Ironwood #3

Elf Shot

Rate this book
The Norns have decreed that the only way to stop Ragnarok is if Layla Ironwood stands with the elves. It’s a shame a certain elf prince ruined the one chance he had with her.

‘Elf Shot’ is book three of the new spin-off series in the best-selling 'Fae Universe,' featuring everyone's favorite supernatural hunting family, the Ironwoods.

Layla Ironwood has a destiny whether she wants one or not. As someone who considers herself the least interesting Ironwood, it’s going to take a lot of convincing to get her to believe she’s the key to stopping the apocalypse.

Arne Steelsinger knows he messed up by not telling Layla the whole truth about his heritage. He’s willing to grovel to get her to the Elf Summit, but there’s a bigger problem he’s going to need to overcome; Layla is his mate, and she’s refusing to have anything to do with him.

Both of them will need to work through their fears and misgivings about their relationship fast because Morrigan’s last general, the Norse god Vili is coming for them all.

Vili wants his revenge on the Nine Worlds, and it will take Layla and Arne trusting the bond between them — and a wild pack of extended family, gods and fae princes — to stop Ragnarok coming early.

Please note, ‘Elf Shot’ is an adult paranormal romance that contains graphic violence, swearing, and sex scenes.

I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read, written by Alessa Thorn. But this has to be my new favorite! Her Fae Universe trilogy, and this Ironwood spin-off series are amazing. The focus on Elven warrior Arne, huntress Layla Ironwood, Norse myth (including light & dark elves, Úlfhéðnar, and SO much more), the threat of Ragnarok, and the fantastic Tolkien/LOTR references, felt like a giant, comforting hug and had me sighing from the first page.

All of her FMC’s are so relatable, and you can’t help but identify with each and every one of them, including Layla Ironwood. I might not be a curvy blonde, with even a single tattoo, nor do I hate the outdoors or camping, or doubt myself as much… but she’s still very realistic with her harsh self criticism, and I adored her character development. With Alessa’s writing you always get a delicious male character that balances the FMC perfectly. And Arne Steelsinger, might be my new favorite. 🫦What can I say, I have a weakness for sexy elven warriors. *shrugs* My jaw dropped as soon as he stepped onto the page in Heart of the Winter Prince, and his consistent appearances throughout the series, and then this freaking book, made me practically feral. Patient, kind, tattooed, dark haired, attentive, violent, Elven royalty… and if you appreciate praise, then look no further.

Basically if you love: Norse Myth, elves, fated mates, LOTR, fantasy romance, bear skin rugs (IYKYK)👀, or praise/words of encouragement, you will love this.

I also throughly encourage listening to the LOTR soundtrack and drinking mead while reading this.

I’m incredibly excited and can’t hardly wait for Ciara & Torsten’s story. 🐺

6/2/23 Just finished the audiobook and I can confirm, it’s amazing. This is probably my favorite book written by Alessa Thorn… because I just can’t get enough of The Ironwoods, Norse myth, sexy elves, all the nods to Tolkien & LOTR, and one of my favorite found families ever. Thankfully I still have Ciara & Tor to look forward to… and I can always reread The Lost Fae Kings, until Taranis’s book comes out! 😈

This is easily one of the most cathartic books I’ve ever read in my life. I had to stop myself from binging it in a single setting to savor each and every page (yet I still completed it in a single afternoon).

Elf Shot reads like the swan song for the girl I was before devouring it. In the words of FMC, Layla Ironwood:

“I am done feeling like a secondary character in my own life."

This is why I keep coming back to Alessa Thorn’s works. Her Fae Universe has always been special; not a week goes by where I don’t think about or recommend Wrath of the Fae. And when the spin-off series was announced, I read the first two so rapidly I’m not even sure I’ve taken a moment to adequately convey my love for Imogen and Charlotte’s stories.

Maybe that’s why I’m writing a soliloquy for this review. In the blink of an eye, the Ironwood spin-off series increased from one book to three. I’m in awe of how each book gets better and better. But Elf Shot…is more than sound storytelling and exquisite characterization. It goes beyond the seamless use of Norse lore while weaving in modern cultural references.

First, there is our heroine, Layla. My Layla. She’s imprinted on my soul from this day forward. To be the curvy, fierce, brilliant woman who constantly doubts herself and feels unworthy of love is something I know all too well. I often think of myself as broken and damaged goods, but I at least know I’m good enough for me. Then Layla said that; she spoke (or Alessa wrote) the quiet part out loud:

“No one willingly chose Layla to do the important shit. She was the backup, the researcher, the babysitter. It's why she had always chosen herself. No one else did.”

To read that in a book…to see myself reflected in a character so clearly…it fuels my soul. But there is so much more to Layla.
I love ballsy, stabby heroines with a soft side. Like Nesta with her smutty books or Bryce with her stuffed Pegasus. All the best FMCS have range, and Layla is no exception. Not only is there a softness within her to balance the hard, but there is a nurturing side. Layla is a hunter with an affinity for the very beasts she was born to kill.

Then we have our hero and love interest, the dazzling Prince Arne Steelsinger. It is rare that I see myself in both main characters, but that’s a testament to Alessa’s storytelling. Arne is the warrior and fighter with the checkered lineage. Constantly define by his absent father despite his mother’s efforts, Arne is constantly running from his perceived monster within. Always acting the part and performing for others, including himself, out of fear.

Maybe that’s why he found her. Layla. His mate. It was love at first sight, probably because like calls to like. But that doesn’t make it easy…As the good book says, love is patient…And patience is required for the slow burn played out in Elf Shot. This book is hate to love more than enemies to lovers. Yet the tension? The simmering? It’s worth it.

Both parties are fighting fate, attempting to ignore destiny. But the love between Layla and Arne is palpable. It’s been staring them in the face since their first encounter in book two. It’s made even more clear when Arne cockblock’s Layla’s date and ends with night a little Lady and the Tramp scene, Alessa Thorn style. And oh yeah, there’s kidnap and a quest. All due to the power of their bond.

At its core, that’s what Elf Shot is about. Love. In its purest romantic form and in a platonic sense. It’s a lesson in loving yourself and accepting love from others. And can we talk about familial love?! Readers of the Wrath of the Fae series will be happy to see the trio of fae princes in their ‘big brother’ roles. But don’t let that overshadow the sisterhood between the Ironwood sisters and cousins.

In terms of friendship, there is no one more loyal and loving than Torsten. He is my Osrick. My Cassian. My Khaz. And I feel like we all know he’s due for his own romcom (Ciara, I’m looking at you). And that epilogue?! I’m not ready for what book four has in store. Until then, I’ll be thanking the gods for the latest release in the Ironwood series. Alessa gave us a gift of beauty, wisdom, and enchantment. And if it isn’t clear, I’ll be reading Elf Shot again and again.

Meh. I didn't like it tbh.

The plot itself was actually kinda interesting but the MC Layla ruined it for me. And the pacing.

Having the hero Arne and the heroine Layla separated for like 10-15% of the book after he was kidnapped was super frustrating to me. Why? Because aside from planning the trip to rescue Arne, while literally all of those chapters leading up to them finding him could and should have been condensed. They didn't offer anything to the plot. It was more or less Layla being emotional, her acting surprisingly out of character by doing something dangerous and bold (tracking down the god Havi all on her own) and then lamenting on how much she hated camping and roughing it (which she wouldn't shut up about) while they traveled. There wasn't some special scenery described or anything. And sadly if the author meant to use it to bridge the gap between Torsten and Ciara for the next book it didn't work. Even with all the chapters wasted they hardly interacted so I can't say all the time with the MCs being separated felt worth it.

Layla though was my issue. I just didn't like her. And I didn't grow to like her either. She had all sorts of insecurities and though I understood them and what caused them I didn't care. Especially with her feeling like a lesser member of her family. She should have addressed that particular issue far sooner than when this book begins. She was just soooo annoying and her awkwardness wasn't quirky or cute at all. Honestly her loving elves and LOTR and being nerdy was the least of her problems.

And then as much as I liked Arne I felt his character was inconsistent. He came across rather average for an elvish prince tbh. And then we have him feeling and acting just as shy or awkward as Layla did at times even with the tips of his ears turning pink. And fine, if that's the personality he was to have then I'm good, right? But then somehow the author decided to let him be all alpha and dominant in bed when him and Layla finally have sex. Eh, what? Sorry it just doesn't compute. It felt out of character tbh and I hated that it ruined his vibe for me.

Otherwise it was simply an ok read. Nothing special.

I was so happy when Elf Shot released that I grabbed it instantly! Arne and Layla are a good match, even if Layla bugged me at times. She tended to take the “I’m not good enough” mindset in regards to her family and her relationship with Arne. I’m not sure why though because she was amazing! Her completely unnecessary self doubt as a character trait was my biggest complaint for this book. Personally, I found myself confused by the sheer number of characters in this story. Even though I’ve read each book in the series I was still lost at times. That is more of a “me” issue than a complaint. Just pointing it out since I struggled with it so much. There is a character list at the end of the book. Didn’t notice that until I finished the story though, so it didn’t help me at all. Overall I liked the book and will for sure read the next one when it comes out.

”You are never going to be free of me, Layla Ironwood. I claim you as my mate, and I'm going to keep you, treasure you, and worship you until Ragnarök fucks the world to ashes, and then I'll love you in whatever is left."

Layla is avoiding Arne and hoping he will find someone else to go with him to the elves. But Arne knows that there is no one else, it must be her. She is his mate and he has to find a way to save their world while also convincing her, they are meant to be.
_____________________________________________

Alessa Thorn has done an amazing job with each Ironwood book so far. Each one has its own story and couple but they all fit together seamlessly. I find each story has its own tropes and kinks, each problem has a unique solution and each Ironwood is completely different.

Layla is much more insecure than the rest of her sisters. She can’t quite grasp the idea that Arne wants her. She feels like she isn’t meant to have a big adventure like the others. This story and her perspective gives a much different view of her family and how they operate. She is kind of forgotten and just expected to do as she is told.

I don’t know, in certain moments, I’m truly upset with how she has been treated by them. I wasn’t expecting her story to be like that. I do think the way she defeats Arne’s father too is a little cliche. But not bad.

I’ll tell you what I did love though, Arne. He is so charming and genuine. A real gentleman, he gives you the vibes of elegance. Something you’d imagine of an elf. But in bed? He is dominant as fuck. He tells Layla exactly where he wants her and talks so dirty. It was so unexpected but perfect.

I love their communication. Layla is comfortable with explaining her wants in bed and she isn’t ashamed of saying she likes to be a sub. I can always appreciate when the author shows a very healthy sexual and emotional relationship.

This book also sets a lot up for Tor and Ciara. I’m very excited about Tor. He gives me those good guy vibes but is really funny. I also get the vibe that he is dark as hell too, more than he shows. Arne was a bad boy in bed but he definitely isn’t a dark character. We really haven’t had one in Ironwood besides Arawan and I want more.

OMG, as fast I have seen its online I needed the book. And yeah, I am the only one who had high hopes of this book but was quite disappointed?

Besides the story, at one point I got confused of the sheer number of characters I cannot match them anymore.

I loved the chemistry between Layla and Arne. For my liking the mating thing was to fast. First they want to go slow and in another second... not?

I understood Laylas under self-esteem and her nerdy side. Of course she had a enormous growth (and with a special someone the get easy flying aways) and I liked that. But overall I wanted to read more about them and how they get to know each other. I liked how the book started off, and yeah if you read the other ones you know what you get and what will happen. I liked the scene with the LOR Movie marathon and the conversations.

Yeah, well then the mating happened and it's all about 🌶️. Oh god, please don't get me wrong but it was like from keeping out of the way to friendship to mated henzy and to a war in 60 seconds. I was confused.

And then the fight? What. Did. I. Just. Read? IDK. I expected more and got a short story. Or it feeled like. In comparison the story was not important as the others. In my opinion Laylas book deserved better and a bigger bang was the others.

4.4 Stars: Invested
Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = 3rd Person
Characters: Layla (FMC) is one of the most relatable out of all the books I’ve read so far. She’s not my favourite but she’s relatable. She has a lot of insecurities that she’s working through while also having the temper the Ironwoods are known for. She’s the most forgiving of them, though… and I can see it. Arne (MMC) is just like Killian (Wings of the Night Prince), but less dramatic. I love Killian’s dramatics, just to note.

Plot/Story: I feel too biassed to mention too much here. I am loving this world and the way the stories flow from one to the next and keep the OG plot going while bringing in new elements. It’s my favourite kind of series continuation. The communication between Layla and Arne is unbeatable and definitely the best of the couples thus far.

Romance: Arne is sweet and shy, a great counterpart to Layla. He says some super adorable things and I like the way her confidence went up with him.

General: Love how we get little details about the MC’s, different ones. We get an age or a quirk or a middle name. They’re all very unique and very much their own person, the vibes change depending on who is around and it’s great. I also love how we get sneak peaks of the next book in the epilogues.

Special Mentions
Torsten is going to be great, I know it. Kenna is just watching her daughters get mated one by one and it’s hilarious.

Quotes I Really Like:

Overall:
I am an absolute sucker for shifter stories so I cannot begin to express my excitement towards Luna Cursed. We got some sneak peaks in Elf Shot of Ciara and Tor, and they both have attributes I love. Alessa Thorn has won my fantasy loving heart, and put her other series on my TBR.

was this a necessary book in the series or just a prequel for tor and ciara’s story? nothing really happened here. they didn’t even win the battle by themselves. gods did it for them. and the second evil guy escaped. so my question stands - why read this book? the answer - don’t.

this was the first book in this series i wanted to dnf. it was painful to read. i didn’t like layla. she annoyed me so much. she whined so much.

it was hypocritical coming from charlotte.
“it's dumb to fight over stupid shit when we have bigger enemies threatening to destroy us. You don't like him anymore? Fine. But be professional. You have a job to do, so do it, and then you never have to see him again.”

layla was a pick me girl. 😔

“Layla threw her hands up in frustration. "I just don't get why you want to. I mean, look at me!”

boohoo. middle child syndrome.

“No one willingly chose Layla to do the important shit. She was the backup, the researcher, the babysitter. It's why she had always chosen herself. No one else did.”

kill me now.

“I thought you liked Arne."
"I do! But he's a prince, and I'm just me, Kian. I can't let him tie himself to someone who isn't going to offer him any value. He needs someone who can be the princess his people deserve. Not a human who doesn't know anything about politics or whatever princesses are meant to know about.”

“i’m weird, i’m a weirdo and i don’t fit in”, - remember that speech from riverdale?

“I'm human and weird. Like there's so much weirdness about me, you haven't even scratched the surface.”

2022 I’m obsessed with these books!
Funny as book 1 of the Fae Universe was my least favourite of AT and yet every other book gets better and better. Maybe I need to go back and reread blood Prince as I think may have different opinion?

Anyway loved this instalment.
Layla struggles with her own self esteem as she always feels like the lesser Ironwood and yet she’s so brave and fierce. What I loved is it’s mentioned Layla is a curvy girl, with a soft tummy no amount of cardio helps. It makes her relatable on another level. Plus she loves tattoos and hates camping, my kindred spirit.
Arne the prince of elves sees past all Layla’s hang ups. I’ve never read a book when an elf is the sexy MMC, but I was totally down for it. I’ve loved him from when he was introduced in the Winter Prince.

I love the mythology references.

Get more insight into Tor & Ciara, setting up for the next book.
Also what was that between Apollo & Lachlan?? Please tell me there will be a Greatdrakes spin off.

2025 now having the Greatdrakes spin off it was cool to reread that first interaction between Apollo & Lachlan, their build up spans multiple books.

The blonde haired tattooed hunter sister who doesn’t feel as helpful as her sisters, she’s not very good at magic or fighting and has always put her family first.

The Elf prince was told by the fates that she’s his mate and that all of Elf kind needs her or the war to end all wars will come.

She’s geeky and cute with a love of Lord of the rings and any human Elf pop culture references she even took an online course to teach herself how to speak it.

The prince’s father is evil and wants his son to be just like him and uses mind control on him but if fully mated his father will no longer have that power.

She gets really annoying with her not feeling good enough for him.

Everything works out in the end I just felt like this book was kinda boring

Q: Betrayals?

THOUGHTS

📓 Arne mentions only really knowing Layla was his mate after seeing her murdering living beings. Written as a side of him finding a kindred spirit.

📓 Layla's string of emotions felt erratic, unrealistic and sudden like the author wrote it not too sure what Layla's character would do. Makes it hard to figure out her character as the reader.

📓 Romance seems to progress very quickly at the start. First kiss was in chapter 8 and Layla accidentally finds out she is his mate in chapter 9. Makes more sense with the quick plot change but would have been more impactful had there been more tension and time to connect.

📓 Considering Layla's main conflict (being unremarkable compared to her siblings) it would have made more sense for her, when facing personal challenges, to keep it hidden or struggling to find someone to talk to. A 'while she looks after others, who looks after her' kind of thing because that doesn't show in the book despite it being said to the reader over and over again.

Every time she was feeling down, her sisters (or brothers-in-law) were there, asking how she was, where she was and talking to her despite Layla saying 'they hardly notice me.'

Would have been a more impactful sentiment if there was a scene that showed it: where she is feeling emotionally uncertain and alone but goes to one of her sisters to talk, but sees that they're busy and leaves to deal with it herself. With more emphasis on feeling isolated as well. Would have helped with greater character development.

📓 Was hoping to see how the author took to the challenge of writing Arne's POV while under his father's enchantment and was disappointed when they didn't. As a result, the majority of the start (chapter 8-16) is in Layla's POV only. To be fair, the author does sneak in some information and interactions (about Ciara and Torsten) to set-up for the next book to fill the time.

📓 Didn't like how other characters kept pushing to Layla (who was still feeling uncertain at the time) that she should mate with Arne to make him stronger in the on-coming fight with Vili. Felt like putting a deadline on their relationship. Then the author pushes that Layla is in fact 'in love' and spends time justifying it by saying: "when it's the right person, time doesn't really come into it." which I don't know if I agree with

📓Felt a bit on-the-nose with a prophecy stating that Arne needs his mate to defeat Vili (the antagonist and his father). Or more specifically: "You need your mate, Arne. Unless you have her by your side, Midgard will burn and become ashes under Vili's feet"

📓At times, it felt like the author was trying too hard to push the diversity of its cast:
"it made her so happy to see the differences. Brown and black elves, short elves, curvy elves, tall elves. Elves with tattoos and piercings, elves who looked like they stepped out of a vogue shot, elves who looked like modern day Viking gods."

<< LIKED >>

📓Arne actually shows guilt over killing and torturing people while under Vili's enchantment. Considering how in previous books, killing was glorified, it was surprising to see.

📓They have an honest conversation about their relationship and fears/insecurities and decide together to take it slow

📓They talk about what they want and what they aren't comfortable with before sex

📓It didn't follow the expected progression like the other books in this series. Arne getting kidnapped (chapter 8) then brainwashed (chapter 12) was actually an interesting twist and there were parts of how their relationship progressed from there that I really liked. Plus there were down-to-earth romantic moments within the plot, like binge watching movies together, that the previous books hadn't allowed for their characters.

CONCLUSION
This was my favourite book in the Ironwood series. There were parts that I didn't like, some things that were a bit clique and told rather than shown or were too rushed (in my opinion), but overall it felt like the most realistic couple of the series. After that cliffhanger in the epilogue and all the hints to set-up for the next book I'm actually excited to see where it goes.

"I am done feeling like the secondary character in my own life."

I have been really loving reading about the Ironwood women in this series! Layla is a different kind of Ironwood though, because she feels like she doesn't fit in her family filled with powerful and intelligent women. When Arne asks her out for a drink, she is excited to have been noticed... But then when she discovers that Arne has lied to them all about his heritage she once again feels like she wasn't considered and lied to. So she avoids him completely... Until she can't anymore.

"No one willingly chose Layla to do the important shit. She was the backup, the researcher, the babysitter. It's why she had always chosen herself. No one else did."

This is a great "finding yourself and your own power" story. Layla really holds her own and is a strong and independent person, regardless of how useful she feels she is.
Arne is a great match for her! He doesn't want to step over any lines, but he also makes sure that she knows how important she is.

🏹 Fated Mates
🏹 Coming in to your power
🏹 LOTR galore ;)
🏹 New beginnings
🏹 Found family
🏹 Mating 🌶️🌶️🌶️

The only thing is that this book only moves the plot forward a very very small amount. I won't completely give it away, but if you're looking forward to a battle, you'll have to wait for a future book. I really did fall in love with these characters, but I wish they had a big more of an epic adventure.

I have loved everything I’ve ever read, written by Alessa. But I really thought that God Touched would be my favorite of Ironwood’s but Elf Shot just wiped the floor with it.

I was anxious to finally read more from Layla & Arne and this book was so much better than I expected. I mean LOTR references, my comfort movie? Yes, please. Now I need to go and find me some Thranduil jammies! 🧝‍♂️

I related to Layla on so many levels personally, it made following her journey conquering her inner demons, realizing her own strength and finding her own place in the world with Arne, even better.

And Arne Steelsinger? Hot, tattooed elven warrior?🥵 Can I order one for myself? Norway isn’t that far from Finland anyway. We are practically neighbors.

"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨, 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬, 𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦?" Is what made me realize that Layla is so much more like me than the other sisters have been.

I loved every moment of this journey. ❤️ I really liked the way the final battle was won. And after that epilogue I can’t wait to read next more Ciara and Tor! 🤩

I've gotta say, the books in this series just get better further on. I was honestly getting a little doubtful about finishing this series at one point, but this books definitely has changed my opinion. For one thing, (spoiler) she finds out about being his mate wayyy earlier in the book. Which means FOR ONCE, the characters are actually thinking the mating bond through, having reasonable doubt, before coming to any conclusions/decisions. And her reasoning was expected too - she's self conscious. And sure, there are books that overdo it (e.g. "I'm so different, don't fit in, etc, etc"). But this character, while saying she's the odd one out, has worked through her insecurities and has overcome them. And not just because a big, strong male showed up. There was substance.

I still have a bone to pick with these battle scenes. They are far too short, which is kind of sad, especially with the big build up. I will admit that they were written fairly well, regardless of their length.

Overall, this book was a great read. Good enough for me to refuse to study, so I could finish it tonight. I am looking forward to the next book, as we all know what couple will be highlighted next.

Another fantastic book in the series but the trope of fated mates not knowing their mates is pushing the freaking boundaries already.

We are on couple number six. All of them are family and close so it never occurs to anybody that they are having the exact same emotions, reactions, doubts and insecurities that all the other pairs had?

She's definitely trying to make the series work like that but in this particular case that didn't make any sense.

Overall though great story which stays in the characters and worlds that have already been created but giving you a whole new plot and nice twists and turns for those of us who have been reading the genre for years and need a little surprise. So that was awesome.

What wasn't awesome was the insecurity times 10 sections. This is a trope that many authors use and I just hate it. It makes sense in a lot of ways but sometimes it just drags on too much and you're like yeah get over yourself already. Anyhow she did and we have the story so there you go.

I think this is probably my least favorite in the series after Charlotte and the Magic for the easy resolution, but overall the series is fantastic and going on my favorites shelf.

My favourite of Alessa Thorn's fae books so far 😭 this book was total perfection

💫 Curvy FMC who's the family's peacemaker, who undervalues herself, and MMC who's scared of the dark magic in his blood - it was beautiful, the way they brought each other out of their respective reservations and made each other feel so loved

💫 So many LOTR references, it was amazing

💫 So many fun cameos by past (and future!) characters

💫 So many many swoony dialogues (mild spoilers below)

"My precious, precious, Layla," he murmured against her skin. "I'm going to make you so happy that you're never going to want to leave me."

-----

"Thank you for choosing me, Layla. For taking the chance when I know it scared you, when I have a monster's blood in my veins," he said. Layla slipped around so she could straddle him. He looked so emotional, his eyes soft. She cupped his cheeks and pressed gentle kisses to his lips.
"You are worth all the love I can give you, Arne. Your blood doesn't make you who you are. By all the laws, I have the first claim on you now," Layla said, remembering Alruna's words.
"You are my love. You belong to me and no other. No one is going to take you from me."

The writing is driving me nuts but I like the world building and formula.

I've enjoyed everything that I have read in Alessa Thorn's Far Universe and Ironwood series.
Elf Shot wasn't any different. The story is fast paced and easy to read as well as being absorbing and sexy.
Layla and Arne are paired together to help stop the 3rd general from the Fae Universe series and it's interesting to read the references from Norse mythology.
Were they my favourite couple? No I wouldn't say so. I felt less connection with them and didn't find them very memorable. However, that won't stop me from reading more books by Alessa Thorn.
Note: Even though these books are about different Ironwood sisters and their men, I would definitely suggest reading them in order. Each book is a completed story with no cliffhanger but there are exciting hints about the next story in this book.

Just like the other books in her Wrath of Fae and Ironwood series’, this book is fun, charming, and steamy.

I have been anxiously waiting for this installment to come out because… um… a FMC covered in tattoos who wears too much black who has self worth and expectation based anxiety and uses Lord of the Rings to escape and falls in love with an elf?? It’s about me.

I loved Layla, she was so relatable and was definitely the Ironwood sister I connected with the most.
Arne is the best. Grumpy on the outside but a little elf princeling softy in the middle. Plus we love a man who will marathon LOTR with us.

That being said, some of the connections and plot points seemed a little forced and convenient, but for a fast paced series like this it’s not a deal breaker.

I was so ready for Layla, who doesn’t love a tattoo obsessed nerd, who dreamt of being swept away by a elven prince, and Alessa did not disappoint with this book, this woman writes at the craziest speed I’ve ever known and we thank her for it!

This book gave us everything we could have wanted from a our elf prince, and yet another kick ass ironwood within her own right. I mean she speaks elvish…

We have;
-Forced proximity
-Fated mates
-Found family
-Elves, elves, elves!!
-Cameos from some of of favored characters
-Rescue!!

While reading this book it fast became my favorite of Alessa’s fae universe.

If you haven’t already, read it, I dare everyone who dreamed of fairytales and fairytale princes not to like this book.

Incredible. Action-packed. Hot. Wholesome af. Nerve racking. All of the above.

This book was a love letter to both Norse mythology & fandom culture. I LOVE when people nerd out about their passions & you can tell Alessa grabbed the opportunity to live out all of her LotR fangirl dreams in this book.

The thing I love most about Alessa’s writing is that she chooses a location/theme & immerses you in it for the full 200+ pages.

Like the pages are dripping in culture & you can feel the amount of research that goes into every single story.

Layla’s character arc was incredible & I loved seeing her establish her place beside Arne while embracing herself as a main character in her own life👏🏼

Ohhhhh my bb Arne, *AM I SWEATING*? Dis man & his ridiculously adorable blushing ears had me on the floor. But when he slipped into dark mode 👀👀

Loved the cameos of the comically humongous found family we’ve created throughout these two series & I. CAN’T. WAIT. For the next book. That epilogue was the worst & best tease EVER.

This is the third book in the Ironwood series & they do need to be read in order👏🏼

These books just keep getting better! Layla and Arne! I have been waiting for this book it feels like forever! I loved every single second. I just finished it and I already want to read it again.
I love this so much. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. Layla and Arne are perfect even if their relationship isn’t the entire time. I move the Fae boys being very over-protective brothers to Layla and Arawan too. Alruna is lovely and just how I imagined Arne’s mother would be!!
And, ahem, a wood chopping scene! PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!
Fantastic! Spicy at just the right times! So good. Next is Ciara and Tor, bring, it, on!!

I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. A lot of Layla’s character was made up of things I can relate to - curvy, invisible, chronic overthinker, insecure, thinks she isn’t worth love or doesn’t see herself as the main character (all super flattering, I know.)
Anyway, it made me feel super seen and really spoke to me - meaning this dang book made me cry and I was not expecting it and I’m kinda mad about it tbh (but like in a good way.)

Arne is hot, the spice is hot, and I’m a sucker for adding in mythology so there was some really nice Norse references in there and really intriguing setup for the next book :)

My only problem is, you head into a Supremely powerful God's lair, you super powerful family and super duper far Prince brothers left behind? Even when one of them give you a send off when you leave? I just don't get it/find it believable. I get it's Layla's story, and she's trying to find her identity beyond all those important strong people, but it still doesn't make sense to me/jive. At the very least Bayn should have joined. 🤷 Stillllll... Awesome book in the story, still Loving it and feel they just keep getting better and better!!

I had a feeling that Layla would be the one I would connect with the most. Even if parts of her personality are frustrating, I think a big part of it is because she is just like me. Lol, I really enjoyed this book, more than the last one. I only did 4 stars because I wasn't as into the love interest on this one. His personality was all over the place, one minute he's dominant the next he's a little softy and I just felt that if he was going to be a strong dominant partner he should act like it. Idk i just didn't find him as interesting or enjoyable as I felt a "mate" should be for Layla. Overall still a good book.
