When I first heard that Phil was writing a devotional I thought, "Yes! It's going to be great because it's Phil Wickham. Everything he does is gold!" Then when I heard it was inspired by his hit song, Battle Belongs, I was even more excited being that is in my top favorite Phil 5. I never realized though that this book would change my prayer life in such big ways.
Before reading this devotional, I would describe my prayer life as good. The first thing I did every morning was pray, I would pray throughout the day when faced with anything that I had concerned with and I always ended my day with prayer. I even hosted prayer times in a couple of groups I started on facebook: Daily Blessings and The Chosen Prayer Warriors. I thought my prayer times were full, productive and "enough". I thought this until reading On Our Knees. This devotional, written by Phil, has opened my eyes to how much deeper, meaningful, purposeful, rich, powerful, intimate, honest, transparent, blessed and so much more my prayer life can be. There is so much that I was lacking. I hadn't even scratched the surface as Phil mentions at the end of the devotional.
I feel Phil gave three specific keys in this devotional about prayer: what prayer is, how to pray and how God responds to our prayers. Each day we were given a story from the bible that gave the lesson in action. I feel this opened my eyes to better understanding not only the scripture but how to apply it to my prayer life. It taught me how to be more intimate in my prayers, align them with God's desire, how I can pray with expectation that God will and can answer my prayers. Three of the areas that touched me the most were praying in the name of Jesus, pray with Scripture and with the Holy Spirit. I think we all have said, "In Jesus name I pray . . . " but I feel that this section on praying in Jesus name really opened my eyes to what it truly means when we say these words. I am now more keenly aware of what it means when I say this. I had never thought much about praying with scripture but after reading that section it opened my eyes to the beauty of doing so and how it can guide you in your prayer walk and draw you closer to God. The section on praying with the Holy Spirit helped me to see how he is our guide and mentor. We often forget he is part of the God head I think. All three of these sections and this whole book was so beautifully written.
Phil did a wonderful job of showing the reader that your prayers don't have to be perfect. Those who came before us were sinners just like us. Their prayers weren't perfect. They cried out to God in their pain. But God heard them. He heard their imperfect prayers and cries for help. He heard their whispers and their roars. He will, can and wants to hear us. This devotional can change and will change your prayer life!! It will give you peace, strengthen you, give you hope and bring you closer to God.
"Prayer is a lifelong journey. The deeper we go and the more honest we are with God, the more we realize we're only beginning to see and learn of His great love for us" - - Phil Wickham (On Our Knees)

The actual information and advice about prayer here is solid and Biblical, but it doesn't say anything in a new or exciting way. The entries are short, thankfully, but are also a bit repetitive.

The most frustrating thing about this book, though, is that it spent too much time reminding us that Wickham has a successful career, a wife, children, and overall, a happy and comfortable middle-class existence. He vaguely mentions things like, "I have problems in my life I have to pray about, too." But he seems to have lived a pretty charmed life so far.

I realize it's not quite fair to compare prayers and all that, but I fail to see how someone who has dealt with truly serious, challenging situations in life, or people who have prayed for 20+ years without answers, etc., will be encouraged by this. I found it actively discouraging, and while I tried to give Wickham the benefit of the doubt going in, by halfway through, I just wanted this to be over.

Note: Over 50 pages here are blank for "notes." If you're not someone who writes in your books, this is just a waste of paper.

I received a copy of this ebook from the author/publisher via NetGalley.

Written in first person, the reader gains a glimpse at what Jesus is teaching Phil Wickham about prayer. With exceptional insight, these devotions on prayer follow scripture from Old Testament to New Testament, Genesis to Revelation.

Days 1-40
A prayer topic is listed as the title, such as:

-Pray Expecting to See God’s Glory
-Prayer Breaks Down Walls
-Hearing God’s Gentle Whisper
-Prayer Aligns Our Desires with God’s
-Pray for God’s Purpose
-God Hears Us Even in Our Disobedience
-Pray for Those Who Cannot (Or Will Not)
-Pray Without Fear

The prayer time is divided into these sections:
—The Story-suggested passage and key verses for contemplation
—The Promise-what has been learned from the scripture, what it might teach us about prayer and how it impacts our faith
—Today’s Prayer-a model prayer that uses what was learned on that day to help the reader approach God with the concept
—Prayer Practice-an example of what was learned and how to use it, in conjunction with suggested applications, to grow in our prayer life
—Prayer Reflections-questions that promote going further in the lesson
There is also a place for notes at the end of each day

This is a devotional that could be reread and applied throughout a lifetime.

I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

New believer or been walking with the Lord your entire life, this is an exceptional devotional on prayer. Highlighting the promises of God through Bible stories and scripture, and then application suggestions for your own life. Truly, I will probably read this again in coming years as it’s so simple yet powerful.

I really enjoyed the prayer prompts and they were super helpful in giving me inspiration on what to pray and where to start.
The commentary on the scripture wasn't as theologically rich as I was hoping and in some areas, I wish there was more clarity in the commentary and that he didn't use as many Christianese terms and phrases.
Maybe I went in with unrealistic expectations, but I've always loved Phil Wickham's music and the theological richness of it so I assumed his writing would be similar, but it felt like it was lacking and there was potential for a deeper look into the scripture and how it applied to prayer. However, I did find the prayer prompts helpful since I usually have a harder time with prayer and pushing myself to actually spend time talking to God. :)

If you are looking for a book to help you consider various ways to pray, this is a wonderful book to help you. Using the Bible as the text and model of how people prayed was extremely helpful. I thought it was a great idea to go through the Bible in the order in which the books (and characters) appear was a terrific way to lay out the book.

I highly recommend this book for the practicality of this prayer guide. I believe everyone would benefit from reading it. Even after you go through the book, you could begin again and learn something new to apply to your prayer time.

Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

On Our Knees was an okay read. I listened to the audio book, which was read by the author and read very well. I felt like certain things were great, but other things I didn't really like. I liked how the author shared some personal things and made it relatable. The chapters were short, so the read was a quick one. All in all, an okay read.

Meh. Some days were really good and interesting and others I just felt like he was selling me his music. Might be good for a new believer or a younger person but not super deep or new.

I wasn't expecting this.
(Spanish bellow)

I think many people approached the book because of the song Battle belongs, because of Phil, or because of support for the publisher. In my case Battle Belongs became a hymn to combat anxiety and just at a time as critical as the pandemic.

But ON OUR KNEES is not about alternate histories or testimonials of when singing the song reminds you to pray. The book addresses prayer as a practical spiritual discipline as you walk through the biblical stories for 40 days.

Every day you will find the following structure:

1. Biblical base reading.
2. What biblical promise for us is in that portion.
3. You will find a short sentence.
4. The invitation to the prayer practice with the topic. (This part constantly challenged me to be much deeper and more intentional in my prayer request)
5. Reflections on prayers and our response in gratitude [you will need paper and pencil]. In my case I added this part to my prayer journal because I love writing my prayers)
I recommend that you do the same, this portion of your day do it physically.

And a Notes section. (I read the digital version but I can imagine how amazing it must be to have it physical)

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Oun our knees is a second language-friendly book

If English is not your first language, you can read it confidently, it doesn't have big "Palabras domingueras en ingles" in fact, is super real, and I love that you can witness the author's heart on every page.

If there is something that remains for me from this experience during these 40 days, it is that we can ask God for everything and trust in God at all times.

My prayer life was revived and I think you can experience the same by reading this book with intention.

1. La lectura de base bíblica.

Communicating Daily with God

This is a 40-Day Prayer Devotional that covers Five areas the author suggests be used in your daily prayer life, there are:
1. The Story, which includes a suggested passage of Scripture for you to read, followed by several key verses from that passage for discussion.
2. The Promise, each day has a lesson focused on the Bible verse called The Promise. It is a conversation about what we’ve learned from the Scripture as well as an invitation to join us in wrestling with what that day’s verse might have to teach us about prayer and how it applies to our faith.
3. Today’s Prayer, a prayer that can help you model the lessons we learned from Scripture about praying.
4. Prayer Practice, this practice will challenge you to grow in how you pray.
5. Prayer Reflections, these are sets of questions meant to help you explore the lesson from the Bible and hopefully go deeper in your prayer journey.

Phil Wickham has provided 40 very powerful prayers, supported by scripture covering a wide variety of topics, such as:
• Pray for the Impossible – Exodus 14:01
• Prayer as Praise and Thanksgiving – Exodus 15:01
• Pray for Physical Healing – 2 Kings 20: 1– 11 01
• Prayer Will Exceed Our Expectations – Ephesians 3 01, and many more.

The author states that we should be "Be Bold in Prayer".

I heard every creature in heaven and on earth
and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “to him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!” the four living creatures said,
“amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped
(Revelation 5:13– 14)

When Phil Wickham introduced his song, “Battle Belongs,” to audiences, he had no idea what a huge hit it would become. Or how the Lord would use his own song to teach him more about prayer.

In this 40 day devotional, Phil shares his personal through-the-Bible study of how the “great heroes of the faith” communed with God. Whether the prophets of the Old Testament, who literally walked with God and heard his voice; Jesus’ disciples, who were taught by God in the flesh; or the early church, who received the Holy Spirit; all had unique encounters with God that we can learn from to aid our own prayer lives.

Each of the 40 days includes the following format: a passage of Scripture to read, a lesson from those verses, a sample prayer and suggestions for prayer practice, and questions for either individual or group reflection.

There are 2 things I especially liked about this devotional. The first is that Phil Wickham does not approach it as a know-it-all guru who is going to teach us everything we need to know about prayer. He simply shares what he learned in his through-the-Bible study and encourages the reader to go deeper. The other great thing, which I have already referred to, is that day one starts in Genesis with Adam and Eve and the last day ends in Revelation. I much prefer going through the Bible as opposed to jumping around randomly. It works very well for this book and is rare to find in a devotional.

I recommend this book both for yourself and also to give as a gift.

I had the privilege of reading this book before its release in the midst of studying for the comprehensive exam I had to take for my PhD program. The timing could not have been better. Within just the first few days, I went from being an anxious mess to enjoying sweet, deep time with Jesus thanks to the lessons, stories, and Scripture shared in On Our Knees.

I don’t usually read devotionals (I prefer inductive study for my quiet time) but On Our Knees was the breath of fresh air I needed and a great reminder to mix up how I engage with God. My heart and soul were lifted by Phil’s personal sharing and the questions asked each day that created a space where I could stop, reflect, and commune with the Lord.

What’s so amazing about this book is that it is so versatile. Someone brand new to the faith and someone who has been walking with the Lord for years can read this book and either learn something new, be reminded of a truth they knew but forgot, or just be encouraged and refreshed. The depth this book has provided for my faith is worth far more than the monetary price I paid for the book itself. I especially recommend this book to anyone who is serving in ministry. It is easy to be so busy doing that we forget to spend time with our Heavenly Father. I will be re-reading this book again the next time I hit a low in my life or the next time I need my soul refreshed.

Side note, you will get out of this book what you put into it. Take the time to soak in the Scripture, reflect on the questions, pray, or share what you’re learning with a friend! It’s worth the time investment.

Wickham wrote this book in response to his own prayer journey over the past few years during COVID and the season in which he wrote his best selling album Hymn of Heaven. He decided to walk through the Bible and identify 40 passages that are useful prayer prompts or provided 'lessons' on prayer.

Each chapter (40 of them) starts with one of those Bible passages which provides the context for the chapter. Wickham then shares a page or so of his own experience using story as an illustration on how this passage/context manifested in his prayer life.

He then provides a short prayer to pray, an exercise to do and then a series of 4 to 5 questions to reflect on in relation to the 'theme' of the chapter.

It's a very practical resource and gets the reader reading the Bible as well which is tremendously important.

My only comment on how it could be improved is that the emphasis tended to be on a once-off daily activity rather than developing an ongoing conversational dialogue with God, one where we actually listen as much if not more than we talk. My sense is Wickham, due to his worship leader role is regularly praying throughout a day.

This is a very good practical resource especially for those of us who may be struggling to pray or are just starting out in their relationship with God. Wickham takes away the 'fear' of prayer or the 'complexity' of it and helps the reader to acknowledge it as being both essential but also nothing to be intimidated by. There are no experts in prayer, we're all beginners as it's simply about dialoguing with God.

Phil Wickham’s enthusiasm for Scripture and prayer is infectious! Each devotion read like a letter to a friend and encouraged me to pause and seek the Lord! My Full Video Review

Phil Wickham starts at Genesis and writes devotions based on 40 stories from God’s Word until he reaches the Revelation. He gives you a larger passage of Scripture to read on your own, then shares a zoomed-in passage that inspires the day’s reading.

The tone of this book is welcoming and uplifting. Phil Wickham is a highly accomplished musician, yet he humbly shares where he has fallen short and what he’s learned about prayer. This makes each day relatable and encouraging.

The Scripture based prayers are beautiful. Where this devotional shines above all others is through the “Prayer Practice” and “Prayer Reflections”. Phil Wickham gives readers simple, yet powerful challenges to take the next step in what they’ve learned. This often includes journalling prompts and reaching out to church family. The questions for reflection are thought provoking and inspire action.

This would be a wonderful book to read with a mentor. The daily meditations and questions would bring up life changing conversation!

The Spirit moved mightily as I read this book. As I was reading a day’s reading, a friend came to mind immediately. I connected with her and read the devotion to her; she wept and told me how much it had transformed her. God is so good!

Highly recommend this book!

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
READ IT. READ IT. READ IT.
I've always been a Phil Wickham lover - his music (the music, lyrics, and his voice), his ministry, his outlook when it comes to contemporary Christian music. So when I found out he was writing a devotional book, I pre-ordered it. I ended up getting multiple copies, and God made it abundantly clear that I needed to read this book and really meditate on my prayer life. I read this devo over the course of about 40 days and I had a great accountability partner to read and talk about the book with, which made it even richer. Phil goes throughout the Old and New Testament in chronological order, and discusses specific verses about prayer. I love that this book is simply focused on the Word of God and what He says about prayer. When a devotional is Christocentric/Bible-centric you know it's going to be good and really be right on. But its simple format doesn't take away from its depth. Phil provides thought-provoking questions, lovely daily prayers, human anecdotes and insight into his life as a worship leader, as well as helpful prayer practices and studies. This book helped deepen my prayer life and just made me more cognizant of my prayers as well. I have already recommended this book to many, and I'll continue. There may be certain topics that are tough to talk about or there are some differences in thoughts between beliefs, but I think the book spurns conversation and gets at the heart of what God says about prayer, so I'm a fan. We stan with Phil!

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. From one of our favorite worship leaders comes a dynamite and influential book about prayer., Such a quality, fresh and unique way to approach a subject that has thousands of resources out there available. This one resonated with me because it systematically went through the Bible to find 40 stories or references to prayer and draw an application with a theme for each one. Every chapter has the story and Bible reference, the promise and explanation of the Bible verse(s), a personal prayer, how to maybe practice this type of prayer and reflections to lean into as you apply the message that can be drawn out of the Bible. Plus, the hardcover book gives you a chance to take your own notes after each chapter. What a tremendous resource that I think would make a great gift for family member and friends alike. What a powerful tool needed for all of us as we navigate living in whatever circumstance we find ourselves in today.

I would highly recommend On Our Knees. I have always loved Phil Whickham’s music so when I saw he was writing a devotional I had to read it! This book is so powerful and I would recommend it to anyone no matter where they feel they are at in their prayer life. Phil offers many different perspectives on prayer. There were so many times were I just felt peace wash over me when reminded about how much God loves me. He wants me to come to Him boldly in prayer. I can share my heart openly with Him because he already knows what I’m going through.
I also loved each and everyone of the stories that Phil used to talk about prayer. I’ve grown up in church all of my life and never really heard many of those stories be related to prayer.
On Our Knees is a book that I will be sharing with many people. I believe that this is a must read for Christians.

On Our Knees
Phil Wickham
5 stars
Absolutely wonderful devotional. Phil Wickham takes 40 different stories from Genesis to Revelation and makes each one into a devotional. The set-up is excellent, as are the prayers and insights of each devotion. Each devotion includes Jesus’s teachings on prayer.
Prayer as the foundation for faith.
Finding intimacy with God.
Following God’s path for our lives.
Praying with boldness and courage, while also in humility and honesty.
Letting go of anxiety and fear.

This is most assuredly a book I will re-read on a regular basis. On Our Knees would be perfect for a small group, a Bible study or to read alone.
I highly recommend this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley.

I enjoyed parts of this book and felt some of the prompts got me thinking positively about prayer. I found that most of it made me contemplate topics surrounding prayer in the Old and New Testament which is a good thing but also caused some unhealthy tension in me. The main reason I didn’t particularly enjoy this devotional was because it caused me to fall into a wrong habit of believing that I will receive whatever I ask for as if God grants everything the way we want it. Although I don’t think this was the intention, the passages ended up pointing me in the direction of asking for stuff more than building a relationship. All that to say, Phil Wickham is a great writer stylistically and grammatically.

Phil Wickham has hit all the right notes with his first devotional. Real, relevant and relational. As a busy teacher, it was the perfect length for a daily devotional that ended daily with thoughtful questions and challenges. The selected scriptures used reminds us of how important and essential prayer it our spiritual life. Weaving in personal stories to teachings, we are led down a path that takes the often oversimplified task of prayer to the depth it truly needs to be. Whether you read it in 40 days as a personal devotion, with friends as a Bible study or at your own pace- this book will surely remind you that on our knees is where we really all need to be.

This book really helped me to pray in a different kind of way, standing on scripture and being bold with God.

I didn’t read this book consecutively over 40 days, but every time I picked it up God’s message was relevant to my situation. As I was reading day 39 today, I was fighting a wave of anxiety. I turned the page ready with my bookmark to day 40, only to see Philippians 4:6-7. God is so good. Of course, I went where God led and read day 40 too. The perfect end to a beautiful journey through the bible.

I’m so grateful this book was made, it’s really helped strengthen my relationship with God.

This book is absolutely amazing! Phil has always been my favorite artist, so when I heard he had finally wrote a book, I had to be one of the first or order! I’ve been blessed to be apart of his launch team to take the time and read this before launch day and to be honest, I’ll keep reading this! It has really helped me to develop a more intimate prayer life and to see things from a different perspective. I’m so thankful for this book and truly cannot recommend it enough! This is the first Christian book ive ever read, mainly
because I just haven't gotten around to it. I rated it 4 stars because I wasn't entirely moved by it, but I did see it as a good guide for anyone who needs it. I don't think anything could ever replace the Bible, but sometimes it can be hard to find methods to praying, etc. So I think this book by @philwickham is a fair resource for encouragement and
information when finding your own method of praying.

Loved this devotional! 40 days and 40 Bible studies on the power of prayer. You will spend about 15 minutes each day on the text and Phil Wickham’s thoughts on it. Each day has a written prayer and some thought provoking questions. Plenty of room to jot down your thoughts, ideas, and prayer requests. From Genesis to Revelation. I will be recommending this devotional to all my friends and family!

Phil is undoubtedly one of my favourite Christian artists. I appreciate his open heart in sharing what God has taught him about living in prayer. The book was created and based off of his song “battle belongs”. I’ve found this book to be both biblically sound and inspiring. The entries are short but the prayer prompts are worth the read alone if you’re struggling with spending time growing deeper with God.

I enjoyed using this for my Lenten devotional this year. I've seen many reviews critiquing the lack of depth, but I didn't find this to be the case. I think the beautiful and profound can be found in the simple, and that mastering the fundamentals is what leads to mastery of anything. If nothing else, I found it enjoyable to engage in different kinds of prayer, and I think this will kickstart my use of devotionals.
