Kol is not the heir. He is the spare, and as such, he does not take his duties all that seriously. Even after the attempted poisoning of his father, he continues to break the rules. Until one day, his little stepbrother follows him out of the castle and, in a terrible accident, is lost in a river. After the service for his lost, presumed-dead little stepbrother, his stepmother promises to make every day a living hell for him. While he feels he deserves the punishment she will deliver to him, he has no choice but to run away to Earth. Earth is where he finds another portal to another realm, where he discovers the Academy for Lost Souls.

A very brief read but very informative. This intro into this universe gives lots of room for stories to emanate from, and I look forward to finding out what the author has in mind. I, for one, can’t wait to get my hands on book one. The universe is well done and filled with characters that have an excellent background story.

I look forward to the first book in the series. I give this short story five stars out of five stars.

An introduction to Kol for the Academy of Lost Souls series. The spare to a royal family whom somebody wants dead. He makes a tragic mistake and flees. Unless you plan to read the series, skip it. It's backstory which provides some understanding why he's at the academy.

Entertaining. Haunting. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable.

Kol is a spare to a royal fae family. Can't blame him for wanting to rebel a bit. After a tragic accident, though, he flees his home in search of something new. I'm definitely intrigued to check out the series now.

Fairly well written but puerile

This author has some good ideas but they are executed without a great deal of power, motivations are too simplistically portrayed.
