Frayed #1

Frayed Trust

Rate this book
I’m a hidden Omega with murderous impulses…

Can you blame me? With my designation it’s kill or be killed, or worse. Just ask my sister.

After the Sanctuary thrust her into the arms of a monster, I swore I’d never follow in her footsteps. Not when I revealed five years ago, and not now. I’d make it alone. No Sanctuary. No Alphas. No plan.

I didn’t really think it through.

Even if I don’t need an Alpha to take care of me, my body does. And I’m running out of time to find one of my choice. With my heats getting closer to lethal every month and a vampire kingpin who knows my identity, my only hope are the mysterious strangers investigating my long string of murders.

Shan, the bland angel with a penchant for the rules (and making me follow them). Caspian, an incubus-fae hybrid who’s equal parts sensual and vulnerable. Em, the team’s muscle who’s inexplicably absent from the investigation.

Add in my sassy, cursed feline familiar and we have ourselves a party. And the best heat of my life, if I can bring myself to trust them with my secrets. But can I repair my frayed trust before it’s too late?

Frayed Trust is the first book in a reverse harem trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. There is plentiful m/m content throughout, and poly themes! Please make sure you check the trigger warnings.

Freya, an unclaimed Omega with a bad attitude and a cursed familiar, spends her evenings working at a club for supes, while simultaneously murdering the rapey underlings sent to claim her by a vampire mob boss hellbent on possessing her. As if being in hiding and a bit murder-y wasn’t enough, a team of three Alphas are now investigating the murders and their interest in Freya could not only reveal her Omega status but her bloody pastime as well.

It took me a minute to warm up to Freya’s character and the story itself, although I was instantly sucked into the Shan/Caspian/Emmett triangle that’s going on 🥵 . The pacing was also a bit slow in the beginning, but once things pick up I was really into and need book 2 ASAP!

Sure did love it until at 74% she insisted on calling him daddy. That makes me gag. It was an interesting concept, I really wish Lewin hadn't destroyed it for me.

Why do I do this to myself!!!! The next book isn't set to be released until next August 2023.

Ok, so we have an omega witch/nymph hybrid that has seen the worst of alpha's and has been in hiding becoming a murderess to keep herself safe. (Freya). Then comes the team to investigate a series of murdered alpha's like fate is pushing them all together.
** If you are uncomfortable with m/m this book is not for you. The three men have their own relationship with each other before they meet Freya and there are many scenes demonstrating this. **
The book ends on a cliff hanger.

My only biggish complaint is that Freya is a pretty abrasive character. It's hard to believe romantic relationships are building when you have such a closed off MFC.

Ok, one more ... The book never explains how her revelation as an omega went down. When did it happen? Was she already living away from her parents? How did she keep it a secret?? Etc.

Damn. I was not expecting to like this book so much.
I’m really hoping we keep this energy in the rest of the trilogy.
So far I like everything about this and I’d be so disappointed if my interest starts to wane like it usually does with trilogies.

Dude! I freaking loved this book! From what I can tell Olivia Lewin is a newish author and she completely blew it out of the water, it was pure excellence. It had enough intrigue to keep me wondering where the story was going and enough steam to keep my smutty little heart happy. Frayed Trust hit all my keywords, a paranormal omegaverse reverse harem told from multiple perspectives and has dark tones, it's like this book was made for me.

Plus the story had its uniqueness. Yes, it's a reverse harem but it's a poly relationship meaning everybody in the group is together. The story has all kinds of supernaturals but since this is an omegaverse every supernatural has A/B/O designations, examples like an alpha vampire, omega mages, and beta angels, it's all mixed up.

Then add into the fact that there is no perfect mold for these designations, the main character, Freya, is a murderess omega, Shan is a dominant angel, and Caspian is an emotionally fragile incubus hybrid. Freya I loved she is tough and knows how to take care of herself, I wouldn't call her a serial killer I call it self-defense. I like Shan but he is annoying, he plays fast and loose with the rules (he's a supernatural cop) when he wants to, emotionally intelligent but refuses to show his feelings. Last but not least is Caspian "Cas", I love him the best. He's emotionally fragile with anxiety and hasn't had the best of luck. Cas makes my heart ache in the best way possible and I just want to wrap him up and protect him from everything. Two characters worth mentioning, one is Emmett, a team member of Shan's and Cas' who I don't know much about but who is obviously important, and Oswald "Ozzy", Freya's familiar, who is a great friend (talking cat people) and who is also cursed. I can't wait to get to know these two better and especially find out what the heck is up with Ozzy.

I loved every minute of Frayed Trust, piecing information together, waiting to see who will figure out the other's secrets first. Plus it had plenty of sexual tension and firey passion, the push and pull between Freya and Shan was of epic proportions. I love these characters already and am deeply invested in this story which ended on a cliffhanger, just as things were getting really good too. I'm all ready supernatural excited for the next book in the series, I can't wait.

quite nice

The sub-plots really make this book stand out. Secrets layered on secrets with a romance overlying everything. And Oswald? Oh yes, lol

Cute read about an Omega (in hiding) witch who may also be an Alpha killer. She has a hilarious familiar who I have a feeling will become human at some point and I can’t wait to see their interactions then. She works at a bar which isn’t really the brightest thing given she’s trying to stay anonymous and under the radar. She has the cheeriest most unwelcoming disposition yet for some reason it works for her as she’s been a bartender for while. A duo comes snooping for answers on the murders and they know she’s involved but can’t figure out who. While they do play cat and mouse for a bit things don’t take long for them to be steaming up the pages.

Genre and Tropes: paranormal, omegaverse, Why Choose

A quite slow but promising start from this new author! A paranormal Why Choose with plenty of MM action.

Intriguing world building, with demons, fae, angels, witches and "nulls" (normal humans) - and make it omegaverse! Our fmc Freya is an Omega witch, but has been in hiding from alphas for years. Her heats are getting more frequent and more dangerous, but all the alphas who find out her secret are either trying to kidnap or force her, so her hand is forced to take some drastic measures of the serial unaliving kind. 🗡

It's so fun and refreshing to have an Omega who definitely takes absolutely no shit, deals with danger head on and isn't a simpering soft damsel in distress. I wasn't instantly loving Freya, but she really grew on me as a fmc.

The guys are interesting as well. Three guys who work together for some sort of supernatural FBI as semi-undercover agents, tasked with finding the serial unaliver. One of them is out of action for most of the book, but we get to know the two other ones (quite intimately actually, there's some sword play). We have the typical macho Daddy type in Shan, and the human cinnamon roll in Caspian. I absolutely adore Caspian.

Freya also has an orange tabby Familiar, who apparently is a cursed demon of some sort and also talks dirty to her whilst she has her heats. I am very interested in finding out more about him and if he maybe turns into a more manly form at some point. 🤔 because a cat who talks dirty is, whilst a fun thought, maybe just not my jam as is.

Whilst this book is quite slow in buildup both for characters, plot and steam, I still really enjoyed it. Great debut and I'll definitely pick up the next book in the series!.

Almost lost me there at the beginning having her cat familiar talk her through it. Oh yes. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Her pet cat. An apparent Dom, and later, a voyeur. Much to consider.

There was also a lot of energy put into editing sentences in my head so they flowed better as I read, as well as entire chapters that were skippable with unnecessary amounts of MM. It could’ve just been implied as it added nothing to the story otherwise.

It’s an interesting premise. I love me a fmc that doesn’t shy away from violence & fighting back. So, I think I still might be optimistic/masochistic enough to try the next book in the series.

Edit: DNF book 2. Just could not find it in me to care whether they live or die.

I believe this is the first RH book that Olivia Lewin has written and I have to say that I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series and any future books she releases. Frayed Trust was an instant, read in one sitting type of book. I've read a few books recently with out of the norm omega characters and let me tell you, I am here for an independent, strong omega. The fact that this is a supernatural inhabited world and the fmc, Freya, is a witch as well adds to her capabilities. I like that even though her designation is omega and she's supposed to be considered weak and unassuming, she still has additional powers to back her up when she might not be able to compete with someone physically. Although, she's pretty great at that too. Freya is a walking contradiction. Unlike many other omegas who are able to be preyed on easily, Freya doesn't look at the world with rose colored glasses, hoping for an alpha to come sweep her away with false promises. She has a past that warrants her lack of trust and her hesitancy of giving that piece of herself away (or having it taken away). It's amazing to see how long she has lasted being her own white knight with her noble familiar at her side.

The plot line of this book is a brilliant one too! I love that the story is well balanced between romance/relationships as well as the action that moved the story forward. Essentially a murder mystery where the reader is completely in the know watching the other characters try to solve the puzzle, it was very entertaining to see the main two guys involved, Shan and Caspian, be completely clueless about the entire situation, asking questions and sometimes getting close to the actual truth when new information comes up, yet still being way off from the final answers. It sort of gave me Dexter vibes since Freya was completely surrounded by the ongoing investigation, an active participant and even involved with the guys, yet never a complete suspect. Because who would assume an omega to be be so clinical, organized, or brutal when it comes to murder?

The three (four?) guys in this book are all pretty likeable. Shan comes off as cold and unemotional in the way he interacts with Freya, but when you see the chapters with his POVs you get to see a completely different side to him, one that is easier to like and understand. Caspian is like a golden retriever character, impossible to hate or get mad at and always needing affection or affirmation. He's a sweetheart that hasn't been treated well in his life and always expects to be let down in some way. Emmett doesn't get a lot of page time in this book, although he does get a couple of chapters for himself. However, it's easy to tell he's going to be an important part of this group, especially with how impactful the cliffhanger was. As for Oswald, I'm not sure if he counts as one of the guys…yet. A familiar for now, but I don't think he will stay that way for long. He's got main character vibes and too much chemistry with Freya to just stay a cat for the whole series. I think breaking his curse will be on the agenda soon enough.

I can't wait to see what happens with Freya and the vampire mafia in the next book in this series. I'm half expecting them to be just as unsuspecting of Freya as everyone else! They'll be in for a big surprise.

This is a series review. It contains minor spoilers.

Everything was fine. Perfectly fine until book 3, when it all came crashing down. I have never been so frustrated at a set of characters in my entire life. The ONLY characters worth a grain of salt were Caspian and Em, because they're more or less centered around Freya.

Nolan and Ozzy can suck a cock. Oh wait, they do. As soon as they become bonded, Ozzy basically just throws any sort of loyalty he had to Freya out the window and makes it abundantly clear. I was hurt on her behalf. Rather than being hurt by that, Freya just lowkey ignores it. I get it, you're thinking "Oh, that just means she values herself over them."

You're wrong. It doesn't come across that way. Instead, it comes across as arrogant and egotistical of her.

Nolan is a different breed all on his own. He essentially leads Freya on, but CONSTANTLY rejects her to the point that I became stabby at Freya's lack of feelings over it. I wanted her to fight him, to EXPLAIN her feelings to him, explain what the rejection was doing to her. Instead, she came across as really fucking obnoxious--constantly trying to win him over. It became painful to watch her make a fool of herself.

Do any of these characters talk about feelings? Of fucking course not, because how absolute dare.

Shan is just...I don't know. I felt no connection to him. The entire group felt disconnected to me. The fact that Em mates Freya while she's dying and she just comes up for air like, "Oh, this is what I've always wanted!" rubbed me the wrong way. Throughout most of the series, she's steadfast that she doesn't want to be beholden to any Alpha, but immediately accepts it as soon as it's forced upon her? No thanks.

I just...le sigh. I'm not really a written review person, but I huffed and puffed over my frustrations about this series for a solid 2 days after reading it. I just couldn't take it anymore. Obviously, read at your own risk. Again, the series was great up until book 3. If you're into constant miscommunication, obnoxiously oblivious FMCs, and men who are trash, this series is great for you.

I adored this book.

It was not at all what I was expecting but I also kind of went into this without really knowing what I was about to read. I loved the development of the relationships between all of the characters. I am a huge fan of why choose novels where the male characters also have relationships with each other beyond their relationship with the female lead. I think it adds so much depth and complexity to the pack and this book did it so well. There were a lot of times I was almost more interested in their relationships with each other than with the FMC because they were just so precious.

Normally I am not into instant attraction/feelings but gosh darn it Caspian had me melting in a puddle with how sweet and needy he was. Like prime golden retriever boyfriend energy. I am obsessed. He was just a sweet little tough murdering jelly bean.

I really enjoyed Freya as a character as well (probably should mention her since she is the lead... but like come on Caspian).

She is tough for a good reason and I loved that she really is actively trying to take and keep control of her own life. She is tough and quick on her feet when in a bind. I am excited to see more of her strength in the coming books. It is fun to read about a FMC who is confident in who they are and enforcing those boundaries.

Shan and Em the jury is out on. Shan had good reason to act the way he did but it also was heckin annoying and Em we just did not really get to know.

BUT ALSO OSWALD!!!! I love that little not cat cat haha. I am so excited for when his story line moves along because I adored the way he looks out for Freya but also is willing to call her out on some of her behaviors.

Overall, super excited for the next book.

This was a super quick read and ends in a cliffhanger.

Freya is 24 and secretly an Omega but hides under suppresants and blockers to pass as a Beta. She's working as a bartender when she meets the other 3 MMCs: Caspian, Shan, and Emmett.

Freya is part witch and part nymph, but only displays her witch powers. Caspian is an incubus, Shan is an angel, and Emmett is a shifter, and all three are part of an investigative team into the murders of Alphas in the city Freya is staying in. There is on-page MM scenes between Caspian and Shan, and implied MM scenes between Caspian and Emmett, while there is only brotherhood between Shan and Emmett (maybe? for now? or not? *shrugs).

Freya also has an orange tabby cat as a familiar, named Oswald or Ozzy that was cursed into that form. They can communicate telepathically with each other.

Even though it's 285 pages, it seemed super short. A lot of the book is just everyone dancing around each other and keeping secrets, so I'm anticipating book 2 and for more progress for the plot and for Freya to form her harem.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review. All opinions are my own and not influenced by the author.

This is my honest review after receiving an ARC of Frayed Trust from the author. I’m rating it at a 3.5.

This book was a super quick read that ends in a cliffhanger. The FMC, Freya, is a kickass witch keeping life-threatening secrets— she’s an Omega, most importantly. Lots of action, bar scenes, and sexual tension ensue.

This book was a lot of exposition for upcoming ones in the series, and sets up a pretty cool world. I loved all of what I presume will be love interests— Caspian was my favorite, and I’m looking forward to see where the author takes Oswald, Freya’s feline familiar. I also adored the relationship between Caspian and Shan, and desperately want more of what’s being set up between Cas and Emmett. The scenes without Freya were my favorite, which brings me to my only issue with this book: Freya herself. I didn’t connect with her at all and found her hard to empathize with her actions and choices, which made it hard to like her at all. She’s at her best in her scenes with Caspian, especially on their first date.

All in all, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!

I was extremely surprised by this book and in the best way possible! It was a pretty quick but really enjoyable read.
It had the perfect amount of plot and steam to be well balanced. The characters were well written especially the male ones. I really like how different they were from each other and how their designations were incorporated (or not) into their personalities. I’m curious to see how they will evolve throughout the rest of these books.
The universe in which the story happens is typically the kind of universe that I love. It involves a bit of world building which means that the beginning of the book was a bit slow but it’s something necessary in my opinion. Once the action picked up a bit I felt really engrossed into the story and couldn’t stop reading.
I’m really looking forward to the next book, especially as this one ended on a cliffhanger.

TW: As mentioned at the beginning of the book there are triggering subjects in this book so please be careful if you have TW ❤️

3 - Not Reverse Harem - Stars

I probably would have liked this book with a little tweaking of the characters. To start off, this is absolutely not a reverse harem. If anything this story will be poly, but at this point this book is primarily MM. There are at least ten male only sex scenes. Maybe one or two spicy scenes with FMC involved.

Cas, the incubus, is 100% the center of the relationship. There is no way that’s going to change in the future either. Cas acts more like an Omega than FMC does. He wines and needs cuddles like an omega. FMC is even sexually dominant with him. I don’t like it. He acts like a horny omega and is treated like one.

I do like FMC, mostly. I like her powers and how she is tough enough to take care of herself. But I hate how she is so mean and bitchy to everyone all the time. It’s too much.

See my notes and nightlight for triggers and kinks and stuff

ARC read, honest review here...
I give this book 3.5 ⭐️
This is only because I found it difficult to get into. I loved Freya's familiar Oswald and how sweet Caspian is, but Freya's rude attitude was grating and over the top. I get the whole trying to keep people at a distance cause you're hiding some MAJOR secrets, but it was overdone.

Freya is an omega moonlighting as a beta.... but a scary Vampire Alpha is hot on her trail and sending lackies to procure her for his sadistic pleasure.... but Freya is proving to be much more difficult to bring in, unaliving all those that have been sent for her! All these deaths have garnered the attention of the supernatural "police force" and a special team is dispatched to try and bring the perpetrator to justice... but their arrival brings more complications for Freya... could these be just the Alphas that she's been searching for? Battling her growing attraction to them, the fact that they are literally here trying to solve the crimes she's responsible for, staying one foot ahead of the scary vamp that wants to make her his, and the growing fear her next heat will be the one to literally kill her, Freya has her hands full!

The last 1/3 of the book is where it all picked up for me and I was very drawn in and couldn't put it down. I'm certainly happy I kept reading. I will definitely keep reading this series, I need to know what will happen with Freya and her 3 "special forces" investigators... not to mention I'm DYING for whatever curse was put on Oswald to be reversed and him turning into a 4th super smoke show love interest for Freya ❤️

Oh my gosh!!
So lately I’ve been in a bit of a slump while waiting for my TBR books to come out.
Well let me tell you! This book is amazing!!
We have a sarcastic and kickass heroine, and 2 love interests. Technically three maybe, but really it’s only the one at first. She hates the Other. The amount of sexual tension!! Talk about hot!
You can see and feel how the MFC is the way she is. Don’t blame her a bit.
Suspense. Mystery. Romance. It was a bit fast paced but it works. It also looks like there might be other books that feature different characters in the same world.

These characters are amazing and so well rounded. I didn’t even realize I was at the end of the book until it was done and I had a small tantrum!
That cliff hanger! I’m not waiting patiently for the next one. I can tell you that.

Freya is determined to stay out of his hand by any means necessary.. even if that means she has to unalives whoever is sent to collect her…

Shan & cas start to investigate what’s happening along with another member of other their team Emmett are trying to find out who’s behind the unlived/missing alphas.. and shan & cas quickly become intrigued by Freya.. Emmett is working behind the scenes for most of the book..

this book has also left me with many questions…

great start to series

This series is starting out great. Freya is a witch/nymph who finds out her designation was not what she wants it to be, having seen what her sister had to go through. So for the last 5 years she has hidden and fought it with all she has.

Shan, Cas, and Em are just 3 investigators that want to find a killer of other paranormal and once meeting Freya, they learn about her, but still don’t have all the answers.

Parts have dark elements, but the banter is interesting, the interactions between the characters are good. This one ends in a cliffhanger, and we find out for sure what I suspected basically the whole time relating to one character. Read on with me and let’s see if Freya can learn to trust the boys.

Faith, trust… vampire dust? A story deserving of the binge reading I did within the last twenty four hours, you will not regret picking up this book. Sadly ends on a cliffhanger, and I wanna throw my tablet so much, but that gets expensive fast. So here I am, stewing in angst, and wondering what happens next. Will the guys be there in time? Will the heroine save herself? Will the curse be lifted? And just how many mates will she end up with? Will they survive the next book? Too many questions, meaning it is an epic intro to what will be an amazing series. Now to just wait for the next book. Patience, I have not.

Okay I freaking loved this book!

I was so lucky to have been given an ARC of this book and let me tell you I am buying the physical copy, 1 because look at that cover and 2 I am never going to not want to re-read this book.

Freya is a bad-ass rune casting Omega witch with a takes no shit attitude. She catches the attention of 3 guys who happen to be an angel, incubus and shifter (perfect RH am I right) who are suspicious of her dark deeds.

This book literally has all of the fantasy, spice and plot twists you can ever need and I for one cannot wait for the second book.

Thank you Olivia Lewin for a magical read ✨♥️

What a loveable kick ass FMC. I really enjoyed this book and found myself loving Freya’s attitude which she uses as a defence to keep people from discovering her secret.

I also found myself falling for Cas, Shan, Emmet and I have a theory brewing about Oswald’s curse. The characters were very loveable and I enjoyed seeing their different personalities as they were revealed. Personally Cas was a bit too soft for me as I adore a good alphahole but he still my managed to win me over.

That cliffhanger has my desperate for the next read, I just dread the wait till it’s released. Why do I always pick u finished series? 🤦‍♀️

Enjoyable book

I really enjoyed this book. It had multiple povs. Perfectly balanced between the pov the was needed when reading what was going on in the book. I really felt for the fmc when losing her sister. That feeling she had when she spoke to her last…. Is a familiar one. There was a few dry spells where it was just talking and not much action. There was a ton of MM action, and truly only 1 scene with the fmc. I’m not really into the mm scenes but others might be. I hope she gets some closure about her sister, and dang I hope those guys turn out to be the fmc’s knights in shining armour. She definitely needs it after that ending. Can’t wait for the next book!

DNF 33%

If you're not into heavy MM action then steer clear of this one.

I usually don't mind a bit, but in this particular case I found it really off-putting. It's just hard for me to get into an RH when there's already a very clearly established relationship going on her and I found that I didn't particularly care to read more about it.

On the other hand, the actual plot of the story (though very limited at 30% since it's mostly been about sex) was super intriguing.

If I'm ever feeling more tolerant I will definately revisit to find out what happens to this bad ass heroine vigilante..

First time reading a book from this author and dam I ain’t even thru chapter 1 and I am in love with the book. The FMC is extremely sassy and has me already laughing. I also love Freya’s Familiar Oswald. This book is done in MPOVs which just adds to the book. I wasn’t able to put this book down from beginning till end. There is so much I want to say about this book but can’t because it will give far to much away. Dam that cliffhanger has me just wanting to devour book 2 now. can’t wait to read more of this series!!

This book had me addicted from page 1. The fmc is the definition of a baddy. The MMCs were hot and sexy and sooo dirty talking. The fmc is an omega who has been going through her heat alone. She refuses to find an alpha because of what happened to her sister in the past. She goes through her heat alone while also being hunted because someone found out she is a secret unclaimed omega. This book has MM and normally I don’t like it but it was done well in this book and it was hot.

An angel and an incubus walked into a bar.... 😏
This was an all-in-one-binge for me. Freya is dark, broken, strong, a victim of her own biology and a bit murderous and I love it all! The book starts with a murder and an awesome familiar and it's all action from there with plenty of steamy stuff in between the murders. The cliffy made me want to throw my kindle a bit and I can't wait for the next one. 😍 If you love kicka$$ women and sizzling hot men and a crap ton of action and snark, you NEED to read this book!

Umm wow! Olivia really knocked it out of the park with this one. Freya is a strong willed murderous witch/nymph that is hiding the fact she’s an Omega. From the start you can tell she has that personality that literally nothing and no one will stop her once she sets her mind to something. Shan and Cas are polar opposite but their bond is so well balanced that it fits the dynamic perfectly, add in Freya later and hopefully Em and they will be unstoppable!
I’m truly amazed at Olivia’s debut series and can’t wait for 2023 to read the next one!
