If action and adventure in the mountains and smoking-hot nights spent in front of crackling fires are your thing, 1-CLICK XTREME RULES and continue the Xtreme Ops BINGE.
Bruce Winston and Cleo. Winston is coming back from a huge setback abd Cleo is dealing with some major family news that is life changing. Their chemistry is noticeable, but the acting on it is slow to start for a variety of reasons. Danger is a result of Cleo being a good citizen and it follows her for the rest of the book. The whole team takes part in helping Cleo with her dangerous situation and with her grandfather Max who I adored. This story is an action packed military type romance, but it also is great about addressing emotions and life altering challenges that many people face individually or with their families!
When your HEA is in trouble then you create an avalanche of hurt
Xtreme Rules is the ninth book in the Xtreme Ops series and is the story of Cleo Carver and Bruce Winston. Once again Em Petrova has given the readers an interesting story, great characters and a lot of snow melting hot passion. There is suspense, danger, romance, fun, attraction and more all woven together in a well written story. It was an entertaining read.
This is book nine of the Xtreme Ops series and the main characters are Bruce Winston, part of OFFAT (Operation Freedom Flag Alaska Tundra), a division of Homeland Security, who is hoping to be signed off as fit to return to his unit after being badly injured in a pipeline explosion, and Cleo Carver, who has moved back to help look after her grandfather who has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and works as a ski instructor on the local slopes trying to make enough to help support them both and pay for his care. Winston used to be a ladies man, but his injuries are extensive and go all the way down most of one side of his face, down to his waist and below. He likes to hide the damaged side of his face from others and now has no confidence in picking up a woman, believing his chances of love and a family are long behind him! His fellow teammates, Penn, Lipton, Broshears, Paxton, Day and Cora, as well as others, are all waiting in the local bar to see if he succeeds in getting signed fit for work, to celebrate or commiserate as the case may be. Luckily, he has finally be signed as okay to return to duties for this secretive unit and is fitter than ever, having pushed himself to recover. He sees an attractive woman, Cleo, at the bar, but turns away, thinking no woman would want him with the scars he has now. Cleo had a frustrating day on the slopes with clients not turning up and leaving her short, so she had gone to the bar to destress before going home. She saw Winston, surrounded by all his fellow brothers-in-arms, clearly celebrating something. When her fellow ski instructor Rhett tries to buy her a drink, she tries to knock him back politely, but it seems he doesn’t understand her repeated negative replies every time he has seemed to turn up just as she does on the slopes or out and about. Her friend Lynn, who also worked in the bar, steps in and starts taking to Cleo, leaving her able to refuse Rhett once again. He is handsome and seems to have girls flocking around him all the time, but she has no interest or spark with him and wouldn’t want to date a co-worker anyway. Winston however, she got an instant feeling about, even though she never even spoke to him. She had seen him on the slopes months back, but he hadn’t been back since his injury. He hires Rhett to take him up the slopes for a refresher, but that just gives Rhett more ideas about some help to get Cleo to go out with him! Their connection is off the charts but Winston is just Rhett’s wingman and doesn’t want to break the bro code. Winston is soon involved when a problem arises with her grandfather and he is able to call in his friends to help her. His team are all tasked with searching for a known terrorist that has been seen entering their area of operations, just as he and Cleo are getting together at last. Somehow, the terrorist gets a hold of Cleo, placing her in danger and Winston is desperate to find her and hopes she is safe. She was trying to warn someone off a dangerous part of the mountain due to avalanche risks and ended up a captive and all alone. Lucky for her, Winston is already worried and looking for her and is soon joined by a number of his fellow teammates as they search for Cleo and the terrorist. Winston and Cleo’s romance had only just gotten off the starting blocks when danger came calling, but it would take a lot more than a terrorist threat to keep the two apart! Cleo manages to stay clearheaded for the majority of the time, even if she does make a couple of ill informed choices when thinking she is helping others. I loved how the team all took to her grandfather and included him in everything, even if he could beat the pants off them at chequers! A lovely neighbour helped her to look after him whilst she was working, but there should have been an earlier call into the armed forces for support, considering her grandfather was a veteran. Steamy romance, but also a lovely story of survival against the odds and caring for others. I had to laugh at Rhett’s idea of answers to the ancient civilisation’s quiz at the pub! He may have had the looks, but he certainly didn’t have the brains, unlike Winston, who was the complete package and perfect for Cleo. Lots of action and adventure in the frozen mountains of Alaska, with a like-minded outdoor loving pair who love skiing and the mountains. I look forward to reading more of this series and getting to know all the other people on the team and the loves they find. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Xtreme Rules is Book 9 in author Em Petrova's Xtreme Ops series. Last we saw special forces operative Bruce Winston, he had been fighting for his life and settled in for a long road to recovery after being too close to an explosion that left sections of his face and upper torso horribly scarred. Xtreme Rules catches up with Winston as he is ready to be discharged and resume working alongside his Xtreme Ops brothers and sister. His body has healed but his emotional scars run deep. Once a "man whore", now he can barely stand to look at himself in the mirror. He has resigned to the fact that no woman would ever was to be intimate with a man who looks like him.
Cleo is a ski instructor in a resort. She spends her days teaching others to ski and her nights caring for her beloved Grandpa Max who is suffering with Alzheimers. She is constantly worried about finances and how she will manage for his care as his disease progresses. She has no time for dating.
Rhett is a good looking fellow ski instructor who has taken a liking for Cleo. He is handsome but thin on brain cells and common sense. Cleo is not interested, but Rhett fails to give up hope that one day she will agree to date him. Winston is a client of Rhett's whom Rhett enlists to be his Cyrano de Bergerac as he tries to win over Cleo's affections.
Will Rhett be able to win over Cleo with Winston's help or will Cleo see through Rhett's glossy veneer and realize that the person worthy of her attention and love is the man quietly sitting at the table trying to hide his facial disfigurement? When Cleo unknowingly stumbles into danger and is kidnapped, Winston set out to save her. Will he rescue her in time? And if he does, will their time together give them time to allow for their small spark to ignite?
I believe this is the finally book in the Extreme Ops series. I truly hope that I am wrong because I have truly loved EVERY PAGE of this series. To date, this series has been my favorite series written by Em Petrova, which speaks volumes because I have read and really enjoyed every single book written by this author. Xtreme Rules has all of the requirements I long for in a book: Hot Alpha hero and intelligent, beautiful and capable heroine; sizzling chemistry; intriguing plot that seamlessly carries me along until I devour the entire book in a single sitting; and a strong, likable and fascinating cast of secondary characters. This book definitely checks all of these boxes and so many more. Xtreme Rules has been my favorite book I read so far during the summer of 2022. Definitely worth the read and spending your hard earned money buying.

After months of recuperation from the pipeline explosion Bruce Winston of Xtreme Ops has finally been released to rejoin his team. Leaving the doctor's office, he goes straight to the bar where they agreed to meet no matter the outcome. He arrived waving his discharge papers among the cheers of the team. It had been a long hard four months for Winston with much of his outward personal confidence being shaken do to the scaring from the burns. He saw a beautiful woman at the bar, but he was careful to keep only the good side of his face turned that direction, and he definitely would not be going up to talk to her like he would have in the past. Winston returns to training with the team. Also, he spends some time on the slopes where he runs into the woman from the bar, Cleo Carver who was a ski instructor. Winston gets asked by one of the other ski instructors, Rhett to play wingman with him to help him get a date with Cleo. She makes it very clear that she does not have time for dating with a grandfather at home with Alzheimer's, Rhett will not give up. Winston continues to run into her other times as well on the slopes and hiking near her home. Then she accidentally got mixed up in Xtreme Ops next case while she was out hiking one day. What a mess. Love and leave them Winston has learned the error of his ways, but he feels no woman will ever have him now. Cleo sees past the scars, but Winston does not see her for his the scars. Will they get together or will Winston continue to be in his own way? A beautifully written suspenseful romance with plenty of action, mystery, intrigue, and romance that will grasp your interest from the very first page to the last.

I said I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't stay up all night reading an Em Petrova book. Of course, I did it anyway.
Winston's initial scene started off with a level of suspense. Then add in all the emotions he was dealing with after his rehab. I could only feel for him. Cora's entry made me wonder how long Winston would be able to hold on to his insecurities. Instant chemistry between Winston and Cora.
I liked Cora. She had a lot on her plate. She was pleasant to Rhett. She was allowed one not so bright move. Girl. Where was the sense of self preservation?
The level of suspense increased by this time, and the hint of danger was lurking in the background. Cora and Winston had their journey of increased suspense, danger, and steamy moments.
I was all in, until Cora made the stupid move. Why is it they always ignore the verbal warnings, the entreaties about safety, the suspicions, the need to avoid their protection, so they can wander off into a dangerous situation with absolutely NO training determined to save the day? Why?
This honestly was at 5 stars for me until that point. It had all the elements for me. What Cora did was so ridiculous it made me want to throw my Kindle. At minimum, it made me want to stop reading, but I had gone too far.
Needless to say, there were a couple of additional twists along with the inevitable HEA. The Cora situation was a pet peeve of mine. It was an entertaining read.

Operator Bruce Winston was left scarred and insecure after being caught in an explosion, before that he’d been nicknamed ‘Romeo’ and now he’s afraid of the reaction he’ll get from women. After successfully asking ski instructor Cleo Carver for a drink, his handsome associate/Cleo’s co-worker horns in and begs Winn for help talking to Cleo and Win agrees.
Stretched thin caring for her grandfather and having no other family, it’s easy for Cleo to tell Rhett she isn’t interested and has no time to date. But if Winston even acted like he was interested it might be a whole different answer. When Cleo hikes up a nearby mountain, she sees a cabin is occupied and shouts a warning, then her world goes black.
After receiving a call from Rhett saying Cleo’s missing, Win can’t help his worry since a wanted arms dealer was spotted near Cleo’s neighborhood and she’s missing. Searching for Cleo, Win finds her tied up in a cabin with no clue how she got there but she and W take the chance to be open about their feelings. Win gets Cleo to safety after finding the arms dealer’s stash. Safety doesn’t last too long since the dealer has all that’s needed to find Cleo. Rating: 3.75stars
My favorite author has delivered another fantastic addition to her Xtreme Ops series. This one is about Bruce Winston and his dealing with the fact that since the pipeline explosion that left him burned and scarred on his face and part of his body, that he will spend his life alone because no woman would want to look at him and not cringe. Then he meets Cleo, a ski instructor and he develops feelings that he thought were long dead; but her co-worker, Rhett, has a crush on her and won’t take her no’s seriously. Rhett implores Winston to be his wingman to help him. Winston is keen to recognize that Cleo has no desire to date Rhett. When a terrorist is discovered on the mountain and Cleo is in danger, Winston and his team rescue her. A well written storyline with some humor, danger, suspense and the development of deep feelings between out hero and heroine. I loved the characters as they were real and believable. Great addition to this series.

Bruce Winston was burned badly in an Xtreme Ops call-out when a terrorist blew up a section of Alaska pipeline. He had a long recovery time, with his scars over his body from his face to his groin area on one side. After getting okay to rejoin team, his buddies took him out to celebrate. He sees Cleo at bar, recognizing her from the ski slopes he used to frequent, but with his scars, didn't talk to her...Cleo works as ski instructor, cares for her grandfather, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and tries to avoid fellow ski instructor Rhett who is always asking her out. He does nothing for her, and as co-worker won't jeopardize job to go out with him...but when she sees Bruce Winston with Rhett, she's interested in the muscular hottie with the fresh scars, but Bruce promised to act as wingman for Rhett to get Cleo to go out with him...and Cleo wouldn't be interested in a scarred freak like him...or would she??? Bruce Winston is on Xtreme Ops team. He got hurt in an explosion and has been off on sick leave recuperating. Cleo Carver is a ski instructor who is taking care of her grandfather who has Alzheimer's. Bruce finds Cleo very attractive and so does Rhett, who is another ski instructor. Rhett asks Bruce to help him out with getting a date with Cleo. Bruce reluctantly agrees because he thinks he is damaged and she wouldn't go out with him. Little does he know that Cleo doesn't want to date Rhett because he is a fellow employee. She actually is interested in Bruce. The scars on his face don't bother her at all. Cleo accidentally comes across a terrorist who wants her dead. Bruce will try and stop him, but at what cost. Will they be able to save each other? Lots of action in the snow covered mountains, and lots of heat. I got an advance copy for giving my honest opinion. This is one awesome story. I do not rate this based on the erotica factor, as that is a turn off for me. But her suspense, mystery, intrigue and characters are so spot on that I read her books every time they come out. To be honest I flip through the rest of the pages of detail I don't need or want. I loved the beginning as Winston (our previous man whore) avoids mirrors and trys to deal with his self loathing from his burned skin. When we meet Cleo she is dealing with her grandfathers loss of memory. There is such a great plot with page after page of story. I wanted to give this a 5 like previous ones but Cleo had a blond moment towards the end. I mean come on, you just had this discussion with Winston and besides that look around you, was that the only decision you come up with? I was disappointed. Except for that poor choice, the rest delivered. Checkers anyone? Thank you to #Booksprout #empetrova #extremerules for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Xtreme Rules has a bit of a Cyrano De Bergerac or Roxanne feel to it. Bruce Winston gets roped into helping a friend out with dating advice. He even goes so far as supplying lines and compliments to his clueless friend to use when he's with the woman he's pursuing. Here's the rub...she's not 8nterested in his friend. Cleo Carver is, however, very much interested in Jake. But how can that be? He's disfigured and scarred. Cleo has a lot on her plate, working, trying to make ends meet and caring for her grandfather. Meanwhile the ops team is tasked with finding a terrorist who proves to be elusive. Unfortunately, Cleo gets caught in the middle of the investigation when she tries to do a good deed. Bruce figures out two things. One, his team is his family and they care about him. Two, Cleo loves him for who he is inside. Now it's possible that he may lose her before he can convince her to be his forever.
Bruce Winston is still recovering from his last mission. His recovery is painful in more ways than one. He is inside his head and his emotions and insecurities are getting the best of him. I love his drive and his passion and feel his pain. I love his need to protect. I love that Cleo is so focused on helping her grandpa. Her strength is amazing and her baggage is a heavy burden. I love their story, the writing is amazing. The depths of their characters is stunning I love the team and their family oriented attitudes. They live to serve and protect but they also deserve family and happiness. This is another stellar piece of the special Ops puzzle. The little twist about friends was interesting and unexpected.

Xtreme Rules is the ninth book in Em Petrova’s amazing, action packed, Xtreme Ops Series. This is a romantic suspense that is well written, and filled with well developed characters and a fantastic storyline. This book can be read as a standalone, but when read in order, a greater appreciation for the series and the characters is achieved.
Bruce Winston, finally physically recovered from his injuries on a previous op, is still dealing with the emotional issues when he meets Cleo Carver on the ski slopes. The chemistry and attraction is instantaneous and explosive, but Cleo has her own issues she is struggling to deal with. Slowly, they work together to build their connection but when Cleo stumbles across a potential terrorist, will Winston and his team find her in time? Read it and find out!

What a page turner! It was great to get Bruce's story and catch up from his injuries. There are so many brave people who protect us who are injured and the road to recovery is longer than just the physical side. Cleo is a strong woman who has come to have her own life challenges. The way these two complement each others needs as they maneuver are we or are we is heartwarming. Then there's Grandpa Max who you just want to reach into the story and hug.
There are exciting twists and turns for who dun it that will keep you guessing. Along with the rest of the team and the exciting adventures we have come to know is on the horizon. Home Terrorists, bombs and let's not forget the avalanche. Can I have a cabin and a sexy man too?
For anyone not familiar with this series I highly recommend it. It will pull you in and keep the pages turning until the end.
Romance & Trivia Nights 4 ½ stars. - Winston recovered from his accident but it changed his physical appearance which is causing him insecurities. But that’s not the only thing the accident changed, it changed Winston’s view of relationships. He now wants one but then his insecurities are stopping him from going after Cleo. But Cleo got herself in a pickle with a terrorist which is unfortunate but fortunately, aroused Winston’s protective instincts and the situation calls for close quarters. Insecure or not, something else is aroused. The question is if it is enough to keep them together and will danger catch up to Cleo. I like the story and the characters. It has a good amount of steam and romance. Like the trivia nights! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to review it.
Danger, love, an adorable Grandfather and two wonderful characters who meet and don't believe that they deserve the relationship that seems to be building between the two of them. Winston used to be a playboy who seemed to have no issues picking up women when the "need" arose. Then tragedy hits and he is severely injured in a pipeline explosion that he barely survived and leaves him with some visible as well as some emotional scars so that he doesn't think any woman would want to be with him any longer. Cleo is a sweet and beautiful woman who has chosen to devote her life to caring for her grandfather who has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease which means she doesn't feel she has time for a relationship. I just loved this story and found myself addicted from the first few pages.

Winston breaks my heart, his self worth has been shattered by the explosion leaving him with a huge mental battle to go with the physical one. Thankfully the Xtreme Ops team pulled him through the worst and meeting Cleo helps him complete his healing, especially when she sees past his scars to the man beneath. He will never be the man he was, but I prefer the man he has become now, he is more aware of others and of how judgemental people can be. Cleo is fighting a heartbreaking battle, one she cannot win but hopes to prolong. Winston not only sweeps her off her feet but he also supports her, stands by her side and comes with the Xtreme Ops family who love Grandpa Max as much as she does and don't hesitate to step in when needed. A great book which I read on Kindle Unlimited.
This is the ninth book in the Extreme Ops series. You can read it as a standalone but it is connected to the other books so if you've read them you see some of your favorite characters. Before his injuries Bruce never had a serious relationship, he was a one night stand kind of guy. Now with half his body scarred he's convinced himself that no woman would want him, he's destined to be alone. Cleo has a lot on her plate, she has a coworker that just won't listen when she says she’s not interested, she's barely scraping by, her grandpa who is the only family she has left has Alzheimer’s and now she has a terrorist after her. Bruce and Cleo's attraction is strong.Bruce wants to keep Cleo safe and Cleo wants Bruce and maybe they both can find happiness.

Cleo teaches skiing and cares of her grandpa Max who has advancing Alzheimer’s. Bruce is a Special Operator for an elite unit that is part of Homeland Security. He has been recovering from an explosion that has left him with extensive scaring that he believes makes him unattractive and unattainable. They see each other in the local bar and it’s electric and magnetic. Finding her grandfather after he disappears seems to break the ice. She inadvertently gets caught in the middle of a bomb parts transaction that puts her life in jeopardy. This seems to solidify their feelings for each other. He is tuned into her and senses when she is in danger. There are a lot of secrets to overcome before the relationship can go further.

This is a great read. It features Winston, aka Bruce, who was injured in a mission and left with scars on one side of his face and body from an explosion. He is also scarred on the inside. He thinks no woman will want a man who looks like him. Cleo is a ski instructor at the lodge in town and is also caring for her elderly grandfather who has dementia. Plus she has a coworker (Rhett) who won’t take no when he asks her out. Winston has used Rhett as an instructor to help familiarize himself with the mountain since his rehab. Rhett convinces all three of them go out for drinks and Winston helps him try to woo Cleo. But there is a big problem. Winston and Cleo click but Rhett doesn’t get the message. This book has drama, suspense, lots of action in freezing weather and lots of steam. Loved seeing these two come together and join the Extreme Ops Family
Xtreme Rules is the ninth book in Em Petrova’s Xtreme Ops Series. Extreme Rules is a highly emotional thrill ride romantic suspense filled with quite a surprise waiting for the main characters. Bruce Winston is a special op soldier who was injured in a pipeline explosion. Bruce is extremely troubled by how others especially women now view his partially burned body. Cleo a ski instructor at the nearby ski resort sees him as a good man and all-around hero. She doesn't care about how his scars look, she sees the whole man and she likes what she sees. What starts out as a romance soon turns into a deadly tale of survival. This book is a real winner and well worth your time reading it.

Bruce just got cleared from sick leave now he got back on his feet after the explosion which nearly killed him and hanged him forever, not on because the scars which are left on his body. Cleo is dealing with her own stuff. It isn't easy to take care of her grandfather who is forgetting more and more.
When Bruce and Cleo met their lives change. Because of the attraction between them and the fun while skiing together. But of course this is an xtreme ops book, so it isn't without an evil guy. This time a man who sells bombs in the area Cleo is living in.
Their are some surprises twists in this book. Not only because Cleo is to nice and helpful for her own good.
Great read with action, brotherhood, family and passion.
Bruce Winston spends much time on skis; whether for national security or for fun. He is currently recovering from injuries caused by an explosion, and very aware of the resulting scars. Cleo is a ski instructor and currently spending much of her time dealing with her grandpa Max’s progressing Alzheimers.
When these two meet, there are sparks, and Cleo sees the man beneath the scars. When danger hits the slopes it is all they can do to work together with Bruce’s team to survive.
Action packed, with plot twists and romance. An excellent read which I can definitely recommend.
***** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book *****
Bruce Winston was a player until he suffered serious scarring on an op. Ski instructor Cleo has a lot going on with a grandfather with dementia and struggling to make enough money to pay the bills. Her coworker Rhett was a pushy self-centered jerk who wouldn’t stop hitting on her and had no clue how to romance a woman. He enlists his client Bruce’s help to try to win her over. Bruce foolishly thinks if he can’t have Cleo Rhett should even though Cleo is not attracted to Rhett but to Bruce. Her grandfather goes missing and she stumbles on some bad people which brings her into Bruce secret job. There was a good amount of suspense and steam. I wanted to shake my head at Bruce and Cleo at times for being foolish.
Bruce Winston was injured and badly burnt in a pipeline explosion, and this has impacted his confidence. And then he meets Cleo, a ski instructor, and her colleague Rhett wants his help to get together with her. Cleo clearly doesn’t fancy Rhett, but does fancy Winston (and that’s reciprocated). The Xtreme Ops team comes in when Cleo comes across a domestic terrorist on the mountain – and anything else would be a spoiler. This book had twists and turns that left me reeling, annoyed with myself for misunderstanding and then ahh, okay maybe I’m not that dim! The Xtreme Ops books are a guaranteed good read, and this is easily the best so far.

This is the ninth story in the "Xtreme Ops" series about an elite group of special operatives. This one is about Bruce Winston, a recovering member of the team, and Cleo Carver, a ski instructor by day and a caregiver at night. He has been recovering from severe injuries and burns and has finally been cleared to join the group again. He is meeting the team at a local bar where he sees a beauty. Do to his scars he does not approach her. However, he continues to run into her. She is busy with being an instructor and caring for her grandfather. She somehow finds herself tied up in trouble. This is such a good story. I have been looking forward to his story especially. I love the suspense, action and chemistry. Such a good and addictive read.
Bruce Winston has spent a lot of time skiing when not working for the Ops team. Cleo Carver works as a ski instructor at the resort. Cleo's grandfather has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and she needs help with everything. One of the other instructors Rhett is constantly asking her out and she turns him down. Bruce is just recovered from his injuries on his last mission. Bruce was always a ladies' man, but now he has burn scars on his face and side and feels self-concisions about them. Bruce ends up as wing man for the guy that keeps asking Cleo out on dates. Cleo and Bruce are interested in each other. Of course, there is a fugitive in the area that the team is now looking for and Cleo ends up somewhere she should not be. Hot read
Winston still bears the scars from his last Xtreme Ops mission. He’s worked his way back on the team but he’s a changed man. When an acquaintance asks him to play wingman, he becomes a modern day Cyrano de Bergerac. Cleo has a lot on her plate between her grandfather recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and a persistent coworker who keeps hitting on her. Winston is a pleasant surprise with their shared interests and their chemistry is off the charts. When Cleo’s kind nature puts her in the cross hairs of one of the team’s targets, she sees Winston in his element. Winston struggles with his insecurities because of his injuries but Cleo makes him see himself as she and his teammates due. All the action, heat and heart you expect from an Xtreme Ops romance.
