The Gemarine Chronicles Book 1

"Contentment through unity. Protection through peace."

Welcome to Gemarine: utopian home to a select group of Aranthers, Sytheracts and Humans.

You can live a pleasant life with a meaningful job, integrate yourself within a non-judgemental community, participate in no-strings-attached copulation events and nurture your passion.

But is it all just a fickle facade of frivolity? Is something sinister lurking beneath the leadership of Madame Bleu and her Inner Circle?

After emerging from the wreckage of a crashed ship, a Human named Xan befriends a rare creature in the Wilds of Gemarine, forging a bond that sets them on a course across the far-reaching corners of the galaxy.

Lilianna is a Sytheract who doesn't always fit in with the Gemarine way of life. Working in conservation with Xan, she is a quiet achiever, with a heart of gold and eyes to match.

Juniper is a promiscuous Gemarinian with a quick wit and a quicker temper. After losing her arm in a brutal war, she commands a squad with a steely heart and a fierce determination.

After Juniper accepts a rescue mission in a dangerous part of the galaxy, she finds herself face to face with an ancient enemy.

Will Xan and his ragtag crew be able to save her? Or will they uncover a plot that unites the fate of all their former homeworlds?

"Nothing is flawless in a galaxy built from chaos."

If you're after your next sci fi read, this could be for you!

The story follows Xan who was plucked from Earth at a young age to join the Gemarine society. Unfortunately the ship he's on is struck by an enemy and crash lands with him being the only survivor. He is far from the city, is on a foreign planet, but manages to befriend a rare creature and find his way. As he grows up, Xan takes on a role to preserve rare species within the galaxy. He develops trusted relationships with his friends - Juniper, a war hero and Lillian, a fellow researcher. When an old Gemarine enemy emerges wanting to talk with Xan, it puts into question not only the life he's led, but those of Juniper and Lillian. Can this enemy really be trusted?

What a ride this read was! I sat and finished this book in about 5 hours as I was so engaged. I haven't had this type of reading experience for some time - where I just couldn't put the book down. What helped was the short chapters.

I loved all the characters in this book, whether they were the main or side characters. Juniper really stood out for me because she is outspoken, badass and gorgeous. I liked the way she could bring out certain qualities in others.

Definitely don't want to reveal a major spoiler, but the reason Xan being taken from Earth, would have had me questioning my whole existence. I don't know if I was in his position that I would have the same type of resilience. He was placed into a scary unknown situation but took it in his stride. I loved his caring nature in wanting to save any type of animal.

I thought the writing was impeccable and the story flowed so well. Even though from chapter to chapter, it would jump to another timeline, I was never lost and it helped build the history and nature of each character. I enjoyed where the story was being led and what Xan's ultimate purpose was.

If you're also into some spice, there were some fun scenes that are heavily described for your pleasure. It adds to the overall adventure of this book.

Glad to have discovered JP on Tiktok and to have read this amazing story. Now I got to find some time for the sequel.

From indie author JP McDonald comes Beyond Forsaken Worlds, his second novel, and first in his new series The Gemarine Chronicles.

Beyond Forsaken Worlds follows MC Xan, a human who ends up on the planet of Gemarine, befriending a rare creature along his travels as well as some unique and wondrous people who help bring this story to life, juniper, Massey and Lilliana are stand out characters for me.

Through descriptive world building and writing, unlikely friendships, banter, some sugar, spice and everything nice for those of you who enjoy those spicy books scenes 😉 and fast paced action, this is one that will keep you entertained until the end as Xan and his unlikely crew try to navigate themselves and each other through worlds, triumphs, losses and everything in between.

I’d recommend this to those who are fans of books such as the Aurora cycle, sci fi and action packed fantasy and to those who are on the look out for more indie authors who bring something different to the table.

Thanks to JP for giving me the honour of Beta reading this :)

This story has it all; varied and complex characters, stunning scenery, creative world building and a healthy dose of violence, romance and sci fi elements. I was enamoured right away and couldn't put the book down! Thank you to Author J.P. McDonald for providing me with a copy of this book and the next in the series: Beyond the Bounds of Time. I'll be jumping straight in!

Its rare that I immediately connect to the main characters of a book, but the moment that Xan, Juniper and Liliana crossed the pages I was hooked. They're such drastically different personalities who view their lives on the planet of Gemarine in varying ways, but the Author has cleverly ensured that they complement each other exactly as needed to further the story. I won't lie, the 🔥 scenes in the book were unexpected but the perfect way to demonstrate the 'fusion' aspect of Gemarine culture and satisfy a key story line.

This book finished on such an epic cliff hanger and I can't wait to see which direction the Author chooses to go in! I have a guess as to who the secret baddie will be but LOVE that I really have no idea as it's been written so well. Easy 5 star read ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ARC review: Beyond Forsaken Worlds by JP McDonald 🪐

A ragtag crew on a rescue mission that ends up bigger than what they bargained for? Intergalactic chaos bound to ensue? Sign me up. We’ve got space travel, extraterrestrial creatures, distant worlds, spice, action, banter, friendship, heart. What more could you want?

I finished Beyond Forsaken Worlds about a week ago, and let me tell you, my heart is still soaring. I can't stop thinking about this story— which is all at once familiar and unlike anything I've ever read. I'm still riveting over entire chapters and so many things in between them. JP’s writing is truly something to marvel at. I kept going back to reread passages, to relish the lyrical prose, and savour the artfulness of the authors imagery. Swoon. Get your sticky tabs ready.

The humour in BFW is the best. I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed out loud while reading a book. The end of chapter 41 in particular, got me real good. Shout-out to Massey!

Xan, Juniper, and Lilianna are our MC’s. These characters have swiftly become some of my favourite characters ever! They’re extremely well written, human in emotion, and they each have their own individual personality and.. flavour for lack of a better word. I could probably tell their voices apart even if the chapters hadn’t been titled with the POV character’s name. Can’t forget our girl, Qilin. The best creature companion in the entire galaxy! Must protect her at all costs.

Beyond Forsaken Worlds is fun and beautifully written with characters who linger long past the last page. I wish I could go back and read it anew for the first time. I would recommend this to everyone, regardless of whether they enjoy science fiction or not. Take a chance on it. You're in for a ride!

"All lifeforms deserve a certain degree of reverence, and what better way to revere than to save?"

A stunning science fiction novel that seamlessly interweaves themes of eco-consciousness, found family, humour, compelling adventure, and beautiful prose. The planet of Gemarine has its tempting aspects along with deep-set secrets. Following main characters; Xan, Juniper, and Lilianna alongside a diverse crew of misfits that come together to achieve tasks that may have unseen ripples throughout the cosmos.
Xan and Lilianna have a delicate connection to biological conservation and Juniper has enough fierce and stunning personality to match.

McDonald's timing with banter and purple prose sets a rhythm to their writing that feels like a welcome acoustic rock song. The found family dynamic is heartwarming, and the humour injects levity into the otherwise dire situations. They may be travelling through space, but their relationships are grounded in reality, with a Guardians of the Galaxy dynamic.

"At least when darkness flows around us all, it's lessened by the light of humour."

With vivid and imaginative worldbuilding sprinkled in, the reader is made to feel present with the characters in a futuristic environment. The queer-normative society and diversity of characters, including an animal sidekick with sentience and unconditional love, bring forward a welcoming feel with a focus truly on the story itself. Plus, the queer rep is handled in a way that feels natural and authentic.

And lemme tell you, the intergalactic shenanigans, well...let's just say - they can't always worm their way out them. Hoping to put in my application to be stationed aboard the Attenborough, promptly.

So buckle up and get ready for an adventure that's out of this world! I cannot recommend it enough, and I hope you give it a try. Meanwhile, I am diving right into book 2 today!

“We take on this responsibility, not because we caused it, but because we have the means, the power, the will to fix things. The sins of our ancestors can be absolved if we invest in a fortuitous future for all.”

Beyond Forsaken Worlds is a fast-paced, sci-fi adventure set in the vivid world of Gemarine. There’s comedic banter abound, but underneath the humor there are questions surrounding the consequences of humanity’s (et al) relationship with the world around them and what it means to experience connections with others in whatever way you desire.

The world of Gemarine will call to you with its free-minded code of ethics. Hetero/mononormativity, where? I adored this theme throughout BFW. All species on Gemarine are brought up to enjoy and respect each other without the expectation of attachment. It’s an orgy free for all. Woodstock circa 118. Jokes aside, it was refreshing to read about a world as uninhibited as ours is stifled.

The characters have my whole heart, and there’s a little something for everyone in each one. Their dialogue, mannerisms, and complex relationship dynamics bring a high level of authenticity.

Juniper is a new favorite FMC. She’s unabashedly honest, hilariously curt, yet devastatingly loyal to those she cares about. Did I mention she has a whole robotic arm? I loved her hard and fast nature, and I laughed at her lines the most.

“I’ll fucking waste the lot of them and start my own army and the code will be: fuck codes, do what you want.” (I mean, could she get anymore idgaf?)

Xan is a conservationist in occupation and at heart. He’s a strong and fair leader with an eye for revenge. Speaking of eyes, he’s easy on them.

Lilianna. Sweet Lili. Our good girl and beating heart of this trio. She believes in soulmates but can’t deny the bond she has with both Xan and Juniper. Her character arc was handled so gracefully, and I’m most excited for her in book 2.

Beyond Forsaken Worlds has beautiful writing for word lovers, characters that stick in your brain like an old friend, laugh out loud humor, and the endearing pursuit for a better world all along side the most lovable, four-pawed sidekick (stealer of the show, really). I can’t wait to see where the sequel takes us!

Firstly, thank you so much to JP for allowing me the absolute pleasure of reading the ARC for BFW!

If you asked me to sum up my thoughts on BFW in one sentence, I’d describe it as: talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before.

For those who know me, you know I’m not a big sci-fi reader. It’s not because I have anything against the genre, but just that I’ve never really been drawn to sci-fi books. But let me tell you… THIS book!!! 😙🤌

JP’s done it again. He’s crafted a totally unique and captivating world, inhabited by some pretty badass characters — and creatures! The world-building was — wait for it — out of this world (forgive me). The landscapes JP crafted were magnificent and so vivid. Part of this is due to his absolutely stunning and lyrical prose, which leads to the creation of such rich and lively characters and landscapes.

Another thing I wanted to comment on was JP’s characters. This man knows how to write his characters. They’re unmatched. Each character has a distinct voice and personality which really allows you to form a connection to them. These aren’t just names on a page. These characters feel real and relatable, allowing you to easily root for them, despite their flaws. And that’s another thing I love about JP’s characters: they’re not perfect. They’re flawed. They’re human (well, not all of them are, but you get what I mean). Xan, Juniper, Lilianna, Qilin… it was hard to choose a favourite — who am I kidding it wasn’t, Qilin’s my favourite and has been since the moment she was introduced — but there is a character there for every type of reader.

I personally haven’t read a novel like this. BFW is unlike the usual books you find floating around on bookstagram, and this makes it all the more memorable! Come join in on this incredible world — you won’t regret it.

P.S. I NEED BOOK 2 ASAP BECAUSE THAT ENDING… BRUH 🫠

It’s official. JP McDonald is my favourite Aussie Sci Fi writer!

This is the second book I’ve read from him and WOW I’m in love(The invisible tether was my first and well worth the read). I am so glad to be back to JPs writing style and banter! He is also so intelligent and it shows through his writing. Well… he better be because he certainly sounds it!

I’m officially in my Sci-fi era and have invited myself to the
troupe of misfit!!

This story involved kick ass characters who are all wildly different and I love the diversity of them. They each bring something different and the mystery of what’s going on will keep you on your toes. You will spend the book questioning, wondering and even reflecting on our own current world. It also makes you wonder how important can one person be in the scope of the world.

I also adore the story of a being and their creature. It was like a relationship between a man and dog- sci fi addition. It’s beautiful to follow and I can’t wait to learn more about our fury friend. The characters found family and care for each other is also delightful. There is also some sneaky spice 🌶️

The world that is built and the story is absolutely divine and I cannot wait for more!

The only bit that was confusing sometimes was the jumping in time and places between chapters! So just be aware of the changes or you will confuse yourself 🤣

Also great look at some big issues we face in the real world. I love the work in of these issues in this fantasy sci fi! Also did someone say ALLL ABOARD THE ATTENBOROUGH

As usual my reviews are rarely much about the book plot but just about how much I loved it or disliked it. This by far fell on the shelf of loved it.

ALSO Fusion, yes, let’s go, when you read the book you’ll get it. So go read it and come back for book two with me!

The prose in this book is just so beautiful.. its just so Lyrical and .... just wow. Makes me a tad speechless if im being honest.

This book has definitely stolen a piece of my heart, many times I've stopped and gone back to reread one of the hundred or so notes ive saved of such beautifully written moments, and ah God the banter between the characters.. love it!

This book has everything you can only hope for, Space travel, exciting alien worlds, found family, badass alien animal companion, MCs that are super relateable (im definitely a lilianna fan) 😊 a plot that leaves you unable to put the book down, and then there's the spice... 😏🔥
(Fusion is definitely one of my new fantasies 😋)

Beyond Forsaken Worlds is fast paced, action packed, and full of heart ❤️

Cannot recommend this book more.. JP you have outdone yourself... 👏👏🙌 5 stars!
Looking forward to the sequel, which I have a feeling is probably going to leave me emotionally damaged 🥴
Can't wait! 😆😊

What firstly stands out about JP McDonald's sci-fi writing is his very lyrical style. Not something you usually associate with this genre, but adds that milky-way immense universe deep and meaningful element to the story.
It gives that sense of beauty and wonder amongst the hi-tech gadgets and crafts of the world in which these characters live. A sense of appreciation of the nature that our busy lives quite often ignore.
There are so many quote-worthy passages in this book, get your highlighters or sticky notes ready.

The premise the author has set up in this first book of the series is as unique as his characters. The concept of our hero being a champion for endangered species across the universe as opposed to a military /destroy them all and save the world type is not only different but very relatable. Not that the story is void of action, there are plenty of nail-biting situations and the occasional violent outburst. As well as a quite a bit of spice.

Our three main characters are fabulously diverse and present three intriguing stories that come together just as perfectly as the trio work together towards their goal. Juniper is a bad-ass, Xan the reluctant hero and Lilianna the good girl of the trio, each has their own strengths to bring to the mission and a different point of view.

Of course the favorite character of all is Qilin. Her story is full of mystery and there is so much more to come in the future. Phineas is another no-human type character that is quite appealing despite his matter-of-fact straightforward and literal manner.

I love the mentions of today's everyday items and the idea that in this Gemarinian world they are antique and out-dated. This is another great characteristic of this author, his ability to make the everyday things seem wondrous and those items that we feel are important almost mundane.
I was privileged to have been a Beta reader of this book and I keen to get my copy of the finished product. If you are not sure if you like sci-fi and want to give it a go, you can't go wrong with Beyond Forsaken Worlds. After reading this you will be hooked.

Plot: Xan, Juniper, and Lilianna are sent on a mission to discover if worlds are being destroyed to maintain their planet. Xan searches worlds for creatures going extinct and brings them back to Gemarine to save them, along with Lilianna a Sytheract. Juniper is Xan's best friend and warrior supreme. Gemarine an utopian world where passions are explored.

Thoughts: I liked how this is a spicy read but in space. Not many space stories include romance or anything in the spicy category. Xan and Juniper are fans of Fusion basically a sex club, where everyone goes to let loose. Lilianna is not so much a fan, as her beliefs fall more toward love than casual sex. I really like Lilianna and how she struggles with her desires for Xan and her beliefs to find a lifelong partner. Xan is a great character as well, although he is almost too perfect, he is a protector and is passionate about the things he loves. Although he does have a violent streak which is at odds but not with the rest of his temperament. Juniper at this point seems to be a typical badass character, nothing wrong with that, but nothing too surprising in her either.
The story is really good, the crew is sent off to find out what happened to their home worlds, and to change things if possible. It took a bit of getting used to, to know what time period you were reading as the story jumps from past to present a bit, but once the flow is found it wasn't hard. I liked how that was used to show us the building of the relationships, especially between Lilianna and Xan, and how Lilianna views him. The spice in the book was just enough to leave you wanting more, but not thrown in just because I really hate stories that are all spice and have no plot. This is not the case here. The spice just amplifies certain aspects of each character and the world they live in.
Can't wait to read more of their adventures!

“Perfection is something we seek too frequently, and it is a cloud that obfuscates our ability to accept the self. It pushes us to be something we’re not, to raise expectations so we’re always striving but never appreciating what we have accomplished. I am not that. I am flawed and I accept this. In fact, I accept you for your flaws and I have never, ever judged you.” @jpmcdonaldwrites

Welcome to Gemarine - somewhere in a Galaxy Far Far Away from Earth, where Xan is originally from. Gemarine where you have freedom of choice, no judgement, societal standards are non existent and you can be as promiscuous and as flawed as you want. Just ask Juniper who uses sex as a release from life. Sounds too good to be true right? No wonder Lilianna is struggling to completely let herself go.

Told from multiple perspectives over different time periods. With detailed world building. Most importantly all the quotes - the times you want to pause, ponder and write down a quote.

From this one I took away the story of friendship. Xan, Juniper and Lilianna were so uniquely different from each other. Yet, a duo they complimented each other. "United, they each held something special. It was as if they fit like carbon and hydrogen atoms, and when fused together they created a diamond; faceted, sparkling light, exuding beauty. Each quality they lacked as an individual was made up for by the collective’s strengths."

When you find that type of friendship is there anything you wouldn't do for each other? "When a cherished friendship makes one feel whole, surrendering a fraction of oneself is no sacrifice at all."

Let's not also forget Qilin and the bond she has with Xan. This explores the beautiful relationship between humans and animals. A key theme throughout Beyond Forsaken Worlds.

“Fate is an unknown force in our lives, whether it has weight that stifles or whether it gives us purpose that infuses the soul.”

When Xan arrives on the utopian planet of Gemarine, he doesn’t get the welcome he was expecting. Instead his spacecraft is attacked and he is left to fend for himself in the Wilds as he makes his way to the city. Along the way he befriends a dog/cat like companion. The two have been inseparable since.

Years later, Xan has adapted to life in the utopian city. But everything he thought he knew about Madame Bleu and her inner circle is questioned when his friend Juniper is kidnapped…

JP’s writing is beautifully descriptive, with a lyrical prose and loaded with similes and metaphors. It paints a vivid image of the world, immersing readers in this fictional land. The story jumps around POV and timelines often, I found it hard to follow at times and often wished I was reading a physical copy instead of the e-book (so I could flick back to the start of a chapter and check what timeline we were in or where we were in that moment). There’s nothing wrong with that, but something to consider - especially for those who don’t read a lot of science fiction or often read with young noisemakers in the room.

I loved Lilianna’s arc. Seeing her open up with her feelings and sexuality, and watching her confidence grow was uplifting. She learns a lot about herself and I hope that continues through book 2.

NB: this book is 18+ with multiple sex scenes (with multiple players), and plenty of crude language.

——
Thank you JP for the review copy of this book, and for encouraging me to read beyond my usual genres.

Probably the single best thing about being a Bookstagrammer, is finding indie authors! Seconded by receiving ARC’s and having the privilege of being able to read their work before the general public.

I just finished reading Beyond Forsaken Worlds by @jpmcdonaldwrites and I have so many thoughts, I’ll try and share a few!

- The characters! Oh man! Qilin (a dog type pet creature that is so MUCH more) stole my heart from the beginning and if ANYTHING happens to her I WILL REVOLT.
Juniper is the kind of woman I’d love to be, badass, funny, sarcastic, hot AF and confident. She almost gives me Amren vibes from ACOTAR.
I could find good things about all the characters, even though they’re all flawed I love them all.

- The plot… well it was NEW. It felt like I hadn’t read it before; and that’s rare these days. It was fast paced, exciting and had just enough spice to keep me happy.

- Sci fi isn’t generally my go to genre because I find I can get a little lost in the world building and the science stuff… (I mean, I’m an autistic high school drop out friends - I fully admit to not being the sharpest tool in the box) but I loved that BFW somehow managed to go light on the world building and technical stuff, but still gave me all the information I needed to feel engrossed in the incredible world JP created.

- The writing was such a pleasure, it was actually really beautifully written; almost lyrical. But at the same time, it has these hilarious one liners that would pop up out of nowhere and make me laugh out loud. Some, was just so Aussie I loved it.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book and being in this world of space travel, extinction and intrigue. I will definitely continue reading The Gemarine Chronicles and definitely think if you’re into sci fi books then you should do yourself a solid and grab a copy.

Beyond forsaken worlds is an action packed, page turning sexy sci-fi. Humorous most pages, little gross others… The story immediately grasps onto you and easily leads you through the story timeline jumping chapter to chapter. Buckle up though. There is a bit of modern space spice, some noteworthy wisdom conveniently written in italics sprinkled throughout, AND a pretty awesome majestic creature that reminds me of my cat (my favorite character, Qilin, she was the reason I kept reading, tbh). Not your typical read and, I admit, I skipped an entire chapter that wasn’t for me. But overall, I have to rate this well because the writing style was full of zest, flow, sassy humor, rich character development, and had an adventurous overarching story that I hope continues. The execution was dazzling, leaving readers frustrated at the end.

This book is has a great storyline and I read it in two days. The characters are a bunch of totally different people whose relationships were interesting and complex. The alien pet companion was the best though. It has more to it than it shows.
The writing was in parts very lyrical which I think fitted the story. Even though the language of the characters is in contrast very profane, that fits the story as well.
Most intriguing was the political backstory and the quest that only crystallises at the very end of the book. I’ll definitely read book two and recommend this one.

I quickly became invested in the characters of this story. They’re all different and I love the dynamic of their relationships. Each time I picked up the book, I was left wanting to know what happens next. I needed a cold shower after chapter 34 🔥😂. The ending of the book has left me needing more and I can’t wait for the next one!

What a fun, wild read.
After his roller-coaster like debut, The Invisible Tether, I was excited to sink into Beyond Forsaken Worlds. With his trademark lyrical, descriptive prose and bantering characters, J.P. did not disappoint.
If you're a lover of space operas, found families, graphic action scenes and a bit of spice, this might just be the book for you. The full cast of characters is colourful, and everyone brings something different to the story. Their mission is also one of dire need, although this first novel is mainly just the set up for what I am sure is going to be a whole heap of chaos to come. I'm very much looking forward to more of their adventure, and more of Xan, Juniper, and Liliana.

What an amazing way to start a series, get us hooked and then drop us off the deep end into the abyss of cliffhangers...

World building ✔
Spice ✔
Cute alien pet ✔ (In the it will turn you to ash way)
Aliens✔ (But like Star Trek, humans can breed with them)
Bad assery ✔ (Juniper, need I say more)

The MC is a human transplant from Earth whose mantra "The path is true if it is walked with empathetic footsteps" says all you need to know about how he chose to be the way he is. But don't let his love for all living things big and small fool you this man can kick ass and take names later just as well as Jackie Chan just with lots more gore.
There are two MFCs and both serve their purpose wonderfully in this trio of awesome. You have the bad ass who lives life straight to the point, she's crass, promiscuous, and oh so zero fucks given who wouldn't be if they live by the mantra "When a part of you dies, another is forged". Then you have the quiet, shy, and in love with her boss but is afraid to say type. She's just as passionate about conservation as as her boss. It takes a little bit to warm to her because she seems like she has no life outside of her job and trying to please her boss, hang in there though your in for a surprise when she finally stops hiding.
The whole place is made for fun but at what cost?? This utopia has secrets and only the exiles are willing to speak up but it's kind of hard to speak when you're exiled. So what do you do...well kidnap, torture and kill that's what.

Seriously this is a book I couldn't recommend more. I can't wait for the second book!!!

This is one wild read, and it's full of banter.

Whilst this is my first JP book, I definitely did enjoy the ride this one took me on!

This is one of the best written books I've read in a while! Juniper is my new book girlfriend. The author has a great writing voice to the point the whole novel was painted inside my mind. The story flowed well and kept me turning the page. Bravo. Will definitely read more by this author.

Keep your eyes peeled for the release of this one and sprint to your closest book store (or amazon) to get your copy. I will definitely be adding a physical copy to my own shelves!!!

Who doesn’t love a book that starts out with a cute little creature being rescued?
Qilin, the Mika Tikaani, is a spectacular creature. I want to meet her and give her a big pat.

Xan, the King of the Wilds, runs a bio space focused on documenting and conserving endangered creatures. I’m an animal lover, so needless to say, this aspect of the book really pleased me and helped me to bond with his character. I wish there were more people like Xan and Lilianna in the world. It would be a much better place.

Lilianna is a sweet, innocent, and wholesome character with a good set of morals.
She’s loyal to those she loves, however, as an unfortunate result, she needs to break the rules and step out of her comfort zone to ensure the safety of her friends.
She’s my favorite character by far.

Jupiner is an interesting character with a lot of spunk, however, she’s got a potty mouth and constantly wants to get into everyone’s pants - like a dog on heat. This being said, I admire her strength and ferocity. She’s a fighter and she doesn’t back down. I also think her exohand sounds pretty cool.

These three characters make for an interesting trio and there’s a lot of amusing banter to be had.
Massy and Ryker, two secondary characters, both keep the story interesting too, although I’m not sure that I trust Ryker.

I thoroughly enjoyed Beyond Forsaken Worlds. JP’s style of writing is lyrical and paints a vivid picture of the epic story he’s created.

While I’m all good with polygamy and threesomes, my only personal criticism (and perhaps I’m just being a prude here) is I would have preferred the sex scenes to be less pornographic.
However, going by the Germarine beliefs when it comes to sex, I guess it makes perfect sense why they were written this way.
BTW, Jupiner, call my girl Lilianna a “slut” again and I will slap you!

This is a captivating sci-fi with an alternating timeline and many layers.

No spoilers ahead
And a thank you for the author for this ARC
Personally, SciFi outerspace settings are not my thing, as I struggle to umderstand the world building and new planets
However this was somehow easy to follow
It started off slow like any other world building with lots of description but soon took off with the action and sequence of events
I usually start any Indie author with the 2 star benchmark but didnt have to here
The plot, the characters and the writing were on point
My issue was with many descriptive words. I found them hard and some I even had to find online. Most of these words are not common
Also, i did not like that it almost had a love triangle, even though the writer said it is not and it wasnt
Still, it gave me this vibe

ALL IN ALL VERY GOOD BOOK

★★★½

There are just some days that you're keen to explore something completely different and I thought this book sounds really interesting. I mean, 3 different races living in harmony on a far off planet?! Where you could be who you want to be, be with you want to be with and no judgement!? Sounds like the place to be! Or is it...

There are 3 main protagonists in this novel: Xan, a human whose passion is that of conservation, Lilliana, a Sytheract who works with Xan but dreams of her own lost culture of soul bonding, and Juniper, sexy kick-ass Gemarinian soldier. Xan's legendary status appears to still draw eyes to his capability to solve problems and Lilliana & Juniper are drawn to him and there we have a trio who will right all the wrongs. To be honest, I love the soulmate trope so I was truly very sad for Lilliana and like her, I found this hard to accept!

As with all multiple POVs, it was a struggle to get it all straight in my head at the beginning. And compounding on top of that is also multiple timelines as we were given flashbacks of the past which basically fills readers in on the characters' backgrounds. I was just so confused. You really have to pay attention to the chapter headers for this read. I managed to push through that and finish the read however there were just a couple of things that bothered me. Mainly the many "decapitations" and a couple of issues that protags had which were resolved too fast, in my opinion, that it felt like a brush off, "yep, that's done. let's get on with the story" kinda feel.

Overall, Gemarine was a very dreamily interesting setting with a lot of hidden secrets. I mostly liked the read but it didn't quite do it for me. Check this one out for yourself as you might love it but do pay attention to the trigger warnings below.

⚠️ Depictions of, and references to death, recollections of war, extreme violence, mild gore, trauma, abuse, torture, graphic sex scenes, kink scenes, substance abuse, adult language, and manipulation.

Thanks to the author for gifting me with an eARC copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Firstly, thanks JP for the chance to read this ARC. I look forward to reading Book 2 of the Gemarine series!

If you are looking for a spicy, action-packed novel with space exploration, new planets, new creatures, and a glimpse into a world very different from our own, then this is the book for you. I, personally, have always been a fan of all things space, and the vivid imagery and attention to detail of each individual world really makes you feel like you’re exploring the world and creatures with the crew, not just as an observer. You become fully immersed in the landscape, the dangers, the raw emotion. JP does not only an excellent job at world building, but also pays close attention to the fictional prose, making the writing itself not only flow, but he adds eloquence.

The story mainly follows three characters: Xan, Lilianna, and Juniper. Xan is your strong human hero who has a soft spot for creatures of other worlds. Juniper is a head-strong Aranther, one of the best fighters in Germaine, and loves being promiscuous. Lilianna is your girl-next-door, monogamous, tender Sytheract, who prefers love and peace. Together they bond, fight, and work towards learning what means most to them and what is worth fighting and making sacrifices for.

I highly recommend reading this book if you are wanting an escape from this world and a chance to experience something different.

Trigger warning: This book contains a lot of action, graphic sex scenes, vulgarity, LGBTQ+ relationships, and gore.

This book was really fun, and I mean that as in I really looked forward to sitting down and picking it up each day. Getting lost in the world of Gemarine was therapeutic for my soul.

I loved, loved, loved the humour in it, it’s so nice to read a book and be able to have a giggle out loud every now and then. It’s also so fun to read something that has lots of swearing - love that. Definitely a bit of me.

The characters were well fleshed out and felt very real. The relationships between the characters added an extra layer to an already interesting storyline and I personally thought the best bit was seeing the different POV’s for the same situations. I thought seeing the different perspectives play out was v interesting and a huge highlight for me.

All in all, if you are looking for something totally unique with an amazing world (and amazing spice) then this one is for you.

I’m very excited to read the second book and can’t wait to see where it takes us!!!

"Beyond Forsaken Worlds" by JP McDonald is book #1 in The Gemarine Chronicles.

"Contentment through unity, peace through protection."
In a utopian society... sounds more like a dystopian one, if you ask me...😏
As a biologist, I was captivated by this book from the beginning, the dedication being this: "For the budding biologists, naturalists and conservationists who give a voice to the voiceless..."

Xan, a young teen, has to leave Earth, so others could thrive, or so he's been told. He is taken to Gemarine, where three superior species lived (Humans, Sytheracts and Aranthers), but the ship that was taking him there was attacked and he was left alone in the Wilds, from where no one has ever escaped. There, he saves Qilin (she saves him actually!), a little feline-like alien creature with pointy ears and with great powers. She's the epitome of cuteness and loyalty.
They escape the Wilds and arrive to Topaz City, where Xan is welcomed as the King of the Wilds.
He befriends Juniper, also a Human, who teaches him to fight.
Fast foward a couple years, the other MFC enters: Lilianna a young beautiful Sytheract and she is placed in Xan's team of Xeno-biologists, which save endangered species driven to the brink of extinction.
Soon, they learn a secret and embark on a mission to save the Universe.

Will they change something that they have achieved so far, for an alternative time and for the Greater Good?

Thoughts:

✨Juniper is a sassy, confident, a true leader and warrioress.
✨I identified myself a lot with Lilianna, a people pleaser, a heart of gold, she sees only the good in people. She's head over heels over Xan, but also she's very fond of Juniper. My heart aches for her and the love she has for Xan. I hope in the next book she'll be more assertive!
✨I utterly hate the villain!
✨The romance book reader in me really enjoyed the Fusion Chapter and Chapter #34.
✨I also enjoyed the humour, the witty banter and the innuendos. 🤭
✨The lyrical style of the author's writing made the story so real!

PS: Fusion sounds delighful! 😜😜😜 We should thow a party there!

"The path is true if it is walked with empathic footsteps."
"All lifeform deserve a certain degree of reverence and what better way to revere than to save?"

Can't wait to start the sequel, "Beyond the Bounds of Time" 🤗🌠
