Saving Karmen

Rate this book
17-year-old Karmen Brown is a good girl. She's shy, quiet, never been in trouble, and is pretty much a homebody. However, she has been bullied all her life and is fed up with her mother's strict ways. Feeling trapped in her own body, she worries that her teenage years have passed her by.

When Karmen gets caught up in a drama-filled night of fun with her two best friends, Jasmine and Erica, who drag her to a party, she learns that she has a hard time getting her biggest crush, Desmond, to notice her. Or will he?

After being repeatedly humiliated, Karmen’s alter ego, Karma, takes over her life and decides enough is enough. Karma is going to do things her way, even if that means getting her hands dirty. Will Karmen be able to control Karma? Will she fight to get her life back? Or will she learn to accept who she really is? Find out in this exciting thriller filled with drama, secrets, twists, and turns.

Initially, I found this book to be a slow read and to be honest, I almost didn't finish it. While I have no issues with reading Young Adult literature and understand that teenagers will be teenagers, it is not my preference to read about them being involved in gangs and betraying each other. Despite my reservations, I continued reading the book and found myself wondering if Karmen's mom had the same diagnosis as her. The story was filled with so many secrets and unresolved pain.1
