Tamar really struggled writing this bio, in part because it’s in third person, but mostly because she hasn’t decided whether she’s primarily a psychologist who loves writing, or a writer with a lifelong fascination with psychology.
She must have been someone pretty awesome in a previous life (past life regression indicated a Care Bear), because she gets to do both. Beginning her career as a youth worker, then a secondary school teacher, before becoming a school psychologist, Tamar helps children and teens to live and thrive despite life’s hurdles like loss, relationship difficulties, mental health issues, and trauma.
As lover of reading, inspired by books that sparked beautiful movies in her head, Tamar loves to write young adult romance. To be honest, it was probably inevitable that her knowledge and love of literature would translate into writing emotion driven stories of finding life and love beyond our comfort zones. A lifetime consumer of knowledge, Tamar holds degrees in Applied Science, Education and Psychology. When not reading, writing or working with teens, Tamar can be found with her husband and two children enjoying country life on their small slice of the Australian bush. The fact that Maddy's a vampire hunter and Caleb's a vampire doesn't stop their feelings for each other. Not everyone is happy about that, but dark forces needs to be faced and they all have to step up to the fight. However, it's not always easy to know who's friend and who's foe...
This book continues exactly where the last book ended; with Maddy jumping in the grave to Purgatory to follow Quinn. Since Caleb is a vampire he can't go after Maddy, so he needs to find another solution quickly. The action takes off right from the start and we don't get many chances to breathe along the way!
We continue to get both Maddy's and Caleb's POV's, which makes it easy to understand that they sometimes want different things. Sometimes I really feel that they're on opposite sides, and I think that this will never work out, but at the same time they're stronger together. They've both developed since the first book and I can hardly wait to see how it will end eventually!
* I received an ARC from the authors and I'm giving my honest review. *
This is book four of the Keepers of the Chalice and the main characters are Maddy and Caleb. The story continues just after they and their allies defeat Malcolm and the hordes of undead he helped to raise. Quinn has the obsidian with in her, but is only truly a spirit that belongs in Purgatory, placed in the body of Ileana Merrick by a necromancer. When Quinn suddenly jumps into the grave they have uncovered, Maddy jumps right in after her, knowing Caleb cannot without dying. They know there is some evil entity in Purgatory that has been controlling Quinn, but it isn’t until Maddy chases after Quinn, that she finds out the identity of this powerful and ancient entity. He is Orion and Purgatory was initially formed to hold him, but unlike the spirits there waiting to move on, the reapers left him there and he has his full form and powers. He has put a block on any souls moving on and stops Quinn and Maddy from exiting the same way. On top of this, Caleb’s new role as Vampire King sees him beholding to a vampire council who seem to want him as a puppet and figurehead only! Many of the council and other vampires don’t like the fact he was related to Kenna DeVoe and started his human life off as a vampire hunter, until he was turned as a punishment! His link to the vampire council, Elias, seems to be of the same mind and make sure he does as the council wants and not what he or especially Maddy might want him to do! They soon find a much bigger danger has already arrived on Earth, in the form of a Cherufe, a dark monster made of lava and rocks, that it seems Felix and the Rogue Order or the Merrick Industries group have brought forth. Merrick Industries are already guilty of experimenting with shifters of all kinds and their vampire cure is not exactly a cure, but a complete eradication of vampires from the world, if they get their way. Malcolm is in league with the remaining Merrick heir, Caroline, sister of Ileana whose body Quinn was placed in! Nim and the extensive library at Veritas are soon put to good use again, looking for ways to stop this black smoke monster, the Cherufe, which took Quinn who still has the obsidian within her spirit. More assistance comes in the guise of Blaise and Sierra, one a powerful and knowledgeable witch. They have contacts who can help and a spell that may be able to track Quinn and where the cure may be. Add in a demi-god Alexandra with a weapon to kill the Cherufe, brought to the fight by Arielle, and then a demon with red wings, Reign, who is Arielle’s fiancée. Arielle has to get back to classes, so can’t join them as they raid a secret Merrick location. The vampires sent along by Elias and the vampire council make plain their dislike of Caleb and the battel begins even before they face the dangers within. Maddy and Caleb realised after her trip to Purgatory, how much they actually loved each other and realise they are better off fighting whatever they face together, united, rather than alone, as Calen will soon find out when he comes across the Cherufe! There is already division within the hunter’s organisation, the Order and now with the vampires, with the council and newly named vampire king. But if they allow this division to continue, it is the world that will lose out, as evil entities such as Orion and Cherufe’s are unleashed into the human world, causing widespread death and destruction. The last descendant of Dracula, with also his powers as a warlock, brought into the world of hunters, means Maddy has far more power within her than she could ever know, and Caleb coming from a long line of hunters then turned into a vampire, the very thing he used to kill, makes this duo the perfect pair to understand the opposite sides world and expectations. To help Zariah, they still need the dreamcatcher, but the Chalice of Solomon could be an even more dangerous relic in the hands of the unknown necromancer, who raised Quinn from Purgatory, all to get revenge upon the evil that killed his wife and millions of others, and to get his wife back in his arms once again. Whether his wife, a witch, would really have wanted her husband to turn to the dark magic of necromancy to bring her back is another thing altogether, He is too blinded by his love and wishes for revenge! The obsidian within Quinn is seemingly key to numerous beings plans for the future of this world and for domination over others. Whether Maddy’s idea for the cure, to help those vampires who want to return to their human lives and also to turn the most evil will work, especially when Caleb is thinking of how he can make vampires stronger like the enhanced shifters they faced, could soon bring a huge division in their relationship and how they can work together. There are those who want the relics and the obsidian for their own evil plans and they aren’t concerned about playing Maddy and Caleb against each other and hopefully forcing them apart, or even seeing them dead. A lot going on and just as it seemed that Maddy and Caleb were finally together and on the same page romantically. Maddy has also now been targeted by an ancient cult and they clearly mean business. Danger is not letting Maddy have the normal student life she hoped for and with her magic and being girlfriend to the new vampire king, there will be many more issues for the two to face together. I look forward to seeing what happens next, but may be in for a bit of a wait! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
We're already at the third installment of the Chalice Keepers, or as I think would be more logical at this point in time: the Vampire series. Or the Obsidian Chronicles...
Speaking of: Vampire Undone starts the second after the previous bookended. And I do mean that literally. If you were looking for first time information on this series, my next sentence might ruin it for you... So scoot!
Maddy just jumped into "The Grave”, also known as the portal to Purgatory in the hopes of catching Quinn- better known as Obsidian vessel. It is another knee jerk reaction on her part, but by now we know the Dracula – descendant acts before she thinks. Meanwhile our newly minted Vampire King Caleb is freaking out because 1. Maddy 2. The big bad is in Purgatory 3.Maddy 4. Oh, yes. The Obsidian. And when we finally do have this scary meet, I am not really that scared after all.
If I sound a bit flippant, it is probably because book 1 promised me so many things and I'm not really getting them. Possible really scary moments fall flat, for me at least. Caleb is now this big honcho but if seems more like a handy plot device than anything else - also, what is the plot exactly now? And unlike Gabby and Arielle, the female leads of the other Keeper Chronicles series, I am still not really rooting for this one. Not to mention the love story of this part of the Keeper universe remains lukewarm.
What also bothers me, since we are indirectly speaking about the Light and the Grail books: if a review with one or more spoilers is highly frowned upon, why isn't a book? Tamar Sloan and lvy Lane keep giving important information that can ruin scenes and even whole parts of the other books.
Example: Maddy has jumped into Purgatory and Gabby is speaking about Orion, the spirit slaver we heard about in BK2 and who is in Purgatory too. Not only are we told Orion was once beaten before, but exactly how and by whom. That happened in the last books as well. Since the other Keepers Chronicles series haven't had any new books out (a huge shame! ) that means I not just know what type of big bad they're going to encounter in an upcoming title, but that they'll beat them and how. I might not know details, but why? Why? Explaining who Orion is and why he's a threat could have been done in a million different ways and by an equal amount of different people.
Of course all the above is just 1/3 of the book and like previous books something new happens as soon as Event A has been solved. But I noticed by then my reading speed was already decreasing drastically. Up to the point where I preferred a Netflix series over reading further (I did that later). Now, Stranger Things IS awesome. But me choosing TV over print...rarely happens.
Is it suddenly an awful series then? No. The same things that were okay or good about the books in the first place still exist: it is very easy language, making it a simple and fast read for the target group and non- natives alike. It is still action-packed. Caleb and other known characters are likable - though some fleshing–out part and character growth would be nice - and there is a huge variety of non-typical enemies, even though they're being used across the Keeper universe -board. And a nice extra in Vampire Undone, of which we already witnessed the beginning in the previous book, is the fact Maddy is growing into some kickass powers. Also, the romance gets a little more depth with some important realisations on either side.
To sum it up: If you really enjoyed the other books in the Chalice Keepers then Vampire Undone will be another hit for you. The story goes further from where we left them, Maddy & Caleb are finally an item and the style and type of action remain similar. Just like the style of writing.
The aforementioned -for me- is actually the reason to take a break from this particular series. I might get the books at a later time and perhaps write about them then. But it has become obvious I suffer from "Vampire Unxxx” fatigue a tad bit. I simply much prefer the other Keeper books and think they had/have more appeal: more emotion, better tension, better romance. Like always: that is subjective of course, but the way I look at it. Despite the many 5 star ratings the Chalice -Vampire titles get.
Taking a break might also prevent me from letting any kind of annoyance interfere with an honest opinion. Not that I think that has happened now, but starting any future books on a bad note isn't good (NB. Any annoyances and series-fatigues do stem from the books themselves though).
Rating: It probably comes as no surprise this is another 3 stars. To me Vampire Undone isn't bad, but it certainly isn't great either. Other than what I've written above it is hard to pinpoint what has put me off of this title this much, so I won't even try. I'm letting that particular feeling go as much as I can, and rate according to genre, target and the previous titles. That makes this a decent enough book for a “triple” .
NB. I was given an ARC via Booksprout but am under no obligation to write this review.
First of all, don't even think about reading this book until you have read the first two books in the series if you want to fully enjoy the story. Caleb, the newly appointed Vampire King, and Maddy, the last living descendant of Dracula, continue in their search for several supernatural artifacts. Hopefully, if they can find these items, they can stop the evil from entering the world.
As Maddy starts to come to terms with her newly discovered Warlock magic, she and Caleb are also starting to acknowledge their feelings for each other. But, since Maddy is a Vampire Hunter and Caleb is the Vampire King, how is that going to work. "Fate has an odd sense of humor."
This book is an intricately woven tale of witches, spirits, vampires, shifters, and other supernatural creatures, along with a trip or two to Purgatory. It is fast paced and full of magic and battles, but you will need to slow down in order to keep track of all the characters and their relationships.
Vampire Undone is the third book in this series and it is truly amazing. The relationship between Maddy and Caleb develops in a way that makes it perfect. Each of the two faces difficult situations, which makes them realize that by leaning on the other, they are much stronger and I love that. Cora's person as she has evolved is phenomenal as well as Mason's Little winks from other characters, make you jump for joy. With each book, certain mysteries are revealed as well as others appear and leave you wanting to know the answer. As always the mythology of this world expands and does not stop blowing your mind. Ever since I started reading it, I really couldn't stop until I finished it. Wow, this story is addictive and I can't wait to read the next book.

The authors did it again, what an amazing 3rd book in the series.
As Maddy and Caleb & all the other get closer to an answer another question comes along, i just adore the characters and their journey.
The story picks up where book 2 ended and i loved that made it super easy to get back into the story without having to reread the last chapter of book2.
The moment between Caleb & Maddy in the woods by ruins! Yeah not a big fan, i know its not a steamy romance but that specefic moment i had hoped it be a bit more.!
Im super eager for the final book in this series and i have high hopes.
Vampire Undone is a wonderfully written tale of magic, intrigue, and danger. The writer has a great descriptive tone that leaves a lasting impression on all that she describes. She creates an imaginative world, complete with lore, beautiful scenes, and interesting characters, all enhanced by a well-developed plot. Even though I haven't read the first two books in the series, I really enjoyed this third book and I can't wait to begin at the start.

It’s a good read ! Has a lot of characters, but the main characters are Maddy and Caleb. Maddy is a witch and Caleb is vampire. Almost forgot Quinn, Orin’s spirit which is residing in Quinn’s body. Maddy and Caleb are trying to locate the Chalice, Grail and Dream Catcher. Quinn has control of the Obsidian that Maddy needs. With all that’s going on Maddy and Caleb hear of a cure for vampires. Is it really a cure ? You got to read to find out !.

Fast paced, action packed and a little steamy, we jump straight back into Maddy & Caleb’s story and it’s every bit as exciting and thrilling as the previous two. The fight to beat evil continues though who is friend and who is foe is hard to determine and Maddy and Caleb must stand united to save the day. Gripping, entertaining, enthralling this is a most excellent addition in this paranormal romance series.

Maddy and Caleb story continue here. And they have a lot to overcome - they are natural enemies, and the trouble seem to find them wherever they go. Beside that, their feelings to eachother don’t make the things easier. You must check out their story - their fight, their struggle, their love. It is a wonderful adventure!.

This was a great entry in the Keepers of the Chalice series. It had what I enjoyed from the other two books, I thought this was a unique concept for a paranormal romance. Tamar Sloan has a great writing style that I always enjoy reading.

Fun action, interesting storyline, and cool mystical elements. The characters make some questionable choices, but they are still entertaining. A little annoying, but entertaining. Definitely start with the beginning of this series for the full story. Sweet romance; still a bit too slow going, but I like the connection there. Looking forward to more.
This series has gotten better with each book. I like how she's progressing and finding new stuff about her power's as it goes along N also their relationship keeps me wondering what's going to happen next and it's not too predictable. Can't wait to read what comes next.

This book follows Maddy through Purgatory as she chases after Quinn, looks at the budding romance between Caleb and Maddy, and much more. The story has plenty of action and romance, ending in a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

This was a good book. The story was well written and the characters were well developed within the story. I loved the chemistry. And I liked the ending.
An amazing story that will keep you reading. Caleb and Mattie’s romance builds slowly so we feel the emotions with them. Well written with strong characters.
