When You Love Me

Rate this book
Losing her twenty-nine-year-old best friend had Zayn lost. She was supposed to have her ride or die by her side as they entered the successful phase of their lives. Only now, as a successful attorney, and living what should be her best life, Zayn is forced to deal with the grief of losing the one person who saved her from her crowded six-sibling household and strict Muslim parents.

Burying his twenty-nine-year-old daughter was not how life was supposed to be playing out. Orion's entire world revolved around his daughter, Adira. She was the reason he left the streets at eighteen and got his life together. Adira saved him, and it broke him that he couldn't do the same.

In the midst of watching her best friend suffer, feelings that she thought she grew out of came rushing back to Zayn with being in such close quarters with Orion. Orion should not have been noticing the sexy, grown woman Zayn turned out to be. She was his daughter's best friend, but with basically living under the same roof for two years, both caring for his daughter, Orion couldn't fight off his attraction to Zayn. The two of them coming together could be a mistake, built on grief, or it could be what ties their souls and make their hearts whole again. Only time could tell how their story ends.

4 “Shortie Doo” stars!

I love Shay Davis. Periodt. When I saw this release and that it was a 20 year age gap, best friends Dad etc.. I was all in! There are some special circumstances in the beginning that I won’t spoil, but this book was so EVERYTHING! I kept seeing Denzel Washington as Orion the whole time and it gave me extreme feelings 🥵. The BDE was strong with this one..just the way I like it. This was a sweet, spicy romance that filled me with warmth that my heart needed. Nothing like a good May to December romance to can the flame.

3.5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Orion and Zayn find themselves in a precarious situation. These two have been secretly attracted to each other for years. Adira was well aware of the attraction between her daddy and her bestie so, after her death, she leaves each of them a letter giving Zayne and Orion her blessing and encouraged them to act on their feelings for each other. They didn’t waste a single moment. Zayne and Orion jumped headfirst into their relationship and never looked back. It was interesting watching these two navigate a new relationship while grieving the loss of their loved one. Zayne and Orion found solace in each other which, made it easy for them to fall in love. I loved how they were able to lean on one another and how they handled the passing of Adira in such a healthy way without becoming codependent. While their coming together was effortless, it was not without drama. Considering Orion was 17 years older than her, Zayne’s very strict Muslim parents did not approve of their new union. But, she didn’t let the fallout from her parents sway her one bit. Orion was her man, and she was gon’ stick beside him. Just when things are going great between them, here comes fate on that BS. She’s either gon' to do you right or do you dirty and, in this case, she did Zayne and Orion real dirty. Lawd, my nerves were frazzled the last ten or fifteen chapters of this book. Whew! Shortie Doo and Bear took me through it! I really wanted to be upset with Zayne but, I understood the situation from both sides. No one was going to be happy if certain choices had been made. Honestly, it was a no-win situation for both of them. I loved this couple. They were able to get past their grief, family drama, and other unexpected issues and still find their HEA. I was excited to catch up with Serena, Kira, Blake, and Haneef. Glad to see Kira and Haneef are still together and thriving. While I wasn’t necessarily invested in Zahi’s character, I do want to know if the baby is his. Ma’am, how you just gon’ leave the baby before y’all even take the paternity test?!!!!

Orion & Zayn

This was different….Adira pushed her best friend to have a relationship with her father. Orion knew Zayn since she was 13, now at 28 he wants to have a relationship with her….I love the community in this book, the sister & brother hoods….this couple built an amazing tribe around them to help cultivate their love. I also love the relationship between Zayn and her brother Zahi….I think his story will be next….because he definitely has something to say.

solace 🫶🏾

Orion and Zayn found themselves in an interesting dilemma when Zayn’s best-friend and Orion’s only child passes away after a battle with cancer. Their attraction to each other could not be missed and they were faced with the question of, “should they or should they not act on their feelings.” Luckily, they solved the equation very quickly!

This was a different story from what we’ve seen from Shay Davis but nonetheless it was a sweet and satisfying story. Orion and Zayn were grieving an important loss but they found solace in each other. I was worried that they would become codependent on each other but that was not the case. I loved how they processed their loss in a healthy way. This book definitely hit close to home for me but the author handled the storyline with grace and care.

“You give me solace, but I know we gotta get back to life, and can’t be up under one another every moment.” 💙

Orion’s character was sweet. He was an amazing single father and he literally changed his life around to be everything for his daughter, Adira. He has BDE and a little ruggedness to him. He matched Zayn’s energy and whew those love scenes were hot 🥵.

I loved Zayn’s character; she is my best friend in my head. I loved that she was in sync with Orion, she stood up to her parents, and even during a traumatic pregnancy she still had the strength and courage to journey on.

I literally almost cried the last 40% or so of the book. Shay Davis definitely painted the scenes with great execution. It was raw, heartbreaking, and bittersweet. Orion and Zayn had a pretty uncomplicated relationship but the pregnancy definitely tested them. I felt every emotion possible. I loved how the two had such a great support system during that time. This was a beautiful story.

“I will always want you. You saved me, Zayn. And I will forever be in your debt. But more than that, I will forever be in love with you, because you were made for me. My heart has never understood love like this, and that was because it had yet to be introduced to you. You’re my world.” - pass me the Kleenex!

Baby Zayn was about to drive me up a wall! Omg girl “f them kids” 😩 seriously I was on edge thinking the worst. So much grief between Zayn and Orion that I was struggling to see that they would make it. Zayn was so selfish and tbh I think it worked for her but I don’t think she realized the stress she was causing Orion. Orion is zaddy and he was a good look for Zayn and I loved how they connected through their grief and were reassured through Adira. Zayn family situation sucked but I’m so glad her siblings stood by her especially Zahi. With the way this book ended I hope we will be getting answers on Zahi’s situation and an update from Zayn and Orion!

Shay for the win! ❤ Although the story begins with Adira being very sick, and you knew the end was near, her presence was felt throughout this read. Adira did her best to prepare her bestie Zayn, and her dad for life without her. She used her last bit of strength to push her two favorite people together, with warm laughs, jokes and heartfelt letters, before she slipped away! 💔 Zayn was my girl! Growing up in a strict Muslim home, didn't give her much opportunity to spread her wings and find her way. But, befriending Adira allowed her some normalcy that she desperately needed. Orion was devastated when he lost his baby girl. He just knew he would not be able to push forward through his grief, but wait..... he had Zayn! He quickly realized that his feelings for her, that he tried to ignore were right at the forefront, waiting to be explored! Orion was a man about his business! He did not care what anyone thought of his pursuit of Zayn, she was going to be his! I thought Zayn would give Orion more pushback to begin their relationship, but she was onboard. They were adorable, and you could feel the love they had for one another. I loved the relationship Zayn had with her brother Zahi. Those two were hilarious with their banter, but no one could come between them. Now, Zayn's parents ughhhh! I get you have your beliefs, but damn, this is your child! You can just disown her for not doing what you say, as a grown woman? Wow!! 😡 Ma'am when Zayn's diagnosis was revealed and things began to go downhill, my anxiety peaked and blood pressure rose! What?? God would not do this to them right?? I wanted to be angry with Zayn for the seemingly selfish decision she made, not giving Orion's point of view any thought! But, she an angel on her shoulder, and must have known that she would be ok. My heart broke for Orion! All he could think about were worse case scenarios, and didn't want to believe he was given happiness, just for it to be taken away! It was a rough go for these two, and I was frightened as to what would be the outcome! But, they came out on the other side stronger than ever! That ending tho! Talk about coming full circle! The irony of it all! So hoping Zahi's story is next to find out how he deals with this. Also, what is wrong with Audre? Those twins are a hot mess, and are going to be a handful for sure! This read just set us up for several books about the Abdi family, I hope! (hint, hint) Great read! 👍👍👍

good read

This was a good read. I thought it would be a little more hiccups. It got straight to the point. I loved how it hit on several real life issues from both genders.

Absolutely loved it

This was a beautifully written story about two people who lost someone dear to them and during process with a little divine intervention from that love one found an everlasting love. I don’t want to give too much away but just know it is worth downloading and you will not be disappointed. I would love to maybe get a future story on how Zahi navigates through life after the challenge that he is now facing hint hint Shay Davis.

Mature love at its finest🤎🤎🤎

These characters went though the fire and left their hearts open to receive from one another and did it on their terms. Zayn and Orion are not what you expect but everything you need in a love story. Their path is not traditional nor is it conventional but it is theirs to discover what’s possible for them.

There were so many heartfelt moments, disappointments, rejection, and loss for Zayn and Orion which the author depicted so well. I could feel the intensity and emotions so much that it got me choked up at what they had to endure. It was a lot, but the love for one another transcended the unpopular opinions of others allowing them to be free to love the way they wanted.

This story did not disappoint, there are some sizzling fire, hot, sexy scenes in here that need a X rating stamped on them. Bear and Shortie Doo was tearing it up in these pages and what they were doing to each other should definitely be a how to F guide. I was hear for the read! All of it!

Many good moments but the funniest scenes has to be between Zahi and Zahn there sibling bantering was funny and beautiful and the game night. I laughed so much, I felt like I was there and wanted to play as well. The joy and laughter was exactly what they needed to feel connected and normal.

Listen, this book was a great read, sweet story with lovable, mature, successful characters that had me wanting to be in love with somebody’s daddy.

I recommend this book, especially if you love love❤️

Love has no age

Loved the story and the concept! Orion was a grown man who knew what he wanted! Zayn knew what she wanted as well, family can hinder you or stump your growth! Zayn was able to speak up for herself when it came to her parents! Orion & Wayne hit a road block but they manage through it, though tricky and pulled out many emotions!Family and friendship was strong in this story as well. Loved the epilogue, looking forward to Zahi story!

Excellent Read ❤️❤️

Ummm Shay Davis, ma'am I'm going to need more. I need to know what's up with Zahn and the baby. If Jamison is going to find someone to tame his behind maybe it can be Audre (I'm just saying). And these bad a$$ twins lort they need their own story. Lol
This was a great read you did it again Boo ❤️❤️

I enjoyed the overall story. The age difference was something to consider, but the fact that Adira knew that Zayn had this crush made it ok. I liked that Orion was a take charge type of dude. Zayn and Orion both needed a soft place to fall while grieving. The treatment of her parents was so unfair stoked in iron fist traditions. Glad they were able to maintain a growing respectful bond.

not a fan

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I don’t know if I’ll be reading more as I got annoyed fairly early on in this one.

1. There are quite a few typos and things that are unexplained or written as if readers should just know who someone is. You can’t name a character who walked into the room and not explain who the character is when this is the first time that we’re being introduced to them.

2. In anything that I read or review, one of my biggest pet peeves is when authors write different cultures without accuracy. And as a Black American Muslim, there’s a so many glaring inconsistencies:

1. Zayn is a boy’s name.

2. In a traditionally Islamic and ethnically conservative Somali family, you are most likely going to hear a variation of Hooyo and Aabo/Aabe in reference to parents.

3. My BIGGEST pet peeve. The term “garb” and “garbed up” to refer to what Muslim women wear are historically Black American Muslim terms. 9 times out of 10, you not about to hear someone of another ethnicity say garbed up when they have their own terms to use. Abaya, baati, jilbab, diraac - many terms for different dresses but “garbed up” is culturally not a term used by Somalis.

4. This is silly but real: Muslims are not perfect but authors if you want to depict authentic Muslim characters who don’t practice, please remember we will do almost anything BUT eat pork 😂🤮.

Usually I can overlook typos but as a Black Muslim and as someone who thinks researching culture is important before depicting it (i’d rather people just not write characters with cultures they don’t get culturally competent beta readers for) this was definitely annoying to read.

However, I do think with some cleaning up and editing that the story has plot potential that I would enjoy.

Beauituful Love Story!

Orion and Zayn are both grieving the loss of Adira, his only child and her best friend. During the grieving process they find solace in one another and fall in love. Zayn’s parents want to control her life but she wasn’t going for that causing them to cut her off. She had to go through her pregnancy and one of the scariest times of her life without her mom and I felt so bad for her. I’m glad she stood up to them though. Her and Orion relationship may have been unorthodoxed but they loved one another and that’s all that matters.

What's meant to be...

The background don't always dictate your life's outcome. Zayn who's family's religion and beliefs would have her life all panned out could be no further from her reality. It's a battle of life and death to fight for freedom within your own family. Being optimistic, She took on her own control over her life. Orion was just the balance and love she needed to complete her journey thru life. You never know who, what, when, where or how just be open for your perfect timing...

In love ❤️

I love this book. Zayn and Orion story was so beautiful. I didn't like what her father did and it pissed me off that her mom didn't stand up for her daughter because no man or culture could make me abandon my child that I spend nine months bonding and bring into this world, I love how Zahir stood by his sister side and not let his parents influence stop him from been there for his sister. I love Orion ❤️ he was so all about loving Zayn even when they had that disagreement with her risking her life during her pregnancy. 💖

This was unhinged. The romance was fine until they brought up how they got together in the first place then it was cringe. I also don’t like how they jumped into the romance. Y’all not gonna build it up or nothing? And how the grief was handled was so… bland. The book was repetitive too. It didn’t feel seasoned or poetic or flowy. I also was not a fan of the conflict in the book or how it was handled. The main character was almost 50 and this didn’t reflect that. The relationship didn’t reflect that.

I have been impatiently waiting for Zayn and Orion’s book and I was not disappointed! My girl Shay Davis came and gave all that I expected as well as some I didn’t expect but as always, I was here for all of it!
I’ve been told by Shay plenty of times that I’m hard on female characters and well… Zayn ain’t it for me🤷🏾‍♀️ don’t get me wrong she started off cool but babbby her decisions had me deeply side eyeing her! Now Orion yeah, this seasoned man had me from page one I absolutely loved him he is definitely bae material he ain’t knocking my Neefy Pooh out the top spot but he’s up there 😆.
Y’all, know I ride for all that Shay Davis pens but this one took me through it! The grief, disappointments, acceptance, and love kept me hanging on until the last page. I finally was able to take a breath once I read the end but knowing her and a specific character that was introduced is letting me know that more greatness is sure to come, and I can’t wait!

Great story

This was a really good story!!! I hate that Adria died and left then heart broken but I loved how there love perviled. Orion was a great man to stand with Zayn even when his world was falling apart. I hate Zayn went through so much to bring her baby into the world but she did what mothers do put our kids first. This was just a heart felt story.. I would like to find out what happened with Zahi ....

Orion and Zayn

Orion and Zayn had an emotional journey. Although they were in an age gap relationship, it was never and issue between the two of them. You could feel the genuine love they felt for one another.

The ending was a shocker regarding Zahi. Hopefully, he will get his own story.

Zayn and Orion

This story was bittersweet. They was brought together because of grief, but the love they have for Adria is what got them to this point. I believe they were soulmates and Orion had to wait for Zayn to grow up. The near death experience for Zayn made her understand that live every moment as it comes.❤️

I loved how Orion and Zayn loved each other. Just goes to show that you can’t help who you live and it can happen when least expected. Glad Zayn was stubborn and kept her baby, now he’s thriving. Hopefully, Zayn’s parents will come around and Zahi grows up. Can’t wait to read his story next.

I'm usually not a fan of older man younger woman relationships but Orion changed my mind. His age is not a factor because he cares for Zayn deeply and he fought the urge to approach her initially. Zayn's parents made me do dadgum mad 😠😡😤! Acting all crazy because they can't control that girl smh. Zahi is too funny 🤣🤣 I'm ready for him to get serious though.

I enjoyed, but wanted more …

Orion is grown-grown which I love.. Zayne young but wise, in some ways. I love their love, but the story developed way too quick for me. Maybe it wasn’t intended for her to spend as much time allowing us to truly know Zayne like we got to know Sareena, Blake, Haneef and Kira. My preference is to get in a little deeper.

Couldn’t Stop Reading

Sooo good!! So engaging, funny, sexy, and nasty!! I loved Orion and Zayn together so much. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about that two of them together, but they fit so well. I wasn’t sure if they were going to make it at one point. That series of events truly tested their relationship. I am hoping there is a 2nd book, because I got questions that need answers!!
