Alice Humphries is a small-town Jersey lawyer, and she knows what she’s doing. Kind of. And hell—even if she doesn’t, she and her best friend Don can normally figure it out. They are recent law school grads who’ve opened up their own practice, and they’ll take just about any case they can get to keep the electricity on and buy donuts on Fridays. But when they’re assigned to a high-profile murder through the Public Defender’s Office, they find themselves in over their heads.

The a well-known divorce attorney found shot to death in his office. Their his blond, botoxed, and bitchy wife. Alice and Don have to get her out of jail, keep her out of jail, and figure out what the hell they’re doing in the process. And meanwhile, they still have two other clients to contend a 23 year-old hot-blooded drama queen who pelts her on-again-off-again older lover with snowballs and erects giant snow penises on the hood of his car, and a brash-mouthed Texas pageant mom who assaults a fellow contestant with a giant cupcake and stuffs her four-year old’s bra for the win. And then there’s sexy Assistant Prosecutor/enemy of the defense, Jake Harris. Alice can’t figure out whether she wants to strangle him or make out with him, but the feeling is definitely mutual.

Seriously, Murder? is the first installment in a laugh-out-loud romcom murder mystery series that will keep you wanting more! Don and Alice are at the heart of this story, and they just might save the day (if they don't kill each other, first).

I certainly wasn't expecting all the ruckus and hoopla this one entailed. Non-stop crazy fun that legal beagles will love! Fast moving from start to finish with a cast of characters who'll keep you laughing out loud. New-to-me-author that I'll continue to follow in the Don and Alice mystery series.

It's like Grisham with a sense of humor and a lot more flair.

The dynamic between the female main character Alice, and her co-worker/sidekick Don, is full of hilarious and brutally honest banter. I found myself wishing I had a friend like Don. It would make life a hell of a lot more interesting and fun. Their relationship held the perfect amount of sexual tension overridden by a deep friendship.

But don't worry, there is some serious sexual tension between Alice and fellow lawyer Jake. Enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and wanting more.

The author created a cast of lively, colorful, and morally grey side characters that kept the plot moving and me laughing. My favorite was snow penis happy Bianca who I hope makes a re-appearance in book 2.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes romcoms, books about lawyers, and general women's fiction.

I think an alternate title for this 5 ⭐️book could be The Crazy Adventures of Don and Alice. This was such a hilarious, laugh out loud, smart, and witty first novel for this extremely talented new author. Individually, and together, Don and Alice are a hot mess. Partners in their own law firm, they have been getting by, but when a high profile murder case tumbles into their laps, they do everything they can to secure a seemingly impossible win for their less than cooperative client. Monica Hoopes’ writing style is brilliant. The storytelling is carefully crafted and the smooth addition of subplots and ancillary characters makes this an exciting who dun it! An unexpected ending, but a few doors left open, so I’m hoping for a Book 2 very soon!

I didn’t like Don, so that made it hard to enjoy the book, though Alice was a little better. All the testosterone and almost all of the other women being portrayed as bimbos also wasn’t to my tastes. It felt dated, like something from the ‘80s that you watch again now and cringe.

Obviously others have really enjoyed it and it was just entertaining enough to keep me going, but I don’t think I’ll stick around for more. Just not my cup of tea.

I received a free copy through Voracious Readers Only and the opinion is all mine.

A small, struggling law firm, Humphries & Agnelli, is tagged to be pool lawyers representing a high profile murder case that they can be sure to lose. When they aren't strategizing on how they can defend Belinda Bailey, who is accused of murdering her husband, they deal with other small profile, low paying cases. This book is so interesting and easy to read; I thoroughly enjoyed it. Readers should be warned, however, that although there is no steamy sex or gory violence, the book is loaded with crude humor, and a liberal sprinkling of the "F-Bomb." Expect Gay clubs, assault with food and flowers, and suggestive ice sculptures as Allie and Don defend the strangest cases you'll ever read. So if you are not easily offended, I would recommend this book as a refreshing diversion from your usual book list. I received this book as an Advance Readers Copy from Voracious Readers Only.

There are a ton of murder mystery books from an officers point a view, a killers point of view, or even a victims point of view… “Seriously, Murder?” gave us a point of view from the lawyers handling the case… and I was HERE FOR IT.

I loved everything about this book. I loved the process of court being laid out, I loved the mystery, I loved Don and Alice’s relationship. Also, the fact that my favorite movie “My Cousin Vinny” was referenced was icing on the cake.

I am READY for the next book!

Oh man. So many issues, but basically, it was simultaneously: boring with the law aspects and descriptions of the outfits; irritating as all heck with the lack of punctuation and Don constantly calling her "Sweetheart" at every turn, while every other sentence was "frickin" this and f-ing that; weird descriptions of all of the women and their "boobs" and the sexist way they were described felt kind of "male author" to me; confusing with all of the different cases going on (and also boring with those!); oddly anachronistic with the TV and celebrity references; wayyyy too rushed of an ending; and literally all of the characters bothered me. I wish I had liked it! Alas.

Listen up, Babes!!! I just found out about this book yesterday evening ! And I’ve already devoured it!!! Let me tell you, this is one of the most hilariously funny books that I have ever read! The whit and sarcastic bantering back and forth between the 2 MC’s is ePiC! It reminds me of my husband and I! And another character, Crystal Lee, is maybe one of the funniest characters Ever in a book. Great character development. Lots of fun humor and whit, a little romance and a big murder mystery case! Highly recommend getting this one!! Such a fun & fast read. And the author just released this book, I believe less than 3 weeks ago!! 5/5⭐️

I need another Don and Alice book! When I think of funny, crime based novels I usually turn to the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich… and now I’d like to add Monica Hoopes and her Don and Alice mystery book!
Great character development that made me feel like I was actually watching a tv series play out, and a great twist in the end that I didn’t see coming. There’s also a nice little tease at the end making the readers want more!

I think Hoopes is a good writer, and can make you see the story unfold, which is an all-important point for me, in whether I'll even finish a book. I gave this book only a three, which means I liked it, but it was not one of my favorites. Not necessarily because the story was bad, but because of my tastes, I think. Don always calling the main female character "sweetheart" began making me dislike his character immensely, and I can't imagine someone wanting to work with him. For me to like a book, I have to like the main characters, and I couldn't like him. The female lead, who is also the narrator, was more likeable. I did think the scenes at the beauty pageant were funny, and there was an interesting ending with a little excitement. I might try her books again, but only with different characters.

I read this book when it came out at the beginning of August. The cover drew my attention, and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down! The characters were awesome; the banter between Alice and Don was non stop! The way the author incorporated multiple plots was perfect! If you are looking for a feel great book with lots of smiles, this one is for you!

I went into Seriously, Murder? hoping for an engaging legal mystery, but I quickly found that this book just wasn’t for me. The main character, Alice, was not particularly likable, and her partner, Don, came off as an arrogant jerk throughout most of the story. Their dynamic, instead of being witty or compelling, often felt frustrating.

The plot follows Alice and Don as they take on a high-profile murder case, defending a woman named Belinda. Along the way, they juggle side cases, personal drama, and a tangled mess of secrets, affairs, and shady characters. The pacing was decent, and there were plenty of developments, but the story felt like it meandered at times with too many subplots competing for attention.

One of the bigger issues was that Alice and Don didn’t seem very competent as lawyers. They fumbled through their investigation, struggled in court, and were often just guessing their way forward. While that could be played for humor, it didn't feel intentional—it just made them seem unprepared and out of their depth.

The murder mystery itself had potential, but the way it unfolded didn’t grip me. By the time the final confrontation happened, with Alice literally fighting or running for her life, I wasn’t all that invested. The resolution was rushed, and everything was wrapped up through a hospital-room exposition dump, which wasn’t the most satisfying way to conclude a mystery.

I won’t be continuing the series. If you enjoy legal mysteries with messy cases and personal drama, you might find something to like here. But for me, Seriously, Murder? didn’t quite hit the mark.

I was grimacing most of the way through this one.

1- Counties in NJ did not need to be made up. That was a stupid choice.

2- As a Jersey girl born and bred...Don's language and behavior is so over the top, it's not believable....mostly it's annoying.

Definitely not reading any others in this series. Ugh.

I’m not sure if I’m being generous with two stars, but it did have a few chuckle out loud moments, so for that I gave it two instead of one. I wanted to like this book so much. And I tried to. I really did. Saw it through to the end, even when I wondered why (which was often). I thought it was going to be a Stephanie Plumb type book with lawyers instead of bounty hunters. But the description was far better than the book. In fact you can really just read that and the last chapter to find out who did it and you’ll be good.
Alice and Don are the two main characters. Best friends and partners in their newly opened law firm. In New Jersey (like Ms Plumb). They bicker incessantly (another similarity to Ms Plumb) only for me it was grating not humorous. I’m not sure where the author was going with Don’s personality, but all she pulled off was annoying and completely unlikeable. I really want to go back and count how many times she had him call Alice “sweetheart”. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s like she was trying to resurrect a 1960’s Italian stereotype. As recent law school graduates the characters were what, late 20’s? What 20 something, or let’s say even thirty something, in 2023 refers to a woman as Sweetheart? I will give it one thing- I liked the reveal of who did it at the end. I did not see it coming.
The writing itself wasn’t hateful. I’m going to be a bit nit-picky about one thing- in a sentence about guns she wrote the right to “bare arms”. It made me laugh but unfortunately not because getting a laugh was what was intended. I think this is the first book by this author.
Overall I think she had a good plot, she just needs to work out the kinks. I would bet she gets better with time and I’d give her another try.

Full disclosure: The author is in a writing group with me. She did not solicit this review. The book was purchased, not read for free with Kindle Unlimited
***************************

Don and Alice are law school buddies who open a practice in New Jersey. That’s the slow part. Period. As soon as they are assigned as public defenders for Bianca, bedlam ensues. Bianca is accused of murdering her philandering husband. Where is his money? Why does Bianca need public defenders?

Don and Alice start plowing through boxes of discovery materials- police reports, crime photos, financial records - and make some discoveries themselves.

Along the way to conduct their own inquiries, they stop for food (so much food), get drunk, flirt with each other, and flirt with others. Don needs food to think. Alice gets drunk easily. Strip club? Check. Beauty pageant? Check Holiday Bar Association party? (Food, drinks, AND flirting!)

Add in the county Prosecutor and his cronies, and you’re in for a rollicking good time.

In the tradition of Janet Evanovich’s books, you will laugh, root for the good guys and try to figure out who the bad guys really are. Think you know? I’m not telling!!

Seriously, Murder?

CW Murder, death, discussion of mild DV,sexism

So I'd like to just start by saying I'm not a reader of romance or comedy...mystery yes, but not romcom. Romcom novels have a bit of a rep for being a bit of "brain candy" (light, fluffy) which was what I was after, something not so serious. It kinda missed the mark for me, I had to double check it wasn't written by a man, due to the strange descriptions of the female MC and SCs, there was a lot of focus on boobs, short skirts, strange uncomfortable to read flirtation and mild dirty joking, most of it sexist, some a tad homophobic. All in all, not my cup of tea. Convoluted hard to follow storylines, I lost track several times of all the characters and their plots. I am hard to please when it comes to this particular genre however, I've read many reviews from others who loved it!
Probably a straight up 2.5 stars for me, except that's not an option on this ap so I've rather generously rounded up.

Full transperancy I received this book via Voracious Readers, my review is voluntary, and opinion all mine.

This was so much fun to read!! I don’t know where to begin. Alice & Don made for a hilarious team! 😂🤩 I loved their friendship & banter. 🤩🫶🏻 The book had you intrigued in the mystery 🤩while having you laugh at their banter, at Alice’s internal thoughts, and at their relatable character situations. 😂🤣 Watching these newbie lawyers bicker over whose turn it was to drive to save money on gas or who was up to buy food was such a relatable situation that the characters came to life and you couldn’t help but root for them to solve the big case. 🥹🤩 Also, huge shout out to Monica Hoopes for really immersing us in the world of the characters without making it feel like a textbook. I learned some new things that I didn’t know 🤩 in an entertaining and funny way. I have already ordered the second book in the series and can’t way for her to expand on the series. Don & Alice were a hilarious delight, their friendship was hilariously sweet and the mystery was entertaining. I don’t want to spoil anything but I am looking forward to the other character we saw glimpses of and hope to see them and their interaction with Alice & Don in the next book.

A funny romantic cozy mystery

Seriously, Murder? is a debut cozy mystery that is funny, entertaining and likable! Alice and her best friend Don finish law school and open a law practice together. Their banter was funny for the most part. They have a couple of cases. One is for a lady who is arrested for murder. She is a very difficult client. Another is a beauty pagent mom and her 4 year old contestant daughter. That part got a little over the top but the author poked fun at the parents pushing the little kids who aren't that interested in it. Alice meets the new Assistant Prosecutor Jake and there is some chemistry between them but Alice thinks he is a jerk at first. The mystery is a lesser part although Alice and Don are trying to clear their client and that includes finding someone else to provide reasonable doubt. They think their client committed the murder. It is a unique storyline and was very enjoyable! I am looking forward to reading the next book! #SeriouslyMurder

The first book in what is sure to be a hilarious series, “Seriously, Murder?” is a delightful mash-up of Law and Order and Newhart. But make it Jersey and snarky lawyers.

Our heroes, Alice and Don, are young and struggling lawyers in New Jersey. Full of relatable daily trials (not enough coffee, money, or romance) and courtroom trials (certifiable clients, weird co-workers, and awkward work functions), these two characters will have you immediately invested in their story.

This was a snort-laugh inducing mystery that seamlessly mixed pop culture, police procedural, and good old fashioned who-dunnit.

While there were no gruesome details, there is language and some details that would make my grandmother blush, so keep that in mind. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you won’t be disappointed!

I’m ready for the next book of Alice and Don’s adventures in the New Jersey Judicial System!

This is the first book I asked for since I signed up for Voracious Readers Only, and the email I got from the book's author instantly gave me a positive vibe to start reading her story.
"Seriously, Murder?" is a rom-com/mystery novel that keeps you on your toes for trying to solve a murder, while at the same time keeping you company and making you smile for all the craziness the main characters go through.
Alice and Don are a mess, which obviously makes them extremely relatable. I have loved their characterizations and the dynamic between the two is spot on, I truly believe it is what makes the book a success!
For someone like me, who enjoys -equally- crime documentaries and sitcoms like Friends and The Office, this was such a good book I am so happy to have found.
I wish Monica Hoopes the best of luck in her new career as a writer, I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

I enjoyed this book:

Pros:
the relationship between Alice and don was cute. I would like to have seen more of a romantic element between them as I feel doth protest too much sometimes but that's a me thing.
The clients were funny and ridiculous which made me chuckle

Cons: bit too descriptive about things that didn't overly matter which felt a little spoon fed.
I would have liked to have seen more development, as the book continued don and Alice really started to get their stuff together which was great.
I feel like they would have got their in the end through their sleuthing so I felt like the ending was a bit rushed for me.
The dog reeeeeally didn't sit well with me and felt a bit cringe that she would put Cheerios and popcorn in a dog bowl for a dog that didn't have the best health issues. Made her seem really immature not the older than the other people in her glass law school graduate.

But all in all it was a good read if you are looking for something light and quick to read.

✨𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐈 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤?

This book was such a nice change of pace from my usual go-to genres of choice (thrillers and historical fiction). It was a fun, easy, quick read with a bit of mystery, humor, and romance. The characters are fun, and there so many laugh out loud moments throughout this book. I really enjoy the relationship between our two MC’s, Don and Alice-they are a hoot! This was a definite entertaining read and just what I needed! I will definitely give book #2 a go. This was a hilarious feel good read, which I usually stray away from, but I am glad I decided to pick this one up!

✨𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤?

Parts of it felt a bit repetitive and the characters were annoying at times, especially Don with his comments and his attitude just made it hard for me to like him.

Seriously, Murder is the story of Alice and Don. They’re recent law school graduates who, by some trick of fate, end up being the state appointed representation for a trophy-wife, whose fallen on hard times, in her murder trial. The victim, her husband, was a lawyer, known by our MCs, and also a bit of a dirtbag.

This was an enjoyable, light-hearted and easy read. There were a few humorous moments, mostly the result of Alice being intoxicated. That said, the dynamic between Alice and Don was a little confusing, given they’re friends and nothing more, or are they? The other female characters, outside of Alice, were a bit 2-dimensional and all seemed e be overly dramatic biatches. It would’ve been nice to have a little variety and a couple of females who were a bit more “normal”.

I would recommend this to someone looking for something light-hearted but not especially memorable. This isn’t something that you’ll be thinking about in years to come, but it is entertaining enough to pas the time!

This book may be humorous but it isn't "hilarious" nor is it "laugh-out-loud funny". Real laughs require surprising the reader. Every sentence in this novel is not surprising. I guess that's why it's cozy. No surprises. Every sentence is utterly predictable. I enjoy a good cozy, though. I wouldn't call this a good cozy. I felt dumber trying to read it. If you like your mysteries without any mystery, then this book is for you. I gave up 30 pages in and it's only a 200 page book. She describes every character and leaves nothing for you to imagine, including her protagonist, which is the biggest sin in my book. You have to make me want to follow the protagonist, because there's a question in my mind like: "Okay...what's her deal?" Unfortunately the author leaves nothing to the imagination. Again, maybe that's why it's a cozy. You don't have to think. There are zero layers to this book. It's like a calendar filled with photos of baskets of kittens, full of furry, signifying nothing.

The cover piqued my interest and I started the book. This one's an easy story to get into, without much legal jargon or legal antics. The first scene sets a really good pace for the plot. Alice and Don are two attorneys who land a big client. The mystery unfolds with multiple parallel storylines and subplots, keeping the reader engaged.

Likes:
1. The setting, pacing and the 'cozy' part was well done
2. Short chapters and well edited
3. Fun banter and the humor!!😂
4. Lots and lots of food

Dislikes:
1. The characters - did not like Don at all. I found it difficult to remain invested in their journeys
2. Some dialogues felt unnatural
3. The climax was kinda underwhelming and totally out of the blue

Overall, it was a fun, light, enjoyable read if one's looking for a breezy, detached story. My gratitude to the author for sending an ARC.

I love a good murder mystery, but what’s even better is when it’s combined with a cute romcom!!! That’s exactly what Seriously, Murder? By Monica Hoopes delivers! This is such a fun read!
Alice and Don are partners in their own law firm. Trying to make it successful and profitable enough to pay their rent, they pretty much need to take every case that gets thrown their way. When a big time murder case ends up in their laps, they find themselves over their heads as they hilariously try to defend their client when they are pretty sure she’s guilty!
You guys definitely want to pick this one up, especially if you are in the mood for a lighthearted and funny mystery. I was given a free copy of this book from voracious readers only in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately this one just didn’t click for me. The writing is nice enough and it’s very easy to read, but the humour just didn’t work for me. I found the banter between the two main characters repetitive. It was also billed as cosy crime, but the solving the mystery aspect was given hardly any time, with the reveal coming out of nowhere.

A personal pet peeve was also the decision to describe every character’s outfit. It particularly rankled that almost every female character had her breasts described for good measure. Though once I’d noticed the pattern, that part did have me laughing…

I’m glad to see that other readers appreciated it, just not my cup of tea.

Don and Alice are recent law school graduates and friends who decided to open a law office together, maybe not the best idea! They aren’t exactly incompetent, but definitely nor experienced. When they are assigned a case where a wife is accused I’d murdering her husband, they are really out of their depth, and the case won’t even pay anything because the husband, and consequently the wife, are broke! Then they pick up a second paying client with a charge of harassing her boyfriend by building an obscene object out of snow on his car, then pelting him with snowballs when she found out he was cheating on her. And yes, both clients are busty, beautiful and crazy! This is a funny book, which I did enjoy after getting a free copy. The review is my choice.
