A little girl explores the many ways and occasions of hiding—inside and outside, with friends and with pets and toys, for fun and for security—in this captivating and comforting picture book. Hiding gets right to the heart of what makes children so love to hide!
“I am very good at hiding. I hide when it’s too noisy. I hide when it’s too quiet. Some days I just want to hide by myself.”
As she explores the world, a little girl finds that she can hide wherever she looks. From leaf piles to laundry baskets, these places make her feel safe and secure in a busy world. But the best part about hiding? It’s being found! With fresh and colorful artwork, Kate Pugsley captures the many ways children feel about hiding with sensitivity, humor, and most of all, love.
My beginning reader loved this book because it was easy for him to read in one sitting. Add that to the fun illustrations where you find the hiding girl on each page ... * Chef's kiss * Another reviewer said that the subtitle promised more than the book delivered, and I have to agree with that. But it didn't change my kids' enjoyment of the book.
Hiding by Kate Pugsley is a sweet and adorable picture book that explores the ways & reasons children sometimes hide, all with an innocent simplicity that is so very endearing.
The little girl hides when it’s too loud, when it’s too quiet, or when she doesn’t want to meet someone new. To be honest, I’m pretty sure I’ve wanted to hide as an adult for all those reasons too lol. She hides with her friends, and she hides by herself. In the laundry basket. Behind a plant. In a pile of leaves. Behind a book. In a costume. Up a tree. She is very good at hiding. The illustrations (also done by the author) are beautifully toned, contributing to overall sweetness of the book, and they work well with the text to provide an extra layer of fun as children try to spot the little girl hiding.
Bottom Line: Tender. Sweet. Cute. Gentle. Endearing. Fun. Each of those words is a perfect descriptor for Hiding by Kate Pugsley. Early readers will find the text accessible, as the words are simple and few per page, and children of all ages will love the precious illustrations. Adults will, too! It would make a delightful read for classrooms as well as family readalouds and bedtime.

For those children who find it hard to face the noisy busy world sometimes this story soothes and shares the emotions they share. This is really a concept book about the idea of hiding, not always with a secret or to escape. Sometimes hiding just for fun. The soft pastel illustrations perfectly match the concept of a quiet escape.
An adorable book! It talks about the importance of needing to take a break and hide from the world when it gets overwhelming. It teaches an important lesson about taking a break and prioritizing our mental health, but it's also fun trying to find the main character hidden in the patterns throughout the book.
