The Script Club #6

Love and History

Rate this book
The sporty roommate, the professor, and a history lesson…

Holden-

Ezra might be the most annoying roommate ever. He’s loud, obnoxious, and full of himself. So what if he’s a tall, muscular, tattooed jock? His tendency to strip to his boxers in the kitchen while helping himself to my food isn’t endearing in the slightest. Nope. Ezra has to go.

However, I have to admit, he’s the perfect fit to play the king for my historic reenactment event. Ezra in a royal robe…oh, this could be quite tantalizing indeed.

He won’t do it, though.

Unless I trick him into a history lesson.

Ezra-

Holden is the kind of dude who wears top hats and great coats while teaching astrophysics to brainiacs. Weird, right? But I gotta respect that level of commitment. And I respect him.

Sadly, Holden doesn’t feel the same way about me.

I guess I can’t blame him. Cranking his gears has been a highlight of my stint in geek land. I’ve never seen anyone get riled about yogurt like him. He makes me laugh. And think. And he makes me want things I’d never thought possible.

So yeah, I’ll take that history lesson. If it leads to something more, I’m in.

Love and History is a Bi-awakening geek/jock romance featuring a messy law student, a picky professor, and a lesson neither will forget!

This series is so my cuppa: nerds, jocks, opposites attract, low angst, dual POV, satisfying HEAs all around, plus Lane Hayes' trademark wit and sharp prose.

I adored this final installment of the series. Even though it's bittersweet to say goodbye to these men and their cozy house in Pasadena, what better couple to end with than Holden and Ezra.

Holden is a passionate physics professor with a penchant for Shakespeare and historical reenactment.

Ezra is a louder-than-life lacrosse player interning at a law firm and studying to pass the bar. He's also Holden's royal pain in the ass.

Of course the animosity and pointed banter hide a mutual attraction that burns oh so bright.

Once the MCs begin spending time together, Holden discovers that Ezra's big, happy heart carries unexpressed anger at his late father, and Ezra realizes that he doesn't want to live without Holden in his life.
I want a new start, Shakespeare. With you. I'll be your king, your peasant, your joker, your fool. I'll pluck stars from the sky for you ... Let me make you happy.

A fabulous conclusion to this geeks & jock series

I've loved each one of the books in Lane's Script Club but this one's definitely a favourite.

It had everything I enjoy about a romance where two utterly different people fall in love.

Ezra wasn't at all what I'd been expecting, he had so many layers and hidden depths that the jock persona was more a way for him to follow along without pushing any boundaries.

Holden's been fascinating since the off, with his combination of science geek and history nerd wrapped together into an awesome package.

I loved how their snark and poking was really just basic foreplay and an unknown expression of interest as they essentially "pulled each other's pigtails".

As they get to know each other though, it becomes very clear they have the potential for more.

With a deft hand, hilarious at times, incredibly hot at others, and with a beautifully squishy centre, Lane takes both men on a discovery of love.

Along the way they open up and deal with baggage they've both tried to leave in the past and they mostly communicate wonderfully.

The Third Act/80% tension moment comes from an external source which causes a brief misdirection but thankfully neither man is willing to throw away their potential happiness.

With guest appearances from all the rest of the gang and a very satisfying Epilogue, this series draws to a close with a big smile.

I just want to hug this book!

Do I always tell you when I finish a new Lane Hayes book that she has easily added herself to my favorites list? Probably. Sorry for being repetitive but it is true.

I just love her writing, love her stories and always fall in love with her boys.

So, no surprise I fell head over heels for Holden and Ezra.

This was a super sweet and fun, with a touch of really touching real, conclusion to what has become one of my favorite of her series. Holden and Ezra just worked even though everything said they would not.

Talk about pulling pigtails!

I’m sad to see that the series has concluded but very excited for the tease at the end!

Easy, breezy, beautiful.

Thank you to GRR for the audiobook arc ❤️

This was a sweet, low angst romance between a college professor nerd and a student lawyer jock. A lot of the nerd x jock romances I’ve seen lately are about younger characters so it was fun to see it in an adult book.

Ezra and Holden live together in a shared house with a few other people, but they don’t get along super well. They bicker over small things and rile each other up and honestly it was really fun reading those parts. None of their bickering was serious and I just laughed at how silly they’d be at times. They both found the other attractive so it was like watching two people trying to get their crush’s attentions in the silliest way.

They start getting closer after a bet is made to see if Ezra can truly be the best housemate. Holden wants Ezra to play King Henry at the “Renaissance in the Park” event he goes to, and Ezra will get to ask Holden to do whatever he wants for him. You can guess where things go after that.

Overall it was a cute and easy read. I would’ve liked more time with them as couple, and maybe some more bickering 🤣 also this is part of a series and even thought I haven’t read any of the others books in it, I didn’t feel like I was missing out. We were told about previous couples who were featured and filled in on any details.

The arc I got was for the audiobook and I enjoyed listening to Alexander Cendese as Ezra, he does a good jock voice. I would’ve liked someone else as Holden but Cendese didn’t do a bad job with him either.

I loved Love and History by Lane Hayes and will say it's my favorite of the series.

•Roomates
•(epitome of) Opposites attract
•Banter
•Chemistry
•Super sweet
•Sprinke of angst
•HOT
•Dual POVs
•Lovely epilogue

Something that I appreciated about this installment is that while still carrying the light undertone of the series, it felt a tad heavier than the others (due to Ezra's unresolved feelings w/ a family member).

While I loved Holden, Ezra captured my heart. He was so romantic! ♡

4.5 Stars

P.S. Am I the only one who wouldn't mind seeing a book for Milton? He needs his HEA. :)

This was a really cute and sweet end to this lighthearted series. If you liked the previous books, then you'll probably like this one too since it ran with the same jock/nerd, opposites attract formula as the others. In The Professor's Date, it was obvious that there was some tension between Holden and his new roommate, Ezra. Holden liked order and Ezra had a tendency to disrupt it, so bumping heads was inevitable. The banter between them in this book was really fun, especially since Holden fought with terms like "poppycock" and "saucy lackey". I liked the way their relationship changed and grew as they allowed themselves to drop their defenses and get to know each other. This author is sort of infamous for her bleak moments so I knew something would go wrong, but it wasn't in the way I expected and I was thankful for that. Both Holden and Ezra were really nice, good people and I didn't like the idea of them hurting each other for the sake of drama. I appreciated the way things worked out for them.

I loved seeing all of the characters from the other books and felt really nostalgic at the end. This author is good at wrapping up a series in a way that makes you feel like you're visiting old friends and reminiscing about the past. And the subtle nod to the Better Than series made me so happy! I'll miss these guys and enjoyed being there for all of their HEA's.

Overall, this was enjoyable.

It didn't wow me like the last one did. I liked Holden and Ezra together, but I didn't love them.

They were enjoyable, but I wasn't super into them at the same time.

This was good and enjoyable and still a solid read overall, but I wasn't riveted.

Holden and Ezra start out as a bantering duo. There's some negative feelings, but not many. Enough for there to be a push and pull, but they don't truly hate each other and it doesn't take much for them to bend and let go of some of their past behavior towards each other.

When Holden asks Ezra to help him out with this Renaissance Fair he's a part of, as one of the volunteer actors quit as Henry the VIII, it's first part of a bet between the two that Ezra can't last a week as the perfect roommate, and if he loses, he has to do the Henry the VIII thing.

Ezra wins, but he agrees to do it anyway, and this starts a thing between them.

I do think the "drama" wasn't handled all that well. It was barely there and things were resolved very quickly, so it felt like it wasn't needed and in the end it just felt silly to me when Holden got upset over virtually nothing and it was resolved really easily. It just didn't seem necessary.

I think if there was to be drama, it could have been done better. Have Ezra lean all into trying to further his career at first and not think deeply about using Holden to do that and then have that come out with Holden and then Ezra has to make it up to him.

Instead Ezra barely had anything to do with his boss trying to use Holden to help his daughter pass his class, and the only thing he did wrong was not tell Holden the full truth, although he did tell him part of it before it all came out.

So it just felt kinda like some half-assed drama that was shoved in there near the end and it wasn't needed. It was just silly.

But otherwise, this was fun and I do recommend it. I think this is the last book of this series, which I'm sad to see! I've enjoyed these Nerd/Jock romances a lot. But I cant wait for a new series by this author, whatever that series may be.

So still two thumbs up from me. A solid way to end the series 😁🥰

When opposites attract

Instant chemistry for these bickering roommates. The scene with the food and the cooler had me laughing so hard there were tears!

Holden wanted Ezra to be a better roommate but he got way more than he bargained for. This book was filled with so much heart. I loved these two characters so much. They truly cared for one another. Lane does the bi-awaking story so well too! Loved it!

I’m sad this series is over but there are always crossovers right?!??!😉😉

"I'd told myself that a brief fling with Ezra was foolproof. I couldn't possibly hurt him. He was in this for sex and experience only.

It hadn't occurred to me that I might be the one to fall."

After the previous book in the series which gave us ample opportunity to witness the tension between Ezra and Holden, I was so ready for their story. The fun part of the whole thing is that neither man was what I expected. Ezra feels things deeply, so deeply he tends to bury his emotions in order to continue along as the happy go lucky, sometimes nudist roommate to Holden. From the start it seems these two knew just how to get under each others skin. It doesn't take long for all that tension to finally build into an epic first kiss...and there's more where that came from folks.

I loved that Ezra was so calm about exploring his sexuality. There was no freak out moment. In fact, Holden who is openly gay seemed to have the most trouble with it all. He can't imagine Ezra wanting anything serious with him and I felt that made him more closed off when it came to their relationship. It took Ezra finally stepping up and being honest about how he was feeling for Holden to actually realize what was right in front of him all along, the perfect partner for him to call his own.

The first thing Ezra does when gets home is to strip out of his clothes to his boxers.
Holden has to agree his roommate has a stunning body, but still, it’s not done and quite distracting.

Ezra and Holden are opposites, the jock and the nerd.
Ezra was a sportsman, playing lacrosse and baseball, now he’s a law student.
Holden is a geek a Caltech scientist, a professor, who also works at the Renaissance fair, raising money for a good course.

While they don’t like each other, Ezra is still curious about everything that represents Holden.
Holden needs a Henry the Eighth, the current Henry the Eighth from the Renaissance fair quit his role. The only one who fits this role, maybe more who fits the costume is Ezra.
After Ezra agrees to play the role because Holden was quite desperate and he asked so sweetly, Holden kissed him and that was earthshakingly good. The next one was mind-blowing and the next… they couldn’t stop.
Where Ezra would love to dive into… something, anything, with Holden, Holden thinks it too complicated.

Ezra isn’t an emotionless guy, he got feelings, feelings for Holden, and he wants Holden to notice him too.
He knows what he wants and is clear about it. Holden is a goner. He never stood a chance.

“I was packing a python with a mind of its own behind the thin cotton barrier.”

Watch them, pushing, pulling, dang they were everything together!

“How dare he correctly assume that I was attracted to him?”

There was so much fun, the banter was awesome. While there is a lot of playfulness there’s also time for some heavier matters. They talk and listen, they are dedicated and committed. Thank goodness they can handle some ups and downs on their road to happiness.
The point of view we got from both guys was exquisite, they talk to us readers, and make jokes as if we were with them, well we were and it was so immensely wonderful to experience.
Both guys are adorable and equally likable, you can only cheer for them and love them, there’s so much chemistry!
I loved this awesomely written, well-developed, hugely entertaining read immensely.

4 Henry VIII and Shakespeare stars

This book was such a good conclusion to a very entertaining series. I fell in love with the Script Club series at Book 2 and never looked back.

I love a good banter, and Holden and Ezra were quite skillful in this department. It was fun to see them getting on each other's nerves. Great preliminaries, I might say^^ They also connected on an emotional level in beautiful way. They showed vulnerability, confiding their past struggles. As the story unfolded we could them mature and understand their feelings.

So it was sweet... and super spicy! Ezra was very comfortable discovering his sexuality with Holden. He had a crush on him for quite some time, so it was cute to see him "get his man". They really made a great pair🥰 Seeing Ez in costume must have been a sight!

I liked the frequent cameos from other characters of the series, which happened pretty often. Having read all the previous installments, it made me a bit nostalgic. A good way to bid them farewell.

The Jock: Ezra
The Nerd: Holden

These two are roommates. Ezra is bi and there is something about Holden that attracts him. Ezra loves getting under Holden's skin doing everything he can to push his buttons. All the little annoyance are done to try and distract himself from the attraction. But there is something about Holden he just can't resist. When Holden finds himself in a jam surprisingly Ezra comes to his rescue and the two start pushing all the right buttons. When these two hit the sheets things are fire 😆

Overall a decent read. Enjoyed the relationship build. Would have liked but I'll take what was given 😁

This was nice.

I expected a bigger finish to the series, maybe a more dramatic one? I don't know.

This was your standard bi-awakening story, laced with a little more quirkiness and british english, but in my opinion, it needed a bigger wow factor.

I was really rooting for these two, I expected fireworks. Ezra was hot, funny and a catch and Holden was just... Holden. But I wanted a little more.

Yeah, I'm a little bummed.

Other than that, the series is finished and I'm hoping the author will continue with another one and continuing with the characters mentioned here, like she said, maybe with a specific law firm in mind.

I adore a Lane Hayes story, she delivers great swoon-worthy, witty, sizzling, page-turning must-read romances. Cute banter, personal development, vulnerability, and some teary moments made this one a page turner. Holden and Ezra's story had me hooked from the beginning. I adored Ezra, loved how this larger than life, tactless scallywag, settled himself nicely in the middle of Holden and his friend's lives, and totally rocked Holden's world. Well done to Ms Hayes for truly getting inside Ezra's head, how Holden thought he was going to be able to keep away from the loveable scoundrel was beyond me.

I love stories where the central relationship, starts out with the MCs being antagonists, then builds up with increasing romantic tension towards their inevitable 'get together.' Ezra's romancing of Holden through his love of Shakespeare was a great idea, it led to some wonderful one liners. As a Brit, this was definitely one of my favourites:

“Pip, pip, cheerio, you bloody bell end,” he singsonged."

The relationship that eventually developed was quite sweet too, with both guys bringing out the best side of the other. It's a pet hate of mine in romance stories where the relationship seems to be destructive to either or both of the characters involved, but there was none of that here. Ezra and Holden were so sweet together, all the while being utterly hilarious, and while the story dealt with some family issues, it stayed away from any thing really angsty. A perfect ending to the series, I also adored once again meeting Asher, Blake, Tommy, Noah et al. The perfect icing on a wonderfully tasty cake.

[3.4~3.5] rounding up because i'm a sucker for cameo crumbs and i'm Alexander Cendese biased (to think my audiobook obsession pretty much began with his aftg narration 😆).

admittedly, i don't think this story captured my attention as much as my favorites in the series in large part due to how the drama with Ezra's boss and said boss's daughter was handled. i can't say it was built up enough to warrant Holden's gargantuan reaction at the end, coating the whole scene in a contrived haze.

AND YET!

the opposites-attract roommate situation made for a fun, casual listen, and i was able to top my fluff gauge for the week, so i'm counting it as a win! i think anyone who's enjoyed this series so far won't regret giving it a go.

i'm looking forward to checking out future books by this author and catching up on her backlist, but the timing of having to bid yet another book universe adieu.... i'm off to reserve tickets to the movies tonight - escapism at its finest 🤧

Thank you to GRR and the publisher for providing an advanced copy of the book. This is my honest review :)

Ugh. I love this author and I wanted to love this story, but Ezra and Holden’s story didn’t grab me as the author’s characters normally do. For me, I just wasn’t excited by them and frankly, I found them a bit boring and blah.

Although I didn’t connect with these characters, the writing was, as always, exceptional and I loved catching up with a few of the other Script Club members.

While this story wasn’t for me, please give it a try. Unfortunately, not every couple will work for everyone, but it's still a recommendable read.

Love and History is the sixth book in The Script Club series. I’ve been impatiently waiting and hoping for Ezra! They’ve had so much s3xual tension that I’ve been waiting for it to snap. Ezra is a jock but he’s also kind of multilayered and deep, he feels. That was a nice surprise reading that. Holden is one of the resident brainiacs and so much fun to read! Once again, the author takes down another fantastic journey where two unlikely men find love. Overall, an excellent read that wouldn’t let me go. Well written, highly recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, sexy, opposites-attact, friends-to-lovers bisexual awakening romance. Lane always has great dialogue, as well as excellent pacing.

Love and History is the 6th and final book of the Script Club series.

Every time I read a Lane Hayes book, I've got a big smile on my face and this one is no exception. I devoured Holden and Ezra's story and I'm very sad that this series has come to an end.

Holden and Ezra are roommates, and they are complete opposites, but somehow, they just work. I loved how both MCs were always honest with each other about not only their feelings, but also with what was happening in their lives. I liked how each just went with what felt right for themselves and it was just so much fun to see their love story evolve.

As she usually does, Lane succeeded in bringing her characters to life in a way you can't but get attached to them. Ezra, the tall and tattooed jock/lawyer to be who likes to cook in his underwear, and Holden, the physics teacher who likes to wear clothes from different eras and entertains a love for everything "historical". The two of them just complete each other perfectly.

One thing I'd like to highlight is how this series presents a Jock VS Nerds trope but what's fun about it, is that the MCs are older, making them more mature. It gives a different perspective, compared to stories set in HS or college, for example. I really appreciated that throughout the whole series.

I'm now very excited about what's next with Lane Hayes!

I really enjoyed the beginning of this and the UST/bickering from a Holden and Ezra, I just wish we had gotten a little more. I did like how they seemed to be opposites and yet fit each other so well. There was just something holding me back from loving them together. It was good, but not my favorite of the series. I also felt that the ending was a bit rushed and could have been smoothed out a bit more.

I was also a bit disappointed in the lack of scenes with all the guys. This being the last book in a good series, I was hoping for more cameos. They were mentioned, but I wish we could have gotten maybe one more Script Club meeting together and the epilogue was more interactive with everyone rather than just telling us.

Overall, this was a super enjoyable series and it will definitely be revisited when I need something fun and light with a surprising level of ache.

Holden and Ezra 🔥❤️🔥
4.5 Stars ⭐️

I can not begin to tell you how much I adored this series and just how much each book gets better and better!

I have been waiting for Holden's story since the beginning and omg, Lane Hayes couldn't have written a better love for Holden than Ezra ❤️ where Holden was prickly, Ezra was soft, when Holden was serious, Ezra had jokes....they were opposites in every sense of the word, they shouldn't have worked but they fit together like a perfect puzzle ❤️ The relationship development in this book was perfection, the comedy was great and the steamy scenes were hot!!! For fans of this series this is an absolute must read and for anyone else..pick up this book and this series, it will not disappoint.

Love & History was a great last book of the series. Holden has always been intriguing since we met him in earlier books and watching him find his own HEA was terrific. Ezra was such an irreverent and fun character and a wonderful opposite to Holden’s seriousness, and together they brought out the best in each other and made a wonderful couple. Their story was fun, snarky and steamy, and the epilogue was perfect.
I received a copy of this book from GRR to review, and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.
