Quick and easy read. Nothing life changing or thought provoking, but a fun book.

This was a random pick-up - I've never read Fay Weldon but I know she's popular in the UK, and I just love that title and book cover, don't you? Don't judge me, but in my book bargain haunts in the city, I just love an impulse buy! Yeah, I have a confession to make: I judge books by the cover. I can’t help myself, especially if I don’t recognize the book title or the author. And then when the cover captures my fancy, that’s the only time I’ll scan through the rest of the data: title, author, blurb. Saves me a lot of time, and the method has worked for me so far.

As for this collection, there were two or three I liked. Moral of this story: don't judge the book by the cover. I say to that - Oh well, you can't win 'em all!

A review of Weldon's memoirs caused me to check out a couple Weldon books from the library [selection is always limited of English-language books], including this one.

Long ago I read Down among the Women, and xxx Lives of a She-Devil.

This slim volume is short stories. The first two seemed really good. A Knife for Cutting Mangoes subtly shows us a woman and her feelings through [silent] monologue. Most of the other stories seemed merely a clever idea worked into a story, but without the kind of insight I look for in fiction. Quite likely there is much more to each story that meet's my eye; usually is. I'll read the other book I found in the library.

Didn't realise I even had this book till a housesitter returned it to me :-)

Was a good late night quick read when i had too much work on to really be reading :-)
I always forget what a great short story writer Weldon is. And how much she confuses me sometimes wrt to feminism.. there's a story n here i would love to do a reading group on - I still can't decide whether it is sneakily feminist or anti-feminist. She's a tricky one, for sure.
