I wish all the Marvel books could be THIS good!
I do not post all my weekly marvel readings over here usually, but this one was especially deserving and setting a new standard for me, so I wanted it into my reading challenge too!

This review is for volumes 1-18. I am writing this as I read it & will continue editing it as I go.

This is the Darling Series of Dawn of X that received the most praise. For me, it was a tie between this & New Mutants.

Most of the hero-oriented comic book Youtubers I follow share opinions on this series: The new Mr. Sinister (who's personality reminds me of Q from Star Trek) is hilarious, Kwannon (the W is silent, according to an interview with a Marvel writer) is the main focus, carrying over from the Fallen Angels series, John Greycrow gets good character growth, Nanny & Orphan-Maker are funny, & Empath is annoying (an opinion they also have about Kid Omega in other Dawn of X titles).

I have always read Marvel & DC for the villains, so this might explain why I find Empath & Kid Omega funny, Nanny & Orphan-Maker to be annoying, & Kwannon has been consistently dull throughout Reign of X. I guess most readers like her because she's a sexy Ninja. That's fine, Mystique (not in this series) fulfills that role for me without being so Emo & bland. Betsy Braddock as Captain Britain was my least favorite character in Excalibur, so I guess I'm just not a Psylocke fan. In my eyes, Sinister is the character who holds this series together & my enjoyment suffers or escalates depending on his absence or presence.

This got me mixed feelings. The first arc where the team are on rescue mission to fight Madelyne Pryor is damn really good! Lots of action from start to finish all they ever do is fighting non stop with the Madelyn's possessed slaves. Segovia's art is damn beautiful! I think he is now 1 of my favourite artist.

Second arc where the team are on the grip of Arcade & Mastermind's mind-control is so confusing. I was lost the whole time like "what the hell is happening here? Which one is real and which one is not? And who's controlling who?". Well i guess that's what people hate about X-Men story. It is always a story about mind-trapped by some telepathy mutant. That's the thing about it! It is always comfusing. So there goes my missing 1 star.

Final arc is really good! Love it! 👏. Hellions VS. Arrako's creature! Action-packed from start to finish. And the fight was really good! Awesome ending!

Krakoa's second Bad Boy comic is by far the better of the two, so it's a pleasure to have it collected all in one small omnibus.

This volume shines primarily because of the characters. Psylocke, Greycrow, Peter, Nanny, Havoc, and Empath all shine as distinct voices who we really want to root for or against, and they definitely grow over these 18 issues.

The plots are also classic X-Men, from the Marauders to the Right, with a bit of Murderworld thrown in between.

And we get excellent machinations of Sinister, suggesting the future of HoX/Pox and hopefully setting up this year's SoS crossover.

Overall, a great, very rereadable volume.

This was one of my favorite ongoings during the early Krakoa era, but it reads even better in collected format. Mr. Sinister forms a team of C-tier characters that are written with both humor and empathy, instantly transforming them into some of my favorite X-characters. The overarching storyline with a lot of machinations from both Sinister and the Quiet Council is really good as well. The way those two come together in the final couple of issues is really heartbreaking. Finally, I really loved the art as well. Has a couple of different artists, but the style remains consistent and I love those vibrant Krakoa colors.

8.5(maybe 9)/10

Wow, what a gem!

Zeb Wells made me care about characters I didn't know about in such a short time. I love this team and their dynamic. And I think the smaller stakes action set pieces are really smart ways to push the story forward. I highly recommend this.

Hellions is emblematic of what worked about the beginning of the Krakoan era. I had little to no knowledge of anyone on this team, and yet it ended up being one of the best books of the line. It’s a shame that Zeb left.

Even better on a reread after the whole Krakoan Age ran its course - the first four issues are still needlessly grimdark, but the other fourteen are a mix of humor and horror exploring the ways mutant powers may push people into evil and how their hearts can, sometimes, pull them back to the light.

While not the most spectacular story arc of the krakoan era, Zeb Well's Hellions was nonetheless an enjoyable read. Mister Sinister's antics were spot-on, and the depiction of his misfits Hellions was movable.

Very funny, enjoyable, fast-paced - my favourite of the Krakoa era X-books that I’ve read thus far, along with House of X / Powers of X.
