After working hard to study magic at lightning speed, Seren is finally ready to test her abilities against magical beasts! It also means that she and Vi are going to have to sneak out without being seen. Seren has a lot on her plate, but she’s determined to become a High Mage and spend her life devoted to magic and everything that comes with it. Unfortunately for her, Prince Helios has finally started paying attention to her as his future wife. Will her old feelings throw a wrench in her plans?

I loved the first book, but I’m a little iffy about the second installment. While a few important things did occur, there was also a whole lot of nothing in between each of the important events. I wouldn’t have minded so much filler if there was some good character development, but that simply wasn’t the case. If anything, I kept thinking about how so much could be solved through simple communication, but then it wouldn’t make the story as fun as it is!

While much of the book covers studying and practicing magic, I did like seeing Seren sneak out and be able to test her magic skills outside of her secret training sessions. It was great to see what everyone was up to and what they were planning in the present. It was also great to see some world building with new characters getting introduced and seeing the characters out on the town. I think the filler would’ve worked out better if it wasn’t constant details on studying and practicing magic. It just gets dull after a while and makes the story feel like it’s at a standstill, especially because there wasn’t much character development happening during the sessions. Honestly, the highlight of the book was the side story at the end.

I swear I’m not full of complaints, though. There was some progress on the romance front with Seren and Viol and it was really cute. We did get to see the super curious side of Seren at some point, and it’ll be fun to see her finally get some character growth in the next book. I kept thinking about how it seems like she doesn’t have any friends, so I’m hoping we’ll see her make a friend once her High Mage plans are out in the open.

Cute but slow. I'm not talking slow burn (though it is that) but I kind of thought based on the title she would have actually broken up with her fiance by the end of volume 2. Alas.

The main issue here is a function of the plot. Necessarily, she has low self-esteem, but I'd like to see it improve faster, and for the story to develop faster, too. Like a bad video game, there's a lot of magic-levelling/grinding in these books (literally video game grinding).

The hero also suffers from fairly low self-esteem. I like both of them - they are both kind, sweet people who need someone to complement them and to lift them up, I just wish they'd get on with things. I find myself skimming sections to get ahead.

Also -- does the english publisher even have a website? If they do, it's not showing up on google.

The author delivers once again with her story of a smart, hardworking young lady who is trying to forge a new path for herself after overhearing earth-shattering words from her fiance.

In this volume, Seren makes huge leaps of progress with her magic. Considering how she started from zero, her ability to grow is really astonishing and continually impresses her teacher, the cute cat Vi who is actually the high mage Viol. She is determined to pass the high mage exam in order to escape her marriage.

It really is heartwarming and inspirational to read the interactions between Seren and Vi. She's really a heroine you want to root for. She's extremely capable and focused and she really shows how far hard work can get you. The main trait that powers her and is both her greatest motivator and downfall is really her low self-esteem. It urges her to work harder but it also is the source of her current huge misunderstandings.

Unlike other stories, the misunderstandings prevailing are really the forces that move the story forward. Normally, ones that go on this long would be annoying. But in this case, I actually hope that the misunderstandings between Seren and her fiance and all her other admirers will continue. Without them, Seren wouldn't have opened her doors to magic, Viol, and all the fun she's experiencing now. I'm also really shipping her and Viol but romance is all up in the air for now considering she's still engaged. What we can look forward to is more of her growth and the very nearly upcoming exams. I can't wait for the results and the subsequent effects of her passing; because every knows she will.

I really enjoyed this story. I like that the main character works hard and realizes she wants to grow and change for herself, not for her current/past romantic interests.

I also really enjoy the different points of view we get from many of the characters, especially the main man, Viol, who's panicked inner monologues are adorable. It really makes the characters interactions together feel more fleshed out and fun.

The only thing that irked me was the cliche "every male character is actually deeply in love with the main girl but she's just too modest to notice!" At least, despite that, Seren is still a solid main and I love her development as she discovers living for her own dreams. I look forward to the continuation.

very good read

I love how the author is very good about the structure of her story, honestly, I have no idea where she’s going with this… will the heroine get her way, will the prince snap out of it and actually notice that he’s losing her… will he care? Will she actually become a mage? Will she and Voil be together… two books, and it’s still all up in the air… I mean she thinks that she’s gonna be a mage, but will things turn out the way that she thinks they will? Honestly, things could flip at any moment. And that makes it exciting and you have a buying and you care about the characters. The story is very well put together, and I can’t wait for the next installment.

cute, adorable characters living through their training montage arc which is great, but sadly it was done extremely repetitively

they get on an outing, she learns something new. she does better but not perfectly, he gives her advice, compliments her, she humbly refused the compliment, he explains why he is right to compliment her, she accepts humbly and falls a a little more for him. parts of the conversations get repetitive.
rinse and repeat.

so yeah, I had to skim some parts.

BUT!!! this is also so stinking cute, they're adorable. if you want something sickenly sweet and a training montage, this might be for you.

Book 2 Doesn’t Dissapoint

Loved book 1 and book 2 was wonderful also.
Can’t wait for the next one.
Very slow moving romance but I think that makes it a bit more on the realistic side?! Not that magical beasts are real or anything but you get my meaning.
Saren and Viol are just too cute together and I hope we get to see a kiss or something soon.

Why so boring?

Its like a fantasy magic arts literature book with tiny bits of story. Who needs that? :(

This was very enjoyable. Seren realizing what her feelings for Helios versus her feelings for Viol are was enjoyable. And her realizing that she wants her own chosen path not one chosen for her was satisfying. Loving the bonding secret excursions with Viol. I am very much looking forward to the next volume.

Burning question here: when exactly are we getting to the 'Satisfying Break-up' part of this story!? Lol I really can't wait to read the reaction of the oblivious, neglecting Prince!
