Let's be honest, you are not picking up this book for some light reading. If you are heavily involved with a non-profit or even looking to start a non-profit this is the book for you. I work at a non-profit and the financial side of things can be so daunting. This book really breaks down everything that you need to know when it comes to the financial aspects of a non-profit. It is dense reading but written in a way that makes everything easier to understand. I really enjoyed that the author provided lots of scenarios and examples of what these "money matters" would look like in real life. It helped me to visualize how everything applied to my specific non-profit. For those visual learners out there, there are many visual examples throughout the book as well. I think this is a great source of information and I would recommend it if you are just starting out in the non-profit field.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. I wish I would have read a book like this long ago. I truly wish board members would read this, all people wanting to be board members. The examples (although I wish there were more) are realistic and enlightening. It's so well organized, logical, easily understood and receives my top recommendation for the audience intended for this book. AND a high recommendation for anyone else who cares to learn about the terminology, legalities , ethics, of finances/accounting; let alone for nonprofits. Thanks Goodreads for this book!
I’ve been working with nonprofits my entire career (over 28 yrs) and I really enjoyed this book. It was well-written and contained a lot of valuable information. As a CPA myself, I thought the author did a good job of explaining some complex topics specific to nonprofits. I encourage all Board members and anyone looking to understand the basics of nonprofits to read this book.
Essential reading for first-time nonprofit board members and required for board treasurers
If I had this book when I started running nonprofit organizations 15 years ago I'd have saved many hours of hand wringing and trying to avoid saying "I told you so." Far more important than just skimming the bylaws and buying a table at the annual gala.
Money Matters for Nonprofits: How Board Members Can Harness the Power of Financial Statements by Understanding Basic Accounting. Very interesting. This was a Goodreads giveaway winner.
A bit dry - but that’s what I expected from a finance book! Great resource if you’re unfamiliar with finance, especially in relation to nonprofit organizations. I can see the benefits from staff and board members reading this one.
What I absolutely loved about this book was how easy it was to read for a non-fiction book based on financial matters. Good examples, logical and reasonable explanations. This book wasn’t what I expected but I enjoyed reading it, nonetheless!
This is a manual for those who have been asked to join the governing board of a nonprofit organization. Before you accept, at least skim this book to see if you are willing and able to assume the responsibilities that it entails. Those already on such governance boards might want to refer to this excellent manual for knowledge in the areas where they feel uncertain.
If you serve as a board member for a non-profit organization, but struggle to fully understand basic financial documents, this book offers all the fundamentals you'll need to contribute in more meaningful ways.
