“Condemned” is the 4th book in ‘The Watch’, an interconnected series of romantic suspense novels by author Finley Brown. The story is written so you can enjoy it and understand everything if you mean it as a standalone. However, I do think you’ll get more out of it and enjoy it on a deeper level if you’ve read other books in the series. The Watch is so shrouded in secrecy that only three people outside the organization itself know of its existence. It’s singular mission is to bring to justice the evil people in the world who would otherwise get away with their misdeeds because of their power and wealth.

When the leader of The Watch, Sir Alexander, is charged in a high-profile murder case, a call to their trusted lawyer is answered by the man’s estranged daughter Skye. She is also a lawyer, and inherited half of the law firm from her recently deceased father. The story that follows is full of secrets, lies, mistaken beliefs, and assorted intrigues. Skye and Storm, one of the operatives of The Watch, are strongly attracted to one another, and that connection continues to develop throughout the story. More about multiple key players in the book is revealed as the story progresses. I thought all the things Skye learns about her father were particularly interesting and impactful.

The book starts off with tension and then continually builds and expands upon it. Humorous moments and passionate scenes occasionally break up that tension. I thought some of the highlighted differences between the Scottish and the American justice systems were interesting. I liked both main characters, although I would have preferred to see more of them together and their developing relationship further explored. The secondary characters are varied and engaging. I’m curious to see where the series goes next.

This is Book 4 in “The Watch” series but it is also a wonderful read as a stand-alone story. I can attest to that because I haven’t ready any of the first three but really enjoyed reading this book. The leader of The Watch, Sir Alexander MacKay, has been charged with first degree murder and is in need of his lawyer. Unfortunately the lawyer has passed away and the call is answered by his daughter (Skye) who has replaced him as partner in the law firm. Thus starts a story that has a few plot lines that appear to be parallel but do intersect in most interesting ways. The main storyline is itself a first class crime mystery with many a twist and turn. There is also a budding relationship between Skye and one of her “guards” (Storm) that features a bit of a spanking and a touch of energetic sex. The real action takes place leading up to the trial and then the trial itself. Throughout the story the men of The Watch keep telling Skye her dad would have been proud of her, but the courtroom drama would have made even Perry Mason proud. A worthy read that you will find very hard to put down. 4 Stars

This is book four of the Watch series. You don't need to read the first three books, but it will help you follow the storyline easier. Skye has been a rebel all her life. When her father dies and leaves her his half of a partnership, she decides to take it only to find out that her father's partner has taken all of his clients. When Skye gets a phone call meant for her father to help a client, she takes it. That is the start of the mystery of who actually killed Flynn.

This is a fun story that has a lot of storylines going on at the same time. I enjoyed the look into courtrooms in Scotland. I'm looking forward to the next book.
