The Mad Mick’s new employer, Walter Lightspeed, has promised great things for America. Lightspeed cleared the way for his rise to power by skimming the dead weight off government, assassinating a legion of career politicians, lobbyists, and agency heads. Now only one barrier remains between him and the presidency—wrangling the support of the military.
If he lives that long.
Conor and Ricardo have their concerns about Lightspeed, but that’s not enough to make them surrender their lucrative contract work with him. If Lightspeed can do the things he promises, their small company will be well-positioned in his new administration. In fact, Conor is already making major changes in preparation for it, taking steps back home he thought he'd never take.
But great reward only comes with great risk. As Conor soon finds out, it’s not only Walter Lightspeed and his employees who share in those risks. When you operate at this level, even family becomes fair game.
Franklin Horton lives and writes in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He attended Virginia Intermont College and Virginia Commonwealth University. In his spare time he pursues outdoor adventures with his wife and two children. His interests include camping, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, and shooting.
This is hopefully not the final book in the Mad Mick series but I cant imagine where they will go from here. This was quite a ride to the end. I was so on the edge of my seat with this series that I had to immediately pick up another series once I finished this and forgot to leave a review!
If you like well thought out action and good plots then Franklin Horton is an author you need to look at. These books are fantastic. In this book the Mad Mick has some large problems to deal with and finds a way to get through them. Ironically there is a section where you think he will ride to the rescue but by the time he gets there the rescue if already done. This is the sort of change that I love about Franklin Horton's books. You do not know what is about to happen.
Horton has defitely made the Mad Mick/Borrowed World universe among the best collapse series' there is. Just can't get enough of it, and the addition of the Lightspeed plotline has made for some exciting and original material. I also love the overarchcing conflict between the "good guys" and those in positions of true power, trying to take the reigns for their own selfish ends. I suppose everyone loves a good David and Goliath story, and these days it's often the little guy versus rulers adaptation. They say art mirrors life. It's no surprise Horton's writing takes the temperature of many people in the world today.
The book picks up directly after The Death Dealer's Manual and starts in a place of turmoil, at least on the part of self-proclaimed President Lightspeed. After forgetting to include the military in his plans, Lightspeed finds himself and his crew at the whim of the military. Either his plan will unravel, leading to his team's death, or Lightspeed will make history. For Conor Maguire and "his family," this book had so many ins and outs, so many stories within a story that the reader is always on the edge of their seats. Though this is the 8th book in the series and could be the end....there is always hope for more.
Conner is now partnering with Ricardo to guard a man who declared himself President of the United States and is the only person on the planet who can restore power to the world. With all his good intentions, he still runs into opposition from the power-hungry leadership of the old government. While the Mad Mick is playing security guard to this man, Connor's family is being put in danger. The group must work together to keep each other safe.
This edition struggled to have a point. I thought with all their combined experience, they would have prevented some of the events that occurred, but I guess it would not have had as much action in the end. Connor seemed like a small player in this book, and I missed the focus on him from previous books.
I have been a huge of Franklin Horton since the beginning of the Borrowed World series and subsequent series. The Mad Mick is one of my favorite characters of all time. Mick, although can be the most savage of killers, is absolutely hilarious. One can chuckle reading through the pages, but when I read the "special bicycle with training wheels" I about wet my pants laughing. Guess it's an inside thing.
Franklin, keep up the absolute great writing and never stop.
Supposed to be the final book in the Mad Mick series but all the characters as well as some colorful new ones are still in play and the country is still rebuilding - so here's hoping we get to see the Mad Mick and all his entourage in action again. In the meantime, thanks, Mr. Horton, for a heck of a fun ride as well as one very educational look at politicians and their somewhat skewed vision of honor!
I enjoyed the whole series and this one is no exception. Conor McGuire is a creation for the ages. Violence isn't the answer every time but he can bring it when the situation requires it. Family loyalty is the ultimate reason for the unstoppable frame of mind Conor McGuire uses to save them when threatened. You will not be disappointed in reading this next episode of the Mad Mick chronicles.
The Mad Mick started as a minor character in another of Franklin Horton's series. Horton soon realized that his readers wanted more of The Mad Mick! This installment lives up to the high standards we have come to expect! Thank you Franklin Horton for this great series!
What can I say about this series. I love how Mr. Horton draws you into the world of intrigue. Mad Mick and his family both by blood and by choice never fail to deliver a great storyline. It makes you ask yourself what would you do to protect the ones you love if SHTF. Mick leaves doubt as to what he will do. I t
This was by far the best Mad Mick story by far. Loved the story the twists and turns. Unfortunately it was ruined at the end by using a crook like demo Dick as a hero. He may have founded the big team. But disgraced himself and the teams by lining his own pockets and thinking he was the teams. Good book though.
I love this series, can't get enough of the Mad Mick! It is interesting to see a new side of Conor and I really like how the worlds of the compound and valley are becoming intertwined and hope for more of that in the next books. Franklin Horton, you have created something amazing here!! Can't wait to see what's next...
Just can't go wrong when the Mad Mick is about. An easy going man until he's not. Just better make sure you aren't the cause of his not. I've truly enjoyed this series along with several others of Mr. Horton. Great story line and fast pace, wonderful characters. What's not to love. I enjoy the dark sense of humor in these books.
I started with the Borrowed World Series and have quickly and obsessively read everything that Franklin Horton has written available on kindle. The man is a fantastic author and I’ve enjoyed all his characters, but Conner ( the Mad Mick) is my favorite and I’m excited that he’s still working on the punch list and I’ll get read about him more!
This is a fine story of how to try to help people with road blocks in place. Its still a little more than that too. Its got so may twist and turns that when you think you got it. Boom! No you don't. I love th story take the time to enjoy it. Especially the underlying message.
I have read a lot of books, and several times thought some of them had no chance of another being better. This is my first series by this author. He did it! Out did all the others! If you haven't read these, you are missing the very best! I am reading extra slow to enjoy them and don't want to miss anything. 2 more series after these, and I think they be just as good. I love the characters. Fantastic writing! Makes you feel like you are there with them!
I've read the whole series. Truly enjoyed the whole read. Easy and pleanty.of action. The background is always mixed in, but never enough to bore you. Recommend starting with the Locker 7 Girl series ( probably slightly the wrong title, but close) but Horton introduces the Mad Mick there. Its nice that this was not just another, EMP story.
I’m addicted. What can I say? I’ve been reading Mr. Horton’s work for several years now and this one was extra special. Many unexpected turns of events, anxiety for the dangers faced by beloved characters, and a truly edge of my seat tale. Loved this one sooo much! Off to get Book Nine, I hope it’s not still in progress!
Franklin Horton is amazing. He brought me in to a new genre that never did appeal to me and made me love it. Conor and his clan feel like real people as you read each installment of the series.
A page-turner to be sure. I stayed up very late to find out what was happening ! Really great twists and turns, surprises, scares, villains and an unexpected hero! The Mad Mick will always be one of my favorite series! TY Franklin Horton
This latest book in the series was like the rest a fun read. These are great characters and an interesting story line. Not sure if this is the last book hoping it’s not.
I just love all of these characters from this series. This was a action filled thrill ride from start to finish. If you have not read this series then get the books and leave your reviews!
I loved this book by Franklin Horton. I also loved these characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of this Franklin’s books. I listened to this book on audiobook.
As I get older I can relate to conners emotional growth. Not really Franklin. I thought it never pop a hole in the secretary of defense. Let it shows the patients that the man Has developed
Loved seeing Demo Dick make an appearance! As I read this in Fall of 2023, Demo Dick had already passed. Good to see his legend lives on with the exploits of the Mad Mick!
This sounds a lot like it's the last of the Mad Mick series. They cleaned up all the loose end, and still had time to tell a good story. So this is probably the last we'll hear of Mad Mick (or is it?).
Only the truth is spoken in this book. I hope this never happens to the people, but if it does, except the worst case. You can only take care of yourself and your family, so be ready.
I have recommended this author to a friend that likes this genre Of books. Both of the series I am reading have been compelling. It is 1 AM and I have to be up early, but I had to finish this book. I think I will be sad to see the series end.
This time Conor and his tribe move to Lightspeed's Island and get to enjoy some R&R while Lightspeed tries to get America's electronic grid going again. As usual Connor can't sit still and soon there is a lot of death and destruction.
It makes me a little sad the house i come to the last book in this series. I have become quite fine if the Mick and this family! I love Ricardo and have really enjoyed this entire series
