Bryce Chapman is an Emergency Medicine Physician in Indianapolis, married with two kids and at the peak of his career. His comfortable life is threatened on all fronts when a patient he sees dies unexpectedly and a life saved while on vacation in the Bahamas turns into an attack on his freedom.
He is sued for malpractice, in danger of losing his job, and a warrant is out for his arrest. He must determine what caused his patient to die in order to stop a massive malpractice settlement. Faced with an arrest warrant in the Bahamas, he struggles to prove he is falsely accused by the person whose life he saved.
Bryce engages the help of his wife, several colleagues and friends to fight for his family and his career. Once he determines what happened to his patient, he struggles with the “do no harm” portion of his oath. Is justice and retribution required in order for redemption to be his?
This Was an OK Story, With a Better Ending Than a Beginning
This books seems pretty intent on introducing the character of Bryce Chapman, with in-depth accounts of his background and misteaks in life. Due to the latter, this book has several boring parts that have nothing to do with a story that’s supposed to be a medical thriller/mystery.
And there are logistic problems with the story context. For instance, there was a patient death, and a doctor who said he did what he could a few days before the death, explaining to his chief why his level of care was more than adequate. THEN, after a meeting with hospital attorneys, the chief told someone that the primary doctor thought the death was suspicious and might have been a murder! Only, The Author never wrote any such conversation anywhere in the book, prior to this statement being made. — And an update — This Author appears to have many instances of talking about something that was supposed to have been previously discussed — only it hadn’t. Is this a set of editing errors or writing mishaps?!? (I’m guessing the latter, but will admit the former is a strong possibility.)
I intend to read (or, at least start) the next book in the series, but only with a hope that the story arc will be more interesting.
ER doctor Bryce Chapman is used to saving lives — but this time, saving someone has put his own in jeopardy. After a tense rescue in the Bahamas, Bryce becomes the target of a malicious malpractice suit and a shadowy threat that follows him home. Every patient, every decision, every heartbeat could be his last. Redemption is a gripping medical thriller that keeps the suspense high from the very first page. There did seem to be a lot of typos and grammatical errors for a published, non-ARC book.
I don't even know how this ended up on my Kindle but I was trying to get through the KU books I had on there and decided to finally read this one. Writing: The writing itself wasn't terrible. It did however feel like it was written by a frat boy. Like it was written to impress other bros. Characters: I didn't like any of them. The main character gave off kind of cocky, immature bro vibes even though he was supposed to be a middle-aged married surgeon. Story: It started out interesting enough but became more convoluted and not believable. I only finished it because it was very short. Overall: Would not recommend.
Could not get more than a quarter way through. Too much jumping around between circumstances and scenarios makes the story disjointed. Last straw came with a statement by one of the doctors that appeared out of nowhere. No prior mention. It seemed like a whole chapter had been left out. I'm all for not filling a book with waffle or unnecessary padding, but by that point I'd lost what little interest I had had.
On one hand, there were a lot of spelling errors, too many plot lines for the length of book, wild emotions that seemed to come from nowhere, and dialogue that seemed like a teen wrote them because it was so robotic and not how people speak. Im not quite sure this is actually a thriller, either. On the other hand, it was mildly interesting and short enough I just powered through it.
After the first chapter, I almost put the book away unread. It was a real slow starter. Glad I read a little further because, in the end, I really enjoyed it and breezed right through the twists and turns of this novel.
This is the story of an ER doctor whose life comes unglued on a vacation with his wife in the Bahamas. They plan a guided day trip to a remote tourist area and, when they arrive at the boat, the captain informs them they are the only passengers on this trip. Just as they prepare to dock at their destination, they are rammed from behind by another boat with three very inebriated men onboard. And, that is where the downward spiral begins for Dr. Bryce Chapman and his lovely wife, Val.
To get the most from this piece of paradise, one must swim underwater through a tunnel to a cavern. Once there, a confrontation with the three drunkards occurs. The events that follow leave Dr. Chapman to be considered a hero by some, a villain by others upon his return home. From there, things only get worse with multiple problems causing him to become destructive to his marriage and himself. Can he dig himself out from under these soul-killing adversities and find 'redemption' ? Check out the surprise ending the author has in store. It's worth the read.
Something that causes you to think in a different way or from a different perspective
This was written with excellent medical knowledge and convinced me that it reflected a doctor's actions in believable circumstances. Just as important, the doctors and all other characters were believable, interesting and three dimensional in situations that began in interesting routine and developed into excitement and concern that elevated the heart rate and made me wonder what could possibly happen next. This was great drama but then the ending just confounded me and then blew me away! I loved it!
I absolutely loved this book. As a retired ER nurse, this one kept my interest. This storyline was so good! I loved the ending. I would never have guessed who the murderer was. This ER doc and his buddies were fantastic! I wasn’t too pleased with the trauma surgeon but her attitude was typical of one! I have seen some really “know it all trauma surgeons”. Dr. Chapman was the best! He has some great, loyal friends too! Also his wife Val was great. I couldn’t put this book down. Highly recommend reading this book!
This was a really well written novel. Being a paramedic to er nurse to or nurse, this book hit all aspects of my life. I loved the medical thriller behind everything. I felt bad for the MC Bryce. I loved that he was able to dig himself out of the hole that kept getting dug around him. The camaraderie between the ER doctors, just brought me back to my time in the ER and on the boo boo bus. I loved it. The last 1/3 of the book was the gift that just kept giving. I kept wanting more.
When it comes to medical thrillers, I have to say I really, *really* enjoyed this one. There’s so much happening all at once, yet it’s written in a way that makes it easy to follow every twist and turn. Honestly, I could see this story making an absolutely amazing TV series or movie. It has all the drama, suspense, and intensity you’d want on screen!
Dr Bryce has a huge heart and this story of his struggle against malpractice a hidden killer in plain sight and plenty of family drama in the Bahamas ...with a theme of redemption this is a great read
This book is a true page turner from start to finish. The characters are likable, believable, and realistic. Their struggles are relatable. I was not expecting the book to end like it did, and I cannot wait to read the next one.
Kindle Unlimited ebook. I have mixed feelings about this book. I like that the hospital part was more realistic than is often the case. I liked the story but don’t think the writing was very good. That being said I’ll probably continue the series because of the strong medical/hospital theme
As a retired Respiratory Therapist; I enjoy medical inspired books. Thoroughly enjoyed this! Looking forward to reading the next 3 books. Well done fellow island traveler!
This was the first book I have read by Brian Hartman. it was definitely a fast paced , enjoyable book I am glad that John Galt Robinson recommended this author. It is great medical thriller with that blurs moral lines. Highly recommend!
Book one down, three to go. Really enjoyed this medical thriller & looking forward to the next three in the series. New fan of Brian Hartman & plan to make my way through all of his books.
3.75 Stars I enjoyed a medical drama that is realistic. The author has first hand knowledge of the medical world, the ER and trauma. And, I like supporting an author from my home state! I look forward to the next book
