Maya : Self-Deception of Blind Watchmaker

Acharya ji frequently insists that complexity is not a virtue in spirituality. So, while contemplating my life, whenever I stumble upon issues as complex as a watch, I do realize such a complex intelligent design of my problems requires an intelligent designer. And who else can be such an intelligent designer of my problems except myself?

I am the watchmaker.

And why am I creating such complexity in my life? Well, the complex process of natural selection of all my problems is unconscious and automatic; it is a blind one – working without foresight or purpose.

I am the blind watchmaker, creating as complex problems as a watch in my life without foresight or purpose.

How come?
Answer – Maya.

Maya is said to have two aspects: āvaraṇa is about your failure to see reality, and vikṣepa is about seeing, projecting, imagining stuff that does not really exist.

Maya has layers of loops like a watch leading us to self-deception every alternate, every second and every hour.

This book leads us into reality using the same Maya’s way of concealing to reveal the path of liberation. It addresses three crucial aspects of our life –

1 Authority – Maya Conceals Self- Deception.

Maya's paradox: one needs to be spiritually resourceful in advance to be aware of scarcity around oneself. That is why the right guru chooses you, you do not choose the right guru.

Excerpts from Mundaka Upanishad based chapter “Guru and Maya”.

Guru and Maya are one in a very fundamental way. Maya is trying to make you forget what you can never forget, and the guru is reminding you of something you have never forgotten. Both are just playing games with you. Therefore, they are hand in glove in the game which is called saṃsāra. One builds the saṃsāra, the other dissolves it. Both of them are needed to keep the show running.

2. Decision Making – Maya Reveals Self-Deception.

Only those words are useful that can take you to silence. Dhammapada.

Excerpts from the chapter “Two Birds”.

All kinds of incompleteness are ideas. Completeness is not an idea. If completeness is an idea, it is another kind of incompleteness. If the world is giving you your identity using your incompleteness, then you don’t exist. Where is your independence? Where is your independent existence?

3 Discipline – Awareness of Self-Deception leads to clarity.

Clarity facilitates repetition. The more subtle clarity is, the more smooth pursuit of discipline will be.

Without any support and yet eager to attain freedom, the fools only nourish the world. The wise cut at the very root of this world, which is the source of all misery. ~ Ashtavakra Gita, Chapter 18, Verse 38

The importance of clarity and discipline is beautifully explained by Agaya in the following poem -

While responding to a questioner in You Tube video, Acharya ji mentioned that this book was supposed to be published last year but due to number of genuine mistakes in book content by volunteers, they had to recycle around 3000 printed books and had to return pre booking amount, etc.

If Acharya ji and his dedicated team can cross ocean for us to provide authentic spiritual content, then we can definitely take few steps for ourselves to give right direction to our own life.

Rating- ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2

As the author rightly said, Maya is a commonly used yet most misunderstood spiritual concept, Shri Adi Shankracharya in his famous composition of Bhaja Govindam says “मायामयमिदमखिलम् हित्वा, ब्रह्मपदम् त्वं प्रविश विदित्वा: Knowing this whole world to be under the illusion of Maya, you try to attain the Absolute”, myself coming from the lineage of “Shrimad Jagadguru MadhwaCharya (1238-1317) who propagated dualism(dwaita) thoroughly astonished reading this book that spoke and clarified my doubt towards Maya.

“When it comes to Maya from my Guru teaching and experiences One of the popular metaphors employed in the pedagogical and didactic exposition of Advaita Vedanta is that of the rope and the snake.” I always had a tough time understanding this concept but Acharya Prashant with his examples gave clarity on this long pending doubt.

Interestingly author termed Maya as SHE. Through this, SHE (Maya) author clarified her existence, illusion, society, biology, reality anything and everything about her (Maya). Though there are many analogies and quite different understandings about the concept of MAYA, Prashant Ji is well-versed and successful in discussing this complicated yet must-learn concept. He brought many references to sages and scholars and explain their ways and helped in the real manifestation of this concept.

Predominantly the book goes as a Q&A type and in many instances, I tried seeking knowledge as a Listener when AP (Acharya Prashant) tried to explain to the individuals. There was no concept or sutra/shastra left by the author that isn’t discussed in this book Viz Atma, Paramatma, bondage, liberation, Vedanta, wisdom, bhakti, Maya, ignorance, illusion, shining, shadow. bhakti, consciousness, etc.

All the interesting examples quoted in the book clarified the respective chapter’s teaching and prepare yourself ready for the very next chapter which the author wishes to discuss. I will call this a disclosure rather than calling it a book. If you sincerely wish to feed a JUMBO FEAST to your mind no other book can fit other than this when it comes to the concepts of Maya and its associates.

Verdict:
No doubt this book is a must for any human who is a Sanātanī (सनातनी) and I sincerely wish this book made available in all spiritual libraries and reference documents and to include in any education syllabus where these concepts are being taught. Undoubtedly Prasanth Ji was a gem in drafting this book and did 100000% justice for the subject he picked.

I recommend these three chapters from this book
1. How to know Someone’s real face ?
2. The Ninety-Nine Floors of consciousness
3. Three states of Consciousness, Death & Liberation.

My Favourite Quote (s):
There are many in this book including the quote referred by eminent personalities and also Vedic/Upanishad references. The one that grabbed my attention Is

“Real beauty is not only an absence of ugliness but also a total absence of that which we usually call beauty”

Notes:
1. Be open-minded and read the book to grasp the concepts dealt in this book.
2. Scribbling Pad and Pen are a must.
3. This book is for everyone irrespective of lineage/dharma they follow and is not limited to only “Vrudhapya: Senior Citizens”

I salute Acharya Prashant Tripathi for bringing in the theories who is not only a VEDANTA TEACHER but also an ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST & SOCIAL REFORMER, I sincerely wish to have more and more knowledge to quench my quest on “Gnana Bhakti & vairagya” through his writings. I feel I am blessed to read “Maya: I Bow to Thee, You Cannot be Overcome | Timeless Wisdom in a Modern Context” and to write a review for the same.

Acharya Prashant talks about Maya, or illusion. The concept is that world is full of illusions. Some more definitions of Maya given in the book are - Anything that compulsively pervades your mind space. Or that which distorts your perception - makes you see things where none exist or fail to see that which definitely exists.

The prevalent saying which goes on that The world is an illusion or the world doesn't exist actually means that the world doesn't exist in the way we think it does. We create our own illusionary world for us with our biased and skewed perceptions and interpretations, which are all in our mind, not in reality.

" We have prevalent believes which are as dogmatic as organised religion : greed, career, progress, and knowledgeability - these are the religions of today. "

Having read Karma, completing this book was a heavier effort for me due to more than necessary intellectual discussions of little practical utility. There were lot of archetypal discussions between spiritual gurus and spirituality obsessed shishyas in the middle pages of the book which I didn't enjoy and had to drag through them.

The book sheds brilliant light on the workings of the ego-self and how it tends to cling to illusions to sustain itself or to thrive on them. It talks about the nature of the ego, like that of a thirsty being, wanting to attach itself to any concept, including Nihilism. It talks about our own struggles in the battle against it - like creating dummy egos in petty situations and then defeating those and claiming victory. It also gives us some effective ways to keep cheating the ego and keeping it in check.
Parallely, it teaches us to accept the necessity and inevitablitly of the ego as a means to function in a world, but in a way of a servant, who obeys the master, and helps the boss grow and reach higher goals. Not the other way round like the boss who burns himself out to maintain his employees.
The takeaway is "Give the ego an object that will make it drop all objects. That is the knack"

One of the interesting concepts in chapter 10 is that of 'purposeless observation' or 'choiceless awareness' as powerful tools in the process of navigating the maze of Maya. Trying to determine what you gained from some observation limits us from many learnings. Opening yourself up to know anything makes you passively attentive to a treasure trove of subtler things. That is knowing without Conditioning. Sometimes where you wonder 'From where did this knowledge come to me!' it has come to you from the passive attention. The goal is to make it a way of life.

My favourite chapter was chapter 23 'Keep Moving even if it's Dark'. A really convincing, imaginative plot of a city inside a jungle which you want to escape. It was a good powerful dose of healthy motivation to keep fighting Maya, or and also know when to stop and retreat.

In the end I believe the crux of all spirituality books and teachings is the same, keep getting rid of your conditioning, be self aware and keep reaching for the Truth, with a strong belief that reaching 'there' is possible. Books will keep guiding you to navigate the slippery slope to reach the top and answer your doubts.

Book Review " Maya" by Swati Mathur
Perpetual intelligence, modern context and vernacular metaphor makes this work eccentric. Readers gets an enriching experience as they go through varied range of questions that they could relate and empathize. Each query raised by the seekers is very well explained with real life examples that everyone can corelate with. If you are looking for the better understanding of self and life, you must read this book.
WHY THE TITLE "MAYA"?
Most of you have heard this term on daily basis, most frequently used yet most misunderstood. Acharya Prashant has made an consequential effort to make us understand the real meaning of the term "Maya" as it play out in our day-to-day life.

🔖The subjective perception of universe exists at two levels: meaning (MAYA or ILLUSION) + fact (ABSOLUTE or TRUTH). The world is an absolute MITHYA ie, it doesn't exist in the way we perceive it to be. Instead, it is an entirety of BRAHM or ATMA ie, an absence of the personal self known as the SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCER. So, the more you get rid of Maya the more you dissolve, and the more of what it remains is the Absolute. This concept of mind dissolution is known as 'NOWHERENESS OF TRUTH' ie, mind came from nowhere and goes nowhere.

🔖We humans are enslaved by Maya by our 'OWN WANT' which comes from body, past, conditioning and influences. They are driven by a mix of external slavery [the materialistic 'CONDITIONED'] and internal slavery [the subtle 'REAL']. The 'inside' is considered as the 'REAL US', while it is really the farthest that one can be from oneself. We humans are essentially MAYA PERSONIFIED and greatest victims to BETRAYAL OF SELF-REALIZATION.

🔖MAYA is the very freedom of BRAHM to be and then not to be. Brahm (stateless), being the source and commander of Maya, is timeless, birthless and deathless, while Maya (stateful) has the dimensions of time, birth and death. The EXISTENCE OF TIME is characterized by CHANGEABILITY. If you change, then you are living in time and space...that's DEATH. The only ETERNITY possible is UNCHANGEABILITY of being a WITNESS OF LIFE.

🔖The ultimate objective of life is to break-free from the chains and bondages of Maya. That's MUKTI or SURRENDER of 'I'-sense identified with body towards EXPERIENTIAL CONCIOUSNESS...the D-IAEE-zation of oneself from the infectiousness of dual and conscious mind states! [D-IAEE: dis-identification, dis-association, dis-engagement, dis-energization]. And finally, be a SPIRITUAL VIRGIN!

Maya by Acharya Prashant is a book that tells us about the concept of Maya in detail in around 352 pages. Complied with the format of a book now from the interactions and questionnaire he had with the audience earlier, and so the book follows the questionnaire format throughout the book. Divided into three parts and 35 chapters, the book talks in detail about the concept of Maya, the new age spirituality, and wisdom.

We all have heard about the word Maya and thus prejudices, interpretations, and some stereotypes always come with it when we hear this word. And so, a real understanding of the concept of Maya is important. The author has tried to present the concepts in simple words for the readers to understand easily and make them feel connected with the topics. The author has a deep knowledge of the topic and concept which reflects in the book. The quotes and lines at the start and end of each chapter are interesting and give food for thought, and imagination, and help in picking up the interest of the readers. There were many things in some chapters that I liked and some lessons conveyed through the stories were great to read which helps to understand the concepts better.

Although in some places, the information feels overloaded and repetitive, making it a slow read as well. The questionnaire format at places felt underwhelming and the need to articulate it in the form was felt so that people can understand it as a reader instead of understanding it as a listener, which is the original form of the concepts here. The book also wasn’t able to keep up my interest for long.

If you are someone who is looking forward to reading something about this concept, and able to take things useful for you out of all, you can check out the book. I would give this book 3.25 out of 5 stars.

❄️The book explores spiritual concept of "Maya" by Acharya Prashant, Vedanta philosopher and teacher. Every chapter of book is based on interactions of people and their life queries with author. Maya plays an important role in our daily life. Every chapter starts and ends with a quote that is inspiring and motivating. The author has explained every question in most elaborative form, that is easy to understand and implement in life.

❄️Maya is anything that occupies our consciousness, anything that compulsively pervades our mind-space is Maya. Maya is said to have two aspects - Avarana and Vikshepa. The first one is about your failure to see the reality and the latter is about seeing, projecting, imagining stuff that does not really exist. All that you can think or experience or speak of is Maya.

The author has added excerpts from Gita and Upanishad that add the spirituality. The book explores many life lessons that we can learn and implement to overcome sufferings and chaos of life. Some of my favourite lines from book are :
"You require more knowledge in order to get rid of limitations and falsities of pre-existing knowledge."

"Bhram is that nothing which dissolves
everything."

"A Problem is only to the consciousness that is associated with the problem."

"Realize, and you are free."

"Nothing happens without your consent."

"Humility can afford you a second look at everything in life."

"Perception by itself is the projection you inflict upon yourself."

"Truth is a great ending, a finality, a peak, a closure."

"We are born in the world of pain."

"The brain is the vessel, pure consciousness is infinite."

❄️The book holds great wisdom and life lessons. The conversation of questions and answers will keep you hooked till end.

Almost all of you have heard of the word Maya. Generally, it is used, though incorrectly, to denote illusion, delusion, or some such thing. But the theory of Maya forms one of the pillars upon which the Vedanta rests; it is, therefore, necessary that it should be properly understood. -Swami Vivekananda

Generally, Maya refers to fraud, magic, trickery, or deceit. While Maya helps protect us from the ugliness of life, it also hinders us from knowing our true identities and overcoming our limitations. Maya keeps us under a spell that cannot be easily broken.

Acharya Prashant, through his book, “Maya: I Bow to Thee,” narrates the characteristics, real meaning, and role Maya plays in an individual life. The author explains that Maya is not just a concept; it’s impacted our life decisions daily and has different materialistic influences on life.
The book has thirty-five chapters, telling real-life experiences, and each chapter holds individuality; readers can pick a random chapter to read. I like one thing about this book: how the author encourages the readers to find a balance in life.

The writing style is lucid and easy to understand. However, I feel some parts of the book are repeated, making it slow-paced, and readers will lose interest.

Overall, I think this book is not for every reader, and the ones who are more into spiritual reading will find the book helpful.

Maya — what does this word signify to you in spiritual context? Maya by Acharya Prashant is a collection of interactions that the author had, in the form of question-and-answer sessions with his audience, which have been translated to one chapter each in the book.

It is interesting to note that the audience who posed these questions are from difference backgrounds and each question has been answered in an elaborate manner by the author that it spans an entire chapter.

Sample these questions — How can someone without deep knowledge of Vedanta understand about Maya? Is there a need to make a big deal of Maya? What is the solution for a complete cessation of all problems?

There are a total 35 chapters and at the end of the book there are additional resources by the author that are available over the internet that can be accessed by interested readers, who want to further explore the concepts discussed in the book.

It is hard to explain or review this book by any common person. Though the language and narration style are simple, the concepts explained are at deeper levels of philosophy and I would suggest this book to only those who are seriously interested in understanding these concepts.

Novice readers may not find it difficult to read or understand but may not truly appreciate the plethora of information hidden in these pages.

This is new to me, in every sense. Even though I am a very contemplative person, I could never relate myself to a spiritual person. I perceived Vedanta as Indian philosophy, and I wanted to know more. What is Vedanta?

The author is tackling the common man’s doubts/queries about Maya. Is it a thing only for spiritual beings, or is it a thing for everybody who has life? When you are done reading, of course, you are still in doubt. But, the difference is that you now know to phrase your basic questions on the topic and address them. Maya gives you a better idea of the subject – Illusion and the absolute. I like the references and stories he used in his speeches. The narration is simple.

As the book is a compilation of his earlier talks, the repetition factor is very high. At times, I felt a loss of connection with the author.

The book initiates a Question & Answer session within us. It is helping us to look within ourselves and deduce the reality ourselves, rather than preaching to the audience/reader. The book is reminding us to reflect on our thoughts, action, and life and ultimately understand the Maya. This is also about breaking free from your comfort zone, a reminder to make effort to seek the truth and liberate oneself from illusions.

Maya is a term for deception, magic, trickery, or fraud. While Maya shields us from life's unpleasantness, it also prevents us from realizing who we really are and overcoming our limits. We are kept under a spell by Maya that is difficult to escape. Through his book, Acharya Prashant describes the traits, true significance, and function of Maya in a person's life. According to the author, Maya is more than just a theoretical idea; it affects our everyday life decisions and has many concrete consequences on them. This work is unusual because of its constant intellect, contemporary setting, and common metaphor. As they read through a wide range of issues to which they may identify and sympathize, readers have an engaging experience. Each question posed by the seekers is thoroughly answered with examples from real life that anybody may connect to. You must read this book if you want a greater knowledge of who you are and what life is all about. Although the author did clarify several Maya-related themes, I occasionally found the narration to be repetitive and unclear.

The very word MAYA has different meaning in this present world, yet the author Acharya Prashant wants the reader of this book to understand what exactly it means. Maya - anything that occupies our consciousness is maya, anything that compulsively pervades our minds-space is Maya.
The entire book is a Q and A session  asked by people and Acharya Prashant answers it. I have been fond of Jiddu Krishnamurti's video's and books a few months back and that's when philosophy based books started to interest me.
It is certain many of us don't take time to read and understand these concepts of Maya and the materialist world of ours. Also, these books have to read a small phase which should raise questions within us and in turn we need to solve it to understand it better.
It's always within us - All the questions and answers. This book was a good experience of reading for me. There's few more chapters for me to read. And it was worth a read for me. The stories narrated made the concepts to be understood in an easy way.

the term Maya is so commonly used yet it is such a misunderstood term, it is used to define illusion, delusion and such things but in reality, it is very important to understand Maya, since it comes out from our text, Vedas

Maya is by extension, means the powerful force that creates the cosmic illusion that the phenomenal world is real. it protects us from evils but also is a hindrance to finding someone's true identity and motives.

I feel this book is interesting and anyone with a spiritual as well as a philosophical bent of mind will enjoy this book, On a side note, I am quite impressed by the author, who did fairly good research on the subject and has covered the topic step by step. I did not have the feeling that anything in this book is missed out.

The writing style is lucid but I feel this book is not for everyone, anyone who is open-minded and ready to grasp new things with a philosophical and spiritual bent of mind will enjoy it

🍁 The Book is Divided in to Thirty Five Chapters. Each Chapter can be Read separately But Reading them in Sequence would Help a Reader in Understanding The Book in a much Better Manner.
🍂

🍁 The Author Has Written about Materialistic aspects of life in an unusual manner in the book. The author has written about having the bigger and the balanced approach towards Maya that is material aspect of Life.
🍂

🍁 The Language of the Book is Lucid. The Writing Style of the Book is Slow - Paced. The Cover of the Book is Fabulous. The Title of the Book is an Absolutely Appropriate.
🍂

🍁 The Book is a Bit Boring at some instances as The Author has written everything in Detail. The Book is an Informative Read and has Spiritual Aspect as well.
🍂

| PERSONAL INSIGHT |  - 🌸 Although, I enjoyed Reading the Book, the Story could have been Written with a Fast - Paced Writing Style And That Would have Made the Book a Bit Shorter and an Intriguing to be Read.

This book is based on spirituality which talks deeply about Maya and all its aspects.

There are 35 chapters in this book which talk about the things which are related to Maya or a part of it.

Maya is a vast subject and a bit confusing but this book will educate you and get you rid of any confusion regarding this subject to a great extent.

The book also contains quotes and verses from scriptures.

The cover page is simple and appropriate.

The language used is easy but still it is not possible for everyone to understand the concept of Maya through this book unless they read this book thoroughly many times.

This book has ample knowledge to offer, but it might not appeal to everyone, but everyone should read it once.

The title of this book intrigued me a lot when I first came across it. Maya is an interesting term that I had just a vague idea about. However, after having read this book, amid all the 5 stars this book has gotten from other readers, I feel a little hesitant to admit that I found this book just ok.

While the author did explain a lot of concepts related to Maya, I found the whole narration very confusing and repeating at times. At several places, I thought to just DNF the book but somehow I kept going and was able to finish the book with great difficulty. The author has taken excerpts from his speeches from several past live events and compiled them into this book. The problem with such a compilation style is that the reader feels that the author is talking in the third person rather than directly to the reader. That leads to a lack of engagement with the reader which eventually makes it boring to continue reading. I feel this book could have been written better. However, if I just focus on the content, this book does have a lot that will help readers to understand the concept of Maya a little better.

A journey from "What is Maya?" to "What is not?"

Dear Reader,
There are many spiritual books on various topics, but none on Maya.

If you are interested in the below questions, this book is a must for you.

* What is Maya?
* Does she exist on her own?
* Am I really helpless when she attacks?
* Is there a point in life where you are completely free of her?
* Whether the game is to be free from her or to know it?
* What comes first-closeness to Truth or knowledge of Maya?
* Why does Kabir Saheb sing so much about Maya all the time?

You may start with a question: what is Maya? However, after reading this book, you may end up with what is not!

Consisting of 35 chapters, this book is pretty much a written version of the various conversations the author has had with his audiences who are from different backgrounds. The questions asked are intriguing and the amswers given are thought provoking.

WHAT IS MAYA?

The word Maya isn't easy to define. Different people find it synonymous with different things. Indeed, it has too many layers to it and the author has made a conscious effort to rightly summarise it.

Although the chapters seem simple and easy to understand, the book has been explained in so many levels that it's hard to comprehend it entirely in one read.

The book has been written in question and answer format where the master Acharya Prashant answers the queries of the audience. This particular book is compilation of the questions asked related to Maya. The questions are incorporated randomly with no proper sequence or order. At times it becomes difficult to correlate or form a cohesive idea.
Anyways it is such a complex topic of discussion and a highly subjective opinion that reading the book once is just not enough. You won't even form an understanding. It is better to keep coming back and absorb as much as possible.

Such an intriguing and mind-blowing content, makes you see Māyā not merely as a concept, but it being obvious, yet ignored thing in our day-to-day lives. For example, in chapters 12 (How to know someone's real face) and 13 (Mind invents dummy problems to look at itself) of the book, the author makes us see how our mind fools us into believing certain things, and how we allow certain things to happen simply because our own value system considers them to be important. I am currently reading this one, and yet to be amazed as the chapters proceed!

Spirituality is a warfare isn't always an easy topic to discuss and explain but author Archarya Prashant does a good job of walking through the scriptures and answering the life questions. Maya is a book geared to help people discover the meaning of spirituality. The author illustrated his points in such clear, easy to understand ways that really helped you to grasped the thing he said. The cover and title  of the book is apt to the content of the book. All of us must have heard the phrase Moh Maya, but how many of us have ever tried decoding it? In this book Maya, Prashant Acharya beautifully explains Maya. This book is a very different kind of spiritual book that I have read. The writing of this book is as sticky as velcro. In Maya, the author clearly explains what Maya is and how one can be free from Maya. I recommend everyone who wants to take a step into the spiritual world read this book.

That book is epic , Saw this book first time due to my girlfriend. I am not a spiritual personal but when I just read one random page of this book , it took me away , I was like absorbed in this book. Flying like a swan.

Feeling grateful after receiving another compilation of Wisdom. No doubt 'Karma' and 'Ananda' is close to my heart. However, each passing chapter of Maya putting me under light mindset.

Thanks for unburdening
