Ross and Kat have butted heads since the day they first met—he’s gruff, grumpy, and always glaring at her; and she’s sarcastic, sassy, and exasperates the hell out of him. But a lot can change in three years, and with a thriving settlement in Whitehorse, Ross and Kat have had to put their differences aside in order to protect their close-knit community. In fact, they’ve come to need one another more than they realize, until now.
Crazed survivors and Ability-hungry madmen aren’t the only repercussions of the Virus, and when a new, unforeseen danger threatens the townspeople, Kat must embrace her unharnessed Ability she’s been trying for years to avoid, and just as Ross realizes his feelings for his smart-mouthed partner, it might be too late.
Together, Ross and Kat will be tested, and in the grips of fear, they must fight to save those they love and themselves . . . with a few dozen grumbles and eye rolls along the way.

Fading Shadows is book number 2.5 in the Savage North Chronicles by Lindsey Pogue. This is a fairly short novella that focuses on Ross and Kat. There were never two people more than these two that deserved some happiness. Both had suffered so much loss. Both give so much of themselves to the people they care about.
Kat and Ross are both very strong willed, stubborn individuals. They have butted heads since day one. Their community is growing as more and more settlers come to their town. It’s been three years. Kat and Ross work together, exercise together, and have grown to respect each other.
“It was always Ross, pushing me, testing me, worrying about me.”
Kat has still not accepted her ability nor has she made any efforts to practice or control it. She would rather not have it at all. But once again, danger threatens their settlement in a new and unexpected way. Kat is forced to both face her changing feelings for Ross and accept her power when they are threatened.
I love seeing how the characters I have grown so much to care about are changing in each book as time progresses. We get some updates with Sophie and Alex and also see Beau changing as he grows into a young man. The next book, Untamed, will focus on him I believe. I am so excited to see what comes next for this group.
Lindsey Pogue’s FADING SHADOWS is a tale of moving on, of reflecting on the past, growing, living beyond the scars and the tears, and moving forward into the future, no matter how uncertain it is. Peppered with humor only old friends can share, heartbreak and memories, as well as new friends, new adventures and, as always, fabulous writing!
The virus has changed the world and those with special powers are learning to come to grips with them, clearly an ongoing process that can be as painful as it is amazing. Good, evil, sorrow, joy and hope for the future make this brief novella a wonderful addition to the Savage North Chronicles that sheds so much light on the characters we have come to know!
Brilliant writing from a talented author who knows how to use her words! top of the Gem pile for a series, book after book making it even better!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Lindsey Pogue! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Another epic read from a very talented author! This book brings the story of Ross and Kat and the struggle and joy of life moving on. Each of them have been through tough histories, and they don't seem to get along overly well, but the underlying truth between them surfaces whether they want it to or not! The humor in this story is always top notch, the tears are also heartfelt. There is adventure, frustration, love, laughter, and everything that I always thoroughly enjoy in the writing of Lindsey Pogue. The Bear is such a great addition to the outside of the base story! This novella is definitely worth the read for this series!
I really enjoyed getting Kat and Ross' story and their developing love story. When we last saw them, they weren't big fans of the other and could barely be in the same room together. After 3 years of working closely together, they've developed respect and friendship. Their banter and jabs haven't changed but that's a big part of their friendship now and they both look forward to the interactions and ongoing competitions. There is also more from the other characters and a prelude of what's to come for some.
This is a short read that is big on character development, action and humour. Some interactions with Beau that progress his character. I'm really looking forward to his story next!
Three years have passed and Whitehorse is a proper little community now. Everyone does their best to chip in and help things to run smoothly. Ross and Kat have had a rocky relationship since the very beginning but they have learned to work side by side to protect their neighbors. That's more important now than ever since there is a gang of teenagers looking to disturb the peace in the area.
I can't get enough of this series or these characters. Each time I get a deeper glimpse into a particular character and their life, it's a treasure. This time the story focuses on Ross and Kat. Time is moving forward, people are healing from the virus and its aftermath. But scars remain. In no two characters is this more true than Ross and Kat. Each has an ability that is more burden than blessing. Both struggle with their past losses. Their memories of yesterdays still hurt. Both are prickly and when together, they bicker and bicker some more. Neither sees a future with anything more than work. But then one day they see through new eyes. Without realizing it, they each found a way into the other's heart and life now has a whole new look. This is not the romantic, roses kind of love story. However, it is one fitting the harshness of Alaska. It is solid and there is a natural beauty of friendship and kinship. I enjoyed every second. I can't wait for more. Thea growing up and getting to know Cal, watching Beau come into his own and Bear. Confession time, I may have teared up a time or two. Ross was more than I expected and the reveal at the end. I'm glad Jackson is a mess!
I loved this novella. I really love that each book in the series includes the same main characters, but each book is focused on a different group within the main characters.
This book gives us a look into the minds of Ross and Kat, two characters that have been in previous books but were not in the foreground as much as some of the others. I think this book fits great with the rest of the series. It tells us how the Ending World is doing a few years after the virus, how everyone is dealing with their abilities and reconstruction of their corner of the world. It’s a great addition to the Savage North Chronicles and I wish it was longer!
To survive and stay safe in the new world isn’t easy. In Fading Shadows, author Lindsey Pogue grabs your attention immediately. Time has moved on, relationships have progressed and the kids are growing up.
Kat is still trying to come to terms with losing Elle’s sister JJ. Everyone wants to know why she won’t practice her ability. She doesn’t want to think about it.
Ross is still dealing with his power and being Kat’s boss. She knows how to push his buttons all the time.
The one thing the entire community of Whitehorse has in common is a group of youths who threaten their peaceful existence. To continue making them safe knowing the patrols won’t be enough, they start planning on how to secure entrance points.
Great continuation of this series; I just wish the book was longer...
Kat and Ross!!! I am so happy we got to see more of these two! I adore them. Their emotions feel so real and true in this story. Very well written. I won't give away any spoilers but this is a fantastic novella with danger, excitement and insight.
I enjoyed reading this novella. Ross and Kat's story was well written and very touching. It's been a while since a book brought me to tears. This is a good addition to the Ending World books. I suggest you read all the others if you haven't yet!
I was so happy to read this novella focusing on Kat & Ross! I won't give any spoilers but it's definitely worth the read. If you haven't read the books prior to this novella, so yourself a favor & read them first. Not only will they provide background to this novella but they're excellent! Great job Lindsey!!
Another novella that follows Kat and Ross. This jumps us a couple years in the timeline and we follow characters not story. I like that we get more into life after the virus but there isn't quite enough. The balance isn't there. I was also thrown by the pronunciation of yupik. Some of the Alaskan things are spot on but some are not.
I loved this novella in the Savage North Chronicles! If you haven’t read this series yet you Absolutely should!
Ross is a great guy and he is hilarious at times! I love how him and Kat pick at each other. It’s funny because I didn’t trust Ross at first. But he’s one of my favorites now!
Getting to see more of our favorite characters is Never a bad thing! Seeing how their struggles are changing and relationships are evolving I absolutely need more! It gets you amped up for the next book Untamed.
Love this series and hope there are many more. Gentle love stories both human and animal, combined with action and fantastic apocalyptic fiction. Recommend.
Great book! I loved the addition of new regular characters. Ross and Kat’s relationship felt real, if tumultuous. And we still got to see the original Whitehorse settlers.
Each home was growing. New members and a whole lot of teenagers. Love was in the air. A little peace and new baby on the way. Continue to enjoy this series.
I've been really enjoying these "intermediate" novellas between the main books that give us little snippets of how the crew is progressing in their new, post-apocalyptic world.
This one specifically gives us a couple insights into the outside world (beyond Whitehorse) and expounds on the teenage gangs briefly mentioned in Midnight Sun. And also introduces a lil happiness for two of our emotionally tortured characters. 👀 With the necessary time jumps between books (and even within books), it's great to have the option to see at least a little of what is happening in between.
I'm so excited to start Beau's book next! It's bittersweet that the series is coming to a close with everyone growing older, getting their own stories, and the world settling down (at least a bit?). Agh! I'm loving this series. . . . . **content notes: mentions of a miscarriage, violence by humans and animals (animal is off-screen), death, (non-fatal) electrocution. . . My Reviews - Savage North Chronicles: #1 The Darkest Winter: 5/5 ⭐ #2 The Longest Night: 5/5 ⭐ (novella) #3 Midnight Sun: 4/5 ⭐ #4 Fading Shadows: 4/5 ⭐(novella) #5 Untamed: 4/5 ⭐ #6 Unbroken: 4/5 ⭐ #0.5 Day Zero: Beginnings: 4/5 ⭐ (prequel novella)
The story was soooooo good. Read it in less than a day. Cannot wait to see what happens with everyone else. Will the author bring back Jake and Zoe soon? I liked that they showed up in Midnight Sun. I also liked the mention of the crew receiving oranges from the south. That would be a great story, how they all connected around the US! Loved that Kat and Ross were featured and finally brought together! I love their dynamic. It was good to see how everyone has been moving on since the first story. Excited to see what happens next!
I can’t believe how fast I’ve read this series so far. Any spare moment I try get more read. The characters are amazing, you live their life right along with them. Not gonna lie I have been in tears. X
I really enjoyed getting to know Ross and Kat better! ♡ That was a sweet novella. ♡ I was a little anti-social for day but it was so nice to get through this book in one go - there was no chapter where I could stop myself from reading the next one! It has been a few years and Whitehorse has taken on a few new people, but our focus is Ross and Kat, and what a sweet focus it is. However, the townspeople cannot let their guard down. It might have been a few years since The General was disposed of, but there are still crazies and madmen on the loose and everyone has to band together to get through their next battle. A romantic underlying thread, but gripping and well paced.
Short and super sweet novella, with action to boot!
I really enjoyed the other books in this series and waited to read this one when I was binging it because there was an error in the ebook when I first opened it. Anyway, I didn't care for this one as much, so I'm glad it was a novella. The characters weren't really people I had put much emotional investment into before this, which can sometimes be awesome (Meghan Ciana Doidge is great with the shorts about side characters!) but it just didn't hit the mark for me here. Honestly, I think it's less about the characters and more that I like this series for the thrills and drama and the fight between good and evil from people with interesting powers. This had almost none of that. Not sure if I'll pick up the next one, which is too bad because I really loved the first few books in this series.
A nice, obviously briefer accompaniment to the main books. I don't think anything is - or will be - revealed or really not able to be understood in the later full-length books if you do or don't read this, but if you're like me and subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, it's certainly worth your time. Nice to have focus being primarily on the adults this time - though they kind of act like the love-sick kids in the last tales tbh. Enjoy.
What a GORGEOUS burgeoning LOVE story and romance set in an adventure filled Dystopian journey!!!:-). The writing is soooo superb and will transport you to where ALL of these FANTASTIC characters are and you will be feeling each emotion right along with them!!!:-). LOVED IT!!:-)
Not my favorite of the series, but definitely a good read, and important to the rest of the books. The local grouches deserves some time in the spotlight, as we all need to discover our value and right to lead a happy life.
I knew when Kat entered the book she would end up being a tremendous character. Of all the women her and Elle are my favorites. I really enjoy the series because it is a great story. Great read.
Spends the entire book building up to Ross & Kat getting together but there's no love scene, it's just "Poof! They're together" and it's over. Same as the last book with Alex and Sophie. So dissapointing and such a waste of time.
Book 4/2.5 was very short. I expected a longer book like the others. In this book there are new problems, new characters and some of the old characters. The story concentrates on Ross and Kat. I enjoyed the story.
If you've got this far in this series, you don't need a sales pitch…LOL. Again, this book has everything you're looking for in a post-apocalyptic book. Just get it.
