Sisters of Isis #1

The Summoning

Rate this book
Following the incredible success of Daughters of the Moon , Lynne Ewing has created an all new fun and hip teen fantasy series.

Based in Egyptian mythology and set in modern-day Washington, D.C., Sisters of Isis follows the lives of Meri, Sudi, and Dalila, three fifteen-year-old girls who have just discovered they are descendants of very powerful ancestors—Egyptian pharaohs. From these ancestors they’ve inherited magical powers of transformation, the ability to cast spells from the Book of Thoth, and, as they will soon learn, the responsibility of protecting the world from the evil forces of Chaos.

We all remember the enchanting world that Lynne Ewing had brought us in THE DAUGHTERS OF THE MOON and then in SONS OF THE DARK. And now Ewing does it again with her new series, SISTERS OF ISIS.

Sudi never thought that one note could change her life; she just thought it would give her a chance at dating her longtime crush, Scott. But that note that fell out of her locker was not from Scott. Instead of Scott at the nice restaurant, he's replaced with Abdel and two other girls. Abdel was sent by the Hour Priest, a secret Egyptian society, to tell Sudi, along with Meri and Dalila, that they are all descendants of the Egyptian Pharaohs and have powers that only they can use to stop the Cult of Anubis.

Like any other teenager, none of the girls believe Abdel--just think Mia Thermopolis discovering she was a princess (SHUT UP!). As each girl tries to get away from Abdel, he makes sure that they each get a scroll, but of course they think nothing of it. Curiosity takes over, though, and before they know it, all three girls turn into unusual creatures: Sudi, a bird; Meri, a cat; and Dalila, a cobra. Their destiny has been set for them and if they still don't believe it, maybe the evil forces will help them figure it out.

THE SUMMONING is another great read from Lynne Ewing. The tales that Ewing brews up and the world that she creates in the SISTERS OF ISIS is even more imaginative and creative. Reading THE SUMMONING just reminds me of how Ewing can take the reader out of reality and into a fantasy that not only haunts but amazes them. THE SUMMONING is only the beginning and the next novel should be just as amazing.

This is my first book by Ewing. The story is unique with its use of mythology. I like that there is humor within the storytelling as well.

I used to really enjoy this author's Daughters of the Moon series. It was light, interesting and fun. Different types of teen girls banding together to take out the greater evil. Even falling in love and trying to be regular kids along the way. But with this book, I have got to say I saw similar glimpses of the same thing. But I don't know if the author was writing in regards to the times or what exactly. But I for sure was not loving how the main character's prime goals were falling in love and losing her virginity to some guy and to just party it up. I get there are some 16 year olds out there that live for a good party. But the main character truly felt directionless at times. And her sidekicks/friends were no better.

Also there was some rather confusing points in the story. Like when it sounded like Sudi was going to public school and Meri and her crush were going to the more fancy school in the beginning. But wound up everyone seemed to be in the same classes by the end of the book. There was also the weirdness of Dalia being trained to be set up for an arranged marriage to some prince or something and yet it sounded like her parents were just anthropologists or Egyptologist, so I was uber confused where and how the arranged marriage aspect came into play. And my personal faves on the confusion front, how Sudi acted like she was all super cool and drank beer and was all "I can't believe I have to be teamed up with these girls that haven't even kissed a boy or sipped beer", but she was jumping at shadows left and right herself. Also two characters were mentioned as taking drugs out of left field and I could have sworn neither of those characters EVER mentioned it before. So weird.

So all of that aside and although I love nearly all things relating to Egypt mythology. I don't think I can read this series, regrettably. Just a certain aspect that I was familiar with reading from a Ewing book was not present in this book for me any more. But for others they might still really enjoy it.

This is the first book in the series for Sisters of Isis by Lynne Ewing. I really enjoyed her books. I like this series because she incorporated Ancient Egyptian culture and mythology into the books. I love reading anything with Ancient Egypt in it. So this series was a pleasure to read. I liked the way she wrote this book and the series. The first four books goes through 4 different girls point of views but at the same time tells a story about a evil being that is trying to take over something or stop them from saving the world. I enjoyed reading how she introduces her characters. I feel like I know the characters more and more with each page written. These girls are learning about their new identities as descendents of Egyptian pharaohs who has bestow upon them magical gifts. But they must learn to control their powers before the evil forces take over. I enjoyed this series a lot. I would recommend this book.

The Summoning was a great book, full of magic and adventure, three girls are disendents of acient kings and queens who have magical powers, those traits are passed on to the girls. They start to discover their powers and evil is comming to the surface. A group of priest capture a boy from their school and the girls have to learn how to use their powers before time runs out to save the boy and themselves from death.
I really liked this book it had some strange parts that you had to warp your brain around but in the long run it was worth all the headachs. It was full of mystery and most of all action!! It was a super book and i know that i am going to read the series now, (this book got me hooked).

I gave this book 2 stars only because I love Egyptian lore and mythology. Beyond that the book was predictable with characters that I disliked because they were so unintelligent an never adapted or grew in the two stories. Not an author for me, which is sad because some young adult books can be so enjoyable. I really wanted this one to be one of those, but it isn't.

The Summoning, by Lynne Ewing, is the first book in the Sisters of Isis series. This books centers around three teen girls with normal lives in Washington, D.C. until they learn that they are descendants of ancient Egyptian pharaohs with incredible powers and they must save the world from the evil Cult of Anubis. These three girls at first do not accept this great responsibility that has fallen upon them do they rise to occasion or do they run and hide? This book was I originally found my love for the fantasy genre. This book is not just about magic, but this book comes with themes of women empowerment and self-discovery. These three girls start out as strangers but grow close and together they own their powers. This book series was released in the 2007, however these themes are just as significant, as they these books were released just yesterday. These girls are going to be tried, underestimated, disrespected, just any other underdogs, and they fight back, however this war has only just begun. After accepting their fate, the girls learn to use their powers just as they are soon attacked the god Anubis. At the same time, they try to carry on normal lives with school, families, and boys, while forming a close bond as the Sisters of Isis.

Okay so this book was kind of ass
It was alright at surface level and I liked the mythology and stuff but the characters were so annoying and there was so much emphasis on romance for no reason
To start off, Sudi talks to her love interest like once and the second time is when he fucking breaks into her room like wtf is that. And the one time they do talk, he like stalks her in the woods and won’t leave her alone until she says that she’s meeting another guy which is soooo cringe
There’s also the fact that Dalila’s sole motivation is getting married and like why?? She’s like 14 or 15 and as she’s plummeting to her death all she says is “I’ll never be a bride now”
All the characters were so incredibly flat and their sole motivation seemed to be getting a boyfriend rather than, I don’t know, STAYING ALIVE
Anyways this sucked, but there weren’t that many grammatical errors, so I’m giving it two stars

"No one can change your fate, not even the gods. You must stand against evil and protect the world. YOu are the Descendants of the great kings of Egypt"

Hey guys, so I finished Sisters of Isis: Volume 1 (Sisters of Isis, #1-2) by Lynne Ewing. This super novel combined I believe two books in the series, The Summoning and the Divine One. And let me tell you, I honestly think I could have lived without reading this novel. Now dont get me wrong, it was bad perse, it just wasnt what I was expecting. Yes although this novel had plenty of action packed events, it just didnt capture me like I thought it would. Which was why I breeze through this novel. It also helped that this novel wasnt packed with background/scenic details, mainly just external and some internal dialogue. And the exterior descriptions it did have, wasnt that much to care for. Anyway, in my opinion, this novel felt kind of like a soap opera. Everything about a relationship between one character or another was dramatized. So packed with petty teenage emotions like jealousy, or envy, or lust. It was just kind of awkward, reading about how one of the MC was pining over one guy, trying to get over another, but then the other guy interferes, or a girl. Ugh, the teenage girls in this novel were so rude and bratty. I swear. Hell, some of the guys were as well. Kids can be so cruel, i'll tell ya. SO yeah, the relationship drama was practically nearly the cetner of the story. Who likes who,who hates who, who is jealous of who, who wants who, who wants to stop who from getting who, it was never ending. It felt like I was just thrust into teenage chaos and any hopes of order were only scattered throughout the books. I honestly dont know why I continued with this novel. OH wait, I do. Because I love my egyptian mythology so much I had to see at least that aspect through. And well, the novel didnt entirely butcher it. It played out...okayish. Least the author got what each God/Goddess ruled over right, mostly. And the names werent too spelled wrong. And the general myth surrounding the main gods of Egypt was mostly correct. So yeah...Gah, I know it sounds like I am bashing on this novel. I'm sure it was a good book and story, just not for me. It didnt click for me and that's way my opinions of this novel sound negative. But please feel free to form your own opinions. The story was nice enough and was coherent and the events flowed nicely. It just wasnt a novel that I found particularly captivating. That's just my opinion, take it for what its worth. Okay, I prattled on long enough. As always, if you guys have any questions or comments, drop em below. Till next time. Bye.

Sudi menjalani kehidupan sebagaimana gadis lain seusianya.

Diceritakan lewat Sudi's point of view.

Maybe it's just my age :)

I think he story is very entertaining and full of new problems that the characters face each chapter. I find the book easy to read and understand and I would recommend it to anyone who is into mythology.
Sudi, Meri, and Dalila a student in high school, and one day they are invited to a restaurant and Abdel tells them they are descendants of Egyptian pharaohs and the Cult is after them to kill them. Strange things start to happen and Sudi wants to be out of the hunt, later she learns to accept her Fate.
Sudi didn't like the her new self, she had to protect her friends from the attacks sent by the Cult to kill her. She couldn't get a boyfriend and strange things always happened to her making her look crazy in front of her friends. Sudi hated that she was a descendant and she proposed to drop out of the mission several times in the story. She finally started to accept her fate, after her Meri, and Dalila miraculously overcome the priest in the underworld and saved her dream boyfriend Scott from being turned into a demon, She leaned to accept her fate and to continue her life as a pharaoh's daughter and a high school girl at the same time. Sudi came from hating her destiny to accepting her fate and trusting that her friends will help her along the way. Her change in altitude helped add more action and fighting scenes to the story instead of all the times she used to run away from the killers sent by the Cult

I enjoyed the book because I could easily understand it and the book was full of problems that these three girls had to overcome. Also the author tries the best to link the story to the modern world by mentioning the fact that Sudi and her friends had to hide their magic and fight secretly so they that they are not considered freaks by the society which makes common sense.I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading about mythology, and likes reading short books full of adventure.

What I liked:
-Sudi, Meri, and Dalila. The three main girls in this book are very interesting, and they’re all different from one another. One thing I like with this series is that there aren’t a ton of main characters, like with the Daughters of the Moon series, so each girl can get a little more focus and the three of them seem special. Sudi was the main character for this book, and I like that she’s not the typical goody-two-shoes kind of girl. She’s done some things, and she’s not embarrassed about it, which makes her relatable.
-Concept. I absolutely love the idea behind this series. I’ve always had a fascination with mythology, and I have to say, Egyptian mythology is pretty awesome. I love the names of the gods and goddesses and I love the spells and magic involved. There wasn’t much of that in this book, probably since it was the first in the series and the introduction to the good stuff. Hopefully there will be more in the later books.

What I disliked:
-Writing style. I’m a huge fan of Lynne Ewing’s books, but I wish she wrote at a little more adult level. Her writing always comes across as kind of childish, like middle-grade section stuff, while the subject matter is always more adult. The two don’t mesh very well, because you’re left with a book for older teens, with writing that only satisfies younger teens.

Overall, this was just a short read that was the introduction to the series. I love the author and her ideas, but her writing leaves something to be desired. The characters are a little flat at the moment, but hopefully they’ll round out eventually. I would recommend this to anybody interested in unique mythologies, and teens with superpowers. If you loved the Daughters of the Moon series, you'll love this.3.5

A normal teenager, Sudi, that hangs out with her friends, has troubles with her sisters while thinking about the recent broke up with his boyfriend and has a crush in one of the nicest boys in the school. Her life is a complete disaster and if that didn’t seemed enough a weird news that changes her life entirely ruins her life or she think it does. Sky Terrace, a very fancy restaurant, was the night where Sudi discovered her true reality. Abdel the guy that was waiting for her tells Sudi, Meri the daughter of a famous politician and an unfamiliar face named Dalila that the Egyptian cult wants to destroy them Confusion runs through them and they do not believe his illogical explanation, descendants of Isis, the Egyptian goddess are what he assures they are. Lynne Ewing the author of one of my favorite books uses in every word, phrase and sentence characterization. The images that his words make are so vivid that even the setting can be described as a character. He clearly makes us understand that confidence in your self is what makes you a hero. “She soared, half girl, half bird, pure goddess, toward the rising moon, enjoying the enchantment of this night. They had been victorious, but she knew that this was only the 1st of many battles.More than just a book The Summoning shows the process of how life makes us reflect if we are the most important…the message that this book gave to me is open your heart and your eyes to reality because there is more than just that.

Oops, I started this book today and finished by 9:30pm. Wow that was a very fast read, I have also been cleaning house in breaks – washing clothes – took a nap even, and still finished today.

So this book will go back to the library where I got it yesterday.

I enjoyed the book. I thought the eguiption teachings were dry but the story was familiar which was interesting. I enjoyed this story the first time I read it… well the similar story that I read. ->“The Prophecy”

Ok I will tell you the similarity’s I noticed … but if you haven’t read the book … TURN NOW!
- – warning – - spoilers – - ahead – -

Both books are about three teen girls with destiny’s to use their powers (they just developed) to fight evil. They both are about the otherworld, mythology fairylands Gods & Goddesses.

In one book the girls were given stones when told of their destiny. In the other book they were given scrolls when they were told.

Both books described tattoosbirthmarks the girls had – proof of their destiny.
Both had a special book the girls had to read from and study to learn of themselves – in one “the prophecy” and the other “the book of thoth”.
————-
Oh well you grab the book and make your own comparisons.
————-
Like I said – it was a good book and I will get the rest of the series. I have already went to the library website and placed a hold on the next book in the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

"The Summoning" had many good qualities as a book, and I did rather enjoy reading it, but there are a few less-than-excellent things about it that caused me to give it a two-star review. For instance, the main characters could have used a little more flesh on their metaphorical bones. Their personalities were so similar that they seemed a bit like slightly edited versions of the same basic teenage girl model. The writing style had potential, but was not entirely solidified, meaning that I found the authenticity, individualism, and creativity I search for in the voice of an author to be lacking in this particular work. In general, "The Summoning" was a simple book that didn't provoke much thought, and while it could have been excellent in the right hands, in general I was not impressed and will not take the time to finish the series, let alone buy any of the books. I would recommend it to a young girl who is interested in the worldly side of life and doesn't want to put too much effort into interpreting the words she reads. (No offense at all is meant to the people who fit in this category.)

Sudi wakes up from sleepwalking outside her house. She had also been having an unusual dream about walking on sand. Something looks into the house and scares her. She had also just broken up with some guy named Brian. She wakes up later with some kind of a walking stick next to her.

She catches her two sisters using an Ouiji board. They are twelve and believe in using magic. They warn her that someone is after her.

She goes to a party thinking she will meet a boy, but instead meets Dalila and Meri, and a boy named Abdel who represents the Hour priests. He tells the three women that they are œdescended from the divine pharaohs of ancient Egypt.

Sudi ends up naked in a dumpster, but Meri is able to help her. Dalila says she's apparently been trained her whole life for some role involving fighting evil beings. All three girls are attacked by Anubis.

Suddenly all three girls are passing through "gates" of some kind.

Sudi can turn into a bird, Meri a cat, and Dalila a combination crocodile-lion.

They have to fight an evil priest, free Scott, deal with a bunch of demons, then one hidden demon, and meet Isis Herself.

I started this series just to see if it was any good - I'm a fan of the DotM series of hers and love it despite it's silliness at times, and hoped this one would be as good. I'm kind of still on the fence about how I feel about this series.

It clearly follows a very similar formula as DotM. A group of girls discovering they're connected to ancient mythology and gods, and have to fight against the growing forces of darkness as they learn about their new powers. Romance is sprinkled through out. However, there are some differences. The cast is much smaller this go around with only three girls wheras DotM had six. It also suffers from being not quite as clear in regards to the magic and mythology, though I've found that Egyptian mythology seems to be a bit murkier and a little more confusing in some aspects which may be part of the issue.

As a first book, it's not really all bad. Sudi, much the same as Vanessa of DotM, wants to be normal and fit in and seems to struggle more with her powers than the other two girls but in the end pulls through to save the day.

The Summoning is a quick easy YA read staring a group of three girls that learn they are descendants of ancient Egyptians. This book is from Sudi's point of view, a pretty normal teenage girl with two twin sisters and boy problems. The size of this book and the plot led me to believe that this would be a younger teen book, but the talk of sex brings it up a notch. I don't have a problem with that, but I felt that the character maturity level didn't fit the very simplistic writing style. Everything is just barely brushed upon, and each event only lasts a few pages. The Summoning is certainly a fun read, but it's short and simplistic. It may have been better without the boyfriend drama, the angst, and the shallow characters. I really wanted to like it because of the Egyptian theme. Unfortunately, it was just ok to me, and I won't be continuing the series.

Great story! But uhh...
...
WHY ARE YOUNG GIRLS IN THIS BOOK SO OBSESSED WITH WANTING TO HAVE SEX AND LOSING THEIR VIRGINITY??? Why... the majority of the characters are only around fifteen... It's bad enough having adults being all sex crazed like wild monkeys, don't have them young people be like that too! :P *Heart weeps for the next generation if work of fiction reflects today's reality*

ANYWAAAAAY, I really liked this story. I laughed SO HARD when the mummy fell in love with Sudi and how she and her friends had to hide him away before anyone saw. There's many humorous scenes like that, but that moment there was my favorite. I also liked how straight to the point this story was. It paced quickly but not to the point of rushing, making it a fun page turner.~ I'll def read the second book and see what'll happen next.

This is hip teen fantasy. Meri, Sudi, & Dalila are 15 year old teens living in and near Washington, DC. All three girls are descendants of Egyptian pharaohs. Egyptian mythology plays a central role in this novel. In addition to them all being of royal lineage, they have each been endowed with magical powers of spell casting and transformation. With guidance from characters of Egyptian folklore the 3 girls learn about their gifts and how to use them to fight the evil forces of Chaos. These teens of the 20th century have a challenging time coming to terms with each other and the task that awaits them. How they deal with these developments makes up the first book in Ewing’s Daughters of Isis series.

I really enjoyed this one. I love the Egyptian myth and culture paired with the Washington DC backdrop. Sudi is a great character, being torn between being a normal teenage girl worried about boys, and accepting her destiny as a Sister of Isis - a descendent of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. This book is a definate read for anyone who is into Ancient Egypt or anyone who loves DC, or both (it's like this book was written just for me because I love both!) I look forward to reading the next one in the series! It's also a rather fast read, so pick it up over a weekend when you have nothing else to do.
