A Drive through Time

Rate this book
A time travel story where a young man with MacGyver-like skills must face ruthless ancient warriors. Good thing his companion is a mysterious young woman with exceptional fighting skills. Too bad she has her own agenda.

When Duncan decided to take a month off and travel around Europe, he never imagined where he would end up. Or when. He wakes up in a world utterly different than the one he knew, a world with no GPS signal and no internet connection. Struggling with the societal norms, injustice, and inequity of the time, Duncan reluctantly accepts the help of a beautiful young woman, Alana, and her father. With the threat of an attack looming over their heads, Duncan must use his knowledge of modern chemistry, physics, and cyber technology to stop an invading army and save an entire town along the way.

When Alana is kidnapped, Duncan begins a journey through strange, perilous lands to save her. He unknowingly involves himself in the Celtic tribes' internal politics when he learns about a terrible secret plan to take over all the Celtic tribes. He is faced with the decision to either help Alana and face the consequences of changing history or let the tribes face their fate.

Highly entertaining and easy-to-read story of Duncan, a man who works in the science industry, who gets transported (in his RV) to another time and place in past history. What I liked most about the story was the mixing of modern technology (i.e. cell phone, torch, drones, solar energy, the RV, a gun) and how Duncan uses these tools and interacts with those in old Europe who are still battling with weapons like knives and swords. There was humour in the book, romance, historical fiction, and overall the story was fun to read.

This was my Christmas gift book this year — as always, I enjoyed reading something I wouldn’t normally pick for myself. The premise was fun but the writing and character development were very, very basic and 1-dimensional. This book seems to have a lot of fans for being independently published, and I don’t like bashing indie art, so I’ll just say this book wasn’t for me. If you value exciting action over complex world building, straightforward and fast-moving plot over slow and thoughtful prose, and really love time travel stories where modern technology meets ancient cultures, you may love this book.

A Drive Through Time - Andrei’s beginning is really great. I love the rewind. As usual, he delivers an interesting storyline.
Duncan wakes up after a night of celebration at CERN in his new top-of-the-range RV. Bought with dubious lottery winnings. Preparing to start his month-long vacation, he doesn’t recognise the world he sees around him.
Originally, I wasn’t sure if I’d like Duncan’s attitude towards his newfound friends. Although he was shocked to be exposed to a world of violence and poverty, his attitude towards this new world made me want to kick him. His initial disbelief that a world could function without GPS and that these people must be living off the grid of their own choice didn’t work for me. I wanted to scream at him. Help them you have so much!!
One could say the comparison is great writing wrapped up in a clever story.
As the story unfolds, and he realises that he has traveled back in time he starts to realise that he has so many things which could help his less fortunate friends. Once he starts sharing his many skills the adventures really begin.
This book has, imagination, creativity, blood, gore, battles galore, an amazing heroine who has no fear, I now can’t stop reading. Even though he naturally wants to get back to his own cushy life I love the way he is finally seeing he can do so much, and he uses his many talents to really evolve the story's success.
I’m hooked.
It’s a Masterpiece of imagination that can turn a hair trimmer into a stun gun along with an unpredictable ending.
I read this as part of a book club.
A Five-star review is justified for the tremendous creativity he has injected into making this a wonderfully enjoyable story.

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway.

So, this is the type of book I would normally read -- time travel/fantasy. The setting here is a scientist, Duncan, is about to set off on a vacation to study wolves in the alps and the setting is now. He celebrates with his co-workers a bit too much and wakes up the next morning with a massive headache in his decked out RV .... and when he steps outside he is at the base of a mountain, but there are no modern sounds/sights. He thinks someone is playing a trick on him when two people approach that are being chased. He hides in his RV, but does something to spook them. He slowly realizes that he is not in the present day and needs to actively work in order to stay alive -- and help those that he learns to care about stay alive as well.

I enjoyed this book. There was action pretty much start to finish. I did wish there was a bit more character development, but there were little moments throughout the book that let you know what type of man Duncan was or wanted to be.

I love Saygo's books!

This book is a very fast-paced read. The action comes quickly, one event after another, so that I was breezing through without being bored. It does read almost like a YA novel but without all the angst that comes from teenage characters. They're older, and they act as such. Pacing is definitely top-notch!

Another thing I really appreciated was the incredibly well thought out-ness (I know that's not a word, but I couldn't think of a better word for it, lol) of the whole thing. With time-travel novels, you often find plot-holes and unanswered questions. How is modern tech going to fit in? Is it all going to work? Why does this person have this extent of technology on hand when they're sucked back? I was sort of worried that our ends wouldn't exactly meet. But I was pleasantly surprised! Every time I came across a question, I got an answer!

I look forward to picking up the second! A solid 5/5 read for me!

More please

I was really taken with the premise of this book. The short preview I read, sold me on purchasing this book. As an avid reader since the 3rd grade,, (circa '58-'59), I just really like time travel books. The world building was excellent. It helped that the author added some historical tidbits throughout this story to almost make it a believable tale. The interaction between the 2 main characters, Duncan & Alana, 2 people from different time eras, was well written. From my viewpoint, I was pulling for the relationship. However, the ending was a total surprise, that I saw coming, but didn't. There has to be another book. While this story could end and leave the reader asking, "what if", I believe it can progress. Overall, it was a good read. There is violence here, but only in the context of the story and how life was actually lived during that Era. There was a touch of romance, but nothing that a child couldn't read. There was not a lot, if any at all, of any of the, 7 - 4 letter words, that couldn't be spoken on TV. I recommend this book just because.

This is actually a pretty good adventure/thriller time travel story. I would have rated it higher except for some glaring "technical" errors. As an example our hero says his wrist/hand is broken in one scene yet on the next page he's using the broken wrist to put a choke hold on one of the people attacking him.
That an other similar errors diminished the story for me.
On the other hand [no pun intended], if it wasn't for errors like that I would have rated it 5 stars. It is unusual to find a time travel story where a "super" RV is being drive around 1st century Gaul by a CERN scientist.
I will admit that the ending took me totally by surprise. There wasn't a hint that the story was headed in that direction. It does however set the table for additional books which I am looking forward to reading should they be published.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as the chosen book in my book club. The time travel aspect kept my mind occupied working out how it was all possible, but everything was explained. I loved the historic backdrop too. I really liked Alana, the main female character alongside Duncan, who took a little while to warm up to. The story is full of action and suspense. They literally fall from one thing into another, and it kept me spurred on. I read it in a couple of days! I’m looking forward to the sequel. Definitely recommend and not only for time travel lovers.

A mix of romance, action and time travel.

One day Duncan wakes up from a hangover, he finds outs he is in a completely different world. A world without technology, clean water, proper houses or toilets! His situation gets worse when he is caught in the middle of a brutal war. In the middle of this nightmare, he meets Alana. A kind, lovely woman with a lion's heart.
As he blends into this world, Duncan makes a choice that will change him forever even if he returned to his own time.

I loved Alana, she is strong, independent woman who knows what she wants. Duncan made me laugh when he tried to tell people about technology. Just imagining the situations was hilarious. The action scenes which included past and present technology were fun to read and the romance elements were well balanced.

I read this as a part of a book club.

Another time travel story…but better!

While this started as just another time travel story, the character development and plot twists are much better than expected. There is also a realistic limit to the main character’s actions which make him vulnerable enough to make the story interesting.

I do look forward to a sequel.

Superb Time Travel Story!

This started slow, but picked up the pace and drew me in and would not let me go. Andre has created a universe that will support many more stories. His characters are very real and are engaging as well. I look forward to reading more of his adventures.

Simply Amazing

A Drive Through Time is a beautiful book, a solid five star mystery box in which a modern man is thrust into ancient times but along with modern solar powered gadgets that make him a heroic Merlin type in this setting.

Excellent story

I enjoyed the story and the characters. I was disappointed at two points that the characters actions were not plausible. However I got by that a little later and continued to enjoy the book.

A Good Read.

This is good story, much the same as " Glory Road" or Burroughs' "John Carter" books. A little mystery, A little magic(science) , and a lot of sword play. I found it enjoyable because of it's total absence of profanity.. All I can say of the author is "keep up the good work."

Action Packed!

I read this as part of a book club. It's not my usual genre, but the action was riveting. It's very well written, and although some of the action was perhaps a bit far fetched, it was possible and believable. The author did a good job with the change to a much earlier time.

I was pleasantly surprised while reading Saygo’s book, A Drive through Time. Time travel is not a genre I would choose, yet the book club I belong to did.

Duncan and Alana stole the spotlight in this story for me and the setting’s descriptions were wonderfully crafted.

Duncan is a young man thrust into an ancient, ruthless universe and a war. Along with his vast knowledge of present day technology, solar powered gadgets, and Alana, a beautiful, warrior-like young woman, Duncan prevails and earns hero status in the good chieftain clan.

But will he avoid the lottery officials’ investigation in the present? I guess we’ll discover this turn of events “in the future.”

Filled with action and adventure, I recommend reading A Drive through Time.

RV Time Machine

An engaging love story out of time. I’m not sure how accurate the history is since I’m not too familiar with the Gauloise period Duncan winds up in. But it was entertaining if maybe a little unbelievable (a conveniently solar powered RV? A nearly inexhaustible supply of bullets, water bottles and sandwiches?) But then we’re talking time travel, so we’re already stretching reality…you just have to go along for the ride.
I won this book in a giveaway, though it is a genre I like so I might have chosen it on my own. Ending seems ripe for a sequel.

Romance and Romans

Never a safe mix, when bad warlords and good chieftains we're both bloodied and rapacious.
Read of a very different Geneva convention.
