Deep Sea Predators #3

Electric Eel: Bloodbath

Rate this book
Before the megalodon, before the kraken, there was the incident on Maxwell Island. Powerful individuals covered it up as an attack by local terrorists. The truth lies below the water—a truth which will spark electrifying terror in the heart of humanity.

On the night of June 30th, a thunderous explosion awakens the inhabitants of Maxwell Island. The remains of the party yacht Dream Wrecker illuminate the shores with towering flames. It is the first of many oddities plaguing the police force led by the inexperienced Chief Silvia Remar. Ostracized by her own staff, she tries to toe the line between finding out the truth and pleasing the island government and business sector.

However, doing so becomes increasingly difficult when more strange events plague the island. A jetboat crashes ashore, its skier mysteriously missing; water temperatures around the island rise and fall with seemingly no explanation; a normally docile sperm whale goes berserk, sinking a fishing vessel in the process; and people at night report seeing a lightning storm under the water.

Following strange reports of deep sea creatures rising to the surface, Silvia begins to suspect these occurrences may be related to a series of violent earthquakes in the Puerto Rico Trench following the Gota ja’ Titan meteor impact.
By the time she learns the truth, it is already too late…

Say a huge YES to pure hedonism. Let's face it, you read to escape and to go somewhere different? So prehistoric sea monsters presented in a calm and viable manner makes good sense, well I think so. I found this to be well written, fast moving and most importantly , fun. Having started with the Megladon, I know, NOT Book 1. I have started to try and read in order to develop the story. This has has been a worthwhile and thoroughly enjoyable task, it just shows that you should not be put off by a garish cover. How does it go? Don't judge a book by it's cover. Never has a truer word been spoken !

Electric Eel Bloodbath was an outstanding icky bug! Written in solid third-person, past-tense, there is very little head-hopping, or not enough to jerk me out of the story.

The chapters and scenes were relatively short and the action non-stop. There is a very high body count, lots of graphic gore, and of course, the typical “what if” at the end. Fine by me.

I had a great time and was glued to my seat right until the last page. Highly recommended.

Good summer read that reminded me of the creature features I used to watch on Saturday mornings in the 80s

Once the action gets going in this one, it is awesome. I do think it took a bit of time to get there though. I wasn't a big fan of the police chief until she got out there and actually did something, but then she redeemed herself. The creatures were magnificent and that's what really counts. I don't think it needed the last little twist, but I guess it sets up for any new adventures in the future.

The book was not bad, but I will only give it 3 stars, because I seriously disliked the protagonist. In 'Megalodon: Bloodshed', Silvia Remar was a selfish and cowardly minor character who revealed what happened at Maxwell Island. To be honest, in this book I was expecting to find out that Silvia Remar used to be a somewhat good cop, who broke due to failure. Instead, I found out that Silvia was pathetic even before she became a cop. At least she did show some bravery, before failure crushed her defiance and she gave up. Honestly, I felt sympathy for her due to her disability. I imagine that if she had been born with better genes she would have been a better cop. However, that sympathy diminished when I remembered what she had chosen to do in 'Megalodon: Bloodshed' when Nico and Denise asked her for help. She had an opportunity to prevent a world war and avenge the people who died because of Hesten's plots. She could've done the right thing, but instead she chose to squander that opportunity and practically side with the despicable man who caused her greatest failures, for selfish reasons. Her decision to let a world war happen and let several atrocities go unpunished showed a selfishness that actually matched the selfishness possessed by Vince Hesten, who committed several crimes and tried to start a world war for selfish reasons. I had liked Royce, but, although is selfishness was not as great Silvia's and Hesten's, his decision to completely give up made me dislike him in the end.

Upon reading this book, I was initially unaware that the storyline precedes the events of the first two books in the series. This lack of chronological clarity left me confused regarding the development of the plot. It would be more apt to classify this book as a prequel or perhaps label it as 'Book 0' rather than the third instalment.

It seems to be a bit of a trend lately, with authors making their protagonists dislikeable. It boggles the mind why they would do that. As a reader, I see the author’s world through the protagonist’s eyes, and if this character is dislikeable, I lose interest in the story. It is one thing for the protagonist to show vulnerability but it is entirely a different situation when one does not root for the main character. Perhaps one needs to accept that few authors can make protagonists and other characters as believable as Stephen King does.

Despite these criticisms, the book provided several hours of entertainment and was not entirely without merit. The narrative was engaging enough to hold my interest for its duration.

Electrifying Good Time

Electric Eel: Bloodbath by Michael Cole is a fun and thrilling read. What I liked most about Electric Eel was that it was a prequel to the Megalodon books. As well as showing the events that unfolded on Maxwell Island that were briefly mentioned in Megalodon Bloodshed. The story was top notch and flowed very well. The characters were all very great as well as the characters from Bloodshed who made a small cameo in the end. The creature was as dangerous as you could imagine. I also really like how the Electric Eel has now shown up in two separate books by Cole. Making it one of our first recurring creature antagonists of Michael Coles. All in all Electric Eel: Blood Bath is a great creature feature story who I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Michael Cole or enjoys Sci Fye/Horror and or creature features in general.

Review of this book.

Extremely well written. The story moved at a fast pace, and the continuity was flawless. The ending was quite different from what I expected. It was eerily scary. The story was well researched and was incredibly unputdownable. I stay up all night to finish it. It was well worth the missed sleep. Fantastic book! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre. They will not be disappointed.

A good little (big?) creature feature featuring an animal not really used in creature features all that much. It was a fun ride that made my fear of the sea, fish, and anything related to the sea and fish absolutely pop off every time the eel came into play or was mentioned because it was written so well, the imagination would run wild with the descriptions.
Now, onto the next Michael Cole story to give me even more chills.

Another Cole thriller!

Electric Eel is a fast-paced, riveting, thriller! With the usual Michael Cole complex, emotion & character driven plot (& subplots).
The character development & world building is rich with detail & meaning. Every page bursting with crisp, colorful imagery.
Definitely a fun sea creature adventure, with a surprising conclusion!
Love!!! ……..

Good Prequel!

I thought this book would be different but they were some of the prior characters showing events where humans failed and a lot of people died. I hope there is another book because I want to see how the electric eel meets its end! The kracken was pretty cool but this thing is like an underwater electric god who is really hungry.

Electric Eel: Bloodbath book 3

The story is good, but the timeline seems off. It feels as though this story would be better if it was in between books 1 and 2, particularly with the way the story ends. Overall, it is a bit of a letdown.

The number one thing I can say is read this before reading the second book in the series; Megalodon: Bloodshed. Despite this being the 3rd book in the series the story takes place in the middle (ish) of the second book. I primarily wish I’d read it in a different order because certain characters we (the readers) have met in previous books and have already developed opinions about. It would not hurt the story to have read it in a different order.

Pros:
+ awesome monster
+ great descriptions of the kills
+ despite being a sidequel or prequel to certain events in the series (thus we know the ultimate outcome) it was still enjoyable to read and felt like it’s own thing

Cons:
- maybe not enough monster… but I almost always say that
- I had strong feelings about a main character before reading (due to book 2) and it was hard to shake those feelings in this read
- creature features require a certain amount of accepting the implausible BUT I found the use of the word ‘evolve’ in this book to be troubling… evolve and adapt aren’t the same
- how do we get out from under the Jaws (movie more than book) stereotypes of who are involved with ocean creature features?

I enjoyed the read. Giant electric eels, I mean come on sign me up! Can’t stress enough to read this book second if you’re going through the three books (Deep Sea Predators).
