Little Tales of Hedgehog and Goat

A delightful illustrated novel for children about a goat and a hedgehog who meet in a farm field and become best friends.

Goat has a tiny pink shed in a rolling paddock. She likes to stand on top of the little shed and dream of meeting other goats in other paddocks. Sometimes she looks at the sky and imagines the clouds are her friends, especially when they look like goats bouncing and bounding in their sky paddocks. Most of the time Goat is lonely. She wishes the family in the pink house at the top of the hill would find another goat for the paddock. A best friend goat.

Goat is looking at the sky and dreaming of a best friend when she hears a strange squeaking coming from a ball of prickles. It's Hedgehog, and she is crying.

This is the beginning of a most unexpected friendship. Though Goat is a creature of the day and Hedgehog hunts at night, life in their rolling paddock will never be lonely or boring again.

Chock-full of adventure and wisdom, tall stories and tiny poems, Little Tales of Hedgehog and Goat is a charming novel about friendship and finding the magic in the every day. It's the perfect bedtime chapter book that will be enjoyed by child and adult, and all fans of Winnie the Pooh, Wind in the Willows and Snake and Lizard.

I don’t normally include my kids’ read alouds toward my books but this one was ACTUALLY good literature. A very poetic read and distinctly from New Zealand so was fun to discuss those aspects with my kids.

A collection of farm animal stories featuring the hedgehog and goat of the title, and as well, a horse and several other creatures. When this book arrived I was so excited, what a gorgeous cover, with little bits of sparkle-arkle, the cutest cover by Kimberly Andrews and cream paper, lots of space between the lines and I thought, perfect for little readers.

I end up with extremely high praise for the illustrations and a lukewarm response to the stories. I wanted more. I'll tell you what this feels like. You know those moments when you are lying on the grass or on a bed with a little person beside you, and you make up stories, you meander along with your stories and you respond to the things they love by expanding on them with more stories, it is just the lovely moments of wondering and thinking about stuff. The stories don't necessarily hang together or make much sense, they are personal stories that you share together. This is what this book feels like. Better spoken to a wee person rather than written in a book.

I am aware that Paula Green is an icon, that she is beloved by my colleagues and admired far and wide, indeed I am an admirer of her work. But this one was a bit of a miss for me. And I await execution by the literati for my opinion. Oh well.

The sweet tales of farmyard and native animal characters meanders gently along. Paula's writing is poetic, funny and engaging.

"Stop acting the goat, Goat!" squeaks Hedgehog.
"Stop acting the hedgehog, Hedgehog!" bleats Goat.
"You nearly squished me with all your nannyfoolery!" squeals Hedgehog.
"You nearly stabbed me with all your spinejaggery!" bleats Goat.
The grey clouds make the shape of catastrophe in the sky. The leafy wind blows harder.

Inside, the fantastic monochromatic illustrations by Kimberly Andrews have a water-coloury effect. She uses a palate of nature for the front cover which draws you towards our two central characters.

Kiwi kids will enjoy recognising familiar animals but I hope the book finds it's way further afield. It's well pitched and beautifully written for reading aloud to a younger child or for an older child who is branching into chapter books on their own.

Fabulous book. Goat lives on a farm and she makes friends with Hedgehog. But the book is so much more.

Paula Green is a poet who has won numerous awards and has TWO poetry blogs. She is an excellent author.

‘Little tales’ is easy to read and is full of fun illustrations. The language is great for slow readers and English is a second language.

The type style is big, fun, and this farm could be any anywhere in NZ.

Hedgehog and Goat are great friends and these excellent stories have great emotional intelligence. Goat and Hedgehog don’t always get a long, get things wrong but make up and are great friends. It is a cosy book for early readers. I loved it and looked forward to reading it chapter by chapter each night.

This book will make a great present for a child who loves reading, a parent who wants to read to their children and school and main libraries.

My seven year old loved these stories of Hedgehog, Goat and Horse. We had the most enjoyable time reading them together.
