I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you. My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it. If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way
Instead of a book about people doing really good things we have a book about people failing. Watergate is a prime example. It cost Nixon the presidency. There's also the United States Football Team and a video game based on the movie ET.
Corrupt politicians isn't anything new, of course. They almost never seem to caught. Myspace is noted along with a World Series Fix. The Great Chicago Fire is covered, noting the lack of proper preparation for a major fire.
Bank failures is covered and we are still seeing those happen just recently. There are political parties that failed and the government's response to Hurricane Katrina is covered.
Some of the failures are funny, some are extremely serious. Either way it's an interesting book and basically a commentary (unintended, probably) about how little bad things change over time.
This clearly makes the point that all in the world isn’t perfect. I enjoyed the book. Some of the topics I knew about and others were a surprise for sure. This could actually be a series.
O'Neill does it again. He takes a look at human, mostly, foibles with his tongue firmly pressed in his cheek. His books are great entertainment and education too.
These stories of the failures in American History were fun to read about. Now I will say that some of them were familiar to me and possibly others, who read this book. However they were worth reading about again. I really like the way the stories were laid out. This made for an enjoyable reading of them. Now the stories don't follow a chronological order, but that was okay with me while other may like a chronological approach to the stories. They still were interesting to me. I know that there were a couple or so typos in this book, but they were so far between that I don't remember them that much. If you like trivia about American History and like to read about the goofs that travel in the shadows of it then this book will be worth reading.
