Loose strings tied. New Empires established. A knock-down drag-out victory.
Artorian welcomes home old friends, glad for their company. Having finally returned Cal to the seat of his sanctuary, he must cast aside other whims and assume the mantle of Administrator, continuing the diplomacy that came with the creation of Accords. Regardless of agreements, some diplomacy must always be spoken with fists. To prepare for the second coming of Eternium, Cal’s space must stand firm, resolute, and without danger… even if Artorian must contend with a city of tears to attain that result.
Caltopia is blooming with new growth, possibilities, and fresh chances. Unfortunately, some old weeds have dug their roots deep, and require plucking so the population might thrive. For many who discover the great trials to come, the new ways of standing on their own two feet are to their liking…
But there are some who will never willingly stop waving the flag of what once was.
More bad puns, more arbitrary adjustments to the magic system that ultimately don't actually change anything, more characters trading interesting personality and behaviors for childish whimsy. Seriously, we went from a story about saving this dudes unofficial grandchildren and fighting off demons to reading about a bureaucrat filing paperwork and providing unsolicited (and often poorly conceived) 'slice of life' advice to everybody around him.
No real plot advancements in this book and honestly people can just skip this entry without missing much. Only reason I am still reading is that I am interested in how this will tie into the Completionist timeline. Although, I expect I will have to slog through many more books like this to get there.
I'm vibing with the completion of the right and left hand checklists as the theme for what is presumably the next few books at least, but it feels as though the tempo is slowing. That's not to say that it needs more action or fight scenes or what have you, but it feels like there's more filler in between of each 'thing' that happens. Such is the nature of a long series I guess. I think I'd like to see filler replaced with depth of encounter? I don't know if that's the way to put it. It felt as though Artorian was with the wood elves for ages in the beginning of the Archives, and while he was there for a while chronologically, I think it felt like more because of the number of significant small things that happened, now it feels like far more time is passing chronologically, but Artorian doesn't really have the same density of experiences in each place he goes.
All in all I'm happy with the work and will preorder 13 when it comes out. There was less of the pop culture reference in this than in Accords and I'm happy with that, John has definitely gotten his pronunciations more closely in line with what Travis established and that is MUCH appreciated. Insofar as narration goes, the only thing I really think could be better next time is cadence and intonation.
"....and he WASN'T about it." vs. "...and he wasn't ABOUT. IT."
Y'all are doin' good, keep it up 👍 I'll send in my submission sooner or later.
Artorian continues his meddlesome ways as a supervisor in this imaginary world within a world (within a world?). And a large fight has to happen with bizarre styles and effects thrown around as they are needed. And still Artorian manages to find a sneaky way to win without winning.
It’s hard to imagine how much writing this author has been doing. Several books this year, and it seems more are coming - even though the series seems to be getting close to the end. (Assuming the end is when the world of the Completionist Chronicles starts.)
Seriously the last two books were cute but mostly sooo boring. Also the author can't seem to stick with the character's names. It gets so confusing as to why they go back to previous names. I feel like so much of what is going on is honestly filler and the real story is mostly over. Sometimes it feels like a bad sitcom of maybe friends meets team knightrider and maybe alf too. Sometimes it feels more like a constantly running commentary vs a real actual story.
As always Dennis has done an amazing job with the characters and storyline I know 12 book can eventually suffer from burnout and random plot threads being overlooked but Dennis does a great job keeping everything flowing and tying things up. Ready for book 13 lol
As always Artorian is heavy hitting yet joyful, boisterous and quiet. The pain this time hits much harder, but we are left with the joys to come. Just such a great entry to this series. I cannot wait for what is next.
It’s still a fun read, but it feels more drawn out than previous installments. Several lectures by Artorian that seemed to say a lot of nothing but hopefully set up for future books. Still a good read and fun series. Please enjoy
I enjoyed the first half of the book it picked up more once we got to camalot but once the end battle started that’s when it became great and the ending was extremely cute and heartwarming
Not sure why, but this one was a real slog to get through. Felt more like reading a thesis on ethics. Even the action scenes were dragged out and couldn't save it.
