Lieutenant Serenity "Siti" Kassis has built a name for herself and the beginning of a career with the Colonial Explorer Corps. But after five years on active duty, she's assigned to a new mission: the return to Darenti.
Over a hundred years ago, her father discovered the first intelligent life in the galaxy, becoming the Hero of Darenti Four. Siti has lived in his shadow all her life, and now she's forced to follow in his footstep once again.
But this time she's on her own. After being separated from her team, Siti must decide if she can trust the Darenti--and figure out what their goal is. Because if she doesn't, they could unleash a terrifying menace on the unsuspecting human race.
Author of the Colonial Exploration Corps, Space Janitor, Recycled World, and Krimson Empire series.
I grew up in the US Pacific Northwest, and after twenty years roaming the country with the US Air Force, I'm back. I have a spouse, three kids, and a dog named Pippin.
I've been an IT guy, a choir director, an executive assistant, a stay-at-home mom, a college instructor, and that lady at the information booth in a tourist town. But writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true; stuff I'm glad isn't true.
When I'm not writing, I like to knit, read, bake, and ski. I also love to travel.
This is the fourth book in The Colonial Explorer Corps series. It takes place in the same universe as the author’s Space Janitor and Recycled World series.
The story, as the title indicates, takes place on Darenti, where we get to find out Siti’s father’s experience on the planet over a hundred years earlier.
The author works a lot of detail into the story without bogging it down. The story has good pacing. The main characters, including one little sair-glider were developed further in this book.
This book was a fun and enjoyable read, even though it did have moments of sadness near the end. I did enjoy the very ending however and hope that the author will consider writing another book in this series. I enjoyed the book which I received as an ARC.
Siti, a member of the explorer corps and daughter of the Hero of Darenti, goes on a mission to the planet and makes contact with the aliens. However, their form of existence comes as a shock. The people of this planet aren’t what they seem, and what starts out as a clearcut mission becomes something else entirely. Lives are at stake, and it’s up to Siti and her friends to make things right. Detailed world-building, engaging characters and an interesting plot keep the pace moving.
Loved the book it's an emotional read as secrets are revealed and old friends lost but hey we do get a new character in the end so an all over amazing book, will say you don't need to read the Darenti Incrogruity but that is a good read too
Wow, just wow. I need to go back to some of the previous books these characters were in and downgrade the ratings a bit, or 5 stars will become some meaningless thing like a participation trophy. I guess I just need to stop reading these books because every time I think this one is pretty good, and when I read the next one, I think back and wonder how I could have thought that when compared to this one.
I did make a huge mistake on this book though. I got my ARC to read a couple weeks ago, and got busy with other stuff, (Disclaimer: I do feel bad that I didn't get this review out on the release day, but that is the extent of any coercion I got in exchange for the ARC, and even that is self inflicted.) Grabbed a bunch of that Kindle Vella stuff while they were giving it away free for a week, and just didn't feel like reading for a few days. Now I wish I had just dropped everything else and read this first, in a completely non-stop and bingey way. I think I could have done it without more than a meal break and a bathroom break or two if I had planned for it.
OK, back to the book with no spoilers here. Liam the little furry pet has more to do in this book than you might normally expect. I got that hint from the author shortly after the last book Siti (main character) was in, and I think that was a bit of an understatement. But I also once said Liam reminded me of another character in a series of books by another author, and while a bit different in some ways, it was also right on the money in many others. (I'd tell you the character, series, and author, but then I couldn't claim to not be giving spoilers.)
In any case, the characters are all well developed, and have grown and matured a bit in their lives, and have once again improved in the story. Normally at this point, I would be pulling out the problems I had where something just didn't seem right with the way the characters acted or the plot progressed, but this time I get a slight feeling that something might have been able to be improved somewhere, but I have no idea what it would be or why.
So to wrap this all up, fun story, great world building, good characters, and well written. Not that I got a degree in English or anything, very far from it, so I could very well be technically wrong in every statement I've made, but I don't think so. And if I had gotten it all wrong, I wouldn't care anyway! (To the author I can only say "Hurry up and write that next one, it's not like I have a hundred years to waste waiting for it or anything!")
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) in exchange for a review. My opinions of the book are not affected by the fact that I didn’t pay anything for the book. It probably made me more critical.
The Darenti Paradox is book 4 of the Colonial Explorer Corps series by Julia Huni. That series is also tied into the Recycled World series. Very neatly, add. A lifetime before the beginning of The Darenti Paradox the heroine’s father was the leader of a team that discovered the first intelligent life in the galaxy. Perfect setup for the heroine, Lieutenant Serenity “Siti” Kasis of the Colonial Explorer Corps, to have all kinds of issues with her life and comparisons between herself and her dad. She has her ups and downs but is up to the task. She handles life well.
That is not to say she has everything in hand. It is not a neat nor an easy life. But, it is quite interesting, and her friends, some of whom were introduced in the Recycled World series, lend a spice to her adventures that couldn’t be better.
What is it about Siti? How does she and her friendly pet Liam always come out of tough situations ahead of the odds? Sometimes that little fur ball seems to be so exceptional that eyebrows are raised when he helps save the day.
And Lee, the crooked Admiral’s son? How does he play into all this? Is it revenge, hate, or loathing? All of the above? After all, Siti was largely responsible for his mother going to jail. He quit the Colonial Explorer Corps to get away from all that, but here he is, again, bumping into Siti at inconvenient and suspicious times. Interesting.
The people of Darenti Four are not what they seem. Just what DO they seem? The longer Siti stays on the planet the more, and less, she understands them. And who is the Lei-hawm? He was Siti’s father’s main contact on the planet a hundred and seven years earlier, but what is he now? In the end, it is “Dust to Dust.” And a new joy.
The leader of Darenti becomes interested in space travel and hides her special talents - 4 stars
When all you know is your world and explorers from other worlds come to visit, interest is sparked for doing some galactic travel and possibly some nefarious control of others as well. The leader of Darenti 4 has a personal interest in visiting other worlds. She manages to keep her special skills from being detected. Once the nature of the special skills becomes known, there is a reluctance to let the Darenti natives leave their home planet.
After 100 years of interacting, it was possible for the Darenti natives ("enti") to continue to fool the humans to a considerable degree. While the humans have not realized the Darenti's native skills, a group of humans who have to come to Darenti 4 to negotiate a treaty make some surprising observations.
The main characters include a sair glider who can transform his appearance and Siri Kassis, the daughter of the well-respected Nathanier Kassis, Vice Admiral, and a few of Siri's classmates.
The adventures include spying, making friends with the natives, and planning the overthrow of the current top politician. Pooling the strengths of Siri's explorer school classmates is essential for the plot to jell. I found the story to be a little slow at times but managed to keep my interest in exploring new worlds, no matter how unusual the otherworld's individuals turned out to be.
Having lived in the shadow of a famous father, Siti is hoping having been selected as one of those going to Darenti to decide if they are ready to be accepted into the galactic world, she will be judged by her own abilities. She and her little sugar glider pet have already been part of teams that handled other crisis, and she is looking forward to this opportunity that doesn't really involved one. Well, at least, not to her knowledge, but of course where would the story be, if not for complications? And Julia Huni manages to pile them on-can we ever truly know and understand those of other cultures/planets/abilities? Just relationships between Siti and those involved in this trip is full of complications and past failures. Then a situation brought on by Siti's impulsive behavior throws wide open an amazing but also slightly horrifying new door. Don't miss joining her and her friends, as they respond to this challenge. I was thankful for a free look at an early version of the book as one of this author's ARC readers. There were no strings attached, other than I was asked to write an honest review. This is it-if you like well-written science fiction, this is it. Grab it!
Again, wonderful characters and world-building carry this series forward. It's the first time humans will be allowed to stay on the planet Darenti Four and meet the Darenti themselves, who look rather human-like but are quite small and certainly have a different social structure. Adventure ensues - sorry, no spoilers, but it's very exciting! And very hard to put the book down - I just kept going until I dropped! An extra fillip are the reports from the galactic news service, who hound the explorers via drones and broadcast tabloid-style news to Earth. You won't want to miss this book! - I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary review. I really enjoyed getting to know this older Siti, who's still following in her fathers footsteps. She's on a mission as a junior officer in the Colonial Explorer Corp, to the planet her father made first contact with 100+ years ago. Older does not always mean wiser... she still does things on impulse and gets herself into unexpected and unpredictable situations. This was a fun read, with lots of surprises and adventures with old friends, and revelations that leads to change. I would happily recommend to other readers of the previous books in the series, it is a worthy addition to the tales of Siti and her friends.
Brilliant book! I really enjoyed reading this, interesting and twisty, some things you won’t see coming, a few shocks and a book that is extremely hard to put down! Great characters, a lot that is unpredictable, and what I really live, which is lots of action, yet in a world that may be weird and wonderful, yet still seems to ‘make sense’. It helps if you already know the characters from other books but isn’t strictly necessary, and Liam-lovers will be in for a BIG surprise.
This book is part of a series, but I haven't read any of the other books and I had no trouble reading this story as a stand alone. I loved the characters, but my favorite is Liam the little blue and white animal that is Siti's pet/helpmate. There are surprises packed into this story. It is easy to read and very entertaining. I would highly recommend the story if you like space exploration, new worlds, aliens, and a bit of intrigue.
I'm still sniffling as I write this review. The problem with a new addition to a great series is I read too fast. And the Explorer Corps is a great series: wonderful characters, little doom and destruction, a hint of romance, and inventive non-humans. Paradox made me cry, but goodbye doesn't have to be forever. I highly recommend this series, as well as the Space Janitor series. Both are great series with memorable characters and a lot of heart.
This book is the continuation of the young woman s i t i as she grows and matures in the CEC. Try not to give you a spoiler here but you are going to enjoy and cry possibly at the end of the story. It is a young adult and I don't just mean youth but it does carry a good storyline.
Now that Siti is no longer in training, the tone of this story is a bit different, but the types of trouble and how things work out are still with her familiar flare.
A few interesting surprises in this one and an interesting epilogue that promising more mayhem to come.
Brilliant! A really excellent, well written, sci fi adventure! As always a true delight to read! Straight away I was swept up in the excitement & I nearly finished in one sitting, kept me up late reading! A really great story, I do recommend!
The story starts a few years after where the previous one ended. Well written with an interesting plot and lots of great tech devices and other surprises. A great read.
I have read this series several times and love how the characters development continues to grow. Love the shape shifter book the best. Great job Julia Hun I on another great series.
I've really been enjoying reading this series, and one thing I have always been curious about is why Siti’s dad is called the Hero of Darenti Four. Well, in this book, Siti and the crew are heading to Darenti Four! I was very excited about that!
The Darenti were the first sentient alien life that has been found, and Siti’s dad was part of that expedition all those years ago. While there, Siti's dad saves the Darenti from danger and thus dub him the Hero of Darenti Four. In this book, I really appreciated how there was a bit of a parallel to Siti’s dad’s story when the Darenti came to Siti for help. They trust her dad, so they trust her. But both the embassy and the Darenti are hiding things and Siti isn’t sure who she can trust. But one thing she does know is that she needs to figure out what is going on because if she doesn’t it could unleash something pretty bad on humanity.
I really enjoyed learning about the Darenti! They were a pretty cool alien race and the mystery surrounding them was intriguing. Although I could definitely see why Sitit didn’t trust them... I didn’t trust them either. Some of the things they did were questionable... until you found out their motives. Then it all made sense. And while I guessed some of the revelations, it was still wild what we found out!
One of my favorite things about this series has been the characters and their evolving relationships. I love the camaraderie between Siti and Joss and all her friends. But one relationship I’ve been really enjoying is the one between Sitit and Lee. Lee was such a jerk in the beginning of the series, but then you got to know him and discovered the things he’s been through, and I honestly warmed up to him quite fast. I’ve really enjoyed his character arc going from this sort of villain to someone that Siti could potentially call a friend... and maybe more??
There was some sexual tension between Siti and Lee, and I’m not gonna lie, I loved every second of it! I love an enemies-to-lovers trope, okay? And I am really hoping that this is where their relationship is going! Especially because I’m finding Derek Lee to be a redeemable, likable character now. He was so sweet at times and I just love how he’s changed for the better from his academy days. Plus, the banter between Lee, Joss, and Siti was so good!
This book as a whole was good! It actually wasn’t very action-y, which I didn’t mind because it’s something I’ve learned to expect from this series. I'm usually an action kind of girl, but Colonial Explorer Corps is just a more laid-back series and I’m okay with that. The story itself was very interesting and I liked that we got to visit the famous planet of Darenti Four. In the middle of the book we did get this little adventure where Siti helps the Darenti find something, and that was a lot of fun! I love the characters (including Liam 😭), their banter, and their evolving relationships. I am very much looking forward to seeing what other trouble Siti can get herself into in future books! 😆
Siti is back - and so is Liam! And Joss and Zina and Derek Lee are along for this wild ride, too.
I really enjoyed following the usual suspects along on their new adventure on Darenti, a truly alien world. True to form, Siti once again managed to get herself and her friends into some tricky situations which took a team effort to resolve. As always, I loved the banter and the pop culture references as well as the twists and turns Julia Huni threw at both her characters and this unsuspecting reader. To be honest, I didn't know what to expect from this book, but this wasn't it. Compared to the previous books in the series, this story packed more of an emotional punch (for me, YMMV) and even managed to make made me cry, dagnabbit!
So far, this is my favorite book in the series, and I sincerely hope there will be many more adventures for Siti and her friends.
