A Trail So Lonesome

Spending five months eating trail dust wasn’t Leo Spencer’s first choice. Or his second. He’s not one to run away, but some situations can’t be fixed and his family — two brothers and a sister — needs to start over. Which is how he finds himself on a westbound wagon train. A Trail So Lonesome is an engaging start to a new series, set within a group of wagon trains traveling on the Oregon Trail.

This story started out as a bit of an enemies to more trope, with Evangeline and Leo at odds with each other. However, I enjoyed seeing the way they were continually drawn together and the way Leo looked out for Evangeline. As Evangeline’s dependence on him moved into more of a trusting friendship and eventually into a working agreement, it was sweet to watch as both of them began to feel much more for each other.

But there were events in both Leo and Evangeline’s backstories that affected them. Before they could hope to give their hearts to each other, various secrets, shame, resentment, and family drama needed to be addressed and sorted out.

I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading future books in the series.

When I was young, I yearned for a fresh start, just as Evangeline does in A Trail so Lonesome. I love it when I connect with a character so easily and can relate with what they’re going through (on some level, anyway.)

I love experiencing new things and places while reading fiction and felt as if I was on the Oregon Trail traveling west. It was interesting to discover Evangeline and Leo’s problems, secrets, and differences.

This is an exciting, fast-paced clean romance with lovely elements of faith. I’m happy to discover this a new-to-me author, and that this is the first book in a new series.

First Line: It was crowded and overwarm in the dance hall in Independence, Missouri, when Evangeline stepped inside.

Two hearts set on starting again, will the trouble of their pasts threaten their new beginning?

Opposites attract as they hope for a bright future out west. An entertaining read, Leo and Evangeline have a lot to learn along the way. Leo is a good man who has had to work hard his whole life, I liked that he is willing to help Evangeline and her father, as well as his growing friendship with little Sarah.

I liked that Evangeline is determined and bookish, she is willing to try new things, even if the instructions aren't in a book. She has worked hard to give Sarah the best that she can, and I liked seeing her and Leo come to trust one another over the course of the story.

Overall, this was an enjoyable western romance, that sets it up well for the next book in the series. A wholesome romance, with great relationship building, interaction, and backstory reveal throughout the book.

🌾👧🏼🐄

“… it felt like her smile was meant for him.”

“You don't have to prove anything to me. Just love me." Didn’t she know? That was the easy part.”

📜Overview: a sweet and clean romance, set within a traveling caravan, some fake dating, and lots of cowboys ;)

🫀Characters: it was so cute to see how all the cowboys treated little Sara; I’m such a softie for that 🥺 I really liked Alice, the twins, and the rest of the brothers — I’m intrigued to read the rest of the series whenever I need a little western palette cleanser.
I appreciated the focus on familial relationships, it was touching to see Leo accept his half-brothers, and see his need to still be there for Cooper.

🫶🏻Romance: it was so funny to see how protective Leo got of Evangeline so quickly, especially since he didn’t understand why 🤭 I loved seeing him soften up; him and Sara were adorable 🥺 Evangeline is a sweetheart; I admired her motivation to step up, even if she didn’t know exactly what to do. Although I’ve never been in her position, I definitely understood her shame and hurt, and how difficult it would be to open her heart again.

✍🏼Writing: easy to read and sweet!

🌾Season/Atmosphere: I’m not exactly sure, maybe spring or summer?

———

CONTENT/SPOILERS: Evangeline had a baby out of wedlock (no details) and is raising her as her sister. A boy is hung for stealing and murdering two people.

A Trail So Lonesome, an emotional saga centered around family secrets and fresh starts, is a super beginning to the Wagon Train Matches series! Lacy Williams excels in bringing the old west to life in her novels. In this one, she realistically portrays wagon train life with its joys and sorrows and immerses the reader in that world. This entertaining story features a fast-paced plot, wonderful characters, sweet and sometimes bittersweet romance, and an inspiring faith thread with themes of reconciliation and restored relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the beginning to the “to be continued” ending and highly recommend it especially for fans of inspirational western romance.

This is my first book by Ms Williams and also her first book in the Wagon Train Matches series. I found it interesting to see and feel what it was like to be a part of a wagon train and what all it entailed. It is hard to keep secrets and keep your guard up at all times and both Evangeline and Spencer are doing this. It makes for an interesting combination that has sparks flying not just with butting heads but with attraction. It’s easy to become engrossed in these families lives and figure it all out but you are given teasers into what will be storylines in the sequels and I can’t wait. An enjoyable book experience that held my attention from the beautiful cover to the last page.

This is a great start to a new series from Lacy Williams, and I am already wanting more. First of all, I played Oregon Trail when I was a kid, and while this isn't the game obviously, reading it brought back fond memories which made the experience all the more enjoyable. Aside from that, Williams is a great author. She writes realistic plot lines, wonderful characters, and held my attention throughout the entire story. Even the problems that arose throughout the story were done well - meaning they fit seamlessly, did not feel forced just to make a story.

I can't wait for more from this series! Williams is certainly on my radar and I recommend putting her on yours as well. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lacy Williams captured my interest immediately with the plight of both the hero and heroine as they leave with their families. Evangeline travels with her little sister and her father. She comes from a wealthy background in Boston but convinced her father starting over in Oregon would resolve her issues with being shunned by society.

Leo Mason is the oldest of a hodgepodge set of siblings. He sacrificed his dreams and desires to raise his siblings after his stepfather and his mother died. When his youngest half brother does something (we never found out what it was) which forced the family to start over by heading west.

The tension between the wealthy, bookish Evangeline and the poor, hardworking Leo starts from their first interaction. As they get to know each other and as Leo’s siblings help Evangeline learn the skills she needs to survive on the wagon train, the romance develops.

I love the way Williams slowly revealed Evangeline’s secret throughout the book, although I guessed it early on. The downside was that Williams never revealed exactly what happened that caused Leo and his siblings to leave. She danced around the topic and gave some hints, but I’m assuming she intends to reveal this later in the series. Despite not knowing, it did not detract from the overall storyline.

Williams also introduced a third point of view, one of Leo’s younger brothers about a third of the way through the book. While his point of view did not advance the story between Evangeline and Leo, it does clearly set up for the second book in the series, especially with the cliffhanger final chapter. I found his point of view blended well with the overall theme of the wagon train setting.

In the end, the romance and satisfying conclusion delighted me. I think fans of clean historical romance will love this enemies-to-friends opposites-attract romance.

Genre: Christian Historical Romance, Clean Historical Romance, Wagon Train Romance
Location: Wagon Train Trail from Independence, Missouri to Oregon
Time Period: estimated 1860s / 1870s
Romance: Very clean. Light kissing.
Faith: Light. Talk about church and hymns.

I am really excited about this new series set on a wagon trail journey about romance and families. Many families decided to head west for a new start at life and business and some were running away from trouble and secrets. In this new series we get a look at what some of these pioneer stories may have been like.

Leo Spencer and his siblings have a lot of drama in their lives. He and his family are looking for a new start after his wayward brother brought misfortune upon them. But even before the incident happened, his family was already abandoned by their father and his two half-brothers are intent on joining them. This does not sit well with Leo who is nursing some old wounds with bitterness and unforgiveness. And on top of his family issues, he keeps getting distracted by a certain young woman by the name of Evangeline. He finds himself keeping an eye out on her and her little sister and father.

Evangeline is desperate to start a new life for Sara and for Sara not to be tainted by Evangline's secrets. Evangeline is very book smart and wealthy but that will not necessarily help her get across the USA any safer. She finds she needs and relies on Leo and his family much more than she cares to. She also is developing feelings for Leo who acts like he is displeased with her, but his eyes and touch say something else. Can these two survive the mounting dangers and hardships that will ultimately come their way?

This is mostly Evangeline's and Leo's story, but we are given glimpses of some of the other characters story arcs beginning for the rest of the series, and I look forward to them. This was an addicting read.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

I loved how the author wrote a story that captures a realistic look at what it may have been like on a wagon train . The long hours, restless nights and weather conditions all play a part in this incredible story. Whenever I read a story like this it reminds me of my grandfather. He traveled by wagon to Oklahoma to homestead his land. The stories he told about his travels were very intriguing.

Evangeline convinced her father to join the wagon train to find a better life. She wants to get away from all the gossip that is surrounding her and make a fresh start. She is hiding a secret that she thinks will cause others to turn their back on her. I thought her father was an honorable man who supported his daughter and wanted a good life for her. Her decision to move will cost more than she realizes as danger soon follows.

Leo is a great character who has a soft spot for Evangeline’s “little sister.” I loved how caring he was and soon was agreeing to help Evangeline on the trail. Their arrangement was interesting and I wondered how long it would last. Leo also has his hands full trying to help keep everyone in line while still keeping an eye on Evangeline.

The story is emotional and lets us get to know Leo and Evangeline better. Their interaction is tense at first because Evangeline is very stubborn and prideful. She is so worried that her secret will be discovered that she keeps everyone especially Leo at arms length. I loved watching these two slowly start to trust each other even though it does take Evangeline a bit longer. I’m excited that there will be more books coming in this exciting series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Christian Historical Romance is a favorite genre of mine. A Trail So Lonesome by Lacy Williams is Book 1 in the Wagon Train Matches series. I enjoy reading a series from the start and was excited and honored to read this book.

Leo Spencer has been raising his siblings for a few years since his stepfather and mother passed away. They are now heading West to start life anew after a situation arose. Leo doesn't like running from his problems, so he feels this isn't running away it is a fresh start. Evangeline is traveling on the Wagon Train with her father. She wants to head West as there a Rumors around town about her and she also has a secret that she wants to hide from others. Evangeline's father injures himself and Leo is right there to help her father. Leo and Evangeline begin to get to know each other, especially when Leo's siblings help Evangeline learn new skills. Will a Romance blossom between Leo and Evangeline? Will both families find a "new start" once they come to the end of the Wagon Train?

I have always been a fan of the Wagon Train "Heading West" stories. I think this is probably the best one with that theme that I have read. I was intrigued by the story and the characters from the very first chapter. Leo is an AMAZING man who has a heart for others. I saw that in the way he cared for his siblings and family. He was also very caring to Evangeline's father. Evangeline is a strong and independent woman. She makes life choices for her and her Dad to allow them to have a better life. The Author does a GREAT job of researching the Historical factors for this book. I finished the book in about 5hrs, I just couldn't put it down once I started reading! I am looking forward to reading more books in this series! FANTASTIC BOOK!

A Trail So Lonesome by Lacy Williams is a work of Christian Historical Fiction. Family secrets and danger to another family force two families to head west. Leo Spencer knows his family needs a fresh start, so he heads west with his two brothers and one sister. Evangeline carries a secret that sends herself, her father, and someone everyone believes is Evangeline’s sister heading west as well. Initially, sparks of an unpleasant variety fly between Leo and Evangeline. But when Evangeline’s father is injured, they form an unlikely alliance. From there, the relationship develops further.

I loved seeing the way Lacy Williams developed the characters and the storyline. The other characters, including a man named Steven Fairbanks and Leo’s two half-brothers, really add to the story. It shows how, through time, faith, and situations, relationships can change and improve.

As I read this book, I believe the author has the opportunity to continue this story by telling the stories of others traveling on the wagon train and to further develop the story of Evangeline and Leo’s relationship. So if you enjoy sweet historical fiction with a dash of sweet romance thrown in, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.

Reading about the pioneers going west, even in fiction, has always fascinated me. The perils of the journey from the terrain, the weather, wild animals and even fellow travelers makes for a harrowing trip. Two families are featured in this novel, Evangeline with her father and sister, and Leo with his twin brothers and sister. Both are harboring secrets that have led them to go on this journey, leaving all they know and love behind. They learn much, especially Evangeline who has been coddled all her short life and can’t even cook.
I especially enjoyed the times at night when they relaxed and played musical instruments and danced. They needed this escape after some of their more difficult days. The story itself was good but I do not like when an author leaves a cliffhanger that leads into their next novel. A Trail So Lonesome could have been tied up nicely at the end and left the reader with the choice of whether to purchase the next novel or not. There’s a secret being hidden by another traveler, which I had guessed early on in part, that leads into the next book.

What I think you should know:
A Trail so Lonesome by Lacy Williams is the first book in the Wagon Train Matches Series. The story starts in Independence, Missouri as a wagon train prepares to travel. This story features Leo Spencer who is traveling with his sister and brothers and Evangeline who is traveling with her father and little sister.

What you might need to know:
This book gives closure on some issues but leaves an overall cliffhanger for other characters.

What I think about this book:
I have been a sucker for the Western trails since I played Oregon Trail as a young girl and I have enjoyed several of Williams' past works so I was very excited to read this book. Evangeline reminds me of myself, I can imagine lugging a bunch of books across the country. Leo was a very interesting character, I really appreciated how he cared for Alice and his brothers. This was a very fun, quick paced adventure. I can’t wait to read the next in the series/

A Trail So Lonesome is written by Lacy Williams. This is book one in the Wagon Trail Matches. I am super excited for this series. The author has done careful research to bring history to life. I love this author's writing style. She writes relatable characters.

Evangeline and Leo both are harboring secrets. Evangeline's brought her onto the wagon trail. Leo is running from his past. Seeing the characters getting to know each other was heartwarming. Leo is a good man and the fact that he wants to help Evangeline shows that. When they strike an alliance for the benefit of their families will it develop into something more?

I liked the author's portrayal of the wagon trail. It was historically accurate and I loved seeing this part of history brought to life.

The author did a great job with this story. I cannot wait until the next book in the series. The characters are well written and are real feeling. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

“I don’t think this is going to work,” she whispered as she scurried to stay beside him. “Maybe you shouldn’t frown at me,” he muttered. “You called me Evie. I hate that nickname.”

Adventure, danger, family troubles, secrets, and a sweet romance. What a great start to this wagon train journey.

Leo and his family definitely have some things to work through. I did enjoy the family dynamic as it developed. Leo is determined and protective. I loved Leo’s (and his family’s) willingness to help Evangeline and her father when they ran into trouble. Leo’s relationship with little Sarah was precious.

Evangeline had book smarts but she wasn’t afraid of a little hands on learning and trying things out. Her relationship with Sarah and her father was strong. I loved how determined she was for a fresh start.

I loved Leo and Evie’s time together. Theirs was a sweet romance that had a few bumps.

I had read books 5-7 previously but I don’t think that they took away from this book at all. Yes, I knew the basics of Leo and Evangeline’s relationship but there was a lot of new things too.

Wagon train experiences are fraught with danger and challenges. This story tells of both. I read this book so quickly because it captured my attention and then characters were very realistic! I have many pioneer ancestors and after reading their stories, I felt like I was once again reading another one! Leo has so much on his shoulders. He feels he is about to break. His siblings are depending on his but what about what he wants? Then there is Evangeline. One mistake in her past is the reason she is on this wagon train. An injury to her father changes everything and now she needs Leo's help to continue the journey. She doesn't want his help but can't continue without it. I really enjoyed the recounting of everyday life on the trail. It was long and tedious, not to mention dangerous. I so admire the people that did it! I can't wait for the next book because this one ended on a cliffhanger!

A Trail so Lonesome by Lacy Williams is the first book in the brand-new series, Wagon Train Matches. Two characters with secrets who also need to start over in life find themselves traveling west. At first Evangeline and Leo seem like an unlikely pairing to this reader but first impressions are often not right. They are strong likable character trying to do what is right for the other family member. I like these two along with their families even if they have secrets that they do not share at first.

When I am looking to read a western historical novel, Lacy Williams is my go-to author. Her faith-based stories are a pleasure to read, immersing me into the historical world of the characters. This time was no different with the westward movement coming to life. I can highly recommend A Trail so Lonesome to one and all.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary digital ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love a good historical fiction novel. And wagon train romances do rank pretty high on my list of must-reads! This was a wonderful book and I couldn’t wait to read it. It felt like I was leaving friends when I had to stop reading to commence with life.

This is the start of a series and I find myself wishing they were all already out for me to read! I cannot wait. I wish they were all out already! You’re going to love learning everyone’s secrets and travelling the trail with them! You’ll love getting to know Leo and Evangeline and watching them go from enemies to friends. Or could it possibly be to more?

A Trail so Lonesome is a fabulous start to Lacy Williams’ newest series, Wagon Train Matches. I adored this story so much and meeting Leo and Evangeline. The characters are ones that could be easily relatable for many readers. I did find myself getting a little emotional at times and needing to grab my tissues. I thought it was a beautifully written book to read. I loved it.

I am giving A Trail so Lonesome five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I can not wait to get my hands on the next installment from the Wagon Train Matches series, A Trail of Secrets, to see where else Lacy Williams takes her characters and readers to next.

I really enjoyed reading A Trail So Lonesome and look forward to more stories from this series.

In the beginning, Evangeline and Leo are at odds with each other. Evangeline is taking care of her father and her "sister". The story follows the difficulties of the Oregon Trail that the pioneers encountered and how they overcame those challenges to find a new home in the west.

Evangeline has a secret she is ashamed of and doesn't want anyone else to know. Leo is trying to save his younger brother from destroying his life. They both want to find peace in a new place. Leo is protective of Evangeline who doesn't want to let him in but is grateful for his help. The more interaction the two have with one another, the more those feelings of friendship, then romance and eventually love settle in.

This was a clean, wholesome story that was a delight to read.

This is the first book in a new series by Lacy Williams – Wagon Train Matches. There’s a lot of tension between a lot of characters in this book for various reasons – losing parents at an early age, running away from problems in the past, misunderstandings and miscommunications, trying to deny mutual attractions, and the list goes on and on. Williams does pretty well at keeping the tension from making me give up on the story (I’m not a fan of a lot of tension in a book), and things slowly get sorted out as the wagon train makes its way west. I like the characters - their interactions, their secrets, their personal growth; and I like how the plot plays out. Be warned that Williams ends the book with a cliff hanger! Hopefully the next book will be out before too long.

A Trail so Lonesome

This happens to be a wonderful book. Lacy Williams brings an emotional story telling of possible experiences of the people who traveled west by way of the wagon train. There are parts that will have some people reaching for their box of tissues. Evangeline has talked her father into taking their small family west for a new start. When he is injured in an accident, she has to depend on the kind people who have befriended them. Leo is the oldest brother of his family and they are headed west for a new start. Leo ends up in an agreement to help Evangeline’s family make it to Oregon. He falls for the woman who seems to have secrets of her own. Will that change when her secret is revealed?

Great start to a new series!

Lacy Williams is a favorite author, so when I saw this new series I was intrigued. I was not disappointed! Leo and Evangeline have secrets and family drama that keep the reader engaged chapter after chapter. Loved how they were both such strong people, which I think you'd have to be to travel west in those days. But the best part is how the secondary characters are woven into the storyline, seemlessly with each having some intrique to make the reader want to know more. I'm so excited to continue the series to find out what happens with each of them.
