In a recent visit to Chicago in August, I managed to check out Malliway Bros Witchcraft and Magic at 1407 W Morse Ave in the Rogers Park neighborhood of the city. In addition to offering an outstanding metaphysical store and community space, Blake and Wycke Malliway are also founders of Crossed Crow Books, which releases publications on various magical practices. I came upon A Spirit Work Primer: a Beginner’s Guide to Streamlined Spirit Work by Naag Loki Shivanath displayed in the store. As I’d already loaded up my suitcase to stay just under the weight limit for my flight back to Belgium, I was hesitant to buy anything that wasn’t on my list.

I have long been interested in spirit work, and have been looking into how to further develop this skill. I find it one of the more complex forms of magical working, and have had a hard time finding approachable material on the subject. Seeing as it had the words “primer” and “beginner” in it, I felt that this was the time to make an impulse buy.

Author Naag Loki Shivanath has been working in the study and practice of the occult for over two decades. After exploring various paths such as Wicca, Druidry and Asatru, Shivanath found his calling in spirit work and necromancy. A Spirit Work Primer is for everyone from absolute beginners all the way to experienced spirit workers who seek to further develop psychic senses, spirit work practices and spirit invocation.

Shivanath’s goal of A Spirit Work Primer is to share what he has compiled from his research and practice of spirit work over the years. He makes it clear that it’s not meant to be the one and only text on the subject, and that what he presents is a bare bones approach to this magical practice as well as some ways he has found it to work.

This book is my go-to recommendation for those who want to create a foundation to build upon when it comes to working with spirits. The author touches upon concepts that may be overthought and overlooked by the novice while making sure to emphasize the importance of not crossing cultural lines when one shouldn't. It provides a good framework for invocations, evocations, forming spirit pacts, offerings, and the list goes on and on. There was one issue I had with the book. The issue in question is when the author wrote about different ways to banish and protect the practitioner from spirits. One of those banishings was the LBRP (Lesser Banishing Ritual of The Pentagram), a ritual from the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn. The problem here is that the author only gave it to the reader as a method of banishing spirits. Those who follow the Golden Dawn tradition or any path similar, know that rituals like the LBRP are not only for banishing spirits and it's not its main purpose. The author doesn't give many nuances to the banishing ritual, but besides that, the rest of the book is still great.

Good manual

A very practical book on spirit work. Like it a lot. Deserves a second part on advanced tecniques named but not explained here. "If you are advanced don't need orientation on this topic" is a lie ;-)

muy pocos libros sobre este tema están escritos con tanta claridad, originalidad, y ante todo la propia experiencia del auto. no está escrito desde un teórico, sino desde un verdadero practicante. Un verdadero aporte al ocultismo moderno.

Goodreads' 5 star system doesn't seem specific enough to do this book justice. If I could, I would give it more of a 7 out of 10.

The Spirit Work Primer is a good book - for its intended target audience of those that dabble more with ceremonial magic. Once you are not in this group, you quickly see that it is less a general primer for spirit work and more of a concise summary of how a more ritualistic working magic-user would approach the topic.

If you are a folk witch, I would recommend Folk Witchcraft: A Guide to Lore, Land, & the Familiar Spirit for the Solitary Practitioner over this one, as it explains in more details how to meet spirits in spirit flight and how to build meaningful relationships.

a good book to start you on spirit work, just as you would expect from the title. it doesn't go into specifics of working with individual spirits or even types of spirits, as that's not the intent, but gives a great overview of rites, invocations and evocations, protections and banishings, and all the other foundations one needs to start on spirit work.
