Second Chances

Rate this book
With his dark eyes, strong physique, and easy-going attitude, Jack Seymour fills Emma’s teenage dreams. He is everything she’s ever wanted. But can he be attracted to a scruffy schoolgirl like her?

Apparently not.

Eighteen years later, Emma finds herself unexpectedly on the doorstep of Jack Seymour’s small dairy farm. Homeless and jobless, she accepts his offer of a lodge in exchange for milking the cows and seeks sanctuary amongst the rolling hills of the peaceful Cotswold countryside while trying to rebuild her life.

As her heart starts to heal and the long summer days encourage her to bloom, she soon attracts the attention of the handsome village squire and uncovers deep ancestral secrets that could tear hearts and lives apart.

Finding herself in the middle of family feuds, Emma wonders if she can find happiness within the walls of an affluent country hall, or will her heart be tempted to discover if second chances really do exist?

Is it Jack or is it Josh? Or is it silly ol' who is so up himself? Which one is Emma going to choose?

Man, this was a lol book that, had me holding my sides with laughter, especially with the bath and spider scene, which apparently is for real.

We have three men, but not on a boat, more in a rural farming area, and one lady who was running from something, yet ended up in deep doo doos. Speaking of doo doos, we have cows. They give us milk right? Well there are plenty of mishaps regarding milking that Emma struggles with and we end up wondering will she get it right. What comes after cows? Pigs of course and there is a cute little piglet called Pickles, I don't know why, but I was seeing chow chow relish at the time, and then realised that I had the wrong culture and recalibrated my mind to Branston Pickle, which I dearly miss, all which made me quite hungry and remembered a time that I was a fan of pickled onions (which I was given as a Christmas present once). Speaking of food, I was particularly drawn towards oat biscuits in this story, which reminded me I needed to get rid of some oats that's been in our cupboard for like ages, so oat biscuits it was decided.

Cock-a-doodle-doo, what is it do you think? Whatever it is, it will wake you up occasionally in this story, no name given to this one.

I want to thank Crimson Cloak Publishing for gifting me this ebook which is a delightful insight of the Cotswolds countryside.

Awarding Louise Mercer, the author, a well earned 5 star rating on a perfect feel good HEA book.

Much like Louise's first book, this novel centres on a will-they won't-they relationship and a flurry of side-stories from a cast of well-realised small-village characters. Where this book differs is in the intensity of that central relationship; every page is filled with a very real tension, there's passion and frustration throughout. These are fully fleshed out protagonists, with meat on their bones and blood in their veins.

Don't get me wrong, this is still a fun and light-hearted book at heart. There's as much written about farmyard mishaps, cupcakes, and ditzy dates as ever. But by the end, I could've sworn I'd lived a part of this myself.

I thoroughly loved this book. After Louise Mercer’s first book, If Only You Knew, I was looking forward to Second Chances and was not disappointed.

It has all the good things I expected. The setting in the Cotswold countryside is lovely. The book is well-written, and the characters well-rounded. It has a handsome hero, good friends, and a handsome village squire.

But Emma finds herself in the middle of family feuds and she wonders if she will find happiness here.

Do second chances really exist?

Please read this delightful book to find out. A highly recommended 5 Stars from me.
