Deadside Reapers #1

Plötzlich Reaper

Rate this book

Your dead are our business.

Got a loved one who’s passed? Want to ask your dead aunt where she hid that elusive will? Head over to Necro city and look no further than Soul Savers Inc.

One day the world was normal, and the next, it was filled with ghosts. And then the reapers came. Blood-sucking hot dudes with wings and wicked scythes.  They took control, and now we have a system.

Now we have Necro city, the hub of all things untethered.

As a soul relocation agent, it’s my job to rehouse the dead until the reapers come to collect, but with so few of those dudes about, the wait isn’t pretty. Thank goodness for decent coffee, frosted donuts, and a pending promotion.

Things are looking good until they’re not.

One bar fight and a dead reaper later, I’m left holding the scythe.

Not just any scythe, but a scythe belonging to one of Lilith’s four favored sons—the most powerful reapers in the world.

For some reason, it’s chosen me.

Now, three very large, very pissed off reapers are on my case.

It looks like that promotion is going to have to wait.

A kickass Urban fantasy with a why choose romance. Vampires, ghosts, angels, and demons. Perfect for readers who enjoy forbidden romance, enemies to lovers, or friends to lovers.

Wait, so... Wait.

Her "harem" is going to be made up of...

Are you fucking kidding me?

Can someone please give me some recommendations for PNR/UF (whether or not it is RH) that isn't completely toxic? This is my third one on a row, and I'm beyond frustrated now.

This was an ADvanced reader copy but the review below is completely my own honest opinion

Ok family this was a great read.
Serafina (fee) is our MC she loves doughnuts, margaritas and doing the right thing no matter what. This is a urban fantasy RH with reapers, multi supes , and super powers, ghosts and a cute AF snake! This story so far has twists and turns to leave you WANTING the next story like now!

There is mystery and stuff we haven’t found out yet as the reader. The world building is really well thought out, our MC fee was helping process the ghosts left behind after a scientific experiment left humans able to see ghosts. No spoilers but our MC isn’t a bad ass in action but she has a will of her own and stands up for herself when needed. Positive female friends throughout the book, fee isn’t a bitch she supports other women and apologies when needed. The guys introduced to us, I totally understand the dynamic of the other dominus reapers as they are old as sin and have had a million lives before our MC comes along.

Cohan - a bit of a flirt and super sexy and kind but is holding back something big
Mal- OVERTLY sex demon whoa flirt button is all the way up. Kinda is a douche but maybe has a heart of gold underneath the bravado
Azazel- old as sin very much me Tarzan you jane .. but I think there is more to him than meets the eye
Grayson- alpha (warewolf-ey) guy... really hoping he is part of the story later because YUM! And interesting .

This is no insta love situation, our MC ends up in their world and they are not all super pleased about it but NO bully romance here, fee is “disrupting” their world view but I think fee is just what they need even if at first it’s not what they wanted.

If you like great paranormal urban fantasy story’s with MC that you could literally picture yourself as then this book is for you. Read this now.

And for the first time ever, I did not fall in love at first sight with a Debbie Cassidy book. Not that anything is wrong with it, it's just not... amazing?

New series, new world. Out of every Debbie Cassidy's universes, this one is probably my favorite.

Most people are as human as they come but because of a failed experiment, people now can see ghosts hanging around until someone let them cross over. It probably wouldn't be that impressive if they weren't all stuck on the mortal plane due to a serious lack of Reapers.

But if I really like this world, I found it not developed enough and mostly focused on characters I did not connect with. No one particularly stood out or came across as really original; Fee was sweet, backbone and hero complex in a glazed donut, her sidekick ghost was a nice addition to the cast, Malachi was a complete fat-shaming asshole and should be dropped in a acid tank, Conah was pretty basic and Azazel.. well we don't really know yet.

Now I'm just going to wait for the second book to really make up my mind.

Trigger warning: low key a big spoiler but could most likely trigger a lot of people

Thank you Debbie for providing me this ARC.

Reaper Unexpected is the first book of a promising new series by Debbie Cassidy. The FMC, Seraphina (or Fee as she prefers), can't help but try to help when she thinks someone needs her. She lives with a ghost and her pet snake and works to help the dead get crossed over via reaper.

Just when she's up for a promotion/transfer to a new division, she goes out to a club for a girl's night with her ghostly BFF. She ends up trying to save someone which inadvertently causes her to be the next Dominus reaper.

This book has it all... sexy AF guys who command the page, action, and lots of drama. I am really looking forward to seeing where this series takes us in the future.

I REALLY REALLY HOPE THIS SERIES IS RH!

If it is then the potential RH hotties are:

Conah, Malachi, Azazel - sexy Dominus reapers

And one sexy alpha I hope we get to see more of - Grayson Loch

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It started so well... Within the first few pages I noted two funny and truthful quotes and then? It all went down to shambles.

I did not care for the story, for the body shaming, for the not caring, for all the assholes. The plot for me felt rally forced and too packed with action to actually enjoy it properly.

Well, will not continue the series but might check out other books by this author.

So...interesting story so far. I'm digging the reapers and ghosts- and Fee as a character.
But the potential love interests? Not really...

But I do think I will read on to know whats going on with Fee's powers, the Reapers, and the secret society bad guys.

4.5.

Reading a Debbie Cassidy book is like wrapping myself in a snuggly blanket. I always know that I'm going to get quality and can sit down to an enjoyable read.

Fee's life is turned upside down when she goes from an admin job, processing the deal souls in Necro City to unexpectedly becoming one of a small team of reapers. She has to deal with some big revelations about herself, adjust her expectations of what her life will be and get used to her fellow reapers... And they're not all making her welcome. Add into the mix a nefarious weapon that can kill the reapers and Fee is definitely thrown in at the deep end.

The world building, as usual, is interesting. After scientists released a toxin into the atmosphere that they thought would extend human's life, it instead made the spiritual world of ghosts visible to them. Humans can now see and interact with ghosts and humanity eventually got itself involved in the processing process for souls to cross over. You have purgatory, where the malignant souls go and Dead side, where those can go who aren't ready to move on yet and then the Beyond, where reapers take souls ready to pass on. The world building is sort of revealed piece by piece and there's still a lot to learn.

Fee (short for Seraphina) was a likeable heroine, tough and kick ass, but only to a certain extent, confident, yet not arrogant...I liked her a lot. Vora her ghostly side kick was a nice touch, too. Always nice to see positive female friendships in books.

There are four potential harem guys: Mal, a fellow reaper who I did not like at first, but who has hidden depths and one who grew on me, Conah, also a fellow reaper and who seemed lovely at first but then we find out something that puts him in my bad books, Az, her final fellow reaper who had a Bane vibe (for those who have read her Chronicles of Midnight series) and despite only appearing from 70ish% was probably my favourite. Then we have Grayson, Alpha of the local werewolf pack who might not end up with her, but I'm drifnitely intrigued.

The romance stuff feels a little more slow burn than usual, but I like it when author's actually bother to develop the relationships and don't just straight to traitorous bodies nonsense. We also have all of the guys distinct and separate from one another, as I always find with Debbie's books.

This is probably my favourite start to a series of Debbie's since Chronicles of Arcana, my very fave, so excited to read more!

Do you ever read the blurb of a book and your expectations from that are nothing like the book that you read? This is one of those for me.
I liked the idea of a woman becoming a reaper while still being a soul relocation agent. I liked how she seemed to care in a job that not a lot of people did since the souls are already dead. I liked Serafina's ghost best friend and her relationship with her pet snake. Unfortunately, becoming a reaper means that you have to leave everything behind. There's also this massive plot against the reapers to kill them and get ahold of their scythes.
Character-wise, no thank you. Serafina's meant to be this super heroic kind person that keeps risking her life to save those in need. But it gets to the point that she's kind of idiotic, going against people she has no idea how to beat while not knowing how to fight. Her love interests? Some of my least favourite in the RH genre.
Would I recommend this? No thank you.
Will I be carrying on the series? Part of me would like to carry on and see how these guys are meant to be redeemed. But nah, I'm good with leaving it here.

Started off pretty interesting and funny, got a little confusing but nothing too bad.....then Mal entered the picture. Now in every RH I've read there's always one who's an asshole to the h and Mal fit that bill immediately, he said some really hurtful things to the h but I rolled with it, him being with OW though is something I can't stand..... So before I continue does anyone know if Mal really is part of her harem????

Revelation Central

Fee gets hit with revelation after revelation in this book. At least she has Cora a d Cyril. The potential harem members all have issues. I'm not pleased with Conah. Mal is a jerk, but has potential. He clearly has an inferiority complex when it comes to Conah. Azazel is gruff as hell. Then there's Grayson, the loup garou that is briefly met, but clearly into Fee.

The world is interesting, but Fee has quite few road ahead of her.

DNF at 50% I don’t like or understand the MFC once she meets the guys. Or one of them. At first she was interesting and I liked that she is empathetic and stands up for the little guy, but her attraction to Mal who is an arrogant, fat shaming man slut, makes me lose all respect for her. I’m guessing he is one of the future harem members. I don’t see how he can redeem himself, honestly. I get that bully-enemies-to-friends thing is a popular trope, (not my thing, personally) but the guy has to be at least somewhat likeable and we need to at least have some excuse for that crappy behavior. I don’t see that happening. Even if it does end up explaining his atrocious behavior, I no longer care. That’s how deplorable he is.

There is no romance. Only lust and a FMC a bit on the TSTL side who was handed a new interesting life where she can actually help others and make a difference like she seems to want, but would rather go back to her old crappy house and mediocre life and lame job that doesn’t appreciate her for idk what reason. Because of a promotion? Okay.

Then there’s the mysterious-origin-story-orphaned-as-a-baby trope. Yet she doesn’t seem too interested in finding out what she is and exploring that. She’s “special” but she doesn’t care. She just wants to go back to her job at the spirit DMV or whatever.

She’s apparently on the BBW side, though the cover doesn’t show that. She likes her body one second, but seems super insecure about it the next and admits she eats like crap, but makes excuses as to why she can’t lose weight, it’s real confusing. Either own it or fix it. Pick one. Ugh. I just can’t.

If you’re looking for a really good RH reaper story check out Reaper’s Pack (All the Queen’s Men) by Rhea Watson instead.

What an amazing new series from the brilliant Debbie Cassidy!!!

Our heroine is no nonsense, headstrong, kick butt woman named Seraphina-though she prefers Fee. She had a hero complex and unfortunately that’s what gets her in trouble, whilst trying to help she finds herself with a knife in her gut and a new destiny as a reaper.

Each character has an individual personality and plenty of mystery to them. There are so many secrets lurking under the surface and I can not wait to see where this series goes!! The world building is epic as usual and the banter is perfect. I know I’m going to get an amazing story from this author and I was not disappointed in this one!

I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves urban fantasy, and anything paranormal. I can imagine where this is heading and I am on pin and needles!!

3.5-4 stars. Honestly I've decided to take more time thoroughly engaging myself into Debbie Cassidy's work. It seems every series starter of hers I pick up I fall head over heals right into. Now I'm not the biggest fan of some of her multiverse content not because its not good but its like I can't ever find the beginning that starts the chain of spinoffs, eventually I just gave up. I think I'm regretting not getting more involved with her worlds now. She is just an incredibly talented story teller and seems to like to write all the things I love to read.

Unfortunately, for me, I also have a habit of starting series that aren't finished yet.. Its incredibly frustrating for me, as I have absolutely no patience. It also almost sends me into depression spirals when I go to grab the next book and see it isn't out for 6 months.. Its awful lol. I do it to myself though. This is in fact once of those times where the first couple books are out but there is more to come... later of course. SMH at myself.

Fee our FMC is the best! Snarky, funny, token awesome bitch ghost BFF, and a high moral compass and a ton of compassion. Yea I want to be her. Fee takes her job seriously. The allotment of ghosts is a very serious and rewarding affair. The promotion she has been waiting for is finally within her reach when Fee has a chance encounter with some reapers and a monster.. No worries though.. until her next encounter with reapers turns her into one.. and not just a reaper but a freaking Head reaper.. one of 4. Her new reaper co-workers aren't exactly friendly nor do they want her in place of their previous brother. Fee on the other hand just wants her life back..

So far I've been sucked right in and am headed straight into book 2, like right now. I need to pace myself this series is unfinished! Of course, I'm not going to, because I not only lack patience but also discipline. 🤦‍♀️

Oh this book tickled and entranced me! The dead are no longer hidden, now they are fully visible to humans - and they are BIG business! Entire corporations have cropped up in order to deal with the influx, even though what happens after processing is still a mystery to most.

The world building is decidedly delicious, invoking a Dystopian feel while firmly clinging to the Urban Fantasy vibe. There is a ghost roommate, a snake with talents I won't spoil, and a trio of confusing - and VERY different - Reapers, two of which want almost nothing to do with the newest Reaper that has fallen into their mix. Add in the murderous cult intent on destruction, a powerful blade that can actually kill a Reaper and you have a volatile situation, one that breeds drama and stirs the cauldron of narration, lending this plot all the mystic of fast moving fantasy with the sexual tension of a forbidden romance.

Frankly, it's great, and reads a bit smoother than the last two series's produced by this talented author, though I enjoyed those as well. This one just flows a bit easier. Maybe its the character mix or a FMC that flat out knows she doesn't know anything.... whatever the reason, this is a 5 star read I can't wait to follow.

*I received this as an ARC and I am thrilled to share my honest opinion!*

Pros:
~ Fantastic world building!!! The idea of the dead walking around us, and that we can ALL see them? And making it a business? Awesome.
~ The Reapers.... all of them are so different and wonderfully depicted. I don't have a favorite, but I want to smack at least two of them.
~ Fee is beautifully flawed, and she likes it that way.
~ Ok... the snake thing will make sense, at the end.

Cons:
~ Lucas. Just... Lucas.
~ That cliffhanger!! Dang it, LOL!

Perspective
~ First Person, Single POV

Ending Type
~Cliffhanger

Rating
~ R

Romantic Dynamic
~ MMMF

Character Age Range
~ Adult

As per the usual Debbie shoots and she scores! Man, this is a hell of a book! Serafina (Fee) is awesomely kickass! She is relatable but also strong and not willing to back down! She doesn’t let these strong men walk all over her.

Debbie knows how to write these in depth amazing characters and it never fails to impress.
The guys were thirst trap worthy and may have made me drool. What can I say they’re the perfect opposites to our girl. Cohan was a favorite from the beginning but at the end I was feeling all kinds of ways for Mal and Azazel! They were so yummy and fun!
The story instantly sucks you in like a black hole and you’re lost until you finally come up for air at the end and realize you zoomed through the entire book. There’s mystery and intrigue to keep you guessing, hot as sin reapers, and story building that will knock your socks off. Also, that last paragraph though! Ugh!! Killing me Debbie!

No...no,no,no! I need more.

The last chapter of this book reminds me of going to sip your coffee and realizing it's all gone!

I feel addicted to this story, and need to know what happens next.

Between the abilities that keep surfacing, all the bombs dropped in the last quarter of the book, and the sexy alpha dangled in front of us, I feel jittery and crVing so much more.

Also Conah, you've got some explaining to do! So many half-truths and secrets in the group. Can't wait fo see how Fee kicks the legs out from under all these men!

So frustrating! Started out with so much potential and then boom! Her supposed love interest keeps calling her a fat ass that lasted near 2 pages. Big NOPE. Totally off putting and not endearing.

Maybe I'll come back to finish it someday, maybe not 🤷‍♀️

Fee and her scythe

So Debbie Cassidy really does bring us unique and amazing books
After I read the wolves of Hawthorne cove series which I have to add was the best series in the paranormal/ shifter section and that series brought me to the work of Debbie Cassidy and her incredible writing
I knew this series what gonna be good, what I didn’t expect was how good
I never read any reaper series before this and I love it. It’s different, got it’s own unique with a lot of history we know when it comes to Adam and Eve, Lilith and demons
I’m a huge supernatural fan hehe
So dead side reapers has ticked all my boxes and more
So our leading lady in this book is seraphina aka fee works with the dead/ghost so she already knows of shifters, vamps and demons
She was planning to move up her career with her promotion she just made giving her two weeks to find the chance she might be able to finally meet her dead relative and she finds herself trying to save a reaper and he isn’t just any reaper he’s part of the four sons of Lilith
Which again will explain more when you dive into this awesome series
Now don’t expect there to be romance straight away, another slow burner and if it’s anything like wolves of Hawthorne then you know the wait will be worth it.
It’s another series that has a lot going for it self and has its own charm to make it stand out to other paranormal/urban fantasy romance
And this is why Debbie Cassidy has become one of my favourite authors.

From the start of this book to the end I was fairly well engrossed. I almost finished it the same day. The main character Fee is a pretty strong character. She knows a bit about the supernatural and all but not really about herself. So obviously there is some self discovery in this book but that really just leads to more questions about her history. I absolutely loved the dynamic between her and the guys. The obvious easy chemistry with her and Conah, the hate but she finds him oh so sexy Mal, and the quiet oh so stoic Azazel. Last she meets a Grayson whom she is quite drawn to twice, I’m not sure what Debbie has in store for this hot sexy guy that Fee just had to touch, But I’m sure there is something. You can tell she has quite the story planned and I really look forward to reading the next book.

Fee helps to place souls until reapers are ready to take them to the beyond. One night, trying to save someone she almost dies saving this stranger—a Dominus, one of the four most powerful reapers. She gets her scythe and now she needs to learn how to use it. The only problem is that the other three Dominus are not as happy to have her in their midst... Fee needs to fight to find her place.

I read this book after the wonderful suggestion of a friend and I'm so thankful. I was in a book slump and this book hooked me from page 1. I'm 99% likely to binge read the whole series.

Fascinating take

Fascinating take on the myths and lores of religions. Dealing with reapers, and celestials.

The whole thing is crazy. I also think there is more going on to fee than we are aware. I expect to have a lot of revelations.

Mal I’m not a fan of his joking with Fee. Az this will be interesting with him. Conah needs to wake up still.

Excited to see where this goes. Fee is a complex character, she has some shy soft parts about her and then some violent ragey parts of her too. I wonder what it’ll mean.

With an intriguing take on the dead set in a fantabulous world built by this author and filled with demons, angels, vampires, shifters, ghosts and reapers this takes you on an amazing adventure! A great slow burn Rh romance with some awesome characters and I am very excited to see where the author takes this next!

A decent UF, although a bit of a disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty good book and I'll definitely go on with the series, but I've read books by this author before, and they were a lot better.

But all in all, it's a nice, fast-paced UF with a decent world-builder. And well, it kept me hooked, so that's always a plus in my book.

I absolutely adore this book. It's funny, sweet and perfect. Mal is ridiculous and makes me laugh. I think I'm going to like Azazel. Fee is just everything. It is a slow burn but the way Fee reacts to the guys is hot and funny. I just can't with this book. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.
