I know who is Gianni Rodari from many different texts from the primary school but literally I've never read a whole book of him. This year, due to the 100th anniversary of the author's birth, I watched a film tribute in the Olympia International Film Festival for children and young people. Thiw tribute contained three films based on tales by Gianni Rodari: The onion boy, The blue arrow and The Cake in the Sky. From all these films, I really enjoyed the third one "Cake in the sky", "La torta in cielo" ( the original italian title ), because this film combine fantasy, surrealism and political criticism especially in the modern liberal society, the imperialist wars and the propaganda of the media. But all these serious issues presented with a very nice, fantasy and suitable for children way. Literally, one of the best film I have watched on my life. So, I searched for the book and I found that this book has ran out in my country. But then, when I was looking posts on facebook, I found a copy of the book at a local bookstore near to my place. Then I sent quickly a message to the bookstore in order to buy it. After all, I bought this book and I started the reading. Well, the film has many changes from the book and the director has added many other interesting characters in the film who don't appear in the book. In othe words, the whole plot is a little different with also a different end but with the same meaning. In conclusion, I really liked the book, the Rodari's writting style, his surreal ideas, his very extra-ordinary plot but honestly I prefer the film version of the story. I don't know I think as an adult this film is more for my tastes but I recognize that "Cake in the sky/ La torta in cielo" is one of the best children's fantasy books I've ever read. For these reasons, I rate this book with 4 stars !!
