If Taz Oswald has one more gross date, he’s resigning himself to a life of celibacy with his irritable Chihuahua, Carl. Carl knows how to bite a banana when he sees one! Then Selby Hirsch invites Taz to walk dogs together, and Taz is suddenly back in the game. Selby is adorkable, awkward, and a little weird—and his dog Ginger is a trip—and Taz is transfixed. Is it really possible this sweet guy with the blurty mouth and a heart as big as the Pacific Ocean wandered into Taz’s life by accident? If so, how can Taz convince Selby that he wants to be Selby and Ginger’s forever home?
Amy Lane dodges an EDJ, mothers four children, and writes the occasional book. She, her brood, and her beloved mate, Mack, live in a crumbling mortgage in Citrus Heights, California, which is riddled with spiders, cats, and more than its share of fancy and weirdness. Due to the Dreamspinner Press scandal, I haven't read an Amy Lane book for several years, even though Lane used to be one of my favorite authors.
When Weirdos appeared as a recommendation, I gave in and bought it. The two adorable chihuahuas on the cover are very convincing.
This novella is indeed as cute as the cover.
Taz falls for the blurty, awkward man with the quirky deer chihuahua at first sight.
Selby is a sweet, eager boy who's certain that he's too weird to love. Taz needs to convince him otherwise. He woes Selby slowly and patiently, plying him with with takeout, good humor, and love.
This is Amy Lane Lite & Fluffy at its best. It's a feel good story all the way, just too short and thus a bit rushed.
2.5 rounded up. this was cute, i guess, but a bit too goofy for me? i tend like a lot of amy lane’s books, but it’s her angstier stories where she really shines best, and this one just kind of plodded along unspectacularly.
The only thing Amy Lane does better than angst is create these sweet, adorkable characters that you can’t help but fall a little in love with, and she’s done it again with Taz and Selby.
At the risk of receiving hate, I’m not a real fan of little dogs. My experiences have all involved being yapped at or nipped, so not the best of friends in any way. But Ginger and Carl made me laugh so hard that I enjoyed them in all of their weirdos glory. This was a very sweet, gentle and quick read that was exactly what I needed what with the sledge hammer that real life is at the moment. Enjoyable, kind and sweet, I recommend this to anyone looking for a simple romance.
This was a totally adorable dog-lover's special edition. Honestly, if you don't like dogs, you will when this is done. If you do, you won't be able to put this down. And if you are a chihuahua lover, this is for you.
A very shy, introverted geeky sort of guy finally gets the nerve to ask the cute guy who works in the local gift shop on a date. Well...he sort of asks him as he's running out the door in embarrassment. But he's happy with his success and the story moves forward quickly. Lots of fun doggie moments and lots of sweet dialogue. And there's a fun older woman, the shop owner who cheers both men on.
Just long enough to fill a craving for a sweet book on a rainy day.
I was not ready for this book when I first heard about it. I was in a massive book slump. Dropping books left and right. But now I'm out of it, and it is time for some of Amy Lane's brand of fluff, especially after reading oldie Amy Lane's lite book. Just look at that cover. How was I able to resist it? I ignored everything beyond the cover art and who wrote it. I had no idea it was so short. I was so into reading this one. I wanted more of everybody. I am just going to recommend this to everybody.
I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
While I'm not a huge fan of small dogs or Chihuahuas, you can't say this story is not the most adorable thing ever. I'm so in love with Selby it's not even funny. I understand him so much and he's just absolutely perfect. And that Taz knew what he needed and took care of him the way he needed, made it that much better. This is a sweet little love story that will bring sunshine in your life!
This is an adorable novella length story that brings together two dog lovers. The book has no angst and is a pick me up on those days you need some true happiness and fluff. The fur babies really take center stage in this story and play an integral role in the developing relationship between the two main characters.
Weirdos is a sweet story that will put a smile on your face from the first page. Selby is a shy and awkward young man but he is also very kind and has a lot of love to give. He adopted a dog Ginger, he rescued off the streets who is just as awkward as he is. Despite his terrible track record with men, Taz is more self confident. He also has an adopted dog, Carl. Both men are adorable. Taz is so caring and protective of Selby. Selby worries his and Ginger's weirdness will cause Taz to leave him. Luckily, Taz is up to the challenge of proving to Selby that he is worth sticking around for. I recommend this book for anyone who like sweet romance with adorable men and even more adorable dogs.
If you are looking for a light read with tons of humor then Weirdo is the book for you. Both men are so sweet and are a great match. The dogs add so much fun. #CMCon24
This book is the perfect Saturday afternoon read. If you are feeling down, lonely, or sad, just pick this book up, and your mood will immediately be elevated. I laughed so hard reading the antics of Ginger and Selby, I had tears running down my cheeks.
Just wait until you read their beach adventures, and “The Blanket Incident”!
Taz is a regular guy, working in a regular job at a seaside gift shop in Santa Barbara. He has a chihuahua named Carl, who comes to work with him, and keeps him company. He’s retelling the story of his bad date, when he meets the man that has been coming into his store. Well, “meets” isn’t the word… More like he’s vaulted over by the shy man as he runs out the store, word vomiting about how he’s been wanting to meet him, and asking if he wants to go for a walk with his dog. Perplexed, Taz has nicknamed him “Babble Boy”, because he didn’t give his name before he rushed out in embarrassment.
It turns out, Selby/Babble Boy has an equally awkward dog named Ginger. Their lives and antics together had me howling with laughter, and tearing up with how endearing they are together. Taz becomes a strong stabilizing force in their lives, and trust is slowly earned by both humans and dogs.
This is a story of pure fluff. There are sexy times, but it’s as sweet and loving as the characters are. There isn’t any angst, nobody dies, or gets hurt. Spoiler alert: The dog doesn’t die either!
It's pure love, told the only way Amy Lane can do: sweetly, with a heavy dose of humor, and a whole lot of kindness and acceptance for who you truly are, and that's what makes you special.
This was actually super short—more than a third of the book was taken up with pages of things like excerpts and plugs for her books. (This review might possibly be the longest ratio of book to review I’ve ever written). It packed a lot in though. I loved those dogs and I could tell that Ginger was modeled after a real dog because only someone with such a weird dog would come up with that stuff (The weirdest dog I ever had was a chihuahua, too.)
There were only three characters, the MCs and Taz’s boss, and I loved them all. I appreciated that with so few people, the characters were racially and gender diverse and each was very much their own person and not like the others.
There’s not any plot beyond Taz trying to convince Selby he wasn’t going to go away, that he was there to stay. But contemporaries tend to be like that which is why I usually find them full. But throw in a dog or two, especially weird ones and I’ll eat it up.
The best part was how she made a verb out of the noun “dog” (as in the animal)”: “the inability to properly dog.” That totally describes my chihuahua Possum. For example, when he slept, he looked like an opossum playing dead.
I was wavering between four and five stars, but the author’s note about how the Ginger was modeled after her own dog and Carl after her daughter’s, both with the same names made me smile. Lane lauded dogs and dog owners and she was right after my own heart. So I rounded up the rating stars that had met in the middle.
Amy Lane has such a way with “sweet” and it doesn’t even give you a tummy ache!!! In this difficult world today riddled with tension, Amy writes Weirdos and was a balm to my heart reading it. Taz Oswald and his adopted Chihuahua, Carl are finally on their own. Taz graduating college and working in a gift shop has it made. His boss and shop owner Wendy hooked him up to a management gig of beach homes with he having one of his own to live in right on the beach. But Taz is missing a partner, someone to come home to. Then one magical day Selbie Hirsh awkwardly blurts out an invitation to both walk their dogs together the next day. Wendy approves and she as the guardian Mom keeps the advice coming… This is a short read, with an author’s note at the end explaining two of the characters are their own personal pets written into the story…..Carl is Amy’s older daughters rescue and Ginger is exactly how Selbie found her by Amy’s husbands friend,,,,and they took her. The 80 pages is just as sweet as you think and pulls on your heart strings…..It did mine….
This is the comfort read I didn’t know I needed—short and sweet, it ticked off all the boxes. With four MCs (yes, four, we are SO counting the dogs), this story stole my heart.
All the smiles, the warm feels, the giggles, were there while I was reading, and there was an unexpected depth to this fluffy novella. I found myself very invested in Taz and Selby, and of course, their dogs, Carl and Ginger.
Shy, awkward Selby with his very-not-cute rescue dog drew me in immediately, and Taz won me over when he pulled up all the stops to win Selby over. Loved these two together, loved their crazy, weirdo dogs (OMG, so much story there), and yes, they are the perfect example that there is someone out there for everyone, and that good things come to those who wait.
Also—I’d be remiss if I didn’t give honorable mention to Wendy, the best boss-slash-friend-slash-puppysitter-extraordinaire.
If you’re up for fluffy sweetness, look no further. Taz, Selby, Ginger, and Carl are exactly what you’re looking for.
If you're looking for Amy Lane's brand of classic, old-school *FLUFFY*, well, look no more, you've found it!
Taz was adorable, Selby was adorable, Carl was adorable, and Ginger was adorable, so to say this novella was angst-free would be an understatement. By a LOT.
I got a decent feel for Ginger's weirdness through her antics, but it only ever felt as if I were being told how Carl was an asshole, since he didn't really growl, snap at, or bark at anyone on-page. He was just kind of there. Judging. That's about it.
One thing that kind of annoyed me was the sudden ending. I bought the story *thinking* it was short at 85 pages; however, it's *really* only 60 pages, with the remaining pages being an intro to an entirely different upcoming magical fantasy book. 😪
I would've much rather had another 20 pages of what came next for Taz and Selby. *sigh*
In the interest of transparency, I was offered ARC in return for an honest review. If you’re like me, there’s a certain guilty pleasure of nipping into the kitchen for a snack before bed. Amy Lane’s Weirdos is the literary equivalent of that late night treat.Taz Oswald is living his life with his chihuahua Carl, when he’s approached by Selby Hirsh, an awkward, loveable adorkable man with an equally adorable dog, Ginger about walking their dogs together. While it’s love at first sight for Taz, Selby has been burned enough times to be wary of a relationship with Taz. Slowly Taz makes himself necessary to Selby, and Ginger. Will Taz ever convince Selby that he’s not going anywhere? This cute, easy read is Amy Lane’s lighthearted best. Take this book with you to the beach, or to while away a rainy day. Enjoy yourself with this book.

Once again Amy delivers a wonderful 'feel good' story. As a fellow weirdo this book made my heart sing. I loved the main characters Taz and Selby, and their dogs Carl and Ginger are so cute in their weird way. Wendy is a wonderful addiction and I love how she embraces all things weird.
I simply LOVED the entire book (re-read it straight away), I do wish it had been longer so I could keep visiting the characters.
This book brought a smile to my face and lifted my spirits.
She's such an experienced writer, that she gets away with this, but this is a very slight book. There is more attention given to the dogs than anyone else. There is no conflict. Two slightly lost, slightly weird guys meet, walk dogs together and then 6 weeks later move in together and more or less live happily ever after. It's sweet and very short. If you need a quick amuse bouche, you could do worse, but if you want something to fill you up, this is not it. It's a one gulp and then you want more...
This short story is exactly what it says on the tin, but better. At the end, the author reveals that the dogs are her dogs, for real, faithfully represented. The two main characters, the secure one and the insecure one, are a delight, as is Wendy, the boss. If you're in need of some funny sweetness, I can recommend this one.
(The last 30% of the kindle file is an excerpt from The Rising Tide.)
This is a light and fluffy Amy Lane story. If you know... you know. It's a fun read, what I think you'd call a beach read. I love the dogs in the book, Ginger and Carl. Taz and Selby are great too. It's heartwarming and fun. You should pick it up if you need a break from the world, it's that kind of cute and fluffy.
Weirdos is a perfect quick read for when you have little time but want to read something uplifting. The guys and the dogs are all a little quirky (one dog more than others :) ) and the way they fit together and make each other happy just made me happy while reading it. It is super short and has pretty much no angst but is just super cute. It made me happy.
Adorable and adorkable! If you are in need of a pick-me-up, read this story; it will leave you smiling. Taz and Selby are both sweet as can be and I dare you not to fall in love with the dogs. As a small dog owner myself, I could relate to the weirdo behavior of Carl and Ginger. I'm not usually a fan of shorter stories, but this hit all the right notes and feels complete. Highly recommend!
This is a sweet, short, and hilarious diversion of a story. From Taz and Selby’s meet cute in a kitschy gift shop, to a relationship facilitated for the two shy men by Carl and Ginger, their respective “weirdo” dogs; I was charmed by this story. It’s not what I normally expect from Lane, but it’s perfect for an end-of-summer sweet dessert.
I really had fun reading this short story. I am new to this author and I enjoyed her character development, "hoomans" and pets alike! I would love to read more quirky tales of Taz and Selby and their sweet and silly dogs. I will definitely re-read this story when I want to laugh or have a feel-good moment!
3.5 stars. I love animals and I love Amy Lane's books! This was a fun little story with lots of puppy love - in so many ways! (My pup is a Chihuahua-Mini-Pinscher, so I like reading about mighty little dogs as well as big dogs and classy, clumsy cats! (Not that there were any cats here.) Thanks for the interlude, Amy!
This is a wonderful short romance, with lots of dogs. The characters, dogs included, are so delightful, I feel in love with the book almost immediately. It is a lovely fast read, with wonderful characters and dogs. Another great story by Amy Lane.
I love a well written short story, and as usual Amy is able to give us all the feels in an easy read! It was such fun and even for a "cat person" I enjoyed the doggy pets. Need a quick cheer up or feet up this is the novella for you.
This was a cute story about some adorable characters. I loved Taz and Selby, and their romance made me smile. Taz's grouchy Carl and Selby's awkward Ginger were the bestest and most wonderful pups. This was a quick, fun read, and I loved every single page!
So cute! Who doesn't love a derpy alien in a dog's body? Chihuahuas aren't my dog of choice, but it's hard not to love Ginger and Carl. Their owners are so sweet together. Taz and Selby are soft and kind and this story is a sweet little vignette of falling in love.
I've tagged this under: * Plot—There isn't one * Style—Fluffy/Schmaltzy
And it's getting three stars because Amy Lane does both of those things very well, and I smiled a lot reading it. Try to get a copy without the deeply unsettling cover art, and all will be well.
