final page.

The Silent Son isn’t just a sequel it’s an ascension. A story about what remains when memory fades, when love is fractured, and when gods and mortals alike must choose between destiny and desire.

A magnificent continuation of a mythic saga that fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sarah J. Maas, and Madeline Miller will absolutely devour.

The first few chapters of this book, I wasn’t sure I’d love it as much as the first, but boy was I wrong.

The story follows ~3 story lines, all converging to one banger of a plot point. We get to follow Seela and her arc after Vali finds his Fraendi, how she works to lead as regent in his stead. We follow Vali on his path of Vegeance, and Ailsa on her path to protect the Nine. Each path was action packed, making my heart pound and my mind race.

The biggest flaw of this story was not having a beautiful map to go with it, as there is so much travel through the realms, I found myself wishing time and time again for a map of the Nine. When that’s the story’s biggest flaw, I think it says a lot.

We meet a few new characters that are everything. I loved Enver’s part in this story. I kept expecting a sinister twist of fate, but everything he does for Seela has my heart melting

Vidar may be my all time favorite, showing how even one “forgotten” can change the tides of fate, and how being kind and being a friend can make the world of difference.

Then there are Ailsa’s sisters. They are kickass as ever, even in the Underworld. I loved seeing them in action, fighting their way through Hel, and finding their sister’s heart mate worthy.

But of course, the love Vali and Ailsa have for each other crosses lives and spans realms. For me, any amazing story has a deep love in it, and their love is one for eternity. Vali never stops fighting for Ailsa, and she never lets her mind overcome her heart to lead her astray.

The story ends perfectly wrapped up in a way that I’m content with, but looking back over my notes, I’d love to see what happens next, or what these new characters get up to either in the mean time, as prequels, or after the story ends.

Overall, a great read!

I received this ARC/book in exchange of an honest review!

I knew this book would bring me on an emotional rollercoaster right from the start! I’d seen some sneak peaks from Alexis Insta, but still I wasn’t prepared for it!

In this book we get to read in multiple POVs, Ailsa, Vali, Seela and Erik. First I didn’t think I would enjoy reading about the other characters along with Ailsa and Vali, but I was happily surprised that I enjoyed it!(Yes, even Erik.)

Erik, this god damn excuse of a man. I don’t wanna spoil anything, but if there was a character I was able to actually slap across the face, hard, he is now one of them I would put in the top of the list. Him constantly telling Ailsa she should feel grateful for him rescuing her, and her more or less being in debt to him. That SHE is the one who should basically worship him. Every time he opened his mouth he deserved to be punched in the face.

Ailsa is a powerhouse. I love this woman and there isn’t much to be said about her. With everything she is going through she is fighting till the very end with her head held high, and never letting anyone telling her what to do or feel!

Vali, there isn’t much to say about this man. He worships Ailsa with every cell of his being, and he would go to hell and back for this woman! He know damn well Ailsa is powerful in her way and doesn’t try to minimize her or be overprotective in any sense.
I mean, we get quotes and conversations like this:
”You, a god, would do that for a single mortal?”
”Goddess, for Ailsa I would die a thousand deaths if it meant she’d be free.”

Seela, I wasn’t prepared to get a POV from her, was it my favorite, no. But I did still enjoy it and loved seeing a bit of ”behind the scenes” and more details to what was happening in the story! She has has an amazing character growth, and I would have loved to have seen even more from her!

We get an interesting and different story, along with amazing characters, some spicy scenes and a beautiful ending. What’s not to love???

In the end, there was not one, but two tropes that I sadly don’t enjoy reading about. Im still happy about this ending, because these two deserves the world, but it made me lower my grade a little bit, in the sense of how I felt about this story.

It's been a while since I read the first book in this series and ever since I read that first book I've been reading more Norse mythology inspired stories. I was therefore incredibly curious if I'd recognize more names, themes and events this time around. I was mostly curious to discover what this second book would be about, especially since the last chapter of the first book was quite a cliffhanger. I was therefore really happy that I found an arc on BookSirens.

I really profited from having a little more knowledge when it comes to Norse mythology. Just like the first book this second book is filled with names, events and talk about previous events. It really does help if some of those names and events ring familiar. Although in this case it also made me a little anxious of the finale of the book. After all, I did know that Ragnarok is not the best thing main characters can end up in.

For a little moment I was afraid that a big part of this book would be a repetition of the first book. Memory loss is often handled as some sort of reset device after all. However, the author did an amazing job making sure that despite the memory loss the story never fells like more of the same. It felt more like the memory loss was helping our characters to discover who they could be without the other. Luckily, minor spoiler, the reunion does happen at some point.

At times this book feels like a little much and yet I'm incredibly thankful that the author gave so many characters a voice and the chance to tell their story. Just like I love all the side adventures our characters had to go on to reach their goal. Those side adventures were showing us this rich world and were telling us as many stories as possible. If you're familiar with Norse mythology it will be a joy to recognize so much. If you're new to it this series will certainly make you curious to read more.

I remember the first book end well for a while because Vali and Ailsa get to rest after what happen with them but I know Eric would be a disaster in the second book.

As the final book of this duology, I think the author execute the conflict really well. The book broaden its POV. We got others POV like Seela and Eric, and of course Ailsa and Vali as well. This additional POV make it complicated, too many happen at the same time. It's not too hard too follow actually but while reading this I know that the conflict is much more than the first book. Many things happen, many stories out to make the world become more complex. Every new character that actually have their own part in this book.

After reading the blurb, I kind of afraid because Ailsa lost her memory. I don't really like that kind of plot especially when our couple start as enemies. I was afraid what Vali and Ailsa have in the first book must reappear again but once again the author did it well. No unnecessary drama between the couple but it's a way to strengthen their bond, develop their relationship even more. And actually the romance plot is decrease a lot than the first book, we even see Vali and Ailsa only at the beginning and ending of the book. But I still love their relationship here. What mind forget heart will remember, and it really happen to them.

The conflict execute well, the war, the problem between Odin and others, what happen to Vali and others, break my heart but at the same time I love how it end. And actually I kind of guess this "Silent Son" role in this book and hoping not come between Vali and Ailsa, and I wish he could have more in this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

🧡🧡 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🧡🧡

I literally have no words. None. I have laughed, cried, and been left in awe of this story, the characters, and the world Alexis L. Menard has created.

This picks up where The Last Daughter left off and it is immediate action, passion and adventure. The way Alexis writes, I swear it's laced with the most beautiful magic that never releases me. I'm always *patiently* waiting for the next book.

Case in point ⬇️

“𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠. 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑏𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑢𝑙.”

(And yes this book will rip your heart out.)

Since this is book two I don't want to spoil anything, so my lengthy review of its amazing-ness will be on my GR.

I'm so sad to say goodbye to these characters, but the growth that each book written by Menard has taken, has me excited for what she will write next!

I cannot emphasis enough how much I love this story! The Last Daughter (Book 1) was the first ARC I’ve ever received/reviewed when I was new to bookstagram and I instantly fell in love with the amazing characters, the Norse/Viking Mythology inspired plot, and the stunning world building based of the Tree of Life and the Nine Realms. Needless to say The Silent Son delivers on all fronts as the perfect sequel and conclusion to Ailsa and Vali’s story.

The Silent Son picks right up where we last left our two main characters in Vanaheim and the storyline and action are executed flawlessly throughout. As Ailsa and Vali are facing the oncoming threat of Ragnorak their journey persists through the Nine Realms. I loved the introduction of the new realms, characters, and obstacles that are impeccably blended into this book! The conflict between Vali and Ailsa is heart wrenching and beautifully written, the adventure is continuous, and the stakes are intensified!

I adore Ailsa and Vali’s romance and I love how Alexis Menard shapes their relationship while simultaneously showing their growth as individual and independent characters. The villains are delicious and once again her portrayal of the Norse Gods and mythological beings is so well developed and expertly researched that they not only compliment her storytelling but heighten the entire literary experience of this book. The angst, betrayals, heartbreak, vendettas, and obstacles these characters experience are expertly woven and make for a delightfully unforgettable story!

Alexis Menard’s The Silent Son is stunningly written, passionately and thoroughly researched, and perfectly concluded. I devoured this book and consider it one of my new favorite duologies! Thank you so much for my ARC!
