As much as I enjoyed the DAMC books I’ve read, this one just didn’t grab me the same way. Fletch and his MC sort of pale in comparison, while the DAMC guys prove again that they’re good to the core. Sure, they’re a tad rough and still have some deep shadows around them, but they’re willing to do the right thing and work with Z’s brother and his crew to try to put something even more nefarious out of their town.
Nova is likable. She’s strong, smart, stubborn, and clearly has the respect of those who know her. But Fletch doesn’t know her. Not at first. And he wonders about her methods until they open up and talk. And they don’t just talk, if you get me. So we have the added danger of being undercover, falling for the partner who may or may not be around when it’s all done, and the hope that maybe the pieces will fall into place. It also looks like her past assignment may be coming back to haunt everyone.
But Fletch is harder to like. And he really messes up when Nova runs her mouth a bit much. I realize he panicked, but there are better methods. And it was very difficult for him to come back from that with me.
And then we get to learning to communicate in the end. One does it better than the other, and I’d bet you can guess who shares better. But Fletch does learn. And he outright says what he wants, which earns him some credit. So maybe he and Nova have a bright future ahead as partners for life? It sure seems like they do.
