Lies & Secrets Duet #1

Charming Cruel Boys

Rate this book
My goal for senior year of high school was easy. Ace all of my classes, keep my head down, and skip town the second I got a chance. I wanted to escape to some college across the country. Away from my hateful father and far away from the boy who broke my heart.

When my dad drags me to dinner one night and announces his surprise engagement, all of those hopes go up in flames.

Looks like my ex-boyfriend and his twin are about to become my stepbrothers.

Suddenly, my life is filled with disarming smiles, cutting words, and a whole lot of tension.

But there's a secret that threatens to undo us all. A secret that someone killed to keep quiet.

I don't think I'll survive until graduation.

*This is a high school bully, stepbrother romance with mature themes that may be difficult for some readers. One brother is sweet and the other is vicious, but the FMC Remi gets caught up with both in this why-choose, MFM relationship. Hi, I'm Ebony!

I'm a dark romance author who writes steamy, dirty, morally gray men.

I'm inspired every day by authors in my genre and I probably consume an unhealthy amount of books on a regular basis but... Who's going to judge?

When I'm not writing or reading, I'm usually curled up on the couch with my husband and dogs, watching a movie.

An intriguing read from start to finish

This is a pretty interesting and great high school, step-brothers romantic suspense novel. It honestly had my attention right from the beginning. Even if it had some predictable scenes I was invested. This is MFM (taboo since the MMCs are identical twins sharing the same girl) and does end on a cliffhanger, but you're warned in advance.

Things I liked:

- The writing. I'm super picky on writing, but I wasn't disappointed. Really enjoyed it actually.
- The dialogue. It didn't feel cringey, it felt like stuff 16/17 year-olds would say.
- The FMC, Remi, because she felt like an authentic 17 year-old girl, who is insecure and still finding ways to speak her mind and be who she wants to be. She's hopeful, kind, doesn't go out of her way to be mean, open to second chances.
-Duke recognizing and doing his best to right his wrongs. He looked back on his actions (and inactions) and decided to change, to apologize, because he realized/admitted that he made mistakes.
- The honest portrayal of Remi and her father, Charles', relationship. She was a victim, yet not knowing any different, thought her dad was only being harsh with her, not that he was an abuser. It's tough to read, but I thought this was a really good development. I liked how the author didn't shy around this subject or victim blame or rationalize belting your child as "parenting." This read like an authentic, tragically abusive relationship. If you think hitting your child is fine, kindly fuck off leave my page and reflect on yourself.

Some things I didn't like:

- There was a miscommunication trope; HOWEVER, it wasn't too bad since it was resolved within the first third of the book (I think at 30%).
- The mystery element felt a tad unbelievable (we are still in the process of learning what all it entails, it will be explained in the next book).
- The 2 (TWO) side female characters besides Remi left a lot to be desired. I did not like how they were portrayed. Remi had no woman role model or supportive friend and I felt like it was lacking because of this. 😭 I wanted some women-supporting-women moments.
- There was a lot of back-and-forth, hot-and-cold moments with Knight that were getting tedious. I had to keep reminding myself he's 17 and in high school and he isn't mature, but he was a total asshole. I'm hoping there will be a lot more groveling and a redemption in the next book.

I did enjoy this, much more than most high school bully type books. I'm really looking forward to the next book!

“Step brothers”
High school Age
Bully Romance
MFM
Twins

Well hott damn I was not expecting this! Loved this a lot read it all in a day!! Perfect amount of spice for high school age, plot twist, MAJOR cliffhanger!! I can not wait until the next book comes out!!

Knight and Duke are complete opposites but Remi is still attracted to them both even if they treat her differently. knight is the bad boy “ bully” and I love to see him battle his demons to make things right for remi I hope he gets the chance to redeem himself in book 2. Duke is a sweetheart and treats her right but something happens to him and now he is battling new demons now too. Can Remi and her boys get their HEA ??

First, check TW before reading.

Solid 3.5 ⭐️

The dedication page made me laugh out loud! The introduction to the characters in the book were smooth and I love the Multi-POV throughout the chapters.

A story of a girl named Remi and twin brothers Duke and Knight, polar opposite brothers. The story starts with Duke & Remi secretly dating.. a tragedy strikes and Remi is no longer with Duke. Duke is the sweet, kind & sensitive brother while Knight is the "bad boy" and is a complete asshole to Remi.. (but secretly in love with her-- with a disturbed way of showing it).

The twins end up moving in with Remi due to Remi's father announcing an engagement to the twins mother. 😱

There is a secret lurking & whoever is involved is going to great lengths to keep it buried. This book has lots of suspense, the kind where you just want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen. The book ended on a massive cliffhanger so have book 2 handy!

Sexuelt minte meg denne boken om credence i sofa-scenen, if you know you know 😉

Obsessed! This was one heck of a start to this duology. Check your trigger warnings. The plot, twists and turns, accuracy of the aftermath and the characters reactions to major events (as specific as I can get without spoilers but once you read you will know what I mean), bullying, and steam/spice were so incredibly on point. I am not normally one for miscommunication in books but the author made it work beautifully. The character and relationship development through this book were fantastic. This author is on my must read list now. They crushed it!!

RH MM/Bully-Enemies to Lovers/Abuse

SYNOPSIS (of Duet): The FC, Remi, has a romantic summer with a boy and gives up her virginity to him only to be ghosted straight after. A year passes and her abusive father gets engaged to her Ex‘s mother and he and his twin, who hates her, move in with her and her father. There is a mystery running in the background and you get snippets dropped through Book 1 with the „big reveal“ towards the end of Book 1. Book 1 covers how the FC gets back with her ex and also falls for his twin as well as revealing the nightmare through which she has lived. Book 2 sees the nightmare that has envelopped the FC and MCs lives play out and ultimately a HEA.

Heat level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/🍆🍆 - The sex scenes are relatively hot and not badly written and there‘s a few of them but not too many. However this author does suffer from what some other authors do which is inappropriate sex scenes - just been whipped so you cannot stand? Let‘s engage in some sex. Just been almost raped & murdered and badly injured? Let‘s have a big sex scene 🤔 That‘s not hot it‘s laughable.

The story is unoriginal and there are a few editing and typo issues which are annoying. That would not have been a big deal if the writing had been engaging or the characters strong and likeable. Remi was yet another girl who the 2 MCs find beautiful, kind, caring etc. despite there being no evidence of this other than the author telling us this is the case. In the story she simply comes across as weak and stupid. She does not try to fight back against her father or stand up for herself. There is the obligatory bad boy who does the bullying (for what turns out to be ridiculous reasons despite having loved her for years) and the caring loving Ex. Neither MC felt original and they also both came across as quite weak. There was no background development and the FC/MCs relationships just simply were, they didn‘t really grow or develop.

The underlying plot was just frustrating and, whilst books are supposed to have a degree of fantasy this story contained too much suspension of belief and manufactured plot lines. The reality is that, as mentioned by many reviewers, the villain would have been reported to the police long before things got to where they did so the story was fundamentally flawed. I found the climax to be too unrealistic. The author just disregarded the reality that of course the police would be allowed to go into a house if they believed someone was in danger and not wait days for a warrant, or that a confession is not coerced if given up freely when a person is gloatingly describing what they have done or that you cannot simply keep a person tied up for endless days while you have movie nights and go away for a camping weekend (🙄) without someone asking questions especially if you have already spoken to the police….These just seemed a lazy way of trying to introduce more drama but came across as bizarre only for things to suddenly come to a head with no real explanation. I found the ending very frustrating.

The description of what the villain was doing I also felt treated a very serious subject without the sensitivity with which it should have been. It’s one thing to use this type of serious issue as a plot line but then deal with it properly and take it as seriously as it should be taken. Show respect to those that suffer this type of abuse. This author, as many authors seem to do, clearly just decided she wanted to introduce drama and angst to her story and did no research on the issue. Also, for the love of God, if you are going to have your characters beaten or hurt then don‘t have them jumping around the next minute or having sex. So many authors do this simply to introduce drama and without following through on the real consequences. If you have just been whipped with a belt until your legs give way and slapped across the face I am pretty sure that sitting down or getting off are not going to be high on your agenda.

There were a lot of clunky (or lazy) plot mechanisms such as the introduction of Remi’s friend Sara - clearly just an attempt by the author to create more drama when actually it just accentuated how stupid the FC was and also treated yet another serious issue - date rape - without any of the care it deserves. No one with any sense would have given Sara a second chance. The plot line around the MCs mother is again, clunky - of course the villain is going to suspect something and there were better ways for the mother to bring the villain to justice - as is the introduction of the boarding school which is clearly inserted to bring yet more drama but just comes across as out of the blue and over the top. Whilst you get a brief reference to the others from the boarding school at the end of Book 2, once the boys have returned home you hear no reference to it again nor do you get the impression anyone tries to help those left there.

In summary this duet was not for me and nor is this author. Too many unoriginal and manufactured plot lines and unengaging characters.

Wow am still processing my feelings about this book. I read it in one day and with that cliffhanger left me wanting more.

The characters are terrific. I want my own version of Knight. He a jerk but you get to see the other side. His twin brother Duke is the complete opposite very sweet, careing and lovable. Remi is the female lead who falls for both but is exactly what they need. The twist that come out is not at all what you expect. I 100% recommend this book and be prepared for the ride.

2 and 1/2 ⭐️ read for me. Writing style was juvenile. I’ve seen high school kids write better FanFiction. The only character I liked was Knight. And that cliffhanger ending? Are you for real? I abhor authors that pull that crap. I will read the sequel just because I feel like there won’t be any sort of conclusion to this unless I do and I didn’t hate it enough to not want to give it a chance. But won’t be reading anything else by this author.

We learn that Knight also likes Remi but for some reason is really mean to her and doesn’t want her near Duke. Her father says that he’ll take it out on Duke and he’s selling Remi the first chance he gets. That Knight needs to stay away from her and make it convincing. This book was such amazing start to this series and I can’t wait for more. Beware this has a cliffhanger but wow oh wow is it a book you need to read!

I was intrigued by the blurb and once I started this book I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved these characters and they give you all those high school feels as you read but with a few twists added in. What I absolutely loved about this book and the author's take on the two brothers wanting the same girl, was the twin aspect. Although these two brothers couldn't be anymore different in attitude and demeanor they seem to have more than just the same features but the same taste in a certain girl.

Remi, Duke, and Knight are flawed but complex characters that have different types of issues they are facing throughout this story. Remi was my favorite FMC because even though she comes from an abusive home, she's so sweet, genuine, and just really wants to be loved. Knight is the cocky football player who has a lot of secrets and has gone out of his way to bully Remi and keep her away from his brother at any cost. Duke is the sweetheart first boyfriend/boy next door type or the quintessential good guy to his darker twin.

This book was one I totally need more of and can't wait to see what happens next because that cliffhanger was extreme. If you love a good bully book with the second chance romance vibe but add in some serious twists along the way, then this is one you need to read ASAP!

I had the pleasure of reading this book early and I'm so glad because it has fast become a series I will want to continue on with and re-read. The author did an amazing job bringing these characters to life as you follow along as the story unfolds. It is a great start to a very promising series. I look forward to many more books by this author in the future. A definite must read!

Charming Cruel Boys
Author: Ebony Brewer

Smexy time in the first chapter gang, where are ya at?!
Boy, this book had so many layers and I had a great time getting to know Remi, Duke and Knight. Imagine your ex bf who went no contact to suddenly show up at the restaurant along with his very hot twin when your dad is supposed to introduce you to his girlfriend. Crazy right? It doesn't end there. The author takes us on a rollercoaster, there's angst, pulling away, more hot smex, loads of trauma to work through and the happily ever after is yet to be reached.

Two very different guys, with one similar thing in common- they are twins. One's peppy and the other is broody. They dress to match their attitude and Remi is the glue. When a loss drives a wedge between them, they seem to drift apart till they move in to stay with their mutual obsession. Remi needs saving, easily trusting of others and forgiving as well. I can't wait to see how their story ends. The author did promise more heartache before the gold sunset in their story.

Yes, dear readers, this one ends on a cliffy. But the next installment comes around in December and I will be sure to keep you updated with how I liked the second installment on this trios story.

There's a lot going on so please heed trigger warnings.

A Duke and Knight I wasn’t ready for

Charming Cruel Boys (Book 1) by Ebony Brewer

5/5 ⭐️
3/5 🌶️

TW: Please read these as some of the content in this book could cause triggering effects.

Tab00, enemies to lovers, bully romance? Step brother twins vying for the same girl? Unaliving? Mystery? Suspense? YES SIGN A GIRL UP!

Listen, this book isn’t going to be for everyone considering the characters in this book are in HS and have some pretty 🌶️ scenes together. I normally wouldn’t be into 🩸 play but listen - I know how the girl feels and sometimes you just gotta get the 🌶️ done to help.

Twins - Duke and Knight … polar opposites but both so much more than I bargained for. Remi is sweet and sunshine and everything Knight and Duke aren’t supposed to have.

Honestly this book is such a whirlwind and ends on an epic cliffhanger - so definitely starting the next book IMMEDIATELY.

Suspense in books gives me anxiety but this truly had me wanting more. I waited all but 4 chapters before I was buying the books to have as trophies on my shelf that’s how amazing this story was.

Mind blown!! I’m over here sucked in and then BAM!! That cliffy!!

Dark, bully, step-brothers, the charmer, the grumpy, and everything!! 🖤

Ebony does a phenomenal job with the characters, chemistry, push/pulls, twist and much more!

Remi care a lot about everyone. She falls in love only to have it ripped from her chest. There is also more to her and you came help but feel everything she feels.

Duke and Knight are twins and polar opposites. You have the charmer golden boy and the broody dark boy. There are secrets needing to be revealed.

This book will suck you in! From the beginning you’re done for. Before you know it, it ends and you will want to throw your kindle, ebook, physical book across the room. When I yelled NNNOOO at the end, my family looked at me like I was crazy! I can not wait for book 2!

This is the 1st book in the Duet. I knew this would be tough book to read but not this tough. It was brilliant. Kept me in the edge throughout the book.
This does end on a cliff hanger as it's part of a Duet.

Remy has had a cruel upbringing but still has managed to have a beautiful loving heart..

She has the perfect boyfriend but it's all a secret as she isn't allowed boyfriends.

One perfect night with her boyfriend Duke and then her life is destroyed after.
Duke and Knight are twins. Duke is the kind loving one and Knight is the tough and rough one.

Knight has always hated Remy but she didn't know why.
He bullies her at all times and was the reason Remy and Duke broke up.
Things come to light as the story unfolds and she is falling for the other twin aswell.
Behind the tough guy Knight has loved Remy all along.
This is a why choose MFM book. There is plenty of spicy moments too.
Come and join this crazy circus and fall in love with the gorgeous broken twins.

I’ve been a slump lately, and this book was good to pull me out. I can only hope the second part isn’t a disappointment like a lot of books have been lately.
I appreciate that most of the “bullying” was verbal. I love dark books but it’s more believable for me personally to also forgive our MMC and not be like … “are you f@*king kidding me?” After he did xyz to you?!
Her father sick 🤬. To be honest I didn’t call the twist of him being a pedophile. I was way off with my assumptions. I was rather irritated with the way Remi just forgave Sarah in the beginning… and didn’t read into her behaviors afterwards. Our poor sweet Duke is struggling at the moment and I’m not sure what will get through to him. Im also wondering where Rose comes into play. She doesn’t seem genuinely happy and im pretty sure Charles threatened to hit her…
Fingers crossed on the next book. Because I don’t know if I can handle a whole “personality change” or yelling at my book at a dumb FMC 😅

The book is set in high school, Remi is the daughter of the principal, who happens to be an abusive father behind closed doors. Duke is her ex-boyfriend who ghosted her after losing their v-card together & his twin brother Knight sometimes bully’s Remi. And everything changes when a surprise engagement is announced making Remi, Duke & Knight step siblings. Truths & feelings are revealed making everything a little more complicated but can the three still get their HEA?

I had this book for free during the 27th December stuff your kindle day and oh my christ it did not disappoint.

The sexual tension was👌 the character building was 👌

There is a a slight miscommunication situation but it is resolved in the first 3rd of the book and isn't the most pointless or childish I have come across in my life.

The book is left on a slight cliff hanger and I did binge it in a couple ours.

My only other quarm which isn't a massive issue to me personally and I might have just been tired reading it but I don't think the twins are described in all that much detail aside from one having long hair one not and both having navy eyes.

Knights refusal to acknowledge their obvious tension was borderline about to get boring, if it went on any longer it would have started getting - points.

But this was such a good book imo.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

This book was such a surprise! If you have triggers make sure you read them before starting this book. A LOT HAPPENS.

This book has steam, this book has mystery/suspense, this book has happiness, this book has sadness. It literally has it all.

I mean it’s taboo (which I lovvvvveeeee): stepbrothers vying for the same girl, YES PLEASE, put those stepbrothers as twins on top of it, HECK YES. Duke and Knight couldn’t be any different than what they are. One sweet and the golden retriever the other one being an ahole and black cat.

I absolutely loved Demi and my heart went out to Demi.

This book ends on a heck of cliffhanger and ready to dive in to book 2!

There are definitely a lot of Lies and secrets!!

This is book one in the Lies & Secrets duet so be prepared for a heart stopping cliffhanger ending!! Remi and Duke loved each other and then tragedy struck and they were torn apart. A year later and Remi just wants to get through her senior year so that she can get as far away from her abusive father as possible. Then she's gets the shock of her life when she's told her father is marrying Duke's mother. Not only will her ex that broke her heart be moving into her house but so will his brooding moody twin who seems to hate Remi. There are a lot of secrets and lies that until they start coming out no one is safe. This is a great read and I'm looking forward to reading book two, Delicate Depraved Plans.

I hate the miscommunication trope.

And this book does that trope in a horrible way imo. Not a realistic response from either of them. At least it was only 30% of the book.

It also bothers me when men are written like women. What man in real life can see a woman isn’t wearing makeup, except mascara? Most men think light makeup is no makeup. 😂 they aren’t going to be able to pick up the mascara detail.

Everything is forgiven so fast like it wasn’t a big deal. It makes no sense why she and duke would forgive him for all he’s done. Definitely not so quickly.

Mostly is was predictable storyline and boring almost all the way through. I’m not sure how I managed to finish it. I definitely won’t be continuing to the next one. This one just wasn’t for me at all.

Who has not wanted a two for one deal!?! These twins give you the best of both desires. Duke is the sweetest of boyfriends ever! The one that will wine and dine you, shower you with love and affection, and also make you see starts from the touch of his hand. Then there is Knight, who treats you like you are the worst person alive and intimidates you with all he is. All the while secretly loving and longer for you. These brothers become your loves, protectors, and lifelines to salvation. This story has some pretty intense trigger warnings so be sure to read them but I can say that it will be the best story you will read all year!

This was a great book overall. It deals with some darker issues that I was not expected but it’s not overly dark with those issues. It’s done very well. This book has lots of family secrets that I can’t wait to get the answers to in book 2. The FMC is has a terrible relationship with her awful father. The two brothers are completely opposites. One is dark moody and hold on secrets. The other is our FMC first love and so caring and sweet at the start. Things happen and come out that keep you guessing. The spice was about a 2 and was hot during this scenes.

Let's talk about this book and how it absolutely ripped my heart to shreds. I fell in love with all of the characters. The FMC is strong, kind, and much more than I could have hoped for. The Trigger warnings in this book are not a joke so please read them before you jump in. Now Duke is an amazing dimensional and strong person while his brother is a hard person to love. Knight has potential but his words cut like a knife. I read this book in one sitting and it does have a cliffhanger ending. This book was an incredible read.
