A fatal fire takes three lives and destroys a supposedly haunted house that has been abandoned for over 100 years. Leon and Carol Gould buy the property years later. They build a small hotel over the charred remains. As a novelty, they hope the site's haunted history will attract guests. However, it stops being a game when their young son, Adam, is linked to a mysterious death at the inn. Although the police are quick to blame, nothing can be proven. Matters turn even worse when the boy is connected to additional curious fatalities! An occult expert speculates that a power struggle between supernatural forces has endured on this land since ancient times. If he's right, Leon must find a way to save his family, his guests and his hotel...especially when it becomes evident that Adam is being used as a tool in this unholy conflict!
I love how this bio-site asks for the date of my death. I haven't chosen a date to die yet. Quite honestly, I've been hoping to put it off for a while...still, I have lived in upstate NY all my life. I was raised in a small town called East Greenbush. I graduated high school in '79 and attended a few local colleges. My love of the horror genre began early with ghost stories and movies about haunted houses. Cheesy '80s slasher flicks fueled my passion for violent content. and I love the psychology and ancient lore that led to our belief systems in the subjects of ghosts, violence and the paranormal. I still reside in upstate NY and work for The State in Albany.
Donald Gorman has a was of setting a spooky scene and giving his readers a glimpse into the minds of the diluted. He is a talented writer with a gift for telling a gruesome ghost story that reminds us that every choice we make has its consequences. So be careful with your decision making, for you may not like the guilty hell you build for yourself.
Wrongful Secrets is a spooky mystery novel that takes place in a new hotel that has been built on the site two previous tragedies, one that occurred almost 20 years before, and another about 100 years before that. Rumors abound about the haunted nature of the site & now its new hotel. People are drawn to it for all kinds of reasons and in all kinds of ways. Wrongful Secrets has a touch of ‘Damien’ in it, and a hint of ‘The Shining’, and what I really liked about this book is the explanation that is given for these terrible occurrences. Around about page 200, the story really picked up, and I found from then on, I couldn’t put the book down. There is a metaphysical element that really starts to show itself at that point, and I found the concept to be absolutely fascinating. I would like to learn even more about it.
A couple of areas I think the book could have been improved upon was the dialogue at times, and I would have liked even more time to be taken with the big, climactic scenes. However, the overall story is a satisfying one that left me wondering about supernatural occurrences and reflecting upon the nature of good and evil.
