The Call of Jonas Creed

Rate this book
Heroes may be forged in fire...

Legends speak of a shadow realm that echoes our own, called the Void, where gods and demons roam the very paths we mortals tread, hidden from our sight and touch, judging us at our worst moments, laughing at our woes.

The Void is inaccessible to all still living save those blessed, or perhaps cursed, with the means to cross between realms. The lands of the gods are not to be trespassed lightly, but the rewards...

Deep in the heart of Yahrska, past the beautiful Brokar Valley, lies Barren Hollows: a small and peaceful village where all Jonas Creed wanted was to leave his past behind and become the loving husband and father he swore he always would be.

But fate leaves none unscathed. Someone is looking for the Voidwalker, and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

...but Legends are born in blood.

It's been so long since I've read an epic fantasy adventure that I almost forgot how engaging this type of novels are.
The Call of Jonas Creed is a small novella, one that's unfortunately pretty short, but I guess that, if a book can capture and hold your attention in about 50 pages, it means that the author is doing a good job.
I can't say much about this epic revenge story because everything would be a spoiler, but I recommend reading if you're a fan of the genre.

The Call of Jonas Creed is a novella set in a fantastical world, where only a select few are able to cross between realms of the mortals and those of the gods and demons. Our male main character is one of those few, called Voidwalker, but chose to leave his past behind to instead become a doting husband and father.

His peaceful existence isn't of lasting nature, as a unknown force is looking for him and takes what is most precious to lure him out. Jonas sets out on a journey to find what was taken and avenge what was lost.

The pace of this novella is set high so the reader has to adjust to the world quite quickly, but as the world building is done well, it reads a little bit like really good, a little bit oldschool (but in the best possible interpretation of the word) fantasy novel. The ending felt a teeny tiny bit rushed to me but it does leave me very curious to what the story of Jonas Creed has in store for the reader.

All in all, a very quick read that draws you in and gets you hooked to read more of this series. I would recommend to anyone who misses the feeling of the classic fantasy read and enjoys the tales of revenge sought out.

The Call of Jonas Creed is a short novella that follows Jonas on his journey of getting his son back who was taken during a huge bloody massacre in his small quite village.

Jonas starts out as this quiet loving father/husband, we get the back story on the birth of his son, and then boom it jumps to his village being attacked and his wife being killed, and his son (grown adult son by the way) being taken. After this we get this speed run of how he handles all of this, which was honestly a let down, because once that speed run is over he is now some wild blood thirsty killing machine, I would have liked to have seen a more in depth reaction to the situation. And then the story just starts to focus so heavily on action.

While I love action in my stories just as much as the next person there is a thing as too much action, and this unfortunately for me, was definitely over the top. It was just relentless action after action after action, that it made the story dull. I wanted more moments learning who Jonas was, how he became a voidwalker, why him being a voidwalker was such a big deal. We were given little bits here and there and then it was pages of bloody action. It even ends with an action scene that left me feeling emotionless at the outcome and its because I felt like I really didn't get get to know Jonas.

The voidwalker stuff, I'm honestly kind of confused by it. Apparently every time this man goes it into its just going to be literal action hell, but also I felt when he used it the 2nd time it was unnecessary, he was trying to infiltrate a base where his son was being held, going into the void was apparently the only choice. I understand how he accesses the void but how its described just wasn't clicking in my mind, I think if it was handled in a slower manner, instead of an instant moment of him being attacked each time he went into it (minus the first with the old man) it would have been easier to digest.

There are gods and lichens, and monsters and sorcery and so much, but the world lacked the building it needed to make it all coherent. It just felt like one checklist item after another without adding any lore to make it make sense. The Soul part had me really confused, I either completely missed where he gave it up, or it was a part that was skipped over in the speed run of his days after the events in his home village.

The writing is good, the action scenes while I was burnt out on them, where really well done, it was very easy to visualize what was being written, if you have a weak stomach this might be upsetting for you, but I would have liked to have seen more non-action scenes to balance the story out. More world building and lore developing, right now we barley have anything on the Voidwalker and why its such a big deal, which is the part I was more interested in. I understand not revealing everything, but it would have been nice if something was given aside from "someone is planning something and the gods are involved".

Not much to say about the individual characters, its hard to say Jonas is a deep man with a lot of trauma and secrets, which I'm not saying he doesn't have, but because it was all speed through it was hard to really feel for him. Him being a blood thirsty killer though was on point and I can't deny that. The Blind old man didn't give me those ominous vibes that I'm sure Visser was going for, he just appeared, was kind of a jerk and then gave very little info about anything, plus it was kind of obvious he "wasn't who he really was", for me it comes down to not enough time spent with him as the "blind old man" in the real world, to give those ominous vibes. Jorin wasn't present much so I have no thoughts on that guy.

The Call of Jonas Creed is a decent start to a new world, that I think if had been longer could have really blown me away. Visser's writing is very easy to follow and the action scenes are flawless. Depending on the length of the follow up I might continue this, I do feel its a story that would benefit from being longer.

I received this ARC from Booksirens.com at no cost and am providing an unbiased review.

There are several mixed feelings I have from reading this story, the worst of them being it was so short. I honestly felt like I was reading a novella, that would open up into this whole epic fantasy story, and perhaps it will, but for now I felt a little let-down. I'm going to kinda jump around with my thoughts....

The story drew me in, as I wanted to find out what the main character, Jonas, was going to do, and possibly lead more into telling why events happened as they did. I understand he was leading a quiet life, small family, when they were taken from him (wife killed, son abducted) all to lure him out with his special power, called Voidwalking. And that was the story. I was hoping for more of the back-story about Jonas - maybe how he came to have this ability, and the life he lived because of it. Maybe in future tales?

Obviously, I felt that character building was lacking, as was world-building. There just wasn't time in the shortness of the story to really delve into those small details. Otherwise, I did enjoy the tale, and would love to hear more about themain character. Anyone that likes short stories, woudl enjoy this one. Would be great in an anthology.

A brutal adventure with feelings overflowing!!

This very short story is brutal for our emotions!! It's starts so wholesomely and then gradually gathers a dark ambiance all around untill the dark brutal ending!

Deep character?? Check! Jonas is amazing, a hard man full of pain and a past that's slowly revealed to us! The mysterious not so blind old man who is more than meets the eye and gives an eerily feeling all the time!!

Vast world?? Not so much, but it's a short story and might be expanded in the next books!

Magic system?? The voids and Jonas' ability are both interesting but not very well explained or explored! But I think there's room for some lore explanation now that we were introduced to it!

Creatures?? Oh my! The beasts are terrifying and nightmare inducing!

Brutal fights?? You bet! Brutal and detailed!! You almost feel the blood splatter!!

So all and all it's a nice fast read that leaves you wanting more!!

Thank you both the author and BookSirens for this opportunity!!

This ebook was freely given to me through BookSirens in exchange for an honest review!!

I picked this short story because the synopsis was intriguing, and I am so glad I did.

Marius Visser has created a chilling world where some people will stop at nothing to achieve their ends, and many people will suffer in the process.

Throughout this story, the main character, Jonas, has to make some difficult decisions. His decisions and actions will leave their mark indelibly on his soul. Great world being, albeit not a world in which I would wish to live.

The magic in this world is both terrifying and enthralling. I do hope this is a prequel to a complete series in this strange and disturbing world.

The Call of Jonas Creed

Marius H. Visser

Begins with childbirth, every society has its norms for how it is done. Men usually excluded it being the preserve of midwives.

The men in this village are axemen fellers. The story jumps two decades between chapters.

The village is attacked by marauding bandits who make off with Jonas’ son.

From this point the tale becomes phantasmagorical as Jonas seeks for his son.

In this world there are mulitple gods and malevolent beings. Since this is an intro to a book series the story ends abruptly with the conflict unresolved.

This author talks of individuals in the third person plural as they and them.

One is left rather shaken as the tale progresses so rapidly no character or plot point is ever fully developed.

The Call of Jonas Creed is an excellent fantasy novella by the very talented Marius Visser. The MC is put through a very difficult situation that kept me turning pages as quickly as I could. I sincerely hope there is a novel to follow this as I definitely want to read what happens next. I highly recommend it.

The Call of Jonas Creed was engaging from the get-go and well-paced. It would have been interesting to see more of Jonas' backstory, such as how he became a Voidwalker and how that impacted his life. The short length of the novella left me wishing for a bit more character depth and worldbuilding. On the whole, however, I enjoyed the tale and hope to hear more about Jonas in future books.

this does what I enjoy about the fantasy genre, it was what I was hoping for from the description. The characters were interesting and worked in the fantasy novel. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Visser.

I thought the story was okay. The characters don't really get much development, nor does the world itself. Since the text is so short, nothing really has a chance to "sink in" before the story moves on. It felt like every two seconds, there was another action scene, which prevented me from being able to follow the story itself or get a feel for the plot.

Really nice novella about Jonas Creed, a Voidwalker. Simple tale of revenge but done well. Reminded me of an old school fantasy novel with it's directness. Felt the ending was slightly rushed but a great novella

The story was okay. Some wording that felt out of place and almost as if the words were there to make it sound of higher writing rather than just telling the story. Overall, the story was okay with an interesting concept to it.

This novella left me wanting to read more and find out what happened to the characters. However it was a lot more violent than I was expecting with blood and gore everywhere. It could have done with more explanations as what voidwalkers were and what the void actually is. Maybe this will be more apparent in the complete book which I look forward to reading assuming it may contain some gentler scenes.

This is the start of a series. I was immediately drawn into the story. It is very well written; I am there myself. I could imagine The Void; I saw the gods and the creatures in my mind. Exciting battles, letting out 'Oh!' and putting my hand on my mouth. Emotional parts, that brought tears in my eyes. I need to know what happens next. If you like fantasy, then you should read this.

Third time read. Every time a new book is published, I reread from the beginning. Love this series.

Fourth time reading. Expecting the next book in 2 months. Rereading the whole series.

Interesting short book. Jonas Creed is a voidwalker and has lost his wife and needs to rescue his son. Lots of gore and swearing not what I usually read but overall, the book was good.
