Hatched: Dragon Defender

“Don’t trust anyone.”

Prax’s warning to Charl when she leaves for Sorcester sticks in her mind like a flock of sugar sprites swarming a beehive.

Soon she finds herself in the glittering world of the noble elite, where vanity enchantments and grandeur spells threaten to untether her from the simple life she’s always known. Here, her family legacy means nothing. Instead, mustering support to fight the criminal charges against her gets her labeled as a radical.

Even her companions can’t be counted on as mounting tension between Slip and Captain Wynne threatens to fracture their partnership, leaving Charl caught in the middle. Unsure who to trust, Charl begins to suspect that something more sinister is at work in the city. When a hired assassin breaks into her room, it’s clear that the impending trial date isn’t her biggest threat.

Someone doesn’t want her to live long enough to see it.

Great Storytelling

I thought this was a really well written book that had some great storytelling in it. The characters are very believable, and the dragons magical. And it's always great to follow the adventures of a strong female protagonist. It's best to read book 1 first so you get the full story.

lies

How do you protect yourself and your friend when knowing who to trust is woven in lies? Dragons that mind speak, hunters, conspiring men and adventure await this band and I feel another sequel coming!

💭 This book picks up where book one left off, with Charl being escorted by a dragon hunter and an enforcer to stand trial before the king for illegal dragon breeding. We meet Charl’s family, noble- men and -women who live a life of luxury and frivolity. Charl faces betrayal and secrets and fear of the future as she navigates the new reality she’s been thrust into.

💭 This book was fast paced and exciting - I love how Charl doesn’t allow herself to be intimidated by folks who think they’re better than her, despite the fact that they are royalty and she is seen as lowly because she is a farmer. She *feels* fear and intimidation, but she holds true to what she believes in and doesn’t allow herself to be shamed for who she is. I like that she keeps a level head when events are firestorming around her and she is in constant danger.

I’ve already begun reading book 3 and the adventure has kicked off in high gear!

The farmer takes a dragon - to court

Dragon Defender continues straight on from Dragon Farmer as Dragon and Farmer are taken to the capital to face trial, imprisonment and perhaps death. Indeed, it is not just Charl that is on trial, but all of dragonkind – or perhaps all of humankind.

Appealing to the King as the highest court, she is released to her family, and starts to learn what it is to be nobility. She finds less support than she'd hoped, is not sure she can trust those who claim to be her friends, and finds support from unexpected places - and enemies in unexpected places.

While the story could be read standalone, it does contain spoilers for most of the key points of book 1, and so it is recommended to read the series in order. And yes, Hatched is proving to be a solid fantasy saga for those who like their fantasy embedded in relationships and family drama, with dragons and other magical beings thrown into the mix. It is appropriate for young adults from middle grade up. I will be moving right along to the final instalment.

The second book in the series, I can only say it is not worth the read. The first book had a very interesting premise, and it’s simply lost all of its momentum. The first several chapters were just a lot of words that did absolutely nothing to advance the storyline, and it wasn’t helped by the characters becoming whiny, mean or just plain unlikable. Such a shame. I wish I could say this is the first series I’ve ever started reading and ended up severely disappointed in, but it’s not. Needless to say, I am not going to read the third book.

This is a really fun series by an author I'm excited to have discovered. It has mystery, romance, adventure, and...dragons! This installment answered a few of the questions from the first book, but introduced new mysteries that I'm sure will be answered in the final book. I can't wait to see what happens to Prax and Charl, Wynne and Slip, Kierrick, Gragyn, Forest, and if they find the missing men. Great fun, and many thanks to Caren Hahn for this series from a giveaway!

This is the second book in the Hatched series by Caren Hahn. For starters, if I don’t enjoy the first book in a series, I’ll generally skip the sequels. This was a sequel I refused to miss! The story takes Charl and company to the main city to defend Charl’s case in court. Without leaving spoilers, I will say there were a lot of surprises. Just when I thought I had things figured out, a twist in the plot would jump out. Had me guessing and reading way too late into the night. Now on to book 3….

Another Enchanting Story

Dragons and Trolls, spells and more. What more does a story need? Maybe some bad guys and a hero! Caren Hahn really makes you believe this has happened! A wonderful second book!

The story grows

Prax and Charl continue on their adventure. Who is trying to attack the dragons and breeders. How.will her trial go, will the king find her guilty? Such a great story. It is clean with a hint of same attraction.

A unique world. Love that you can't always tell whose side the characters are on. Rich, engaging plot.
