Jamie is an author-illustrator who graduated from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth in 2008, going on to win a High Commendation in the Macmillan Children's Book Award. When not trying to tame his unnaturally fast growing hair or having staring matches with next door's cat, he likes drawing, colouring in, cutting things out and sticking things in. He sometimes uses a scanner and a computer, and too often is tempted to throw his printer out of the window. But he would just have to go and pick it up again. His interests are pretty wide and varied -- although he does have a soft spot for wild animals and things that go bump in the night. Jamie's illustration work includes Hamish and the Worldstoppers which was the bestselling children's debut of 2015 and Wilf the Mighty Worrier, shortlisted for the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards. Frostheart is his first foray into writing fiction.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review ❄️

And just like that it's all over, and the Frostheart has been on its last adventure. Ash and the crew have reached the end of the world, and witnessed the rise of the Devourer. As they race against time to find the final hope to save them all, Ash must confront some awful truths about the world before and unite everyone in Song. But will it be enough?

I've loved this series, following a boy who can sing to the perceived monsters of the world, in a landscape covered in snow and ice and it's a bittersweet moment to see it end. But end it has, and in spectacular fashion. We find Ash finally coming into his own, and stepping out of the shadow of his friends to take his proper place in the world. He's in a very difficult place at the start of the novel, one which makes him confront everything he's ever known and dreamed about, and it makes him a whole mixture of emotions. Add in the constant nipping away at his anger from the monstrous Devourer, and you get a boy who brims with confusion and doubt. Yet still he sets out to do what's best, with the kindest heart.

The crew of the Frostheart are also just as delightful as ever, supporting Ash in everything he does and making him know that he's a part of their family no matter what. The addition of Scratch (and even Jed) just added to the more light-hearted monents too, and cemented this group as one of my all time favourites. They bounce off each other so well.

In terms of plot, this doesn't let up in terms of action and adventure. From the first chapter we're thrown into chases with Wraiths and Leviathans as they fight to stop the Devourer from rising. We're slowly shown even more of this world we've grown to love and explore over the course of the previous books, building on that lore of the mysterious world before, hinted at from the first book onwards. We see how humans and Leviathans have become linked and exploited and gradually watch all the the pieces fall into place towards an epic final showdown. It was magically done, and I was hooked from beginning to end. The emotions I felt probably matched Ash, with a rollercoaster of highs and lows.

I particularly liked the journey into the Yeti lands, as we finally see more of Tobu's past and how he came to be with Ash. They're bond has grown so much since the first book, to the point where they both rely on and learn from each other in equal measure. To explore Tobu's home, and the atmospheric lands of the Yeti was an absolute delight.

One of the best children's books I've read. Ever. Highly imaginative, atmospheric and engaging. The Frostheart will stay with me for a long time.

This is the third and final instalment in the Frostheart series.

Shaard has been a menace dogging Ash's footsteps since he first learned of his true identity, and now he has finally caught up with Ash and the Frostheart crew. He is more dangerous than ever and has a new threat to pressure them with, in the hopes of making them bend to or break under his evil leadership.

I had previously read the first two series instalments but, somehow, let two years pass before continuing on with this final book. I returned to the series in its entirety and reread the first two books alongside this one in one day.

I feared I would become burnt out of middle grade or tired of my immersion in this world, but that never occurred. I remained intrigued by the mysteries of following the riddle to discern Ash's parents' whereabouts, fearful of the newly presented threats and unsure how they would be overcome, in love with the beautifully chaotic found family Ash discovered on his adventures, and enamoured with the icy setting and eager for more adventures in unexplored regions of it.

Reading this series has been a faultless experience. I have loved my time within this world and hope Littler will return to it, and these characters, in the very near future. My journey with them was enhanced with the gorgeous illustrations that featured in every single chapter, which were also crafted by the author, and aided in my immersion in this tale and the soaring of my imagination.

Goddammit Jamie, how dare you make me feel FEELINGS?

(seriously though it's been a long time I've hated a character as much as I did here that wasn't in fanfic, so chapeau to that!)

(also, I think every sleigh ever needs a sunstone to power their enjin like the Frostheart had in this book (and in 2 too!), because there was a lot of blasting speed all over the world, but no worrying about lack of sunstones, hehehe)

Absolutely loved this. It's 3:30am. I'm barely coherent. I'm freezing (honestly the weather was perfect for this book) and exhausted. It was worth it.

So when can I reread again?

This is definitely a case of me not enjoying middle grade anymore. If you're a big fan of middle grade I would still HIGHLY recommend this series, it just doesn't interest me anymore.

Ein toller Abschluss der Trilogie. Ich war sehr gern in dieser Welt.
Man lernt die Charaktere in „Rise of The World Eater“ noch besser kennen und lieben. Es war gefühlsmäßig noch spannender als die beiden Teile davor und ich war so gefesselt, dass ich das Buch kaum weglegen konnte. Also eine absolute Empfehlung!

I devoured this finale to the Frostheart series in two days. It was as usual adventurous with great characters and amazing illustrations. However I cannot give it more stars because I was too frustrated all the times because of the stubbornness and how everything needed to go wrong a thousand times until the last person learned their lesson.

Believathon IV: Escape from the Jungle. 4. Card 28. Your most recent purchase (middle grade, not christmassy)
A Game of Tomes: the Readathon || Origin Story: 3. 3. Winterfell. Read a book with wintery vibes.

I have been absolutely adoring the Frostheart series, so imagine my joy when I saw it on Netgalley… and then I actually got it!!! My TBR was instantly moved aside because I just had to read this book right away, and it did not disappoint.

Although this series is technically middle grade, especially this book doesn’t read as such. It definitely has the epicness of an adult novel, and the fights and difficult situations the characters find themselves in wouldn’t be some I would associate with children’s fiction either. Not that they wouldn’t be able to handle it. I think the fact that nothing has been dumbed down or simplified makes them enjoy it even more.

But there is so much more that is great about this book (and series). The atmosphere of the icy cold setting is created wonderfully, making you just Want to snuggle up in a warm blanket with some hot chocolate. The characters of the Frostheart’s crew are all unique and quirky and just a wonderful family you Want to be a part of. The magic system surrounding song is just so imaginative. The plot is epic and complex. The illustrations are gorgeous and making the whole reading experience just complete.

And this book specifically? It focusses heavly around (found) family, having flaws and being open to learn from your mistakes. I absolutely loved our travels through the land of the Yeti’s, and finally learning about Tobu’s past. I have always had a massive weak for this character, and seeing how his story gets resolved was definitely a favourite part of this book for me. I really appreciate how this story highlights racisim. And I very much appreciate the stuborness of certain characters… as frustrating as they are. The trauma they have suffered made them convinced of a certain idea, and they are Not easily swayed to another point of view. Again, not something I am used to seeing in middle grade, but it felt very realistic.

I don’t know what else to say about this book, apart from to just gush about it’s brilliance. Please just read it…

Middle grade adventure series are SO MUCH FUN. This does not disappoint. Also may I say PERFECT for the cold wintry weather. brrrrrr. This addresses so many 'adult' problems or rather problems explored in adult books like trauma, insecurity. In the last adventure, Ash faces the evil Wraith leader Shaard who plans to unleash the dreaded Devourer from its centuries-long imprisonment. Humans vs Wraiths vs Leviathans, travel onto Yeti land, uniting people of the Snow Sea—great adventures as Ash tries to find the truth about the Devourer

My word, it’s been an honour to be part of this crew and go on adventures with them. From the first page, you’re back with the characters you love in their incredible world. You meet some new faces along the way who add so much to the story and learn about some old faces too. This book sings of hope, of fighting together and the power of love over hate. I adore Tobu with all that I am. This was a rollercoaster of emotions and Jamie is an absolute wizard.

You know when you aren’t really feeling a book and then, when you pick it back up a couple of weeks later, you absolutely love it?
That’s exactly what happened with Rise of the world eater and I’m so happy about it!!!

This was all action from the start right too the very end. And somehow Jamie Littler still managed to pace everything, especially the ending, really well. The world expanded once more, as well, and we finally meet other yetis which I really enjoyed.

My favorite thing, however, was the emotion!
It was in this installment that I feel head over heels in love with the characters and I felt everything with them.
The dread that they wouldn’t be able to defeat the world eater. The sadness past mistakes have caused. The anger of not being accepted by one’s family. But most of all the love between the Frostheart crew.
I even almost teared up at the end because I was so incredibly invested in the story!

Overall, the only thing that’s left to say is:
Read it!!!

“Frostheart” by Jamie Littler (Book 3 – Rise of the World Eater)

⭐️It is a touching, adventurous, and kind novel that is perfect for sharing with young minds and all those who keep their inner children alive.

⭐️The Plot: We keep on following the perilous adventures of the boy named Ash. The kid and the courageous crew of the Frostheat set off on a journey to the yeti lands, where humans are forbidden. Ash faces a lot of dangers, but his faithful guardian – grumpy Yeti Tobu – is always behind the boy’s back to pull him out of death’s claws. Will Yeti be able to rescue the boy this time? Will all the riddles be solved? All the answers and an epic ending wait for readers on the pages of this marvelous, dynamic, and breathtaking novel.

⭐️The Writing Style: I read all the books in this trilogy. All of them are cute and touching. But the final one - the “Rise of the World Eater” – touched me and my son the most. It is easy and enjoyable to read. The dynamic pace, tense and touching episodes, wise morals, and a slightly appropriate layer of humor made this novel unforgettable.

⭐️The Characters: The novel has many characters, but the author portrays them all well enough to feel emotionally connected to them. My son’s heart and mine still mostly belong to Yeti – one of the characters with a huge “chest” of deep life wisdom, lessons, and everlasting morals that will never cease nourishing young minds.

🥹Fave quote: “Old wounds scar deep.”

“The world is full of people who will help you…who will take care of you, who will love you. You just have to give them a chance. But as long as you hold on to that heart, it won’t let you see all the love that’s out there waiting for you.”

☺️Would I read other books by this author: Absolutely yes!

⭐️My humble rating is: 5/5

Ever since leaving the Fira stronghold and joining the pathfinder crew of the Frostheart, Ash has been searching for his parents. The voyage has led him all across the Snow Sea to finally find his mother, a fierce leader intent on ending the leviathan threat, and untrusting of song weavers like Ash. When an ancient leviathan known as the Devourer rises human-kin vows to stop at nothing to protect the strongholds, pursuing war against all leviathans. Ash knows the leviathans are helpless against the Devourers hateful song and share the same goal as the humans but can he convince his mother to listen? Legend has it there is a way to stop the Devourer but the road is dangerous and will require everyone to stand together to save the world.

Rise of the World Eater is an intense and hopeful end to the Frostheart series. Filled with danger, high stakes, and a plea to shed hatred it was an emotionally satisfying read. Ash is a wonderful hero and it's great to not only see him come into his own but stand up and ask for compassion and an open mind to those seen as "others". This installment gave insight and depth to many characters that highlighted the importance of gaining perspective as well as the measure of growth. Journeying to the Yeti lands was a thrill as was Ash finding his true family. As with any conclusion to a series, my feelings are mixed on the ending itself. The epilogue left me wishing a few other ideas had been realized or we'd see another tale to see them through. It's been an amazing voyage on the Frostheart with Ash and the whole crew. While I'm sad to see it end I can't wait to see what Jamie Littler does next.

If you enjoyed the earlier two novels in this series you'll love Rise of the World Eater. It's definitely a series I would recommend to read in order as each title starts right where the previous finished. With gorgeous illustrations throughout and an engaging plot that tackles prejudice brilliantly you're sure to enjoy the adventure.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy to review.

Rise of the World Eater
Overall Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ (4/5) or 8.7/10

Characters - 9
I love all the character dynamics and each character is thoroughly unique and thought-out. :)

Atmosphere - 9
Cozy but in a bitterly cold wintry landscape kind of way.

Writing - 10
I have no critiques, just phenomenal. Successfully avoided any overused tropes and cliches while keeping it very entertaining to read. Enough detail to visualize the scenes but not too much so as to bog down the action.

Plot - 8
Some points where I could tell what was going to happen but incredibly unique.

Intrigue - 9
I was thoroughly intrigued the whole time.

Logic - 8
Most of it made sense but some of the magic stuff was a bit beyond my tbh

Enjoyment - 8
Amazing end to the series; would recommend to my friends.

Frostheart is one of my favourite middle grade series ever - this is fast-paced epic fantasy for kids, basically, and deserves a lot more hype. This concluding book kicks off at a gallop and continues its wild ride right to the end. We visit new locations, uncover even more revelations, and the finale does not disappoint. There's a strong found family theme, with heart-warming relationships and high-stakes conflicts. I teared up a few times.

The books aren't absolutely perfect but all three of them get 5 stars from me, book 2 being my favourite I think.

What a beautiful conclusion to such a great adventure. A wonderful example of how family isn't always about blood. Life isn't all we dream it to be, but still can be just as grand. True bravery means standing up to those whom we love when we know we need to do what's right. And your true family will ALWAYS make sure you're not alone. The Voyage of the Frostheart was the first middle grade read that I read out loud to my boys. It kind of feels sad to see it end. I cross my fingers hoping that Jamie will return to this unique world. I recommend this book for ALL ages.

Thank you!!

I really enjoyed this series, mainly because it is so utterly amazing to me that the author not only writes his own story and draws all of the illustrations as well! I thought it was a great end to the trilogy, tackles a lot of middle grade issues in adults listening to children and vice versa, and is so atmospheric. I think the only thing that gets me is they tend to drag just a little too long.
