My childhood best friend is now a hot cop, committed to keeping the people of Haver's Creek safe. The one thing not safe around him? My heart.
My sister's unexpected pregnancy has me packing my bags and moving back to my quaint Ohio hometown, after a decade of successfully staying away from the former best friend who broke my heart. I knew running into Jack Montgomery in Haver’s Creek was inevitable.
I just hoped it wouldn’t happen so soon.
Unfortunately, Jack is single and sexier than ever. And my nosy former employer and resident pie maker, Barb, thinks it's a good idea for us to partner together for the annual police department gala.
Avoidance is a must.
Easier said than done.
This Thing Between Us is a friends-to-enemies-to-lovers second-chance romance. The story stands alone.
Oh hey, I'm Erika! There is nothing I love more than good wine and a good book. Except for spending time with my husband, newborn son and permanently depressed looking maltipoo.
Wow! I had to take an hour after finishing this book just to process it. Then I got upset with myself for finishing it so fast. Because, oh my gosh! This was so incredible, heartwarming, surprising, and unexpectedly funny! The characters took me on a ride that I never wanted to get off of. And this one is definitely going on my list of books that I will be rereading again and again.
Talk about a roller coaster of emotions! I think I felt every single emotion in existence a hundred times over throughout reading this book. And it wasn't graceful. I was falling into all of the emotions full force. It was a fast-paced ride, that was for damn sure. It felt like it only took me minutes to read the entire novel because I couldn't get enough and I couldn't get it fast enough. Anything under 500 pages is usually doable in a couple of hours for me but I think I had a record with this one. It was a real conundrum to be honest because I wanted the story to last forever but I wanted to know what was going to happen next just as badly. Erika could write a hundred sequels just about Jack and Whitney and I would read all of them over and over again.
The journey that I went on with Whitney and Jack was *chef's kiss*. Seriously. And I say that I went on the journey with them because I was completely immersed in this book. Especially everything between Jack and Whitney. I loved the way that the point of view switched back and forth between them so I could get an inside look into what they were thinking and feeling. But I also loved that I got to experience through the flashbacks what things were like before Whitney came back to town. The connection that she and Jack shared from the time they were five years old until they graduated and Whitney left. There was also the amazing bond between Whitney and her sister, Savannah. Which reminded me of the bond I am lucky enough to have with my own sister.
Whitney's struggles with her mom were something I related to. Only, in my case, it was my father with the substance use problem. But the emotions she felt when it came to dealing with and thinking about her mother hit home pretty hard for me. It made Whitney that much more relatable to me. And I think it had a huge amount to do with why she and her sister were so close. Those types of situations really bond you together. So when that person you're bonded together with is already your sibling? It makes the bond that much stronger and deeper. I also related to Whitney and her use of sarcasm as a defense because that's me in a nutshell. Every time she gave Jack a hard time or some of her sarcasm, I found myself laughing out loud not only because it was hilarious but because I could see myself saying the same thing if I was in the situation.
Jack immediately came off as a sweet and sensitive guy with a side of alpha protective qualities. And you know I was absolutely here for that. The fact that he wasn't willing to let Whitney continue keeping space between them and was insistent that they figure out what happened between them had me swooning. Jack was bound and determined to fix things between him and Whitney and I'm a sucker for a determined man. Especially one in a uniform. Wow. And as I read more about Jack and how he cared for Whitney as a best friend, the more I fell for this character. His code of honor when it came to issues at the high school and making sure the students were safe was another huge move in his favor as well.

I’m a big fan of Erika Lynn - I have read absolutely everything she has written, including this book in a previous incarnation. Many of the changes from before until this arc version were suggested by yours truly, and I think they really, really helped the proper progression of the relationship between Whitney and Jack, who had a falling out on graduation night and she left town 10 years earlier, with no contact since. She returns, leaving her new life and company in LA when her sister Savannah needs her… and immediately runs into Jack after a literal run-in with her estranged mother.
It’s a rollercoaster ride from the moment she crosses the town border and reconnects with Jack again, learning everything that’s occurred over those 10 years - good and bad. They are being thrown together as they are now planning an event together, so she can’t escape him (as much as she tries). It’s been a very interesting 10 years, and so many things both pushing them together and pulling them apart. The question is whether the original trigger and the subsequent events will keep them from being able to repair their best friendship, or keep them apart… for good.
A definite recommendation for everyone, as this is a fantastic read, super well-written, and the combo of tropes goes so well together! Pacing is perfect, relationships and chemistry between all of the characters is superb. Storyline is brilliant! A couple triggers to note are parental drug use and basically abandonment (ongoing), non main character accidental pregnancy and partner abandonment (pre-story start). If those triggers are no-goes, then perhaps this isn’t for you, but otherwise, this is definitely for you!
I received an advance copy from Erika Lynn, and this is my honest feedback.
I received a digital ARC of this book and it was HOT HOT HOT 🔥🔥🔥! I read the entire thing in one day. I didn’t want to stop reading. There are some explicit sex scenes so if that is a trigger for you, this might not be for you… or you just skip over those parts. This was a great story about lost loves and what misconceptions can make you miss out on in life. You will be routing for Jack and Whitney to figure things out! Whitney does not make it easy, she is not forgiving him for something that she THINKS happened the last night of high school. Will the truth about that night come out in time for them to be together in the end? No spoilers here!
This was a good read. I love a good small town romance. There was a good dynamic between the two main characters. I feel like the author could have gone into the relationship with Whitney and Savannah’s mom but over all I enjoyed this book.
Side note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review
I enjoyed getting to know the story of Whitney and Jack. I liked how the author added tidbits of the past into a chapter- but best of all it was labeled so I didn't feel lost realizing it was a past memory.
I look forward to Savannah's story and seeing more of Jack and Whitney in it.
First book I've read by Erika Lynn. Now this isn't a book to listen on audio with an audience as there are some steamy parts and a few cuss words here and there. If you're not offended by a little steamy intimate moments and a few cuss words here and there- grab this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
it has a strong plot that was packed with many emotions, the characters were strong, the story was written well. This was a good story, looking forward to reading more from this author.
Rating: 3,5 stars Positive thoughts: I loved the writing style with the dual POV's, knowing what goes inside the characters heads is great and when the writings well done, it can get funny and intense too, loved it! I absolutely loved the scene of her return back into town, it couldn't have been better. We get action, shocking encounters and embarrassing moments all in one. I really did feel for our hero, Whitney’s actions didn't make it easy on him.
Negative thoughts: I felt I was left out on some things, with regards to her mother, there could have been more to add to the drama. And the sisters pregnancy, the mystery around it wasn't mentioned at all (perhaps in a sequel?). I was also confused at times, Whitney was always reluctant to be close to Jack and kept telling herself to stay away, but I think she gave in too easily at times. The first time they kissed and made up was a bit too much, but then to have all the awkwardness around them again, I didn't get that. I also wished we knew how Katie truly messed around with the house hunting.
Overall: It's a great romance, fast and easy to read. You won't be able to put it down. There is spice and lots of chemistry. You feel their struggles and are always rooting for them both. You get to meet interesting side characters, I especially loved Barb! You cannot go wrong with a small town, 2nd chance romance, especially when our hero is a hunk of a cop!
As y’all know by now, I’m a mostly fantasy and paranormal romance reader… but every once in a while I will get a book like this that makes me think I should start reading more contemporary romance because oh. My. Gosh. This book gave me all the feels!! The multiple POVs so you can see where both Whitney and Jack are coming from just adds to everything going on in this book.
While she has been away for 10 years, Whitney has to come back to help her sister and from the second she gets back into town it is non-stop drama and entertainment! With being forced to work with her ex-best friend and love of her life, Jack, you get to see how hard he works to get her back - melting your heart in the process, and while at times it can be difficult because Whitney doesn’t always like to listen, it is the sweetest story of second chance love and overcoming past hurt.
I’m going to have to read more of Erika Lynn because she writes a kick-ass story.
I received this book from BookSirens and this is my honest review.
What a lovely story and what great characters. Who doesn't love to read a well-written second chance story, cause I sure as hell do. This book is literally so cute and lovely. I adored every second of it, except the reason Whitney and Jack lost contact for 10 years. Yeah the miscommunication threw me a bit off but trust me that's definitely not where your attention should be. Whitney is our FMC and she's absolutely lovely, a hardworking woman with so much love in her heart, even if it was broken due to an incident when she was 18. She comes to her town cause her sister needs her and their bond is definitely one of the best things in this book. Jack was Whitney's best friend before she left without a word but his feelings for her never did. Both of them loved eachother deeply and I loved reading about them realising it and finally after time getting together. I loved sassy Whitney sm and ofc sunshine Jack, that man had me hooked throughout the book. Also I absolutely loved the bond between Whitney's sister, Savanna and Jack, their relationship was so cute and they really treated eachother like siblings. I also liked how Jack never stopped caring for Savanna and Whitney. Watching live together and Jack trying to spent time with Whitney however he could made me heart flutter. A wonderful, well-written story in which you'll laugh and feel everything.

I devoured This Thing About Us. I have a thing for second chance romances, and Erika Lynn did not disappoint with this book.
Whitney had a rough growing up, courtesy of her mom and after getting her heart broken by her best friend, Jack, she left her small town right after graduating from high school and hasn't been back since. But when her sister calls and says she needs her big sister, Whitney doesn't hesitate. She takes care of things out in California and goes back to Ohio. Of course, fate steps in and one of the first people she sees is her former best friend because he's on the police force. He's so happy to have Whitney back in town and is determined to find out why she up and left so suddenly ten years ago.
Fate continues to step in and throws Whitney and Jack together and he finally gets to hear her reasons for leaving and now he has the task of making her understand what really happened then but also has the task of telling her what has happened since, which could be a deal-breaker for her.

I couldn't get over how immature this herione is...and when we get to the big reveal on why she ghosted the hero her bff of 14 years , it was plain stupid. If I was the hero I would of been piiisssssseeddddd! She thought that he ditched her to go have sex with her grade school nemesis, emphasis on GRADE SCHOOL🤦♀️ Spoiler alert he did not he was helping her upstairs because someone drugged her. Apparently her thinking this happened warranted her skipping town in the middle of the night, cutting off all contact and not speaking to him for more then 10 years. Then when she comes back she is a complete and total witch to him because he broke her heart and he's just trying to find out why his best friend left him without a word. Then there is some stupid twist with the GRADE school nemesis again and the herione gets mad and the hero has to grovel...IMO the twist was super unrealistic and not needed.
I would probably put the rating closer to a four star but really has strong feelings against Whitney for her immature stance on speaking to Jack about their high school feelings. And the Italian restaurant scene was to me, not very sexy for the first encounter, especially with his profession, the plausibility was nil. Beside breaking the law, Jack would want to protect Whitney's honor with some self control
I did love her career aspiration. The mom was a sad figure. The sisters are close as a result.
I liked Savannah and look forward to her story. Maybe next book?
I would recommend this story to readers who like second-chance style stories. I would like to continue with the series and/or read another book by this author as there was more to the story than just the couple, and there were a lot of elements I liked, including the gala and the investigation. I'm not personally a big second chance fan because they tend to include a lot of miscommunications and secrets. A simple conversation would have changed everything, which always makes it tough for me to connect with the characters. I did like the writing style, so I'm interested in reading more by the author.
I received a copy of this book at my request, and the opinions here are my own.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Whitney has been away for ten years and is only returning because her sister is pregnant and needs her. Jack is her best friend and love of her life and the reason she left town in a hurry. I loved Jack, I loved the lengths he went to to get Whitney back. Barb and Savannah are a hoot. I liked Whitney but I found but I hated how she won’t listen and always thinks the worst. Overall I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. I received this book from BookSirens. I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I enjoyed this so much. I’ve read one other book by Erika Lynn and I had enjoyed the story, but it was very lighthearted and wholesome. This Thing Between Us, while still lighthearted and wholesome, brought a level of spice that I just thought was perfect for this story.
I normally really enjoy the small town, second chance romances, the only thing I can’t stand tho, is a lack of communication being the reason a couple walks away from each other. Whitney and Jack lost out on 10 years because of a misunderstanding. While the pain and heartache they felt was real, there were so many chances or things that could have been done to clear up the air around their relationship.
Overall tho, I really really enjoyed this. I found it light and hearty, perfect amount of small town drama, perfect amount of family drama, not too much spice but just enough, and just a really great story. I’d definitely recommend this to others.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Great storyline and great storytelling. A misunderstanding 10 years ago cost them 10 years without each other in their lives. It was torture for both of them. Can they communicate what really happened and move forward? Jack is trying so hard to be nice and friendly and courteous with Whitney, hoping he can regain her trust and her love. What an excellent book. Filled with best friends, hopes and plans for the future, realizing their mistakes and willing to correct them. I absolutely love this book. You will fall in love with Jack just like Whitney did. What an awesome couple.
Loved this book! It was so good. Whitney and Jack are best friends growing up. A misunderstanding makes Whitney leave and stay away from her hometown for 10 yrs. When she finds out her sister is pregnant, she comes back home and runs into Jack. Can they overcome their past hurts? You'll have to read it to find out! I highly recommend this book!

This Thing Between Us by Erika Lynn is a good, and enjoyable small town second chance enemies to lovers romance read. The story has a good story line, and well written read. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry. This story is an incredible, heartwarming, surprising, and unexpectedly funny romance read. The story will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5. This would have been higher rated for me if I could have gotten behind Whitney's sense of betrayal and why she disliked Jack so much. It seemed very childish to be an adult and to be so upset at him for what happened (no spoilers).
I did enjoy the witty written and the way Erika brought out the personalities of the characters. It was very engaging. Everyone in town is interesting and I cannot wait to read more about them!
Enjoyable read that had plenty of emotions and reality in it. Love the strong, compassionate and easy to love lead characters Whitney and Jack. Enjoyed Savannah's sweet, younger sister personality along with Barb, the best pie baker and her hubby, Police Chief. There was enough emotions and twists and turns to the story to keep one's interest and joy of reading.

Overall, I liked the book. Whitney and Jack were a cute couple, and I enjoyed following their story. There were a few minor things that I didn't care for, but nothing that ruined the book. I also really liked their HEA and was very happy with how it turned out, and I'm looking forward to Savannah's story. I was gifted a copy.
This book was a cute friends-to-lovers story with a couple that reunite after a decade. I loved the chemistry between Whitney and Jack and their cute childhood backstories.
I absolutely adored Savannah, who I’m so happy is getting her own story!

Loved Jack and Whitney. Due to a misunderstanding Whitney left and was gone for ten years. Her best friend Jack had no idea why. She is now back and Jack has made up his mind to find out why she left and to make sure she never leaves again. They finally are able to talk things out and find that their HEA was always meant to be.
A well written plot line and the characters were intresting to read. The story line was refreshing to read and the love drama between the pages were irresistible.
This is a standalone romance read.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Maybe I should stop reading small town novel. The h was a piece of work. The writing didn’t really flow for me and the reason for the separation is the most childish sh*t ever. 🙄 DnF
A slow start, but then this book gets really good!
Whitney is back in her hometown to help her sister when she is saved by Jack after she’s rear-ended coming into town. And Jack is the last person she wanted to see, especially because he’s the reason she left in the first place.
Jack’s not letting her go that easy this time and with the help of a mutual friend, they get to work together on a gala to benefit the local police force. So when the truth comes out about why Whitney left, it’s the perfect time to tell her what’s happened in the past three years. Only, he doesn’t and that comes back to bite him.
Jack and Whitney get their happy ending in this stand-alone book in a series.
The first fifty percent of this book seemed to drag for me in a will-they won’t-they get together. I loved how the author added scenes from their past to show how long they’ve known each other and how their friendship evolved over the years. I will say, reading about their split ten years prior to the book then learning what happened was sort of heartbreaking.
