As a grandma, I'm always trying to find ways to inspire my grandchildren to read and write. My granddaughter is beginning middle school so a survival guide is exactly what she needs. Middle School is the perfect time to begin writing a journal. She also loves to draw and I wanted to show her how a journal could be illustrated, too. The Amelia Notebook series is a great introduction to keeping a journal or writing/art notebook. I know my journal got me through some really tough middle school days. Like the time a couple of tough girls followed me home, making fun of my clothes then knocking the books out of my hands. That night I carefully sketched out a plan: A map to walk home a different way each day for the rest of the week.
IT was a really cool book. I will definitely use these tips next year! I recommend this book to anyone who is interesting in funny realistic fiction books. It was okay.
Amelia's middle school survival guide is a really great book. The book is parted into two sections for two different stories. The first story is about Amelia and her best friend Carly going on a class field trip for 3 days. But when her annoying comes along, Amelia doesn't know if she can make it through the the whole 3 days. The second story is about Amelia and all of her gossip. When gossip gets out of hand at the school Amelia tries to explain the gossip and get out of it. She finally realizes that gossip is like fire when she gets blamed for a piece of gossip. Will she be able to get out of this piece of gossip?
This is really somewhere between "okay" and "I so-so liked it" but I'm giving it 3 stars because I think, well, I know I am NOT the target demographic. Still, I found this book (which is really two books in one) to be somewhat disappointing. I like the overall message and I think the books are designed really well (I enjoyed looking at them) but the content isn't nearly as funny and/or witty as I was expecting. I thought this would parallel more with the Wimpy Kid series but it's nowhere near as clever.
I have quite a few kids in my class that LOVE the Amelia books so, obviously, they are well-received by kids, but I wanted and expected more.
Meh. Wasn't really my cup of tea, but I can see the appeal for middle school girls. An okay read for my struggling readers, for sure.-------------Got this one for cheap at the Goodwill and it moved off my shelves pretty quickly this school year. I'd like to read it to find out if it's a good recommendation (or not) for my female fans of the Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries series.
I really enjoyed this book. I will recommend this book to people who just want to take a break from reading or if you want to see how Amelia's life is. This book teaches a very valuable lesson. This book gives you a little tip of how you will survive middle school. This book is especially for young girls. I hope you decide to read it and the other books.
Dork Diaries this one ain't...I finished Survival Guide only because I was hoping upon each page turn that it would get better. It didn't. Do I think it will appeal to middle grade girls? You bet. And that's the scary part.
