When the truth involves demons, murder, and magic, everybody gets hurt.
Fabian knows with magic comes pain. He already lost one friend to a demon attack. Now his best friend is falling apart in the bloody aftermath of what should have been a joyful celebration. With demons haunting the streets of Greenvalley, and dark secrets threatening to tear their group apart, Fabian wishes he’d never unlocked the water magic inside of him. But he is no coward. Fabian might whine and moan, but when his friends are in danger, he knows he’s got to step up. With an ancient prophecy set in motion, Fabian’s ready to face his magic. Only to find it’s gone.
A River of Magic is the second instalment of the action-packed Ashuan Greed trilogy. If you like Buffy’s wit and snarky one-liners, the magic of Charmed, and the supernatural drama of the Vampire Diaries, you’ll love this new urban fantasy series.

The second book in the Ashuan Greed series definitely kept me on my toes. Following on from book 1, we see Samantha, Lucile, Rachel, Fabian, Jan and Matt coming to terms with their new powers as they navigate teenage life and battling the monsters that plague their home. Whilst also dealing with their loss from the first book, the friends find that working together isn’t always as easy as they’d hoped. New friends and enemies test their loyalties and a deadly betray leaves them all wondering who they can really trust. This book is just as emotional as the first and you can really feel what the characters are going through. With the same episodic feel as the first, this book reminds me of episodes of a tv show combined into a story. I feel like all three books strung together would be like a full season of a tv series. Each book a few episodes at time. It’s very cool and I’ve never read another book like it. Overall I really enjoyed this read and I’m definitely keen to see how things end in book 3 now.
There is something about this group of teens that grabs your attention and holds on to it through out this story. Interwoven between the magic and fantasy of these books is the lives of these teens trying to get through the last years of schooling and trying to figure their way through life. Their lives have changed when they acquired the magic granted to each. Janna keeps them real, its not all fun and games having magic and these kids struggle with their new powers, this keeps the book interesting. They make mistakes and people die, such as would hapoen if we were granted these powers. Her descriptions of the area where they live make you want to book a ticket to Germany. This is the secound book of the series and could be read alone, but you would miss a lot of back story by not reading the wonderful book one first. These are possibly the best fantasy/magical books I have read. They put me in mind of Terry Goodkind.
*I received a review copy from the author for my voluntary and honest review.
In this book Lucille, Matt, Samantha, Fabian, Rachel, and Jan are still dealing with their newfound power and Nico’s death. They find themselves facing a hell animal that poops out eggs that give people magic powers and an addictive high, a wayward group of gnomes at Christmas, Matt’s secret comes out, flesh-eating ghouls, and a nightmare eating power stealing monster. Not to mention they met the Seer who informs them they are the six from an ancient prophecy about the end of the world. And two more Emblems of powers find their way to the group. Plus ….. Midterm Exams. After the events of Matt’s demon awakening the group is splintered in ways that may be irreparable.
Just like my review of the first book in the series I gotta say my favorite part is how this book is episodic. Five small stories of the group fighting monsters while the overarching plot of the story ties them all together and helps with the flow. The character development continued beautifully through all the different perspectives. It's interesting to see Matt show more of himself after his demon side is found out about. Also, meeting some of his family was unexpected and finding out how the main demon was related was a twist. I definitely cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.
In this second book, we find our six teenagers starting to grow up and learning how to use their powers - both what they can do and what they shouldn't do. We also meet some of Matt's family and his secret comes out with dreadful consequences. I didn't much like Lucille in the first book, but if it wasn't for her, the group would have flown apart after Matt's birthday party, and I found her less irritating this time. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
* I received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange pour an honest review. Thank you Janna Ruth.
Janna Ruth is a master of complicated characters and relationships. It's seldom I'm so infuriated, invested and rooting for a character at same time. And then multiply this for all of these teens in the group. They got such true issues and weaknesses depicted in a way it draws you in. She doesn't go easy on them at all. I think I usually go for more plot driven books, but I'd say this series got both. At times it's a bit _too_ heavy. So I wouldn't recommend these for someone who's just searching for a cozy good time.
