'Time bombs are the most dangerous before they are opened'

Opal's life has become one nightmare after another, one betrayal after another, one kidnapping after another, the only safety she feels is with Steven. Whilst they haven't seen each other for years they instantly fall straight back into the teasing, sweet friendship they had before, which is heartwarming to see. But there is also a sizzling heat gradually building as Opal recovers and as the investigation proceeds, they both acknowledge that they had hoped for more but the timing wasn't right, the timing is now right and they certainly act on the sparks....Steven has a very unique remedy for solving Opal's nightmares! A very twisted tale with shadows, secrets, betrayal, corruption and greed.

Oh I really enjoyed this one. A romantic suspense read with second chance romance trope and family drama. It's easy-to-read, sweet, engaging and entertaining. I can feel the romance frome the get go, this book definitely heavy on the romance part. The mystery behind the attack of Hero's love interest is pretty solid, even though I guessed it correctly, even though I wished it won't go to that kind of directions, but still it's a good mystery, I love figuring out the why and the who, it also felt rushed at the end with dumping everything on the reveal in just few pages, and didn't feel the climax.
As for the characters, the banter was superb. Love Steven and Opal, they're just sweet couple and definitely made for each other. Love how sweet Steven is, he's an alpha male but with a lot of sweetness. Opal's clinginess and whining a bit annoying for me, other than that I'm good.

Overall, it's a light sweet romantic suspense read, perfect to read in between heavier books or when you have a crazy hectic stressful day.

When I started this book, Opal kinda annoyed me. She was just so whiny and sad but then I let myself truly feel and understand what she had gone through. To be kidnapped off the street, beaten and nearly drowned her reserves had been wiped out. Her strength wasn't physical as Steven's was. Her strength came from pushing herself each day to get up, lean on those around her and work to heal. In reality, her tears and fears where more believable than if she would have emerged a superwoman with no emotions.

Steven is new to the job working for Levi and Ice and his first job takes him back in time to his could-have been first love. I love the underlying matchmaker vibe that permeates the book. Reyes is clearly in the know, maybe because he had been through it also in a previous book. Glad to see Levi and Ice in this story. The consistency of characters throughout the stories is a great tie and it allows us to check in on previous heroes.

The depth of the betrayal felt by many characters in the book surrounds the central mystery. It is in learning of this betrayal and learning how to push through that we learn not only Opal's strength but also the depth of the feelings between Opal and Steven.

Dale Mayer is fast becoming an auto buy for me. The most I read of the various connected series the more I enjoy as the characters are starting to click into place. This is the first Seal of Honor book for me and it can be read standalone. It does connect to some of the others series so I was a little familiar but that wasn't necessary. I will say, for me, I have more reading to.

Overall recommended.

The case Levi has for Steven is one he doesn't expect and is practically running for the door when he hears what has happened. Opal is friend from long ago, he keeps in touch but not as frequently as he maybe should.

The last couple of years have been hard on Opal and her mother, Ruby. Her father was a dirty cop, and even his partner Marshal didn't know what he was up to. Marshal had to leave the force with all the side-eyes and constant questioning of his abilities. It was him and a doctor friend of his who saved Opal from certain death.

When Steven and his partner on this, Reyes, meet up with Marshal there's a lot of
secrecy around where they were going. Marshal has put Ruby and Opal's safety above all else.

As they get details, what they find is there are a lot of suspects due to the nature of the crimes Opal's father committed. All Opal knows is that there questioning of her centered on some sort of stash.

As Steve and Reyes get ready to go check into their hotel they are met with a resounding NO from Opal.

The last Opal knew Steve was engaged, and when the conversation comes around to that she's absolutely indignant that the woman needs to be punished for leaving him. It shows how much she really cares for Steve even if he has to restrain her enthusiasm.

This is a convoluted path they have to follow, and so many people to eliminate as suspects. Surprisingly it's her father's Lawyer that along with the will, has something for Opal that helps bring everything to a head.

So many twists, unbelievable betrayal, and a long-time coming relationship kept me turning the pages to the conclusion.

I really can't wait to see what Dale comes up with next for this group of heroes.

This is book twenty nine in The Heroes For Hire series and it is Steve and Opal’s story. Opal had been kidnapped, beaten, tortured and thrown in the harbour to die only she was rescued in time to save her life and she is now in hiding but needs help if she is to survive another attack if they find her but what she doesn’t know is why it happened and who and what these people want so her mother contacted Levi to ask if they can find Steve and ask him to help them before it is too late. Steve now works with Levi and Ice and when he heard what had happened to Opal he is sent in to help find those responsible and eliminate the threat but first they will need to find out who it is and what they want because at the moment nothing is making any sense. Opal and Steve used to be best friends years ago until life took them in different directions but now the feelings that they used to have for each other is as strong as ever but now they will have to work together and find out who they can trust so they will need to keep there guard up if they are going to solve the problems and get out alive. There are twists and turns along with betrayal, suspense, danger, action, suspicion, mystery, danger, corruption, kidnapping, intrigue, attempted murder, hope, love and some situations that will have you on the edge of your seat while holding your breath wondering what the outcome will be for them all and if Opal and Steve will get the happiness and future that they both want and deserve. Dale Mayer is an amazing author and writer and she certainly knows how to keep her readers attention and coming back to read more of her books and you will definitely not be disappointed.

Ramifications on the Innocent from Corruption
Corruption is running rampant in a small town near Fort Bragg in California. This is where Steve grew up and the person in big trouble is Opal, his old best friend. This is Steve’s first case with the Guardians and he’s been partnered with Reyes an old military buddy. They find Opal is in hiding because of the people who want her dead. They almost succeeded a few days ago by kidnapping, beating her then weighing her down and throwing her into the ocean. She was rescued, just barely.
Turns out, Opal’s father was a very corrupt cop. He was arrested, pleaded guilty and while in jail died suspiciously. Is there more corruption in the police force? Could Cops or druggies or someone else be after Opal? Why just her?
Opal, her mom Ruby and her dad’s old partner Marshal are all in hiding trying to protect Opal. Steve and Reyes believe everyone’s suspect, especially Marshal being that he’s the ex-partner and the guy who saved Opal from drowning. Nothing is easy in this case and when Steve and Opal discover important information left by her father even those closest to her becomes villainous. The really good thing is Steve and Opal realizes they are not just friends but are in love. Lots of mysteries and possible suspects and surprises in this story! I received a free advanced copy of this story from Booksprout and these are my thoughts. Linda

Another brilliant story in Dale Mayer's "Heroes for Hire" series.
When Steve Franklin left the navy he could think of nothing better than working for Levi and Ice, he was already acquainted with some of the team and knew of the work that they did, little did he know that his first mission was to protect someone that he knew, someone who he had been very close to, his teammate was to be Reyes, a fellow ex SEAL who he had worked with before and trusted.
Opel's life had been turned upside down and very nearly ended in the most brutal fashion, her father, the father that she had loved and trusted, the father with whom she had lovely childhood memories was a bent cop, she couldn't believe it but apparently it was true. Opel and her mother were being supported by Marshal, her father's partner in the police force.
Steve and Reyes knew that Opal's life was in danger, they would protect her and with Levi's help get to the bottom of this mess, someone somewhere knew something, were the police involved ? could Marshal be trusted ?
The obvious attraction between Opal and Steve was still there in spades and blossomed as they delved deeper into this mystery, Steve would do anything to protect Opal but who could she trust ?
This is a love story with angst, it covers corruption in high places, greed, kidnapping, deceit and an ending that I didn't see coming. Has Levi's magic worked again ?.

I enjoyed the pace of this book. There was a good amount of mystery, intrigue, suspense, and danger. The book also contained a surprise twist or two.

One thing I would have appreciated some clarity about was Steve and Opal's past. The story clearly stated they were friends and went way back. Did they ever date? Go to high school or college together? Were they neighbors? How did they know each other? It wasn't of major importance to the story, but I would have liked a better understanding of why Opal and Steve were so important to one another.

I didn't particularly care for Ruby. She seemed rude and more than a bit self centered. After she shared her story, I liked her even less. Marshall was sus throughout the book, even when he wasn't, he was.

I would have also liked to have found out more detail about who was behind what happened to Opal. After the entire fiasco played itself out, I wanted to know what happened to the "culprits"? I would have liked more details on the wrap up and what happened further down the road with Steve and Opal.

Even with the lingering questions I had, I thought this was still an entertaining read. It was nice that Steve and Opal were able to connect. I did feel like their story ended rather abruptly.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book received via Booksprout.

Steven and Opal were close friends for many years, but had drifted apart. Opal's father was a cop who turned dirty and got caught, making life miserable for his partner Marshall, his wife Ruby, and Opal. Then Opal was kidnapped and was beaten severely, where they were asking about a stash, but she knew nothing of it. Then they tried to murder her, but she survived. Steve and his partner Reyes were called in to help protect the family and figure out what was going on - which was a lot!

The action kept me on the edge of my seat sometimes, the descriptions were great, and the mystery was absorbing. I liked seeing the relationship between Opal and Steve, it was a nice, friendly relationship with an undertone of slow burn attraction. There was some humor in the banter, which was fun. My favorite was when Opal was angry about something and arguing with Steve, to Reyes, it was "... almost as if seeing an angry butterfly stand up to a huge killer bee." Loved that visual!

I sort of felt that the final exposing of the bad guys was a bit anti-climactic, and I would have liked to have a bit more follow-up with loose ends, like Ruby and Marshall. But overall it was great!

I do recommend this book.

WOW! What an awesome story!! Dale Mayer has created a winner with this mind-boggling, dynamic page-turner. Readers will fall in love with the strong, sensitive and heartwarming main characters. Plus, the complex and absorbing plot will keep everyone glued to their seat. Readers will be spellbound by the story’s non-stop action, riveting suspense and complicated twists and turns.

This story includes a dirty cop who has died in prison without admitting the details of his “work” and some evil villains who will do anything to get a hold of his stash. They even kidnap and torture his daughter to get information. When they realize she knows nothing, they throw her into the ocean to die. She is rescued by her father’s former partner. She has been greatly injured and suffers from PTSD.

Steve is an old friend of Opal and her family. Therefore, he is hired by Opal’s mother to keep her safe. Readers will fall in love with Steve, whose gentleness, sensitivity and compassionate ability go a long way to help Opal cope with the aftermath of her traumatic experience. This gentle, loving man uses his expert training in the military to keep her safe and to help her overcome her severe PTSD.

Readers will be shocked and surprised by the ending!

Steven's Solace is the 30th book in the Heroes for Hires series by Dale Mayer
Steve finds out an old friend has been kidnapped, tortured, and tossed overboard in the habor. Opal and her mother reached out to Levi for help and asked if Steve could come and help figure out what was going on and keep them safe.
Opal survived the kidnapping and torture, but she was sure her life was over when she was tossed overboard in chains with cement shoes. Luckily someone saw what was happening and rescued her. Now she’s in hiding and terrified to leave the house. She isn’t sleeping due to the nightmares, and she is barely eating. The danger isn’t over yet since they have no idea why Opal was kidnapped in the first place or what the kidnappers were looking for. Will Steve be able to keep her safe from an unknown enemy?
I loved this book. The story is original, and the characters are amazing. The chemistry between Steve and Opal is scorching. There is danger and mistrust at every turn. Until they discover who kidnapped Opal no one can be trusted. This is a must read.

A great book all round with a twist I didn't see coming.

I can't believe these books just keep getting better and better. I think Levi needs to change jobs and go into the match asking business. He would make a killing.

Steven is back at his friends and hearing the whole deal of what happened to her. Opal is lucky to be alive and is only because of her father's partner at work. Betrayal, kidnap and trying to solve a puzzle is what everyone is up against. I have to admit that I thought it was the one person who saved her but then it took quite a twist in the tale.

Once her father died, all of the secrets spilled out and the baddies were able to be rounded up. Still a surprise to me when someone close had a problem. It was a really great book. I loved the characters. I also loved Opal's sassyness, especially when she told Steven's partner that she would call his wife and she was on speed dial. A great book all around and I am excited for other upcoming books.

Steve finds out that an old friend of his was kidnapped, tortured and deep-sixed in the harbour and rushes to California to help at the same time that Opal and her mother had asked Levi to send Steve to help them. Opal's kidnappers have not given up on finding something she didn't have and with her in hiding and Steve back in her life a future together is not guaranteed.

I enjoyed this story with the mystery of who was after Opal, why and what it was that they were looking for. It was fascinating to work through the mystery and try to solve it at the same time as them with all of the complications of her mother, her father's old partner or even a potential unknown lover. It was easy to become involved in the story and be swept away with it all. I did find it all ended a little abruptly although it was satisfactory.

Opal is saved from drowning after she was thrown off a boat with cement around her feet. Opal’s mother Ruby doesn’t know who she can trust, so she calls Levi the owner of legendary Securities. Levi knows that Steve is an old friend of Opal, so he sends him, with Reyas as backup, to investigate the kidnapping. When Steve arrives, Opal is in bad shape. She hasn’t eaten or slept since coming home from the hospital. Immediately after seeing Steve, Opal can relax and is even able to fall asleep in Steve’s arms. Opal’s dad was a dirty cop, and his ex-partner Marshal was the person that rescued her. This made him a pretty good suspect, until he was kidnapped by the people who took Opal. With all the books Dale Mayer has written in the series, it amazes me how she can still come up with original plots. I always look forward to the next book.

When Steven learns that Opal, an old friend is in trouble he doesn’t hesitate to go to her to keep her safe and to find out who tried to kill her. Opal is living a nightmare, her dad was a corrupt cop who was sent to jail, killed while there and then she was kidnapped beaten and thrown over the side of a boat to drown and never be found. Now that Steven is back in her life their old friendship and banter starts up again, she also feels safe with him there and trying to find out why she was targeted while keeping her safe. When Opal finally decides to settle her father’s estate, it opens a box of worms and has the two of them trying to outrun the bad guys.
A good read with suspense, surprises, and good characters. I liked these two, no drama, no misunderstandings and Opal wasn’t snarky or moody. I would have liked a clearer ending as to who done it and where the two end up.

My gosh! My heart completely went out to Opal, I can't even imagine the horror of going through something like that let alone managing to survive it. Steve was brilliant, strong, understanding and caring but he also pushed when needed and was forthright. Poor Reyes he got the grotty side of this job. Suspense and some action in a tense and twisted plot from start to finish, just when you think it's all solved and things can calm down so we go off in another direction. Loved it, the romance of being reunited with an old friend and the possibility of more, the bad guys and the question marks over who was trustworthy or not despite actions. Plus a bit of Levi and Ice, plenty here to keep me totally glued to the pages. Fabulous characters and a fairly fast pace I thoroughly enjoyed it. Exciting stuff.

Loved the new twist on this series, book 29 and still a page turner. Steven has flown into Ice and Levis compound to see about becoming a member of their team. While there Levi sends Steven back to his old stomping grounds. Steven grew up with Opal so to find out she was left for dead has his heart pounding and his blood pumping with anger. Reyes is on hand to assist. There is police corruption, family dynamics and plenty of mystery and intrigue. There was a question never really answered to my satisfaction....how was Marshall down by the warehouse at that time - why? Except for that this book covered all the bases - friendship, suspense, intrigue and second chances. Thank you for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #Steven'ssolace #asealsofhonorworld #dalemayer #valleypublishingltd #booksprout

Dealing with the belief that her father’s career as a cop ended in corruption was difficult enough but his death has only increased the danger she has found herself in. With only her mother and her father’s previous partner to assist the threats continue to escalate so they receive help from Levi when he sends Steve and Reyes to investigate and protect.

Steve and Opal have been friends for years however over the years their lives caused them to distance themselves from each other. When he finds out that Opal is in danger there is nothing he wont’ do to find out who is behind it and why before their next attempt is successful, but he didn’t expect to find love along the way.

Steve and Opal take us on an action-packed adventure filled with surprises that will keep you guessing and a love that is undeniable.

Steve jumps right into a new assignment as part of Levi's team after realizing his old friend, Opal, is the one in danger. Opal's life was already upside down after her cop father's disgrace became public, then she was kidnapped. deep-sixed, and should've died if not for Marshal's help. But can Marshal be trusted? Steve is helping to unravel the layers on conspiracy surrounding Opal and will do anything to keep her safe, even if it means he'll have to investigate the people she loves.

Dale Mayer has written another good story with intriguing plot and suspense. Personally, it was a slow read due to the heavy reliance of back & forth dialogue between the characters to build the story with minimal pov. Overall, this is still enjoyable but not my favorite.

This is the 29th book in the Heroes for Hire series by Dale Mayer and what a story. I'm astounded that every book I have read by this author is so very good and intriguing. This one is no exception, and this is Steven and Opal's story. Her life has become one nightmare after another, what with betrayals, kidnapping and being weighed down with cement shoes only to be rescued and survive, who can she trust? Will there be no end to her nightmare? Enter Steven, whilst they haven't seen each other for a long time they immediately trusts him. Now he is here to protect her and keep her safe all the while their attraction keeps on growing. There are many secrets to uncover, betrayal, twists & turns, corruption and greed.
Will they both survive to get their HEA? Will they discover all the secrets?.

Steve’s Solace by Dale Mayer
Heroes for Hire Series Book Twenty-Nine
Steve Franklin met with Levi at the perfect time. He was put on a job immediately, dealing with an old friend of Steve’s that he’d lost contact with years ago. But unfortunately, her father turned out to be a bad cop, and someone kidnapped her and tried to kill her. So Steve and Reyes headed to California to find out what was happening.
Opal was having nightmares and didn’t think they’d ever stop. But she relaxed when her old friend Steve showed up to work on the case. Opal was even able to get some sleep. Now they just had to find the kidnappers so she could continue her life.
It’s hard to know who can be trusted on this case; even those close to Opal seem suspicious. A page-turning story!

Steve & Opal

A tragic start for Opal has you on the edge of your seat trying to piece this puzzle together. Deep-sixed is not a nice way to go, but Opal has the strength and fortitude to fight and survive.

Beaten and bruised, Opal is thrilled Steve comes back into her life at just the right time to protect her. With no one to trust except Levi and Ice, Steve’s employers, and their multitude of resources, Steve and his teammate, Reyes, attempt to find out who attacked her. Keeping Opal’s survival a secret, they dig through the clues to find the answers before she is discovered or put in any more danger. There are many clues leading them around in circles, but nothing to define what the motivation is behind her kidnapping and attempted murder. This family has suffered through tragedy and live with shame and heartbreaking sorrow. Danger surrounds all who are connected to Opal and her mother as well as her deceased father, a disgraced police officer.

This story is full of details that are exciting and full of mystery. As the drama plays out, you will be shocked and bewildered over the turn of events. Suspenseful and exciting right up to the end!

This story is chock full of danger, betrayal, suspense, and romance. Opal's been kidnapped, beaten, and thrown in the ocean to die. But her father's ex-partner saves her - barely. It seems her dirty cop father has something stashed away that others want. But she has no idea what it is or where it might be. Ruby, Opal's mother, contacts Levi to have Steve come and help.

They all know that the danger won't be over until they either find what her father has hidden, or they can convince the bad guys that she doesn't have it. There are so many questions that come up along the way - what is the stash? Is her father's ex-partner Marshal involved? Was her father really a dirty cop? This is a fast-paced read that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

An amazingly series - can be read as a stand-alone but I strongly recommend you read from the beginning with Mason - you won’t regret it! This is Opal and Stevens story. Opal has had a traumatic time and clues lead to a dirty cop - her father. Steven, an old friend, reconnects with her as part of his mission to help solve where the danger is coming from. This will have you on the edge of your seat - the twists and turns will keep you guessing and the betrayals are unexpected. I love also how characters from the series pop in and out which ties in well and makes me want to go back and reread from book 1!

Steven is thinking about joining Levi's team when a call thru Levi takes him back to a small town in northern California where a friend of his (Steven's) has been attacked, beaten, strangled and thrown overboard with cement attached to her shoes. She is miraculously rescued and so the story begins. Creepy, mysterious, charming and a very interesting read as always from this author. Love and honor thrown in for good measure so it's a book I'll read again!.
